This is my first ever stress free Christmas. Every year ( I'm 74 now) I would go above and beyond to give my family and loved ones a wonderful Christmas. Every year I would have to go to my room and cry. Even the slightest remark and I would crumble. I started having panic attacks just before Thanksgiving. This year I said "No!" to the baking, cooking, gift buying, decorating, etc. that made my holidays hell. This year I put up minimal decor, purchased gift cards and ordered catering. It was a great Christmas Eve. Today I'm sitting on my butt eating leftovers and visiting with my family that couldn't be here last night. I have never felt so peaceful holiday time. I plan on doing the same next Christmas.

I feel your pain. I used to spend a lot of thought, money, and time to make sure that everyone in my family and extended family (22 or more - adults and children) had exactly what they hoped for every Christmas, often multiple gifts for each one, including hosting and cooking for everyone. And most years I received absolutely nothing in return. Although they would give gifts to each other, just none to me. So I too can remember one year sneaking off to my bedroom to have a little cry and feeling very unloved and unimportant too. So I decided to just stop trying to make everyone’s Christmas special. Now I just give small gifts to the little kids and to my Mom. I do give money to the older children’s mothers and let them buy their gifts or give the cash to them. The adults (siblings, nieces, nephews etc. over 18 yo) no longer receive gifts from me. Nor do I host the big celebrations anymore. Simpler celebrations at someone else’s house, which is far less exhausting. I have finally learnt that if I don’t expect anything then my feelings don’t get hurt and it is a welcome surprise when I do receive a gift. 💝

My mom goes overboard with Christmas, I'm convinced gift giving is her love language, but I feel so bad too because money has been super super tight for my husband and me. So, she didn't get nearly what she deserves, she's helped us so much, and I feel like she doesn't get that appreciation around the holidays. I won a turkey breast one year for Thanksgiving. Was so grateful I planned a dinner to share with neighbors. Made stuffing, bacon smothered green beans and brownies to add to it. One of the neighbors I invited made the exact thing I had made and brought it too. Her stuffing only had salt for the seasoning and it was inedible. The green beans were canned and the bacon just boiled in the green bean water so it was soggy bacon in overcooked gray green beans. Nobody ate her stuffing because it was like eating spoonfuls of salt. Never understood why she had to make the exact thing I did. If she had chosen something different we could have had a diverse feast. If I win it again, I'll probably make another neighbor dinner but won't invite her.

My adult son is not now nor has he ever been what I would call "entitled", but this happened this year and made me literally LOL so I decided to share it. Back when he was still living in the house with me, I worked as an area manager for Payless Shoesource. I had always had a habit of when socks went on clearance that coincided with a BOGO sale, I would buy a bunch of them at incredibly cheap prices throughout the year. At the end of the year most people inevitably got a box full of various socks each year for Xmas among their other gifts. Nobody was ever mad about it, but I did get teased about it a few times, and the kids were never really that surprised or enthused to see them. Of course, things change. My son no longer lives with me, and Payless is no longer in business so I obviously don't still do this, and haven't in some time. So this year when I asked my son what he wanted he gave this reply LOL: "Believe it or not mom, I miss getting the box of socks every year. Maybe I was wrong to be so ungrateful to get them every year, but they just seemed so boring and easy to take for granted. Probably because I never had to buy them for myself. Now that I do, every time I have to pay the stupidly expensive prices for them, I always think 'Shame a box of them doesn't just magically appear every year anymore', so I promise if you were to send some now I'd never roll my eyes about them again" HAHA

He buys his own socks and gets rid of any older socks as soon as they are a little worn. He always has at least 20 pairs (the same for undershirts and boxers!). I think it harkens back to when they were little and they would get their yearly supply of socks and underwear every Christmas. The day after Christmas I would start yelling, "Bring out your dead" and that meant that all the old socks and underwear would be collected, sorted and, either donated or thrown out. (We are a household of Monte Python fans)

I don't live in the US - Just watched the news a few minutes ago, and the largest local food bank was saying that they were handing out food to 65,000 people in 2019. That number has grown to over 200,000 this year. We donate to the local food banks every month. It isn't much, but it helps.

@@lokicooper4690 strange though-most people who complain about what they get from a charity are the same who have the latest phone, trendiest clothing and three cars in the driveway. Some people truely don’t need a food bank, they need to learn how to budget and prioritize….

Amen! Our tiny pantry of only about twelve volunteers feeds up to 65 families every week, and the numbers are only growing. Honestly people who don't really need the food infuriate me because we have clients who come to the food bank who are desperate for food and will take anything. There's only a finite amount to go around so the higher the demand the less each family gets- including the ones who need it the most. Okay, I'm climbing off my soapbox now.

So one time, we changed the water filter and she came in time just after the filter’s changed. She ordered iced venti water(2X) and side cup of ice. Then she sipped, she turned around, smacking her tongue for taste, “Hey, your water taste funny.” I told her I’d love to change all of her waters instead she was like “I deserve a Coffee cake or something since I waited in line for well over 15 minutes.” I was like “Ma’am, You just got waters and plus, I thought u can’t do caffeine nor sugar?” She was so passed, she demanded to talk to my Manager , turned out it was me, THEE MANAGER. 😂😂😂😂

My family helped deliver Christmas hampers every year growing up. Overwhelming, people were so grateful especially the young families as the hampers included wrapped toys (off of lists provided by the families). But one family really soured things for us. The toys were in garbage bags to allow the parents to hide them to either give them from Santa or themselves. But the kids in this family opened them right away. We hadn’t even brought all the food in. One of the boys exclaimed “Not this again, I got this in the other delivery.” Turns out this was the third Christmas hamper program they signed up for. And the mom asked us if we could take the toy back and bring the child something different. Saddest part was there was a wait list for hampers, so while this family had three there were families that had none.

The same thing was happening in our area. So our church teamed up with the Salvation Army and I think so did many others. The families need to register in advance and then they get a full Christmas dinner plus toys for the kids. When all the groups giving hampers out group together more people are helped because it stops some families from double or triple dipping (aka playing the system).
@lokicooper4690 Жыл бұрын
Have a friend who does this for her church. I believe they get together with other churches and compare lists so people aren't getting from multiple sources. The families do have to register, so comparisons can be made. I remember reading something somewhere where one family registered every member as a "family" and all got in line at the hamper give out. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything that could be done. They got something like 11 baskets of food. For one family. I hope they put something in so that couldn't happen again. Or just plain banned the family from getting a basket.

Having been a young divorced mom and working two jobs to support my son during my early 20s, that girl's attitude totally stank (stink, stank, stunk!) Quite a number of fabulous meals could've been made with that food if she just closed her mouth and put her energy into doing something good for her child instead of complaining.

I feel like slapping that ungrateful person! My disabled son and I depend on the food bank, and I'm grateful for everything we get! We've never gotten a spread like that. We rarely get fresh food because our small food pantry can't store it. I live off-grid (100% solar/wind powered) on a mountain, down a rough dirt road that washes out in heavy rains. Once I was stuck here for 6 weeks when I couldn't get to town, didn't see another human the whole time. Having stores of canned goods, dried rice and beans, and bags of nuts and dried fruit meant we had all we needed. Last year, we got 9 pounds of delicious pistachios in December; that's about $90 worth of pistachios! I considered it our Xmas gift since we love them.

I've been on the receiving end of food banks. Most of the time, you WON"T get anything that needs to be in the fridge, because of spoilage. I always had butter and milk in the fridge, because I knew that would not be part of the meal. I was always grateful for whatever I got, even if there was something in the package that I didn't really care for. Someone in my house would want it, so it never went to waste.

I'm from Sarnia, my community works very hard to ensure every child gets a Christmas. I volunteer, typically any family that can't afford Christmas is "adopted" by a community member/local business. Also hundreds of shoe boxes are filled for the parents to receive as a gift. Beautiful Sherpa blankets were donated this year and attached to the shoe boxes. The families anonymously purchase $250 per child from their wish list. It's awful to see the Facebook marketplace the day of the gift pick ups. Parents are selling their items. Selling the expensive gifts their kids get. Honestly it's infuriating. I have seen the extent of what goes into this program. I know this community has more resources for people than many others do. I just needed to vent about this because the girls asking for the PS4 is the same kind of entitled

@@downhomesunset we have a very large homeless population. Rent for a bedroom is $1000 and for an actual one bedroom unit it's $1500. I'm a recovering addict (7years sober) many years I'd watch parents ask for the help and sell everything immediately. Which broke my heart because Christmas morning was no brighter for those kids despite the amazing community giving. It bothers me so much because it's often "repeat offenders" who abuse the program. I'm just so happy that the community continues to put their hearts into these donations. Some families break down in tears because they are so grateful. It's beautiful that the adopters continue to give each year despite the few who are greedy or trying to feed a habit

I have always been of the mindset that it doesn't hurt to ask. It doesn't make one entitled to ask for something (even a ps4)...entitlement comes with expectation and demands. But simply asking? If you don't ask, you never know how much people are actually willing to do/give. Ask. If you're told no, accept it. And here I am, watching and thinking about my own Christmas where I was so happy 'cause I got to go on a roadtrip with my family to visit relatives we hadn't seen in a long while and do some exploring. That was our Christmas gift to eachother and it was so nice I just wanna do it again

lol.. Kinda lost over the lady saying it was a slap in the face to get a Christmas ornament. Can you imagine being her kid, bringing home a sweet christmas drawing and shes like "it's not a nativity scene? this is a slap in the face."

I don’t have kids, for context. If a kid gives me something they made(it could literally be a single macaroni glued to a sticky note), I’m keeping it forever. Kids make me happy, and I treasure the gifts they give me.

@@gaxalee7392 A relative drew a picture of me and my cat when she was young. I asked why I was wearing a pink dress. She said, "Because you never wear pink." That young relative got married last year. I still have her picture of me up on my refrigerator.

First story reminds me of an ex coworker of mine. She went to a local foodbank to get a Thanksgiving basket and the next day she came in complaining about what was in it. This was coming from a girl whose husband spent his days smoking and playing video games, instead of getting a job, and she'd take the money the government gave her for her daughter and instead used it for computers and. . .the stuff her husband smoked every day. She was a real piece of worker.

6:23 *I love socks for Christmas!!!* 😁❤️ 5:37 for the 4th of July, people come for a _free_ firework show, and we spend over *$5000 on fireworks!!!* But, *every year,* people tell us to make it _bigger!_ *If you want it bigger, be nice and give us some money for them! Fireworks aren’t free!!!*

Always reminds me of my friends and family always exhorting me to get a "better phone" or "newer car" yet not a single one offers to help PAY for these things.

not sure if you are a business or private home but either way have a donation cup in your hand and ready to be stuck in their face with a hearty "thank you for your kind offer to pitch in for next years show" loud enough that others around you hear too. my teen(almost 20) was thrilled to get socks with stitch on them today...lol

Commenting on the last thing you said... You are so right!! Not Christmas but I used to be a staff member at Summer camps but I would always reserve a little of myself for me to show off... it wasn't bad but there was something missing. The last Summer camp I attended I gave 110% absolutely for the kids and it was the most joyous camp I attended. When I left it felt so much more rewarded then any time before. I was invited back but sadly life got in the way and I found new areas in which to work. Love your videos, Charlotte!

I opted out of our company Kris Kringle because someone announced that they didn't want anything from the dollar store. That wasn't my plan but what if that's all someone can afford?? Showed me exactly what this person values and reinforced why I don't celebrate this holiday anymore.

My husband & I made our own cards for birthdays & anniversaries cause we had no money. I few we only gave the children gifts, again low on cash. Our family time was more precious than presents! Merry Christmas to all! 🎄🎄❤️🇨🇦

Best Christmas gift I received this year was waking up to a clean kitchen. My son cleaned my kitchen. Best gift ever.
