Far From Home, WandaVision, Shang Chi, these three installments have one in-universe question in common. Where is Doctor Strange? He was unavailable, he didn't sense the Hex, he wasn't with Wong and the others studying the ten rings? Am I the only who is concerned of where he is?

I haven’t seen the movie yet, and I got as far in this review to when Hector quotes Wenwu calling Katy “American girl” and “What’s your Chinese name?”. Hearing this as an Asian American makes me real happy. Because most Asian immigrants/westerners have two names. An English name and a name in their native tongue. And I’ve been telling my non-Asian friends that even if we do “go back to our own countries,” we’re considered westerners. We’re still foreigners to them, which I think was aptly reflected when Marvel cast Simu and China was like “He’s not Chinese he’s a westerner and he doesn’t fit our ideal of beauty,”.

@boredasian94453 жыл бұрын
@@NonaPrince I can see where you're coming from honestly. The way I see it, the technique Wen Wu couldn't beat was his wife's, and he probably never tried to counter it because he wanted to change his ways and be peaceful. And when she died, he had no way to remember or find someone to fight who had that same Ta-Lo fighting style. When Shang-Chi adopted it for himself with the help of his aunt, he gained the ability to have an advantage above his father. Plus he has the blood and power of his father and his mother inside of him, as well as the heart of the dragon, which Wenwu doesn't. I personally found the ending to serve poetic justice and show the great chinese folklore/storytelling and the morals of respect for life, parents, and those who came before. Invincible was great but Wenwu was not as evil as Omni Man in any way. That would ruin the story imo. The thing about worthiness you mentioned does make a bit of sense in my eye but then again it is a marvel movie trying to appropriate culture. They want to represent them the best they can while also maintaining the "hero is the chosen one to win", but once again it makes sense because of the dragon heart.

I don't usually do this but....4th! I saw the movie last night and couldn't wait hear your review. I agree with you on many points. What I'm very happy with so far and continue to look forward to in Phase 4 is the reworking of the old formulas. I want things to be different. The D+ shows and Black Widow and now Shang-Chi are operating on a different but still familiar level. Like Adam, there were scenes where I forgot I was watching an MCU film and that also happened with Black Widow. I am not Asian-American so I can't speak fully to the authenticity of the film, but I really appreciated the prologue being in Mandarin, the characters talking to each other in Mandarin more, and the inter-diaspora jokes. The storytelling about the family drama was tight. I empathized with Wen Wu while also despising him for being an abusive father. I like that the sister had her own story line which I look forward to seeing more of. They gave us a hero who straight up murdered in the name of revenge and promised to kill his own father. I felt the emotional stakes here more than in many other MCU projects. The CGI was at times distracting. I understand that Covid likely affected the process and even in normal times some vfx houses just don't have enough time to finish properly. What bothered me the most was the moments where they likely comped in the actors' faces on the stunt team' bodies in the fight scenes and the blurriness Adam mentioned. I also agree with Agustin in the big monster battle, I lost track of where Shang Chi was on the dragon's body. The post-credit leaves us with a mystery that I am eager to see the answer to.

It's a really good movie that only fails to me in one primary element; and that is character arcs. SPOILERS: To start, I think that the father's arc is executed properly. His anger, devotion, and eventual realization is exactly what needed to occur. However, Shang-Chi and his sister, Xialing, did not feel as if they traveled much of an arc (and instead their story was mostly reliant on the father's arc). I was especially expecting more from Xialing, as she had a clear motive to be hesitant to trust her brother and yet it was entirely dropped almost immediately. I wanted to see Xialing deal with that trust struggle; and additionally, I wanted to see more payoff for the whole purpose of her character, which was to highlight how women were disregarded by the Ten Rings. In my opinion, she should have been right alongside her brother in the fight against their father, at least for a part of it - and I even think they should've shared the rings by the end fight. That scene where Shang-Chi holds onto her, refusing to let her go again, would've been so much more powerful if Xialing's arc was further capitalized upon. Imagine if that act of refusing to let go was her spark of returning trust for the first time in the film, and in that moment he shares five of the rings with her so that she survives. Now, their father's legacy is passed down to both of them, as was explained in the movie itself. Both are equally the children of their parents; and both should share that power, as they equally trained for it. If not this, then conversely that element of distrust should've been the primary arc that propelled Xialing to become this ambiguously motivated character she becomes in the post credit scene. Overall, it just feels like most of these characters did not travel a necessary arc to culminate the film.

One of the reasons this film is so good, this coming from Erik Voss of New Rockstars, is because it handles its villain with such care. You look at past Marvel films, most of them don't really have memorable villains. Exceptions being Thanos, Winter Soldier, Killmonger, and that's because those 3 villains are at the forefront of those respective films. They make you care. Now, we can add Shang-Chi to that list of MCU movies with superb villains. This film makes you feel for Wen-Wu, and the Legend Tony Leung absolutely killed it in that role. Definitely the stand out actor and character of the movie for me.

It definitely didn't feel like a typical Marvel movie. I loved Simu Liu and Awkwafina's chemistry and banter. "Did you bet against me?" "No." Looking coy while trying to hide a wad of cash. So funny. Katy singing Hotel California when confronted by one of the Ten Rings was hilarious. But Tony Leung, how cow was he great. Great performance but also a great physical presence. He sold everything his character was doing. Fantastic. It was also nice to see the movie was dedicated to Bradley Allan. He will be missed.

trust me, they ain't gonna give the one white dude in the movie a spinoff... Simu Liu, on the show Kims Convenience, literally went on a rant about how they're gonna give the one white star on the show, a spinoff...so no, that aint happening, he may appear in Xialing spinoff or something... but if they gave a whole new world of asian characters, and gave the one white dude a spinoff, internet would eat em alive
@Wolvy1143 жыл бұрын
@@WuMyth well the difference being that for KC, they literally cancelled the entire show to give the one white character a spinoff. Doing a small little D+ thing for fun while the main cast still has massive budget successful blockbusters would be essentially harmless.

Finally got to see this Wednesday. Had an operation last week so couldn't get to opening weekend, first time I've not been able to do that for a Marvel film. Anyway, loved this. Initial 3 thoughts: 1) Trevor Slattery is the gift that keeps on giving; 2) Awkwafina has major little old Asian lady energy (despite being in what? her 20's?), she's awesome!; 3) I am still racking my brain to think of another story where the antagonist is so SAD... It's not that Wen Wu is after revenge or even power per se, it's his desire to have his family back that's corrupted, and that's heartbreaking...

I wonder how Eternals will be spread throughout the teams as well, and if they have knowledge of the 10 rings 🧐
@rogerroger51713 жыл бұрын
There has been some discussion if the "beacon" which Wong described may be related to the Celestials. Also the gold power of the rings when wielded by Chang-Chi is similar to the power shown so far by the Eternals.
@hey6083 жыл бұрын
@@rogerroger5171 i think the best theory for me is that is more about to get to know the person who created the rings the chosen one is here instead to be a signal to bring someone bad. It will make sense to why it made the beacon now instead of before when his father had it (he was unworthy).

Saw the movie late Thursday night. First time in the cinema since 2019 so I splurged for a pricey D-Box seat that rumbles and moves with the action. All of the different types of fight scenes looked spectacular to me, as someone who isn't well-versed in either martial arts films or CGI in general. I did find myself wishing I could see certain parts of the movie in 3D though. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. My screening was in UltraAVX but I might go re-watch it again in IMAX format.

Overall I enjoyed the moral of the story and the kung fu scenes kicked ass. But a 7/10 from me.

Same sentiment...Great movie and overall review fam from Hector, Adam, and Agustin. On the CG...I had to give it a strong pass. The construct is a new beginning. (Humans fighting Supernatural Super-sized creatures). Marvel had to go Dragon Ball Z (Super Saiyan and Godzilla/Kaiju). I think it's a challenge to see the scale of the fights. If they had slowed down the creatures a little...maybe it would have worked. I also had to remember the epic fight scenes were in a different dimension were new powers exist. Honestly, Thanos collapsing and throwing a Moon at Stark on Titan...was totally cool and acceptable...I'm not sure how the Phase X Avengers fighting Galactus will work out.🤔
