Watching this when it came out in May 1983 I was absolutely on the edge of my seat horrified at Luke being slowly killed by the force lightning from the Emperor. People were gasping and yelling in despair and the moment Vader grabbed the Emperor and threw him into the core shaft man oh man it was as if the roof came off the theater, people were clapping and crying and shouting with absolute relief and joy. When a movie draws a reaction from the crowd like this scene did that memorable opening day in May 1983 you know it never ever get old!!👍

We were all caught up and so emotionally invested in the events, and this climactic scene caused many loud groans and cries of "no!" when Luke was being attacked by Palpatine. Everyone thought he might be killed and then deafening cheers rang out when Vader grabbed the Emperor and hurled him into the shaft down to his death. Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Sidious? I thought not. It’s a story the Jedi would not tell you. It’s Sith and meme legend. Darth Sidious was a dark lord of the Sith. So powerful and so wise. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, the only thing he was afraid of was getting thrown down a 65 story reactor shaft, which of course, eventually he did. He taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him. Ironic. He survived an attack from his lightning blast, but not a fall from a great height.

If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps she will." It's interesting to think about what Obi Wan said about only Sith dealing in absolutes, because as Luke says "Never!" and attacks, he's dealing in an absolute and tapping into anger and aggression. Which is almost guaranteed what the Emperor and Darth Vader were trying to accomplish, bait Luke into acting from there. Thankfully, Luke realized what was going on and stopped when he saw what was going on.

@stormthrush37
@stormthrush37 7 ай бұрын
@@tooru-kun4178 Agreed 100%. Either way though there were little things intentionally done in the prequels that tie into the originals and this may be one of them. Personally I took Obi Wan's prequel absolutes line slightly differently, very similar but slightly different - that the Jedi were operating from more of a dark sided place than they realized, that they had been corrupted by it themselves and didn't really even see it, which I think kind of ties into the whole Mace/Yoda exchange about how their ability to use the force was diminished. There was at least some small awareness at the top something was wrong with the Jedi, even if they ultimately didn't do or say anything about it. Speaking of a Jedi doing something dark sided, how about the end of the Mustafar duel? Leaving a crippled and helpless man alone to burn in agony and likely die? Not light sided by any definition I can think of!! Pretty dark sided in fact!

Luke won by refusing to kill Vader, getting his anger back under control and not allowing Palpatine the satisfaction of corrupting him to the dark side and controlling him like his dad Anakin. That act of defiance from Luke, annoyed Palpatine because he failed to manipulate and corrupt a Jedi to the dark side for the first time ever, He then proceeded to kill Luke with his force, displaying that sadistic face, later turning to anger, rage and hatred. Palpatine thought he had broken Vader to the extent that he won't fight back, boy was he wrong Anakin had finally broken free from the dark side and Palpatine's control over him, picked him up and threw him down the reactor shaft to his death. He was not going to idly stand by and let Palpatine take away what he had left of Padme, his son Luke and kill him. Luke was right, Palpatine was cocky and it became his demise in the end.

One of the greatest lessons I learned in life was from this scene. A father is supposed to be there for his children, no matter what. Especially in times of trouble. My dad taught me this as I watched a conversation between my parents and my father explained to my mother why Darth Vader sacrificed himself to save his son. Later, when I became a dad myself, I was still there for my children (even now as young adults) as my dad was for my brothers and me so many years prior.

damn that made me almost cry vader realizing the torture of luke and how he is special to him, just like padme. He didn't want to make the same mistake losing his son. Sure, he was fighting Luke but he was ordered to by the emperor. Emperor caused so much hate to vader from being turned to the dark side, losing every single friend he possibly imagined, and his wife. Luke was the only person that Vader had so by not killing him, Vader would be free and not have chaos again. Killing the emperor made him free and prevent further mental damage. Sure, he died from killing him but it was a moment of relief and freedom.

To be honest, this fight doesn’t bring any emotion to me anymore. It’s gotten boring, and all I really care about is the music now. Mostly cause I never cared about the original trilogy in the first place, not being from that generation, but also because I rarely feel any emotion at all with these types of things so it’s kinda just “meh” at this point.

I’ll take it one step further - I think Vader’s “No!” was not only unnecessary in the 21st century version of ROTJ… it was very un-Vader like and almost made him cartoonish. Vader was at his best maintaining relatively monotone, emotionless vocalizations. The Vader “No!” - which didn’t exist in the original ROTJ version I saw in theaters in 1983 - just takes away from the Vader mystique IMHO.

I think Vader saying “No” takes away from the non verbal communication in this scene. Even though Vader’s mask has no way of expressing emotion, the way they capture Vader makes it seem like he is pondering. He doesn’t need to say No. we already can see what is going on in his head.

_I think Vader saying “No” takes away from the non verbal communication in this scene_ It sure does. _He doesn’t need to say No. we already can see what is going on in his head._ This alteration has nothing to do with making Vader's inner conflict more obvious. It's merely to mirror the scene in ROTS where Anakin watches as Palpatine tries to electrocute Mace Windu before begging for his life. Anakin screams "NOOOOOO!" as he ultimately decides to turn against Windu and save Palpatine instead. That's the moment when he ceases to be Anakin Skywalker and officially becomes Darth Vader. Now in ROTJ, we have Vader who screams "NoOoOooOo!!!" as he ultimately decides to turn against Palpatine and save his son instead. That's the moment when he ceases to be Darth Vader and becomes Anakin Skywalker once again. The change is purely symbolic. As Lucas explained, the 2 trilogies mirror each other, and just like poetry, they rhyme.

I don't know why people have a problem with the "no". For me it adds to the scene and it's believable that anyone in this situation carrying all the weight Anakin had by this time would likely say the same or at the very least not be silent once they commit to what they're going to do. I understand wanting the films left untampered (I'm looking at you Jabba's palace. God damn am I looking at you) but in this scene I think it elevates it if only a little but elevates nonetheless

Well, the emperor forgot the old saying 'blood is thicker than water'. You'd have to be some type of self absorbed narcissist with a massive sense of entitlement to think you could dispose of someone's son in such a way in front of their dad without any response from the dad, but I suppose that's what the emperor was.

Tyranny has no bonds. Ruling by fear, whether by a Sith Lord or real-world examples like politicians who destroy a democracy to gain power. Julius Caesar, Napolean, Hitler, Nixon or Palpatine, they all shared the same inspiration.

When the emperor was trying to kill Luke with his final discharge of lightning, I can imagine him thinking these thoughts and broadcasting them to Vader: "You fool! I should be the one dying, not him! You should have trained him and then he'd have become more powerful than both of us! He's going to get nothing because you neglected him!

I remember seeing this back in May of 1983 at the end of my 8th Grade year. Saw it with my friends and when this scene happened, my god, everyone including me and my friends were cheering so loud I thought the ceiling was going to fall! And after seeing the sequels and how much Annakin loved Padme...if I were him , right before tossing Palpatine into the core reactor of the Death Star I would have screamed out at him...This is for Padme, f*ck you and die! The best scene in all the movies IMO.

I can't overstate how much this trilogy - this scene - affects me now, knowing how much of a huge thing it was for me as a kid. And every year since. It's only with age that you realise the emotional connections that can be formed by a genius musical score such as this trilogy showed throughout - but nowhere more so than the scenes In the throne room here. That look that guy's like me get during those scenes... That's called ALL IN. Meaning I am fully invested. Everything that's going on, every underlying moral story, every life lesson, every father/son moment, every fucking bit of it... sign me up I'm ALL IN.

Both versions of this scene are great in my opinion. OG - The silence adds to Vader pondering whether he should save his son, who by all counts should despise him but sees good in him, and true to Luke's belief, Vader chooses good Edited - The one with the two "no's" adds a small but poignant addition, **the reawakening of Anakin Skywalker.** Luke went through what he did, but never turned to the dark... and right now he was going to lose Luke just like how he lost Padme, and he didn't want to fail Luke like he failed Padme
