Engineer Bill Stulla shares the behind the scenes story of how "Cartoon Express" was created for KHJ-TV Channel 9 in Los Angeles. Home of Gumby, Spunky & Tadpole, and many other cartoons, Bill Stulla won 2 Emmy's for excellence in children's programming, due - a great deal - to his successful "Red Light/Green Light" game. Engineer Bill was a nightly 'must see' for kids everywhere for over 12 years.

Engineer Bill family, For my 73 birthday someone sent me videos of you and also Sheriff John. It was my best gift! When I saw these I felt in my heart the times when I was a little girl. I loved you and John so much. You brought so many good times and feelings in my childhood. God bless!❤

If you were a pre-pre-school kid in LA you watched BILL STULLA's show. Had him for a patient at work and very nearly knocked people down to get out of his way, put him at the top of the list to be seen and told anyone treating him I'd have to be present to make sure it was done correctly. Then I lost it when he patted my arm and said, "Y'know Dan, it makes me feel good to see "my kids" as successful adults." OHGAWD! ENGINEER BILL CALLED ME ONE OF HIS KIDS!! 😱

I was on Engineer Bill in 59 the way you got on as a daily assistant...you would write in and if they picked your letter, you would request the model boxcar of your choice to build, and they would send it to you and you had to build it and bring it back on the day you were scheduled to be on the show...I asked for a caboose and my brother helped me build it cuz I didn't know a thing about building models! I got on the show, and got a lot of prizes, and my mom ended up closing the show doing the hula hoop!! she never forgot that!!! neither did I !!

Good for you, Christine! So many kids have fond memories of appearing on Bill's show. He was one of a kind; the type you no longer see on television.

What a great memory! I was pretty young at the time, but I remember this as one of my favorite shows.

I remember Engineer Bill. When I was home sick with a cold at age six, I looked forward to him running his "Little Moe" steam switcher engine on his layout. I sent Bill a HO scale drive-in restaurant I had made out of cardboard, and Bill showed it on TV. I was in heaven! Glad to see you're doing well, my friend!

I met Bill at a store in North Hollywood where he was set up to promote the store. He was entertaining the kids with a game where you pulled a lever and if it made the sound of a train whistle you won a prize. It was great and us kids loved it. God bless Engineer Bill.

As a child, I lived a few blocks from the family. I am glad to see this video. I always had believed that with his focus, he was the one who came up with the idea of Engineer Bill. I wish more people in the world were like him.

He was very important to me in my childhood! Met him in a parking lot appearance. Played the Big Whistle and lost but won once on the TV Show. Had 2 American Flyer Trains at home myself. Watched the Show religiously. Other than Captain Kangaroo he was the beautiful soul influencing me with trains and cartoons in my early life. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO!

Engineer Bill was a wonderful role model. Loved red light, green light, the get well bell, and Mighty Mo the bad habit buster, and of course the American Flyer trains and cartoons. I had the pleasure of talking to Engineer Bill Stulla on the phone and meeting him at a Toy Train Operating Society convention in Long Beach, CA. Also, I was able to attend his memorial service and meet his Daughter Kathy. Thank you for the memories and happy high balling till we meet again at the end of track.

My mother passed approximately a year ago and she hated red light green light because milk would get thrown all over the place in front of the TV. But she loved engineer bill because she knew that I wasn't out side doing something I shouldn't be doing. Red light green light brought back memories that just was a different time and place in the world.

Post script: I just read that Bill had recently passed away. I wish I could have gotten my earlier message to him in time for him to know how much I loved his show as a kid. RIP, Engineer Bill....

Wow! What a great video! Very interesting how the show came about. He still looked the same even after all those years. He got me started in model trains and now I have a riding scale backyard railroad. Thanks Engineer Bill!

Bill looks just like Mickey Rooney. Where's footage on KZbin of Bad Habit Buster, that train that Engineer Bill would push up the incline to push the bad habit into the trash can?
