This is probably the best swing lesson I have received in over 50 years of playing the game. As I got older, now 73, my distance continues to decrease. The catapult technique has me back getting the distance close to where I was ten years ago. I have been able to go back to the regular tees after the last few years at the seniors. Golf has become enjoyable again. Thank you very much Sir.

Danny, this video is the final coffin for my nasty driver slice. I have watched several of your videos about how to set up the driver How to do an inside swing How to properly turn Did watch and followed all of these and the nasty slice was still standing strong, then i finally found this video of yours. "LET GO" "HEAR THAT SOUND?" It was so hard for me to let go because i wanted control, but when i did, it was so effortless. Easy 200+ yards down the range. Motion so fluid. It just felt good. I felt "FREE". FREEDOM from my tense swing and slice. From the bottom of my heart, thank you ❤

I found this tip just before a boy's golfing trip to Spain in early November and it worked wonders for me, adding a good 30 yards to my average drive and I managed to hit my first ever drive in excess of 300 yards, albeit the hole was very slightly downhill and I had a helping tailwind. Listen to the man, he knows what he's talking about.

I used this method on my round on Saturday morning and it made a huge difference with respect to the accuracy and distance of my drive. I did initially feel like I was giving up a bit of control but the release of the tension in my grip naturally released the club head. Thanks Danny for this video you have helped me. Can you address how/if this concept can be applied to the iron play.

I discovered this method for swinging the golf club a couple years ago. I completely agree with the methodology you use and the idea behind it. Its more of a trebuchet turned upside down but your subscribers get the idea. The most important thing for anyone reading this is to understand that you are releasing tension in the arms on the take away. Love your explanation and presentation, Great video!

I stumbled across this same technique by trial and error a few years ago. I had started swinging again after a few teenage attempts with little success 50 years ago. I'm 65 now. I hit a thousand balls at a free driving range before I finally started what I called "throwing the club" at the ball to generate more power...because I had none. It totally changed my swing for the better. I also was watching the Olympics and noticing how effortless the women's swings were. So now I swing as smoothly as possible with the idea of speed on the downswing and throwing the club, or catapulting it, and have very consistent and semi-long drives. Certainly much better than anything I had before. So, it's super cool to see this video and to have "my" technique validated.

This video has changed my driving game for life. Thank you! It really opened my eyes, and one of the key things for me was allowing myself to feel out of control (at least it does at first) and allowing myself to screw up as many shots as it took (at the range) in order to get the feeling down. I hate messing up so badly that I stuck with what I knew, which felt "safe" and just made excuses for it. The next was moving my axis of rotation to the center my body and not around my lead shoulder which allows the catapult to happen. I always pulled my driver through from the butt, so I could never REALLY square up the face to path. As an added benefit to straight and reliable drives that I can now choose a line for, I'm swinging easier and my body is feeling MUCH less abused. Hope this comment summarizes a few things and helps whoever is reading it! Bombs away!

Years ago, an instructor told me about Gary Player recommending "releasing at the top." I didn't really understand it at the time, but when I watched this video and applied what you talked about today, I totally get it now, or at least I think I do in that you have to absolutely release the tension in your wrists, especially at the top of your swing; otherwise, you won't create lag. And you were right... It felt incredibly "wristy" to me at first, but once I got the timing down (and slowed my motion to allow the club to come around), wow! What a difference! Thanks so much!

Having virtually given the game away for a few years when on a handicap of 7 and @ 63 years of age having resumed playing again early this year, it has been a frustrating time to get my game near my old handicap. I always did have a fairly relaxed swing and mostly hit driver mostly straight with a little draw but could not find it again no matter how hard I tried. Earlier this week after a nice holiday and in a relaxed frame of mind I shot 8 over with 2 x 3 putts thrown in, so absolutely agree with you that an almost carefree approach works. A relaxed mind and body is a good start to better golf. I am delighted by the content and timing of your video which gives encouragement to work further on my irons and putting game. Cheers from OD

Great lesson! I just recently picked up on this from a Mark Crossfield video where he talks about feeling like you throw away the wrist angles early. As you do, he says it’s a feeling, not what really happens. I’m 76 and this really works. For me, I have to focus on holding the club mostly in the fingers with soft wrists. Doing this has added 20 yards to my drives but it also helps the club square up and take extreme curves out of the shot. Still working on iron play. Thanks for the lesson.

Hi Danny with the new reverse engineer method you helped me develop for my self; the catapulting of my club and the feeling I am releasing my club early with my trail hand come easier for me then ever before. And yes, you and John Henby of Australia who also advocates for the feeling of early releasing of the club has catapulted my game to a new height. Since golf was invented in the Middle Ages when Leonardo DaVinci was born I would imagine he may have been among the first people on earth to try a game of golf. After all he was an inventor of machinery and one of the first to study the body as well. People should understand that you are not teaching as other PGA instructors might teach; but, as far as I am concern you are one of the best. Thanks.

I work hard on my swing, see a pro, watched 100s of videos and still shoot my driver 190 yards on a good day, average around 180. Then, after watching several versions of your "catapult" video, tonight I went out to my backyard hitting net with my trusty SC300 - and boom, I shot about 10 drives in a row over 200 yards (max 235)! That in combination with how easy it felt just renewed my addiction to golf. Great advice. I had a teaching pro tell me basically the same thing back in the 1980’s and it made a huge difference in my drives. I was hitting line drives with a 10 degree loft Taylor Made driver about 250 yards. Doing what you say added 25 to 30 yards and I was hitting the drives about as high as a full swing with a 9 iron. Breaking the wrists early also made me a lot more accurate with the shorter irons and got my pitching wedge up to about 140 yards at a full swing. Love the channel and the advice.

Had to come back and leave a comment here. I watched this video earlier at work, and all I could think about was trying the method from this video. I just hit the range, and I have never had such consistant ball striking. Just relaxing, letting the weight of the club do the work, barely gripping it. I tend to grip tight and tense all my muscles and force the swing to gain distance, this video has proved that the exact opposite is true. Danny I love what you say, how you say it and how you explain it. It all makes sense and is relevant. I have been working on just this catapulting for a few months. I think we all have a natural baseball swing when swinging horizontally, it just seems a bit more difficult swinging on a more vertical golf plane. I have found a slightly stronger grip with the glove hand makes it easier to release, or catapult, but of course you have to allow for the inevitable draw. But another great video. You always seem to be able to focus on the things that I am needing to tweak. Thanks.

Is this technique the same for iron shots, as in one of your previous videos on how to strike your irons, I am sure that the instruction involved getting the upper body more forward and ahead of the ball.
@DanielMaude6 жыл бұрын
Keith Turton when you hit your irons the ball is further back in your stance so you catch the ball earlier with your body much more over the golf ball. Hope this clears things up a little. Also, the intention with a driver is to launch into the sky off a tee slightly different to an irons where the intention is to compress it into the turf.

This is a lot like what I learned to do naturally on my own over the years. Much more control, speed and power than trying to accelerate the club by pushing it. It's all about that final snap in the last 90 degrees just like you showed on the downswing and yes - being able to let go and have a some give in your wrists. It's all physics.. I have hit the ball consistently 300+ yards off the tee when I mastered this technique. Excellent demonstration of how it's done!

This lesson is a 10 on a 10 scale. Many will not appreciate how important-and right-he is. The hard part is trying to get what is essentially an early release-YES-casting the club. It’s not a cast if you’re turning properly. I found a way to do this that may work for you: Imagine a golf ball about 12 inches back along your club path from the real ball. Because your club is several inches off the ground that that point in your swing, imagine that ball is on a taller tee. This is the ball your club would hit on the way to hitting the real ball, okay? Now, on your swing, both backswing and downswing, focus on that imaginary ball. Hit it hard on your downswing, and try to flush it, not a glancing blow. That is going to force you to release early. It will also keep you behind the real ball, which is what you want. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT HITTING THE REAL BALL, TRUST THAT THE CLUB WILL GET TO IT AND IT WILL. YOU WILL FEEL, MAYBE FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT IT’S LIKE WHEN THE CLUB HAS REAL ANGULAR MOMENTUM AND WHOOSHES BY YOU. It does feel effortless. Remember, keep your focus on the imaginary ball and smash it on the downswing. Good luck.

Danny, I think instructors like you need to call out all the damage that has been done by instructors who speak of “delayed hit” and “holding the lag angle” and stuff like that: regardless of their good intentions, these teachers have created millions of “handle-pullers” who can only get to the ball by standing up and flipping their hands at the bottom. Ben Hogan had a thought about initiating his downswing that got the club catapulting early: “I feel like I’m taking an arrow out of a quiver.” Put a quiver of arrows across your back and reach up with your right hand to take one out. Pulling straight down (like a handle-pulling high handicapper) won’t get the arrow out; it will get hung up. To take the arrow out, your hand must move away from your shoulder, up and backward along the target line. When your hands move that way holding the club, even just a little bit, the club starts to catapult and build angular momentum and speed right from the top. Try it. If you agree, maybe you should do a video with a quiver of arrows across your back, showing the movement and perhaps giving your students a way to get the feel.

Love this video--My favorite if my game starts to wander and I need to get my swing back in synch. Like many of you I have tried many different swings in my golf life and I am convinced this is the best. Mike Malaska agrees when he discusses "The Four Ways to Swing" and concludes that this "Directing Momentum" swing is his favorite of the four different swing types. If I'm not mistaken this swing can also be described as the "L to L Swing" a la Jim Flick and David Ledbetter, "the vertical swing" as taught by Don Trahan, the "Slingshot swing", the "Pivot Centered Swing" and "Throwing the Golf Club" technique from Shawn Clements. The essence of the strategy is a vertical, steep, non rotary swing that utilizes both arm and hands for leverage (the catapult as Danny Maude describes it) and the body to give you the most effortless power, club head speed, accuracy and body friendly swing.
