Why is everyone hating on the interviewer? He's giving her room to breath, she was able to speak...which is what we all wanted. Most interviews now are 2min frivolities consisting of questions such as "what did you have for breakfast?" or "how's the new album going?". This was her chance to shed light on the past, and she did. So shhhh.

Erykah is an extended family friend. My wife introduced Roy Hargrove to the world. Erykah's God mom used to take her to see my wife perform. South Dallas is in fact a vast reservoir of jazz and R&B talent, to wit, Cedar Walton, James Earl Clay, Shirley McFatter, Roger Boykin, David Fathead Newman, and on and on and on. I love E, she is a Goddess and a National Treasure!

Thats dope. I'm a professor and I'm trying to write an article on the place of "Africa" for these artists. I wondered if you knew anything about her heritage beyond the important southern African American sensibility? I read once that her mother was part Nigerian but also heard that refuted. Is she part Nigeria? Thanks ahead of time. Also, is your wife an artist?Are you related to Shirley McFatter? Thanks in advance and yes South Dallas is dope.

I'd just like to point out that around 1:15 she mentions frequency... All things have a frequency. Frequency is also a tool radio and tv stations use. Remember, "guns don't kill people, people kill people" applies to all tools. It depends on the users' intentions. She intends to use frequency to free people. Of course it won't get radio play. They'd tweak it anyway. Just saying. And this is from 2011. Google 432 Hz.

She is quite honest and authentic in her music because you don't see her clamoring do duets with J-Lo Beyonce, Mariah Carey or any other really famous jazz artists. I understand where her style musically. And I'm glad she mentioned that people are patient with her process as an artist because that's how we've ended up with her style of music because it really is her style.. it's not jazz... it's not funk... it's her! I'm just browsing through the comments and I can only assume most people haven't seen her do many interviews. There was an old one she did on Conan(or maybe Letterman, it was right when she put her first CD out) and she talked how she used to write for comedy and proceeded to kill the whole thing with her off the wall and snappy humour. It's still one of my favorite interviews and I'm not surprised she got cast in that film with Duchovny as a mostly unseen person talking to a younger version of his character. This woman is amazing.

That J Dilla story made me shed a tear and I don't even know him. But Erykah speaks some real deep stories that makes you just want to listen, no talking whatsoever. Sometimes, I have my moments when I'm talking to myself. Well, I don't even want to say that because I do be talking to someone, it's just nobody else can see them. Then my mom will ask who you talking to and I just be like myself. Then one time I told her i'm talking to an imaginary friend that can only understand me better than anyone can.

Erykah's energy exudes throughout... 💫💎 It's about the chemistry... it fell flat on this interview. He may be full of musical knowledge,but he and the audience just don't have that vibe....
@tiasschoolnyc9 жыл бұрын
I think this interview was so insightful, we really got to hear some major details within a quiet and respectful forum. At first I thought the interviewer was not bringing out the most in her with his lack of questioning but if you JUST and ONLY listen as if it was a radio interview the feeling changes. I'd advise everyone to go back to hear without WATCHING while he asks questions, it's clear he knows her well and understands what pops her to elaborate or trail off into a very personal place. She is enjoying the vibe in this interview.... Other times when the interviewer is too chatty she becomes closed off and uses sarcasm or gets sharp tongued as we black sisters can do at times to put the ball in our court -but she only does this once when an audience member's question asks about another artist (DeAngelo).... She remarked "he's studying quantum physics " I believe that was the only time she seems perturbed. ...and seriously why would anyone ask that during another persons moment??

"Treats" are the musical versions of "Tweets". It is so reminiscent to hear Erykah mention "hyperspace", a word I learned while in school, the 2nd time, to complete my undergrad in the early 90's. So great to hear this interview because the Baduizm effect still resonates in my spirit. I'm amazed & even more impressed to see how Erykah is ageing/maturing. I believe she's going to be a professor sometime soon as this video is like a Master Class. Her wisdom & experience is so compelling to me. Loving this lady!!! Wow! Loved when she said, "I wrote that", in response to "Did you sing on 'Jimmy was a Rock Star'? ". I always thought she was an ATL girl from her accent, cause I grew up in NC, but Dallas is okay too.
