There is no country in Europe called Europe, so your false equivalence holds no water. How about we look to the continent of Australia instead... A continent and country that share a name, and has the same usage of that shared name as we see in the USA. Ultra’s are groups of fans, and each ultra has at least 1 capo (captain). Some groups are very large, and some can be smaller but have the support of the other fans from within the same fanbase. No display is ever spontaneous. It is meticulously planned and take weeks, even months to prepare. Songs are created and each fan learns the words. These days a lot of the songs are spread via the internet. Sometimes a club can have multiple ultras groups and they don’t always get along with each other, this can be for a variety of reasons including politics and personality clashes. A lot of the time they don’t have problems though and just occupy different areas of the stadium. If this was the case they would also co-ordinate on displays. All of these tifos (displays) around stadiums you see are destroyed after they are used, usually burned. It would be humiliating if you kept a tifo and it fell into the hands of an ultra's group from a rival team.

If I'm not mistaken the game at 7:40 didn't matter for Aris that's why the fans threw the confetti in the court.

The easiest way to describe what is going on with crowds in Europe is like that. Everyone knows about the Malice at the Palace. If Ron Artest, that crazy guy, jumps in a Greek Crowd or Serbian Crowd and tries to throw punches he aint making it out intact and i am not exaggerating.
@strangelyjamesly40783 жыл бұрын
The confetti was probably an organised protest. These games are the exception, huge rivalries, etc. Mainly Greece and Serbia.

Basketball was invented in 1891... And came to Europe in 1893. You only had it 2 years longer than us.
@bloodrises38743 жыл бұрын
I think main difference is that in Europe we have so much teams. In any sport, sometimes in the same city there 2-3 big clubs and they want so bad to beat the other team. So when someone come to our arena, stadion we want to make them suffer with all we have so we can give our team slight advantage in order to win. In USA you have how many teams for NBA like 30 teams and even if one of the team lose all of the games that season there is no relegation. In Europe we have divisions if you are weak you go down to second tier, then to 3th until you skill match the division you deserve thats why we look crazy, no one want his team to go down :D

North American sports Fandom in stadiums (including Canadian Hockey) is an on rails experience, the "Franchise" is responsible for the atmosphere in the stands, they play music and write in big letters on the jumbotron what you should do the same way they do in the recording of sitcoms, laugh, jump, make some noise... In Europe, all is generated by the fans, they start the chants, they start the claps they make the atmosphere, sure there are stadiums that play songs but they are mostly there because of some kind of tradition and legacy. As you guys said, people in NA, even hardcore fans go to games to be entertained by the game, even in the places touted to be among the best experiences in their sports like the Habs at the Bell Center for Hockey, whereas Europeans are supporters, they come to watch yes, but also to play a part in the whole thing, completely different approaches. Also, teams aren't franchises, it's unthinkable for a team to move to another city or something like that, therefore the teams feel more ingrained in their local communities, though that is also the case for the more historic teams in NA like the Canadiens, Red Socks to name just a couple. That isn't to say that NA fans aren't every bit as much fans of their respective teams as Europeans are, but they are far less engaged and active in the experience when they actually go to the games.

@@scottirvine121 im a bit late but referring to it as communist is just incorrect, its authoritian, and in this specific case goes completely against the core principle of communism that it is class not national identity that divides people. One thing ia that the sane club in Europe has all sports, if you look up barcelona basket its the sanw club as the soccer one, it's like for instance, la Lakers had nfl and mlb teams. When you talk about religion, it's like more defending our turf pur part of the city /country. The arenas normally are nearby the stadium, so it's very common im Europe, I'm a benfica fan, a great team of portugal to support my team hockey team at afternoon and afterwards go on and support them at soccer in the stadium.

I believe it's everything down to High School events. Very strange, in most other countries it usually has to be an international competition or some major final for the national anthem to be played.

@zlaty463 жыл бұрын
tiny explanation. I'm from the Czech Republic and I think it's all over Europe that the sport, especially football, is taken as a religion. therefore, the police are usually present at every major match because the fans are doing anything for the club, the fans hate each other for someone who does not grow up in who is better if Sparta or Slavia so it is a very difficult understanding

In the video the fans were in Greece. It's different in Europe. It's not about the sport itself..it's about the love of your club. Every club in Europe has soccer team, basketball team, volleyball team, water polo team and even ping pong team.... and the same fans attend all their teams games. Even women's volleyball. These fans are organized professional fans. Some are on the teams payroll. They make chants, they light up flares, small bombs, even Flare guns. These atmospheres don't happen in every game..just the European games were it's against another country or against their rivalries. Usually the bigger and richer the team..the more fans they have. The fans are die hard fanatics who would risk their lives for their clubs. In the game with such atmospheres there is no kids, moms, or families attending. The chants are usually vulgar. Attending these games your legs go numb from the electrifying atmosphere. To attend these games you got be ready for anything. No opposing fans attend. And the goal is to scare the crap out of the opposing team....and it works most of the time. The police don't interfere because riots break out. This is the true meaning of home court. I don't think a average basketball fan from the USA could handle this type of atmosphere.
