good morning guess who found a new beauty standard to talk about! skin tone has always been a big topic of discussion in every culture. social media, TikTok, and seeing pictures of beautiful celebrities online every day have really warped society's expectations of how people should look. If you live in Asia, having a pale, clear, and bright complexion is what people aim for, while western beauty is obsessed with having a glowing tan all year round. today we'll talk about tanning, and how your skin can affect the quality of your life - might as well throw in a tv show I recently watched. The Dark Side of Tanning People Switching Races #edvasian

As an Indian , I just want to share that tanning is like the biggest crime here... Dark skinned people are always treated differently... Even in the lyrics of the songs , Girls with White skin are shown superior... I have a wheatish skin , Not so white .... But My parents still point out that I'm getting darker everyday... But you know what? Neither your appearance,Nor you colour makes you superior... It's your soul , Not your body which has to be beautiful...

Yup, tanning through staying under the sun is natural and is not problematic at all. Tanning beds and spray tans are fucking weird tho. Edit: Seems like some people don't get my "tanning under the sun is natural". I mean all the people working under the sun in my country (aka farmers, construction workers) or even just playing outside etc. Guess what if you live near the equator, you don't get a choice if you tan or not, that's my point. Western people wanting to tan as a beauty standard has nothing to do with naturally being more pale or stuff like that. The beauty standard used to be pale for the same reason as in Asia. Rich people could stay inside, peasants had to work outside. The only reason it changed is Coco Chanel accidentally getting a tan on a cruise, making the tan associated with being able to travel to far away sunny destinations. And this was somewhere in the mid 1920s so it's not even that long ago that it changed 🙃.

I think tan skin became favorable bc it’s a sign of a social and healthy lifestyle (exercise/going to beach/hiking/etc) and pale skin is sick/shut in/etc. It was more severe in 2010~2020 but I think people chilled out and prefer maybe a little sun kissed glow
@cambionn1777
@cambionn1777 Жыл бұрын
@@beth-bi9yv yeah but there's a big difference between a healthy pale skin and a skin pale from illness. No one wants a sick pale skin, no matter where in the world you are and in what time period... The whole pale equalling sick came only after the tan was popularised as the norm which came after Coco Chanel's tan return from the cruise, so in the end that's still the reason that caused it all.

I found tanning such a weird thing to do because it damages your skin and the consequences aren't worthy. I live in the Caribbean, I have dark skin but I was taught since I was young to stay out of the harsh sun, use an umbrella to protect from the when I'm outside, and wear sunscreen because it'll help prevent skin disease, breakouts, wrinkles, and I will look better when I'm past my 50's because I took care of it since I was young. But this people willingly go into tanning chambers to cook themselves and/ or sit in the harsh sun (with coconut oil???) To fry. If you spend xxx amount of time somewhere with a sun stronger than the one you're used to and get a bit darker, it's a natural process. It happens even to me when I go to the beach or hiking. But to purposely go to a place and pay money to get darker and darker and damaged skin? Weird af

Different things signal wealth in different areas. In areas without much sunlight and with greater industrialization, having a tan while still being identifiable as white signals wealth. As another example, having a clean car usually indicates that you are rich, but in some US cities having a car covered in dirt indicates that you have leisure time or own a $2 million house. In many ways, it's like the sneeches from Dr. Seuss.

As soon as they’re treated like the average POC who experiences shit on a daily basis, suddenly the exoticism wears off REAL quick. But unlike POCs, they can stop tanning while POCs wear their ethnicity every damn day. At the end of the day, they go to bed with white privileged and wake up with white privilege.

As a dark skin (in Asian standard, I have the tan white people try to get or maybe a bit darker) south Asian I always hated the idea of tanning. How are you trying to get the skin tone I'm ridiculed for? You can't say "I tan in the sun" when the tan is multiple shades darker than you. I've just always found it uncomfortable. Some of the comments I get are "your skin is such a yummy caramel", "I want your skin", "your skin is so exotic, like you just came from holiday " etc. No man, I'm Asian... A white person with my skin is seen as beautiful but me, with my ethnic features, am seen as less attractive for having my skin. Moral of the story: don't fetishize people's skin tone and try to wear it. Edit: so many brained replies from colourist/racist people who prove point. Also before you leave a reply looking like a dumb ass think about how different society treats darker skinned people and look up the affects of colourism. Some of you are really exposing you poor comprehension skills as well as your blatant ignorance and hate.before you even hit that reply button. Look up how colourism works and the effect it has. It's not people thinking I'm rich because I'm brown. Some of you need to check your privilege and not exclusively see things from a light skin/white (or whitewashed) perspective.

And I hate the fact that white people can tan like dark as Black people and get called pretty and stuff for it and “it’s just a tan”. But me born with that skin color I get oppression because of it and get treated differently in the world because of my skin tone. like I can’t take my black skin off and put it back on when I feel like it like it’s a costume.

I used to get quite tan because I did sports as a kid and my friends would always complain how they’re paler than me. This was in an Australian 99.9% white school. Everyone was always jealous of whoever was the most tanned, and people were envious of the few people of different ethnicities that had naturally tan skin. It’s simply a difference from where you come from. After school I became more shut in and was influenced a lot by Asian media so I never wanted to go in the sun so I could stay pale. Now whenever I get the slightest tan my brain says I look gross because it doesn’t line up with pasty idol images that are put out. Everyone has troubles with skin colour. It’s more a problem with peoples perception of wealth because that is ultimately what drives these prejudices. Aussies want to be tan because they look rich. Asians want to pale so they look rich. It’s sad.

Specifically, the feeling of basking in the sun. I’d prefer to enjoy these small joys, especially as you say, it wouldn’t be surprising if a diagnosis came up soon anyway. ASK YOURSELF why would England have a black queen? and she Charlotte is born into a GERMAN royal family of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. (spoiler alert) parents black too. This is why the House of Habsburg is one of the longest reigned houses From 1438 to 1806. it was the beginning of white rule in Europe. They inbred to keep it white. The Romans and the Moors into europe was to gate-keep - the original order and power of the natives. and to HOLDBACK whites from mass immigrating into Europe. read your history. I did not invent white-washed. you should it up . they painted over all the painting lighter to indicated royal was white. Swarthy Europeans and Native American and Native Australian = same faith. and the land looks like the look now ; for that same reason. DNA is a funny thing: maybe those people missed being themselves. so its not a tanning culture its a 'return to self' you give that right to gay people of being TRUE to who they are. extended to those who tan. afterall its their BIRTH RIGHT. BLACK IRISH means exactly what it means: there descendants have pale skin now; or you can explain away all that kinky 4C redhair in Ireland... exactly!! DNA

Dude idk, I'm from Europe and people with dark tan that definitely was not accidental, and who are obviously not POC are kinda seen as tacky and cheap. It was more of a status symbol maybe 10 years ago. Now it's just seen as unresponsible, if a person's skin color is basically fake it never looks good. Brown and black complexions are fucking gorgeous but on people who are born with it, if you're a blonde slav like me you just look like a peasant from the 1800s after 3 mins in a tanning bed

Tanning was more popular in like the 90s (or 80s) which was 30 years ago. In the 90s I had one 50 year old teacher (Swedish) who had so dark skin it looked like brown leather including dry leather texture and it just was so confusing to see because it really didn't look like natural healthy darker colored skin (she wasn't trying to look like of a different race, she just wanted the ultra-tanned "healthy" look) and I couldn't see her without worrying about her catching skin cancer because she was an awesome, good, and kind teacher. She just had a weird tanning addiction.

Never seen anyone using fake tan, and on the beach people are applying sunscreen far more often than when I was younger. I think people are more health conscious, and overly tanning is associate with higher risks health wise.

I love that you covered this topic. I guess its not as simple as Black and White (ba-dum-psh!). It's true, we also assimilate to the environment we're in so if we perceive a certain trait as being beautiful, we would attempt whatever means to obtain that beauty. It's just that sometimes individuals go too far and alter their image to appear like an alien rather than a human being. It's kind of sad because most people are already very naturally pretty prior to botching their face, skin, or body. Learn to love the skin and body you're in, right?

The thing for me with the second lady is that she says she wants to be black and that she is black. (I'm not saying that is at all possible cause it's not) but she's literally dressed as a stereotypical African American woman. With the flashy necklace and the exaggerated big boobs, big lips and big butt. I'm not saying that there isn't a black person alive with these physical traits but she's just a living caricature of what a black woman is which is false. I'm black (not American) and contrary to popular belief not all of us are big booty baddies. She's just stealing the physical traits of a stereotypical black woman instead of the everyday black woman. If that makes sense at all, like even from her pics alone shows her style changed dramatically to fit that stereotype. It's deeply disturbing tbh. That's just what I think btw🤷🏿‍♀️

Older people associate it with being copped up inside and not getting enough sunlight. Most people here actually wear sunscreen everyday to go out and we cringe when we see tourists walking around with super burnt skin. It's a mostly sunny country so even with sunscreen, it's impossible to skip the tan (unless your body is not the type to get one), so we make the most of it taking care to protect as much as we can.

You don't like the sun?". A friend compared me and another girl of the same age that gets a lot of compliments for her tan but she doesn't use SPF, stays under the sun rays at midday for hours, and the result is that she is already covered in fine lines and spots at 30 while I don't have any yet. I just hope she doesn't have problems in 10 years or so because of possible melanoma. Please use SPF!

On the one hand, I understand the temptation because I'm as pale as a human can possibly be. They don't even have makeup shades for my skin tone (not that it's any easier for darker sinned people) And pale skin can be kind of ugly because if you have ANY flaws (pimples, veins, redness, large pores) it's extremely obvious and a tan will help disguise that. Plus melanated skin is just PRETTY. But it's super weird to take it this far and appropriate POC. Even if you don't understand why it hurts other people, it's not that big of a sacrifice to just put the melanotan down and care about people's feelings.

It just makes me mad that they can get praised for altering their body to look like mine, but since I’m born with it I get hate. They can take it off whenever they want. They don’t have to suffer like we do. They get to pursue this look without any fear of going through long term discrimination or hate, but me? Followed in stores, treated with distain, picked on for the same skin that they’re trying to achieve. Hair too. Our cultural styles are worn by white people for mo other reason than “I can do it too! You can’t keep me from doing what you do!” How much more must be taken? How much more do others need to have? Just how much “understanding” must we have? Why can’t people see how privileged they are to snap their fingers and be back in the world’s good graces? I don’t find their imitation flattering. It doesn’t make me like my skin more. It just makes me sad. The little girl in me who cried day in and day out for being born dark skinned, with black eyes, and 4c hair writhes in pain because people treat how she looks like a trend. I don’t know. Like I get the whole beauty standards differ everywhere thing, but what this world has in common nearly everywhere is- a hate for dark skinned people. Surely these people know how people born with the looks they are trying to get are treated. Yet, they still find it okay to put the costume on. Doesn’t sit right with me. Feels like a slap in the face. Especially because it’s for something as shallow as aesthetics. Makes me sick.

I have some East Asian friends who can tan well during the summer and have porcelain skin if they stay out of the sun. They avoid the sun like crazy due to Asian beauty standards. I like that they are able to have tan and pale skin and not stuck with one skin tone like me. I hope Asians can be happy with their tan and pale skin like you.

As a white passing person of color, (my father is white and my mother is black/indigenous) I've often been rudely told by mainly white and some POC that I change my race all the time. If you're someone who does this to people's faces or behind their backs, please stop. Genetics is a crazy thing, and while I may not have inherited all of my mother's melanin, I do get very dark in the sun. No matter how much sunscreen I put on, I'm still going to tan many shades darker. You don't know everyone's story so don't assume. Also, I find that this goes hand in hand with other POC and white people telling multiracial people that they are not their heritage because they look a certain way. It's so annoying and literally not helping anyone.

Here in Mexico we have the white-xicans and the rest of darker skinned mexican people, I've experienced/observed a preference for lighter skin complexions in both. Even among the dark skinned mexicans they feel superior to someone who is one shade darker than them. I was bullied for being dark- skinned all throught childhood only to find out I'm light skinned with a tan from vacationing on the coast (I tan super fast n easy), as the tan faded I was treated better which sucks. Moving out to a different part of the country made me realize that that mindset is found more in places where the white-xicans and darker skinned mexicans live more separately (there's a whole socio-economic aspect to this white/darker skinned mexicans thing). And don't even get me started on how the "indígenas" are treated...

This is honestly so crazy to me because, even though they claim to do it as a way to show appreciation for darker toned people, it just comes off as them trying to mock us. It like modern day blackface, but instead of just the face they added in the body too😭😭 As a dark skin/ brown skin black girl, it hurts to see the first girl feel actually put her privilege aside for tan skin. Like, miss girl what?? I had to deal with colorism within my own family and that transitioned to me having internalized colorism, so much to the point where I said things like “I don’t want to get any darker”. I’m ashamed to say that I used to say that, but I was just a naïve kid that was regurgitating what my family said to me. The colorism thing then transitioned into texturism, because I used to truly believe that biracial girls with loose curl patterns were always seen as more attractive than dark skin girls with coils like myself. Several years later, I’ve grown and learned to love my skin, my hair, and everything that makes me beautiful. I love being black and although it’s a struggle, I wouldn’t change it for the world. It took a lot of relearning to do within myself, but I eventually got there all by myself and I’m proud of that!! Also, when I was younger, I didn’t like my hair because I was always told that it was “nappy”, “hard to manage”, “ghetto”, etc. My mother, older sister, and paternal grandmother were the only women that I had known that had perms, which my mother and father NEVER let me get, and I’m glad😭😭

Everything on American TV told me I needed to darken my skin. I eventually caved and darkened my skin. I couldn't handle the pressure, the constant taunts. Then, I grew up and stopped making myself darker. Now, I work as a model and my fair skin is my niche. It makes me special, because among "white" girls almost none of them are actually white! They've made themselves look orange or brown. So, to all my young fair-skinned white girls, don't let other people (usually white people) make you feel bad about yourself. Phew, the last lady had some of the audience looking utterly dismayed. On the fun side, the insert of the sunscreen use in the The Untamed - never fails to be hilarious.

I wanted to tan myself when I was younger but a close family member got skin cancer. He would always go to tanning salons which induced his cancer. I never really liked tanning that much in general.

i'm swiss and for context, the colors on the flag are red and white. And I always say I am a true swiss person because my skin is either white or red. I never get a tan no matter how long I am on vacation.

This is very weird! I feel like South African white people are comfortable in they're pale skin! They rarely tan in most cases. They're simple people they wear shorts; flip flops in mall or walk bare foot! As a black South African when i was younger i foumd it weird. Looking back now they're really not influenced by beauty standards.. The tanning business is making a fortune on people's insecurities. As a black girl i wouldn't even tan to look darker we all know we're seen as racially ugly!

This is disgusting. All my life I've been made to feel ashamed because of my skin tone and now we've got people doing it for clout.

I understand appreciating different skin tones , I myself make game characters with darker skin tones . As long as they don't claim to be a different ethnic group because that takes it to far , ethnic groups face huge amount of struggles and these people just want the look and don't care about the heritage, culture , tradition and struggles that the ethnic groups have .

I was rewatching zombies 2 for zombies 3 today and the movie made me relate to society. In zombies 2 Zedd is running for president in order to allow zombies to go to the prom with humans. In his campaign pictures he is looking human instead of himself so everyone doesn’t seem him as a monster or different. He doesn’t wanna act like himself because people stereotype him as a monster. His gf she’s with humans side and the other main character who wants to be werewolf because she doesn’t know her true identity. This reminds me how some people in black community have to bleach their skin or straighten their hair or to look a certain way to be accepted it not only happens in the black community but with other poc as well. I seen or experienced white people ( in my collage classes ) who wants to change their race to black, Asian or even hispanic. They are so lost of who they are, like they want to leave their identity to be someone else that they are not.
