She's remembered as the 4th discarded wife of Henry VIII, but there's more to Anne of Cleves than that. This episode looks at her life, the foreign policy decisions that led up to the marriage, and how she handled life after being divorced.

Don't know why she's so underrated. She was very smart and survived them all as a wealthy women. I was born in the same city (Düsseldorf) and I live near the castle she grew up (Solingen) but nothing reminds of her. Even in Germany she's only a footnote.

Yea. In an autocratic patriarchy. Anne outlasted the females who sought power. Henry probably saw that she wasn't a threat and kept her around. I found it interesting that he even loved her after the divorce as a sister. She's one of my favourite females in history.

That’s so sad, she really did shine against her contemporaries of her time in not just beauty but her love and kindness to her stepchildren and positive interactions with them even after the split. And she was a heck of a lot smarter than she was given credit to. Always my favorite amongst his circle.

Yeah! Ann of Cleves is my favorite of Henry’s wives. She was no fool and I am glad historians are reassessing her rile in the Tudor dynasty.

19:16 I didn’t realize King Henry VIII kept Holbein on after the “portrait “ fiasco. I always thought of Anne of Cleves the most beautiful of his wives and known mistresses, so always suspected it was more his injured pride and not her “disagreeable looks” that put him off. So this finally for me, makes sense. I also feel if she responded to his kiss and touches that fateful day, he could have used that against her in the long run when he got tired of her as was his history with his prior wives and perhaps seeking annulment or divorce in the future based on she wasn’t virtuous due to responding positively to a strange man’s caresses.

Anne of Cleves (German: Anna von Kleve; 22 September 1515 - 16 July 1557) was Queen of England from 6 January to 9 July 1540 as the fourth wife of King Henry VIII. The marriage was declared never consummated and, as a result, she was not crowned queen consort. Following the annulment, she was given a generous settlement by the King, and thereafter referred to as the King's Beloved Sister. She lived to see the coronation of Queen Mary I.

Wonderful! Couple of small things. Anne’s Mother was dead, she wouldn’t have been able to explain the birds and the bee’s. I’m Italian Canadian, 64 years old. My own grandparents were married by proxy, as arranged by their parents. The met for the first time at the church moments before their wedding. Fortunately it turned out a happy union. However my grandmother did admit to her own children she had no idea what to expect on her wedding night. My great grandmother was uncomfortable with that conversation. She wasn’t clear on sex, my grandfather had been with a woman prior to his marriage. He gently explained it to her. It’s very conceivable Anne had no idea!

The baby maker is my ancestor. Queen Anne was my aunt 13th removed. I find her to be such an inspiration. She laughed in the face of diversity and out lived the king that divorced her because he blamed her looks for his impotency. When in fact he was a fat ugly bald old guy that was impotent. She over came and got the best settlement of any queen divorced. She also got a palace and a second home.

Do you think its possible that she wasnt as sexually ignorant as some made out but that she was being sarcastic when saying "Is that not enough?" when referring to their lack of sex.

Well, personally I feel that Katherine of Aragon carried herself with even more dignity than Anne of Cleves and was treated far more poorly.Katherine stuck to her guns, knowing that she was in the right. As a devout Catholic, she knew that her immortal soul would be condemned had she lied about the validity of her marriage to Henry VIII,and that the fact that her marriage to Prince Arthur was never consummated.I'm not a Christian, but I am familiar with theology & believe absolutely in Katherine's testimony at her traumatic interrogations. At least Anne of Cleves showed kindness and respect to the Princess Mary, who had been denied any kind of contact with her beloved mother for years.Rot in hell Henry VIII. (Professor K Howard-Hastings,whose family has a more legitimate claim to the throne than these inbred, illegitimate Germans!!)

This still is not credible enough to me. So, if are you saying that he divorced her simply because she did immediately recognize him at their first meeting, that is not credible to me. Secondly, Cromwell died before Henry could kill him.

I tend to find modern female history bloggers and novelists only claim as hearsay that which contradicts THEIR storyline, while the other points equally based on hearsay at least, can be stated as fact if supports their feminist narrative. I have no problem believing Anne of Cleves was ugly and smelly and lacked personal culture. Why, other than the fact we have recorded from the time several who have said it? Because that's what many British Kings and Princes would be saying about their German wives for the rest of British history, and they WERE German, or at least partly.
