And the flag raising in Mt. Suribachi remains one of America's most iconic patriotic pictures. Glad you're watching a video to get the full story behind that and just how brutal that battle and the Pacific War in general was.
@chemislife3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: That picture was staged. The original flag was much smaller and was placed by a coast guard member that happened to be there and had a small flag with him. The media didn't like the optics of taking pictures of that so they had a bigger flag and pole to make a more impressive picture to headline the articles they wanted to write.

@@chemislife actually the famous flag raising picture wasn't staged, when Rosenthal was asked he thought he was being asked about a gung ho picture he had taken, his famous picture he didn't even know how it would turn out as he didn't actually look through the lens, amd just kind of clicked the shutter button. Wasn't until he saw the photo much later that he realized the picture he was asked about was that flag raising. It was the second flag as the first had already gotten destroyed in the high winds on top of the Mt. Sorry for the long explanation lol

I always find it interesting when we in the west talk about the Japanese being "Brainwashed". We have honored the memory of the Spartans for over 2000 years. A people who adhered to a code of "Victory or Death" in Battle. When England faced a Nazi invasion Winston Churchill spoke of fighting until the end - "We will never surrender". Japan as a nation was preparing to do exactly that. Having Uncles who fought the Japanese, and having stood an several of the small islands that the Japanese died by the thousands to defend - even knowing that they could not win. It gives me pause. Remember, until 1945, the Japanese had never lost a war in over 1000 years.

Capsize no, move to the side not very much. Water does not compress, it can only get out of the way and the duration of impulse from the guns firing is too short for much water to get out of the way. However the turrets can break or cause fractures around them in the ship. There were times turrets had to be removed or fired in a different order to avoid damage to the ship and to avoid loss of accuracy between shots.

Re: remark @ 13:30. Prior to the US Marine invasion of Peleliu in 1944, the Japanese focused on mass charges to drive the Americans off the lands they occupied (a tactic that is, in one video game, referred to as "Zerg rushing"). Needless to say, this tactic cost the Japanese a lot of men compared to Americans lost. The Japanese changed their tactics, from mass charges to digging into defensive positions, and it was at the Battle of Peleliu that the Marines first came upon this new tactic - which was the reason why the American casualties skyrocketed in the ensuing Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa (April 1945) compared to the number of Japanese defenders killed.
