To anyone getting 'tone suck' from this mod, I hate to say it, but it's nothing to do with the switch. By definition, the switch is a gate for opening and closing the effect of the unit. That being said, the FREEZE does have an always active BUFFER, which of course will suck your tone but, again, the switch wouldn't have anything to do with this. Also, people claiming the spring on the original switch mount is a ground are completely wrong. The switch is already touching the metal enclosure when it's screwed in, therefore creating a ground. I think the spring is there simply for 'extra ground', just incase, but really there's no need for it whatsoever as a ground needs to have a solid connection, and that's exactly what the switch touching the enclosure when it's screwed in provides! Anyway, great video! Thanks so much, the switch on my Freeze finally crapped out after months of playing up, and I'm biting the bullet and doing it myself.

You'd be right if the ground was soldered to the button housing, but it's not.

Two dollars, 5 minutes, done. PERFECT. Thank you. This is much better-the damn thing is an ambient effect that gets killed by a click. Thanks bro!

Just what I needed to know. I can't believe the crap switches EHX uses on their pedals. Do they not get it??? I was wondering what to do about the loud pop on my Synth9, this gives me the confidence to open the pedal and fix it myself. Thanks so much.

I don't think this was a good idea. I did this a couple weeks ago, and it's been sucking the tone straight out of my signal. I suspect that the spring-thing on the original switch kept it grounded or something. Anyway, I'm going back to the old switch I think.
@TheSunshineGroup7 жыл бұрын
oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. My pedal has been working for years since I made the mod, I'm sorry the same didn't work for you :( I hope your freeze is ok and I apologize for any damage I may have influenced.
@MostlyTorso7 жыл бұрын
No, you're good man. I got the idea from another video. But seriously, I just removed this pedal from my board (with 11 OTHER pedals) tonight, and my signal was drastically improved. With this pedal in my chain it made my tone muddy and mushy. It's not an obvious change--kinda subtle--but it's there. I'm going to put the old switch back in the pedal tonight, test it tomorrow (or soon, anyway) and I'll get back to you. I mean, why else would they have put that spring there that goes up against the inside wall of the pedal? It's gotta be for something!
@TheSunshineGroup7 жыл бұрын
MostlyTorso damn, that's a really good point you've made. I typically don't care about tone sucking because I have too many shitty pedals on my board and I like that janky sound, but what you say about the spring makes a lot of sense. Let me know how the change goes! Maybe we need to find a way to ground the silent switch...EHX stock switches are far too loud (especially when I'm making ambient music in small venues, it kills the vibe when I want to make a drone!)
@MostlyTorso7 жыл бұрын
Here's my new plan: Replace with stock loud-click switch, and from here-on-out only play stadiums and keep the massive crowds back from the stage. Boom. Problem solved. Ha!

@llamalounge13526 жыл бұрын
this is not a good instructional video for learning to solder, those wires will come loose very easily considering how they were soldered. wires through the hole - then solder. the holes are there for a reason, you don't apply the solder to the joints separately to the wires, you do one lot of solder for the wire and the hole. and you need to strip insulation first because you'll get nasty plastic fumes and plastic in your solder joints which will weaken the connection.
@TheSunshineGroup6 жыл бұрын
Bro, I did put the wires through the holes! I even had the holes soldered to help more. Why is it wrong to do this? But you're right, this isn't a video for soldering skills and wasn't meant as such. I just wanted to show people that this mod was possible and how to go about doing it. Thanks for the input
