Just saw the movie (it released today in Sweden!!) and I agree with Coy! To me, this moving while being the most non-human/“not centered around human people” movie in the MCU, it feels the most human. It’s a beautiful piece about humanity while not spoon-feeding you the answer. How humanity is broken and wrong in many ways but how it affects even the most powerful creatures.

I saw a preview for Eternals while I saw Shang Chi. Long story short I enjoyed Shang Chi I enjoyed Simu Liu and Aquafina's chemistry on screen as soon as both appeared on screen together I instantly fell in love with the characters and I loved the martial arts. In general I'd give Shang Chi a 9.5/10 Back to Eternals this is one of my most hyped films for Phase 4 mainly cause I'm a sucker for not well known characters being shown in the MCU. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a confirmation about a sequel for Eternals or Shang Chi or both either at Disney+ day or within the next year

For some reason, I have been unreasonably obsessed with Eternals "reactions" since Monday night premiere. And the reaction I loved the most was Coy's, and the reaction I was more concerned about (as in, feared that it augered badly for the film) was Greg's. So I both feared and looked forward to hearing this conversation when I saw it was up.///. What surprised me, is how conflict filled!, but genuinely mutually respectful and interesting your conversation was. A+ guys. I really loved hearing you discuss the film - I felt I learned so much about both of you, as well as your view of art, life, meaning -- as well as what you got out of the film. /// One thing I find really intriguing about this movie is how there is no consensus about who the best character in film is- people usually find one or several characters to really really love, but they are almost always different ones. The only one not mentioned as a favorite so far in my readings, is Ajak. And that is kind of remarkable. 9/10 really hit home for someone. Which I think says something really good about the film. that people can see themselves reflected or find beautiful for very differnt reasons. I do think Chloe Zhao's vision of humanity,; while seeing the brokenness and darkness, generally trends more optimistic, and I would expect that as this is a Marvel film, there were also probably some simplications she made for the sake of staying consistent with Marvel theme/mood. So maybe that is part of what Greg found frustrating - like if you are going to go action, go all out like Shang Chi - but if you are going to go have serious discussion, go deeper, more hard hiting . Still =I love that a film could give rise to a conversation this interesting.

From what I’m getting from Greg is that he wanted a formulaic film. For the lack of words “holding hand” through the whole film. I’m not saying Greg is wrong or isn’t smart for this film, he just wanted a close to perfect film. Again not saying Greg is wrong for this, maybe Greg just wanted something different out of this film…. Hearing from Coy and Robert Burnett and Campea I think I will like this movie a lot. Great discussion! Interesting how Greg mentions that he hoped the movie explored more balanced arguments for the side of humans not worth saving (I haven't watched the movie yet so I'm not exactly sure what arguments they come up with), but this is exactly the kind of thing I really wish films take on. It is when both sides of arguments are strong (whether correct or not) that when eventually a character goes to one side the decision feels more deserved and powerful. What I liked about Loki (spoilers), was that it had a lot of that strong views colliding between Lokis and He Who Remains. HWR although expository, had a great job expressing the rationale of having to control the entire multiverse and what should and shouldn't exist in order to prevent another multiversal war. Meanwhile, we have gone through the journey with Sylvie who was coming in from the emotional point of view, and we understand why she has to do what she has to do. Also, her decision is not just an act of revenge. The conflict is also a representation of free will in the face of certain doom. HWR decides that for what he deems is better for all life, he takes away the agency from all beings. Are we truly happy if we are just a bird in a cage fed and cared for, but never really able to fly above the nature even if there's more danger? HWR perhaps lived through and observed so much pain and suffering of countless lives that he was finally able to find a solution despite knowing its downsides. Also, with free will and multiversal possibilities opening up, we will face multiversal war, but may find a different, a better solution that will resolve all this. It's not like HWR would have finally found peace and would seek for another solution, or maybe he did plenty of that too and failed. The show does not explicitly say some of the last few points that I mention, but reveal enough of both sides to keep us justify all sides and think of possible talking points that make both arguments stronger than directly mentioned.

I like how this movie is going to have so much debating, and discussions afterwards. People are confusing this film for being boring, but it’s not, it’s just very heavy on lore, and how much they can take from this film, and expand upon it. That is exciting to me. @@imanigordon6803 Also, even if it’s not a good movie, the set up’s for the future will be worth it if it’s all done right. Hearing about what’s going on in the end credits, and pretty much everything else after this movie, I believe that we are on our way to see some awesome stuff. I fully believe that this movie will become more appreciated as it get’s older. Think of it as this, Thor The Dark Wold, is agreeable a boring film. Also, a very forgettable film, with a villain that completely humiliates the comic version. It still sets up a lot within the MCU. It gave us the Reality Stone, The Collector, Loki being king of Asgaurd for several years, creating conflict within the nine realms, and being the lead cause for Ragnorak to occur. So, as long as you keep this thought in mind, if it’s a boring film to you. It’s still setting up so many cool things for the future. Just giving my two cents.

To me, a person who had only started to get into the MCU after watching Infinity War, I loved the depth and variety of movies. I observe that people have forgotten that Thor started with a Shakespearean style. Other movies, like Dr Strange, is a little thought provoking too. Both movies, I would think are divisive. Then, through time, both of these characters end up being beloved (& in the case of Dr Strange, important). Give Shang-Chi and Eternals time to see how they are placed later in phase 4 or 5. I love how Marvel drops in unknown characters, tells their stories, and allows the audience to think deeply about the stories and have these discussions (both positive and negative). MCU will always have a mix of good and bad movies. Think big picture, because it seems like Marvel (Feige) does…

It was really interesting to hear Coy related so much to Druig and his Irish ness. For me, as an Irish person, one particular scene with Druig talking on a specific oppression beginning at that time just made so much sense to come from him, and it really felt representative about how Irish people like myself feel about our past.

How can Coy say he knew any character so well? They did the most surface of explorations for each that you couldn't understand each ones motives. Coy contradicts himself, saying he was connected to them and enjoyed being removed? I think Coy was doing ALOT of projecting.

I liked feeling removed as a human being from their decisions. I liked that people weren’t / ARENT the be all end all. While still understanding why each of them was making their decisions. It’s not that complex a concept. Being consciously removed while being empathetic. I think your doing a lot of projecting.

Really nice discussion. From your points alone I can already see some people in my group who'll probably like it less/have more mixed feelings while I'll probably enjoy it a lot more since I can get invested into any movie really hard without even realising most of the time, and I love philosophical conversations about origin and the worth of humanity as a whole, so I'm really excited for the movie but I should still be able to give some of these friends a warning about it being dense in dialogue or trying some things that may not work because they don't really dive in fully into them. I prefer not knowing too much but I like being able to manage my expectations a bit to know how to tackle these films, so it's great to have more context. Keep it up!

This was a fantastic review! Love how it was more of a discussion of story and characters, rather than this action set piece was cool or this joke was fun. You guys really got down into the nitty gritty without spoiling anything, kudos! From what I gathered the film was really good, but due to personal preferences there were things some people might love and others might not, which would either keep the film at just being good or elevate it to being fantastic. I feel like I tend to agree with Coy more on his reviews of films, so I may end up having his experience, also I was an avid Eternals comic reader so I already have that emotional connection to these comics characters, so I may already have that emotional weight that Greg felt he was lacking in this film. But overall, love your honest discussion about this film. Way better than some people reviewing it who say it is just another superhero film or it was boring because people were talking a lot...these people shouldn't be allowed to review film because it seems like they put out negative reviews or try to inflame fans just to get likes or because of personal beliefs on not liking Disney or Superhero films in general.

Just came back from watching the film and suprisingly I also really like the movie intellectually, but just didn't connect with it emotionally. I think I either needed it to be a solo movie about Ikaris, he and Sersei, Sprite, Thena and Gilgamesh or even Druig, any one of them could have had a great solo movie, or then for it to be a series or split between 2 or 3 movies. I needed more time to really care about the characters and feel the relationships between them. They kept talking about how they were a family, but I didn't really see enough to feel it. I don't mind movies that are more of an intellectual than an emotional journey, but a lot of scenes needed the emotion for it to work, and I just didn't have that. The only characters that I actually liked were Ikaris and Sprite, but even their endings would have held more weight with more time with them and with other characters they interacted with. Other than that I really did enjoy the movie though and am looking forward to seeing more. Overall I would probably give the movie an 8 or 8.5 out of 10 since I really did enjoy it, despite the criticism I have for it. Edit: I changed my rating upon further consideration, since I realized I enjoyed it more than I thought after a little more time to process and when ranking it in regards to other MCU movies. My criticisms however stay the same.
