I have been searching this issue for years. I know it's an inflammatory issue. When it happens to me it comes on in a flash and I can put very little pressure on that knee. It burns and feels like the inside of my knee is tender and inflated with air. The sharpest pain is very close to the edge of my skin on the inside of knee about 1 inch down and runs down the calf right near the edge of shin bone. The only other things I've noticed is It can also intermingle with Sciatic nerve pain. When any of the surrounding muscles in hamstring, thigh, glutes and tibialis anterior are tight I can get flare ups that seem like actual knee pain but it's really the Saphenous nerve being restricted by tight muscles. Best option is stay limber and try to free up all the stuck muscle fascia connective tissue. Great video here!

I am so glad that I found this channel! I was diagnosed with infrapatellar knee bursitis but it's going on 3.5 months now and the doctors are saying that this has gone on for way too long. I'm starting to think this is something else other than just bursitis. I've been getting chiropractor treatments that have really started to make me feel better. He's been working on my knee and then on my lower back. I can feel everything loosening up. I haven't been able to walk for about 2 months but if anyone needs to hear this I would get your back and knee checked out by a chiropractor and then do the exercises from this video. Most things don't require meds and surgery. Take what the doctors say with a grain of salt. Most of the time they don't care anyway. Fix yourself and trust your gut! Please respond to this comment if it helped at all!

This looks very much like the places that are affected on my left leg. In summer of 2021, I had an injury to the left knee due to a sudden slipping forward of my front leg, with the left leg planted and twisted (knee twisted toward the interior). I had been attempting to climb over the shipment of fascia boards that were wrapped in plastic wrap. The plastic wrap was wet, and the reason I climbed over it was because I had to put something away on the other side where there was no way around. Anyway, right leg slipped forward and I went into a sudden split motion. The knee was very inflamed for a long time, and the x-rays had come back normal (I knew they would, it doesn't feel like a bone-related pain but she ran the test anyway). I have somewhat normal movement and function of the knee, but it's more so this aching, stiff-feeling pain in the back of the knee, inner and outer sides of the knee, with aching pain down the front of my shin. This would happen if I was too active or was standing too long. Now, though, the aching has more so turned into aching with numbness all the way down the front of my shin and on the top side of my ankle. And the front of my left thigh is not so much water, but it feels like its going numb. Different presentations than described in the video, but still pain and numbess which feel like nerve pain. I have also been seeing a chiropractor but only since Mid-March. We have had a lot of things we are trying to fix, but I will bring this up to her since the rest of the treatments have been helping quite a bit. We are working on reverse cervical lordosis, compressions in the thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and my SI joint has been misaligned. I was getting chronic neck and shoulder spasms. She has to jam into my rotator cuff area as well. My right hip flexor is much tighter than the other she said too, and she does the soft tissue therapy as well. It hurts like crazy (she has to jam her thumb into my hip flexor to get it to release). But possibly she can do something about the knee! I hope so! I have hyper-mobility so that puts the joints at even more risk of injury from simpler things. So far there's much, much improvement with my conditions, so I definitely believe chiropractic care does work.

@@susanbourque Yes! I took a fall as well when it was raining outside down a few stairs in late December and didn't feel any pain until two weeks later. It's a very long story but when I finally made it to the chiropractor he told me that my tibia (lower leg) was rotated outward and that my entire left side was pulled up an inch so I was definitely out of alignment which I'm sure caused some of my left knee swelling. He said it's important to make sure your body is in alignment while it is trying to heal because the misalignment can delay healing or make it so that it never fully heals. No orthopedic doctor or physical therapist talks about chiropractic treatments or alignment. They just want you to get injections and take medication and have surgery. But from what I've heard most of the time these things end up damaging you more or not helping at all. After just three or four treatments I immediately felt a huge difference with my knee loosening up and was able to slowly start bearing weight again. I could literally feel it more in alignment. I'm still doing PT exercises at home while getting the chiropractor treatments but have stopped going to PT because one of the things they showed me re-injured me all over again last week. It was a nightmare. My mom once said to do more of the things that feel good and those are resting and icing, PT exercises I can tolerate at home, and the chiropractor treatments. I'm going on 3.5 months now but I'm slowly starting to feel some relief so hopefully I'm going in the right direction.

Thank you for the best informational videos I've found on both sciatica and the saphenous nerve causing knee pain. After a recent L5-4 extension to my L3,my right side sciatic pain was totally gone, however severe left knee pain replaced it and was worse than sciatic pain. Now 3 weeks later, my surgeon tells me he knows nothing about saphenous nerve pain, which causes skin pain ( painful to the touch) in the calf, inner knee pain and shooting pain in both the thigh and the calf muscles along with difficulty walking unless I have strong pain meds to take the edge off. My surgeon is a Neurosurgeon and knows nothing about it, yet your experience does! Next week I'm getting a nerve test to help determine my fate. Either there was an error on the operating table or inflammation remains in my lumbar area causing this nerve problem. Thank you so much for the exercises and being one of a few who have a clue about this inner knee pain and helping others!

hey dr David, appreciate this very clear explanation about inner knee problem, especially that it is not a "problem". After 30 years of high tech "butt sit" jobs I thought at the age of 57 to run again..:) .my big passion,and quickly get back to half marathon and more. But my mind may still be flexible and strong, the body paid a price during those "butt sit" years and I always get some minor but disturbing injury that stops progress. During my last runs, I used barefoot running shoes for a change, and suddenly got this sharp nerve pain signal on the inside of left knee. I stopped running, tried icepacks without good result, but when rubbing massage oil on the part where the ligaments connects to the shin bone became so painful that even touching this part of the bone was over sensitive. However I could do any strength training without pain...now three days later sometimes those nerve stings come back during a walk. And as you confirmed...my glutes, hips and lower back are the cause and I have been denying that for a long time. I have always been a self learner so I now seriously start to work on that and not adding miles before the core is stable. When that doesnt work, your program will be the next step. Thanks again.

Thank you DR for this information. I sit here with tears in my eyes as I have been battling for so long with this. I was an ultra-marathon runner and had a small motorcycle accident hurting my right foot. Since then, things did not work out for me. I visited 4 physio therapists, 3 knee surgeons, 3 neurosurgeons, chiropractor, and some Dr doing nerve testing with electrical signals, various scans, exercises, .... and my nerve is painful constantly. I gave up running for 3 years now ... can do 4km and then it pains like hell, and this week decided to do my own research and found this video... perfect fit for what I experienced... now need to decide next step! This is what is wrong with me! Bless you!

The 28 day knee health and wellness boost program really works! I’ve been struggling with patella bursitis from overworking my knee (too much running, while walking 35,000 steps per day for my job). But, I’ve noticed that I’m feeling my nerve too, because I feel water on my knee and I sometimes feel waves of feeling (a cold feeling) mostly going down my shin. Both of these conditions are not painful for me, luckily. But, I still have a highly active job that I love, so I’m trying to fix my problem with these exercises, without quitting my job. I feel my conditions are getting better. I took a month off of work and rested my knee until the knee doctor said to go back to work. I had weight bearing X-rays and an MRI and nothing is wrong, all they could see was mild bursitis. The knee doctor told me this just takes a long time to go away. I also saw pts and they were strengthening my quads and hamstrings and my condition didn’t improve until I started this program. Hopefully, this will get rid of my problem completely, right now it comes and goes. 🤞

The medical system is a joke. They're only good for ordering tests and blood draws. After that you will have to do your own research and look up everything yourself to develop a customized wellness plan for yourself. Because there is no way in hell the doctor is actually going to try to make you better through helping you develop a customized plan. That's why all of us are on KZbin trying to find answers. It's really sad. But I really like this channel and I've tried some of these exercises and they really make my knee feel better! @@valente7436 I'm doing a lot to try and improve butt strength. I also try to lessen the movements that are a problem for me. For instance, sounds weird but shopping is a problem for me. When you are shopping (groceries) you turn all the time from one side to the other and also pushing the cart left and right which puts pressure on my knees. Yes should be easy but that is where I get painful knees again. So I trie to go slow on shopping (yeah sounds like a grandpa here haha. I'm 47) and minimize those moves that make it worse. And at the same time work out my legs more where I concentrate on my butt muscles. I would never use pain killers as then you will not be able to feel what movements are a problem for you. I am not there yet but I do have some progress. Also walking backwards (especially uphill) is one of my favorite exersizes but that is hard to do if you don't have a place to do that. good luck, and don't give up.

Hello, I keep coming back to your video about saphenous nerve injury as I find you “ hit the nail right on the head” with your plantation of where it is in body, hat it affects etc. I hav been on this journey for a year now…finding diagnosis, seeing specialists etc. in my case the saphenous nerve is entrapped ( just in the spot you point out in the video. I had it confirmed by an EMG it is causing neuropathy in my leg and the inside of my foot where the foot runs. You’re right about no one knowing what is is. It took 8 months to get a proper diagnosis. I am now under the direction of a Physiatrist ( Pain Doctor ) who is pointing me in the right direction and believes there may be a treatment I can get that may help relieve the entrapment ( an injection but not a nerve block)? Anyway, through all this I really have not found any physiotherapist that could tell me exercises I can do for this condition. Do you have a more detailed video that I could follow along with to do exercises for the saphenous nerve? I know you mention an exercise in this video but just wondered if you had a more detailed video. Thanks so much. You are the only one that gives such a detailed description!

Last year I went to an Ortho doctor about it with the same exact result you indicated: "possible meniscus tear" "arthritis" (which I do have since I am 69 years old). Got sent to PT but by that time, I had been having symptoms for about 6 weeks and it was already resolving by itself. I have a spot that is so sore on the medial side of my knee if you brush it it is painful. The pain has at times has extended downward toward my shin as well. Thank you for this video! I at least have an idea of what I may be dealing with. I am sure there may be some issues with arthritis going on with my knee/s but, this seems to be clearly what I am going through. B

Great information. I have been told my physician I have a saphenous nerve problem (follows all the symptoms you mentioned). My problem seems to stem from a MACI knee surgery I had and damage to the nerve. The pain block (Iovera) has been only partially helpful for me. I look forward to trying some of your suggestions.

I’m a runner of 20 years. Geared for sprinting. I also love cross training on bike and enjoy indoor rowing on the side. It’s normal for me to have a higher load, though I do also get recovery. I was doing a winter run build and starting late November my right side hip started to get sore. It was prevalent with easy pace endurance runs and even more so with speedwork. I ignored it figuring stretching and such would eventually go away. Also starting early November, my low to medium endurance rows would turn into training for the sub 8 min 2k row test with a friend. I’m light weight cat so it was no easy feat. We did train and I was strategic about when I’d do my row workouts. That test was mid January and I reached my goal and was a couple seconds faster. I was still doing my run routine and I went back to my standard run schedule after that. (45-50 miles a week but I’m use to that and I was rowing instead of biking so the load seemed normal). However, rowing that power is a solid push. The sore hip was there from running already. I guess the stars aligned, and a week later would be my last 13 mile Sunday long run day. Run was fine, but immediately AFTER, just slowing treadmill and stopping, I felt a sudden strong feeling in my inner right knee, same side as hip sore. I did RICE for 2 weeks with very very easy cycling bc it seemed to be fine. I tried a mile end of each week and that feeling would creep up a mile in, but was fine up till that mile. After 2 weeks it was time for a PT. I’ve been with her for 6-7 weeks. She does not think a tear or anything like that but does think it’s all muscular. I have full range of motion in knee and can bear all my weight on it. When I go up into a hip bridge, I can feel a tug of something in that inner knee. We have targeted trigger points and that seemed to help but she’s been having my work my glutes to help with hips while dry needling trigger points and massaging and loosening up quads and VMO etc. I’ve been cross training on bike and that seems to go ok. I was able to get up to a 5k this way after trigger point release and strengthening glutes. But then I went backwards and that feeling is coming back. I find that if I run first, I can go longer. But if I do a little bike to warmup I die quicker. I can walk fine, stairs fine, bike is good but I literally just cannot run and it’s the one thing I have goals in. I realize there’s shock absorption. I’ve spent 6-7 weeks doing all my PT daily and trying hard not to give up. I work the glutes with her exercises and they burn, I stretch etc. why does this feeling continue to come? It runs just above and thru the soft spot of inner knee next to cap. It starts and gets worse as I continue to run. I can get off before it gets bad and massage ALL OVER quads and glutes with the gun and stretch and then I can go again. I feel like the hip still gets a little sore with this minimal run. It’s crazy bc I’m not in any pain and look like I’m not injured. It’s just this discomfort that I cannot run through when it starts always a mile in. I find it strange I can bike how I do using hips (differently I realize) and knee yet I cannot run! I’ve worked so hard and it seems so easy and simple but I cannot seem to run. Im discouraged. This seems like a long time for something like this. I don’t have the funny bone feeling at the knee. But I very much have the “everything seems fine!” Thing. She doesn’t think an mri will say anything. She seems pretty set that continuing what I’m doing will get that inner knee pain to stay away but it’s like a rubber band in feeling when it recoils back followed by tenderness when I walk. If I don’t run a few days and I bike, then I can go REALLY easy pace run and MAYBE get to 5k. Ugh

Then, all of a sudden I have this nerve issue on the inside of my knee, same one I have runner's knee on. It's very sensitive to the touch and every step I take it's bothersome. I'm pretty sure it's the saphenous nerve, from your helpful video. I'll try going to my physio and see what she says.

Hey Boney, sorry to hear about your patellofemoral pain syndrome and saphenous nerve problem. Those often do happen together :-( Best of luck with going to your physio! Be careful!!! If your physio is not up to date on best treatment for your patellofemoral syndrome, they'll have you working on your quad muscles excessively and worsen your knee over time. Usually physios that specialize in post operative care do this to people that have not had surgery. They're not trying to harm anyone, they just aren't specialized in helping people avoid surgery.

I think I have this problem! About 20 months ago I slipped down a hill, my foot dislocated and end of tibia and fibula broke off. (Stretching my inner ankle, foot went totally sideways) Had surgery where hardware was inserted… long recovery. While I was in the walking boot my inner knee started to hurt a lot. This pain seemed to shoot from just above the end of the tibia, up my shin to my inner knee and then sometimes up the inner thigh. Got done with all the PT for my ankle and inner knee pain persisted and I went and got an MRI. They said it was arthritis and sent me back to PT. A few more months of PT and my PT starts to think it’s maybe the tendon getting irritated from the hardware and I agree so I went to get the hardware taken out. While I was in the boot after that second surgery it was REALLY bad, probably from the weight of the boot and it was once again shooting up my inner thigh. Don’t remember if I ever mentioned that to the PT. That surgery was July, finally quit going to PT in September just assuming the pain will always persist due to the injury. So today I was feeling around the knob that’s the end of the tibia, and I felt this tendon like thing and it was very tender. And when I rubbed it my knee began to hurt more. And I googled and saw that there’s a nerve there. I think that this may be the issue! I probably won’t bother going back to PT having diagnosed myself but will try some foot and glute stuff at home. That’s the other thing, since my injury my inner foot has always been painful and tender and weak feeling and that whole over a year of PT never seemed to help. It’s always cramping and I have thought I need to try to exercise it but now I’m extra motivated. Thanks for this informative video 🙂

Thank you! Very helpful, I suffered an injury while at work where my leg went through some rollers and created a ball, right below my knee on my inner shin. I first started having foot issues where my 2nd toe was throbbing every time I walked. Now the pain is hitting my inner knee. I couldn't walk for 2 days with severe pain until I watched this video and realized i must have pinched my saphenous nerve when i got injured. I started flexing my butt and thigh muscles and the pain subsided on my knee, I don't know how long it will last but the sharp pain is gone. Should I massage the saphenous nerve areas or would that further irritate it? Thank you again and I wish you all the best!
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Samantha! Yes this sounds like a saphenous nerve injury for sure! No! Don’t massage it, nerves don’t like to be massaged, they’ll end up feeling worse later and keeping the problem there longer that it needs to be. It seems like it was a bad injury since you got that ball on your inner shin. That’s a sign that it might take you months to fully recover. That doesn’t mean you be in severe pain and unable to walk that long. That may only last 1-2 weeks while the bump goes away. But you might have lingering problems for 1-3 months after. Possibly longer if you are irritating the nerve and not allowing it to rest and heal. That’s how nerve problems are. Definitely keep up the glute exercises that you can take pressure off the nerve. That will give you the best chance at healing as fast as possible.

I got ACL surgery (hamstring graft first but too thin and patella graft st thr end) and they did thr nerve block right after. My first 2 days were fine, resting and elevating and all that. Day 3 and 4 I could even travel and I was outside in the sun and pretty active (plus resting and icing and all that). Day 5 I decided to rest more so I didn't leave the bed except for my exercises and bathroom. On Day 6, Monday, I started to feel pins and needles on my shin (which was still "asleep" from the block or the anesthesia). The pins and needles have gotten worse, now sometimes I feel burning pain and I also get sudden shocks or acute pain in different parts at a rate that I consider frequent. The interior of my knee also hurts and my bruising is slowly disappearing, but this pain from the nerve is the worse thing I've felt. I've been icing, resting (except for my ACL exercises), elevating and wearing the compression bandage but the pain is too much. Any recommendations?

Been doing Femoral nerve flossing physio rehab exercises 3 times a day for the last 6 weeks or so -with minor alleviationin pain and discomfort. Hi… just if I can add my two cents here( I’ve been dealing with this for two years). The saphenous nerve is the largest sensory nerve in the body. It’s related to and starts in the lumbar spine and then turns into the femoral nerve which starts at the top of the leg ( the groin area which may affect the area you are talking about) then joins up with the saphenous mere e which goes right down to the inside of your foot. Hop this helps!

Do disc herniations cause the inner knee pain due to the main route of the nerve running all the way down to the ankle.
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy Жыл бұрын
Hey D Mel, If you have a problem with a disc in your back, it can cause various issues, including pain that goes down your leg. This happens because the biggest nerve in your body starts in your lower back and goes down your leg. Sometimes, this can make your leg feel painful, tingly, or even numb. When a disc in your back isn't in the right place, it can lead to pain in your lower back and down your leg. This condition is often called sciatica. This pain can also affect different parts of your leg, like the area near your inner knee. But remember, inner knee pain can also come from other things like problems with your ligaments or tendons, or even pain that comes from somewhere else. To figure out exactly why your knee hurts, it's important to talk to a healthcare expert who can examine you and understand your symptoms. If your inner knee hurts and you're worried it might be because of a disc problem or something else, we suggest seeing a healthcare provider. They can carefully check your condition, tell you what's causing the pain, and suggest the best ways to make it better based on what's going on with you.

Hey Giovanni, that still sounds like a saphenous nerve problem. When it comes to nerve problems they can happen in anyone. If the nerve is being pinched somewhere you will get electric shock like pain along the areas that nerve follows. The saphenous nerve comes from the anterior thigh down the leg into the back of the knee and then down into the calf. There are also branches of the saphenous nerve that come off around the knee and down into the calf as well. Hope this helps!

Is it possible that I injured this nerve bc my compression socks were too tight right behind my knee? I have this pain now and it won’t go away.

This is exactly where I have a popping ligament/tendon or something else when I straighten my knee? Its a very tender spot, but when warm and put through fullROM, it lessens. Is this that nerve that can be popping in the meniscus area?

watched this a few days ago and came back to shoot my shot and leave a comment in hopes to maybe get a reply. As you said, I am in PT and believe I have saphenous nerve pain. PT has honestly been googling things to help but mainly have been trying to help me strengthen my thigh muscles - much like you said happens. I'm going to work on strengthening my glutes on my own time. My PT said a theragun may relieve my pain if i run it up and down my inner leg and we did it once in clinic and in the moment it felt good but for a few days after it was definitely sensitive. could the response maybe just mean my body wasn't used to it or does it mean i shouldn't do it. i'm considering making the investment to buying one but don't know if it could end up doing damage. not enough information to lean me one way or the other so i figured i would try asking here!

I usually tend to get the pain in the knee only when I chip the ball when playing football. I also have a slightly swollen ankle. Could that be causing the knee pain?

So even though my squat form is quite good, I've worked with several powerlifting coaches and I was able to hit a 270 one rep max a few months back.. My knees do not cave in at all during my squat. However, I do not feel my glutes during my squats at all whatsoever... Never during and never sore after.. I honestly think some of us are just built differently

Hey Katie, You are absolutely right! Everyone is built differently and everyone experiences pain and discomfort quite differently as well.
