Little practical note: The way that these chants often start is because in many English stadiums it's dead quiet it's not like here (Murrica 🇺🇸) where it's constant cheers or noise and loud ass p a announcers all the time. It'll be quiet enough where you can hear a single voice shout out something and if it's good everybody will 😂 or pick up the chant. You can't do that here at football stadiums or hockey stadiums or basketball stadiums doesn't work that way because our culture is naturally very loud. Over there the culture is very quiet but then you have drunk people LOL and if they say something funny all the other Brits will hop onto it. Hope that clears up how they get these chants started

The irony of that whole chant, it’s almost a certainty that every person chanting that also likely lives in social housing. Unless Manchester, with it’s horrific homelessness and unemployment rates, went all upscale all of a sudden and we all missed it? Nope, still a council estate infested shithole, so much so that Mourinho wouldn’t even buy a house there while he was manager. Same with the the likes of Wolves fans who unironically chant “feed the Scousers”, oblivious to the fact they themselves have much higher unemployment rates than Liverpool and Liverpool fans were literally feeding them, taking food to food-banks outside The Mollenieux before the game 😂🤦‍♂️ Awkward on both counts. The thing is, in the UK we are all like this with each other, friends, family and strangers. It's how we roll. It's a way of showing humour, love and fondness. If you can abuse and insult a person and it gets taken funnily and with good heart a special bond is made that is strong and long lasting. Most chants start pretty organically. A few people come up with a new one, start singing it, if the people around them like it, they sing along and so the thing grows. They all follow well-known melodies, so singing along is pretty easy. Eventually, a chant either dies out or becomes established.

One time I went to an away game against a team from Wales. Wales is quite rural and has an (unfair) stereotype that they all really “love” their sheep. Some of the fans literally brought these inflatable sheep with them so they could bounce them over the barriers and into the home team’s stands throughout the game!

The very first chant was made by the Welsh supporters at the Euro 2016 tournament. As a tiny nation, this was our second ever major tournament event we qualified for (after the 1958 World Cup, where we beat Brasil 1-0), and we didn't expect to do very well. Ergo, we sang about not wanting to go home, we were having such a good time, please let us stay! We reached the semi final, and got beaten by Ronaldo of Portugal. There were another 10 guys, but he's phenomenal... Many people slept on the beaches of France, because they hadn't booked hotels for more than a couple of weeks. Just didn't go home, called work to say "sorry, but we're actually doing well. Brb!" Good times.

In the UK, we have banter. We basically take the mic out of everyone and everything. Even if something is serious, we joke about it. Everything we do is banter, we don't take ourselves too seriously, we don't take other things people say too seriously. The thing is, most people don't get offended or if they do, they just laugh about it or find ways to lighten the situation through having a laugh. I used to work with a guy who was a Queens Park Rangers' fan. Before he settled down, got married and had a couple of kids, he would travel all over England to various places I knew about but had never visited. QPR were then in the Championship (second tier league below the Premier League.) I asked him how were places like Doncaster and Hull. He said he did not know. It was too dangerous. The match finished. He found his car and got the fvck out. No hanging about.

Going on the piss is British slang for going out drinking and getting really drunk. Having a good time. Like the term, getting pissed, getting smashed, getting drunk etc. George Best was a Manchester United Player but he got in the hall of fame for being one of England's best football players of all time. He unfortunately passed away due to being an alcoholic and he needed a liver transplant. He was known to enjoy drinking. So them singing, "When I die and they lay me to rest, i'm going to go on the piss, with Georgie Best." They want to go for a drink with him in heaven basically. It's a chant out of respect to one of the best football players who enjoyed a drink. People are saying that they would like to go for a drink with one of the best players of all time. Hope this helps to explain it. Also they are chanting this to the song called "Spirit in the sky." Which is a song by a British singer. The words are "Going up to the spirit in the sky, that's where I'm gonna go when I die, when I die and they lay me to rest, I'm gonna go to the place that's the best." So with the football player being called George Best and the fact that he passed away, it fits in to the tune of the song.

To explain the “the City is yours” chant, Man United are the most success and most watch team in England, Man City are the smaller but more localised support. When City over took United as the dominate team of the time, they claimed “the City was there’s”, United fans responded by pointing out they have 1000’s of unsold tickets every week and hardly ever sell out their stadium despite it being much smaller and City having their most successful period in history.

We have the off-side rule here, so when a team is attacking, and kicks the ball forward, his teams players cant be more forward than the last defender (except the keeper) . This is to stop forwards just staying around the other teams goal all the game. If you're off-side, the other team get a free kick. So when theyre singing about a players teeth, eyes or nose, theyre singing that their nose/eyes/teeth etc are sticking out so far, theyre always off-side. We take the piss out of the other teams and even our own teams, it's all football banter.

I am cracking up here too! Some of them are genius chants! PS "The Off-Side rule" seems to confuse people but quite simple (so I hope I don't do it injustice) basically, as the opposing team, as a player you cannot position yourself between the goal and just the goalkeeper, waiting for the ball to be passed to you, without at least one opposing team player to be either between you, or parallel to you, when the ball is passed. A good player can run into the empty space in anticipation of the ball being passed to you by your team, but not before it has already launched!

The United chant about Park wasn’t meant to be racially offensive. Park was a loved United player, the real insult was towards the scousers (primarily Liverpool fans). The United/Liverpool rivalry is arguably the biggest in English football. It goes deeper than clubs since Manchester/Liverpool is also one of England’s main cultural/city clashes.

When part of our ground was being developed there were always contractors of some description about and they all had chants sang to them. Most cops take chants as good craic as well. I have seen a few shows about US teams and really want to come over and visit. Would people in the US really be upset at piss take chants? Every fan loves it one of the few things that unites us all. you have to understand though these teams were grass roots and made their way from 100 years ago to today with the community behind them. Its rivalries and banter thats gone on for more than a century so you can expect no holds barred stuff from the fans. It can be brutal, even eviscerating but its all light hearted fun at the end of the day. English football means a lot more than an allegiance to an NFL team

hi guys the main difference is in the commitment the fans invest in their teams it is normally lifelong. New chants will go out once and once a few catch on it spreads like wildfire. when we start watching a game we do not move until half time and then when the final whistle. Some of the ones you showed were classic sarcasm when the home fans walked out when losing 5 -0 and were asked if it was a fire drill. Classic.
