Astronomers have found a system of seven Earth-sized planets just 40 light-years away. Using ground and space telescopes, including ESO’s Very Large Telescope, the planets were all detected as they passed in front of their parent star, the ultracool dwarf star known as TRAPPIST-1.
Three of the planets lie in the habitable zone and could harbour oceans of water on their surfaces, increasing the possibility that the star system could play host to life. This system has both the largest number of Earth-sized planets yet found and the largest number of worlds that could support liquid water on their surfaces. This ESOcasts describes the findings and shows a little of what they might mean.
The artist’s impressions in this video are based on the known physical parameters for the planets and stars seen, and uses a vast database of objects in the Universe.

40 light years away ? It would take us with our current technology about 20 million years to reach there.

Too bad red dwarfs are far more erratic than main sequence stars. These exoplanets better have kickass magnetospheres. Just saying, brotato chips.

Where is the reference to the Space Engine planetarium?! I think it's unfair to hide such gorgeous project.

What will NASA even do if we discover that these planets do indeed harbour life? Will we try to contact them in some way? What are NASA's plans?
@demo2382
@demo2382 7 жыл бұрын
Well I think these planets are a lot younger than earth. If there was life, they may be in the early stages so I dont know if contacting them will pan out. Though it wouldnt hurt to try. But I'm sure NASA's plan are to do what they can only do at this time..... and that's just keep studying them. There are plenty of organizations out there already looking into deep space travel.

Planets do not hand out data to nassholes. There is no way to even understand what a planet is, ever seen a planet with your own eyes. I will tell you what their data is based on, disinformation to the masses.

We already lost count of the number of earth like planets. Soon people will lose interest,unless a means of efficient and fast transport to these worlds be found.Then what is this insistence on earth size planets ?Why not accept any size offered there , may be the bigger the better?and what if humans poison out their earths atmosphere before being able to escape there ?shouldnt they look into preserving their own planet first, and change their genetic structure to withstand the cosmic journey,as a prerequisite to colonies these worlds?
