This is a supplemental episode that was a chat between James Boulton (Queens of England Podcast) and me, about Katherine of Aragon. The sound is subpar - it was a bad Skype day - but the content is great!

I absolutely LOVE Catherine of Aragon. She was a remarkable woman who was ahead of her time. I have great admiration for her and deep sympathies for how she was treated later on. She is so fascinating to learn about. ❤👑

Catherine of Aragón is my favorite, because she was a queen REGENT in England. She lead English armies to defend England against Scottish-French invasion by James IV of Scotland... Catherine of Aragón was daughter of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragón (Spain) - the kings who expelled Muslims from Western Europe when they reconquest the Granada Emirate. Isabella of Castile's mom was English (from Lancaster House); so Catherine of Aragón deserved to be queen of England more than Henry VIII.

Many people don’t know that her marriage to Arthur was designed to give their future children Legitimate Lancastrian blood (the Tudors had bastard Beaufort blood). Thereby uniting the Houses of York and Lancaster (continuing the Tudor myth) as well as allying England to the Might of Spain.

@@carinafourie9119 John of Gaunt married Kathryn Swineford, mother of his Beaufort children, and they were legitimized, but with the caveat that they would not be in the line of succession for the throne.

She was raised by two kings to be a queen. Queen Isabella had her own kingdom, she was called queen because she was female but she was really a king, her husband had his kingdom and she had hers. Her mother expected her to be a queen that's how she was raised. Queen Catherine was not going to accept anything less.

Amusingly enough, it would appear Henry had absolutely no idea whether or not a woman was virginal. He made no actual statement regarding Catherine, and there is little doubt that Katherine Howard definitely was not, due to her premarital partners, one of which had been executed with her. Of course, Henry might not have been capable of discovering Katherine's condition. He had not been capable with Anne of Cleves but had blamed his failure on her.

This comment is so long after it was first put out that I'm not sure that it's even relevant, but here I go. Rather than thinking how "stubborn" Catherine and Anne were, or how poor Henry was stuck between these unyielding women, there is another perspective. Catherine was considered Henry's legal wife, even by him, for decades, with births and deaths of their pregnancies and infants. It was his desire for a son that made his first marriage inconvenient. Marriage is supposed to be a sacred sacrament. During the Tudor age spirituality was of the highest importance. Their relationship with God was as real as breathing. Why is Catherine being viewed as obstinate for not wanting to break her sacred oath? Also, why is Anne being viewed as a scheming vixen for not wanting to commit adultry or committing the sin of fornication? Both of these women were being put in the position of having their immortal souls jeopardized by Henry! God, virginity and vows were binding by early modern standards. That seems to be forgotten when we discuss how Catherine and Anne went about dealing with Henry's desires.

@@carlosmarcial6201 For years, Anne was denying Henry what he wanted. Why do you think he was determined to marry her? It is quite likely Catherine would have been much more comfortable if Anne had been just a mistress.

Welllllllll. Katherine was capable of lying..... she lied to her father about her first pregnancy from shame. And 5 months is quite a long time in a bed with a 16 year old boy. And i don't thiink he was ill the whole time, they both got sick after all, and she recovered quite quickly. So i take a different view. Also she was all about position and most particularly her daughter's postion. I think she would've made her peace with her own conscience in the pursuance of her rights, After all there was a dispensation and with Catholicism all is forgiven! She may have just focussed on the propriety and put those steamy nights in Ludlow with Arthur behind her.

So many people misunderstand Catholicism. All is not forgiven! Catholicism is salvation by works not by faith alone. You can commit a mortal sin and be unforgivable. I truly think that Katherine would have believed that if she lied to the Pope, she would have gone straight to hell.

@@jamiemcvay130 Mortal sins are forgiven if you repent and confess. Indeed, in Catholic theology God not only forgives but "forgets" sins that are repented of. But I agree, Catherine wouldn't have lied to a priest, let alone the Pope.

Catherine had a true quandary. Her parents had sent her to England to be queen consort and a tie with Spain. She had Mary, who would have been declared a bastard if she had agreed with Henry. She, a proud princess of Spain, would have had to agree she had been living in sin for years. She thought her beloved husband was imperiling his own soul. Would she have lied about consummation of her first marriage? It is very believable that she would consider it the lesser of two evils.
