its fascinating how much of a turn around I personally made in my interests in life. I used to hate economics with a passion. obviously a lot of it had to do with capitalism being shoved down my throat without me even realizing, or lacking a mental capacity and knowledge of the world to realize why it rubbed me the wrong way so much. I felt something was off, but I had no skill whatsoever to explain to myself why. But nowadays, at age 39, I love this stuff. It can still get boring, but I think I've built some fundamental interest and a worldview that does make economics interesting to me (if in limited quantities).

I was a complete neoclassical chud until I was introduced to Anwar Shaikh's papers... They sure are highly mathematical, but if you understand it, it is very easy to see how fragile the orthodox theory is. Then I read Marx. That was it. No turning back. Shaikh's work 'Capitalism: Competition, Conflict and Crisis' is more easier to read for anybody interested in economics, without necessarily needing the math all the time. But before that, one should definitely read Marx, Engels Lenin and Stalin first.

Víctor is very kind towards austrian economics, considering what austrian economics liked to do with/to marxists
@Kolokommouna23 күн бұрын
Science doesn't base itself on slights and emotions. When he said that he respects the Austrians, he meant that their arguments made him stop and think. The persons behind the theories are irrelevant.
@Effective_tool_of_Satan22 күн бұрын
@Kolokommouna I was not talking about science but about the fact that those economists endorsed regimes like the Pinochet one.
@Kolokommouna22 күн бұрын
@Effective_tool_of_Satan exactly. You're talking about different stuff than Magariño. He is a scientist, he talked about how he was challenged intellectually, not about their actions.

Hi Victor - you were a great guest! Question: I know it's not necessarily the most rigorous approach, but has anyone tried to come up with some kind of weighted composite index for "industry size"? First, calculate that metric, plug in into many models, tweak the factors/weights until you can find one that seems explanatory for a large number of simulations (95%+ or something?) Sorry if this is a silly approach for reasons that I don't understand. I'm a scientist not an economist, so I tend to think as an experimentalist. Also, very brave of JT to take a hard line stance against forced child labor. 😂😅

The tiktok style subtitles are really distracting and ugly. I really don't know what a compromise would be. I'm all for people with audio/voice/speech procesing issues having these if they help, but it comes at the cost to some of us being a really hideous viewing experience. Sure, we could look away, but we shouldn't have to. Can tiktok conventions stop infecting everything please?
