So what the smog guys didn’t tell you and may not be aware of is there’s an actual set of drive cycle tests to make the emissions monitors pass. Each car is a bit different, but usually they’re along the lines of X speed +/- 5mph for 180 seconds, and then decelerate to X speed, then accelerate with X throttle, and so on. I’ve been able to reset the monitors with a simple loop around my town following those procedures and then checking with an OBD2 dongle that the monitors show “pass”

Most engine control systems will get into the readiness state with a good bit less driving than people assume. You could always just take an OBDII scanner with you and monitor the readiness state periodically so you don't waste a bunch of time.

I test drove the new Model 3 Performance out of sheer curiosity last month and had the same impression... Wow what a great car! I'd have a hard time justifying buying anything else for the price especially with fast charging available AT the tracks around here in the paddocks even. Side notes... The price is just under $55k if you get Gray with black interior, which means it DOES qualify for the $7500 rebate (if you yourself qualify) making it just $47,500. No strings no scams. But if you pick a different exterior or interior color it will not qualify. HOWEVER, people have been having issues with them at the track, only getting about 90 seconds at full power before overheating... Low power mode it could probably last a full session, but Tesla failed to install coolers for the system unlike Hyundai with the Ionic 5 N and some of the other cars in this test, meaning that if you want to do real track days with the Tesla you've got to modify it right off the bat with a bunch of aftermarket custom cooling setups (check the forums for details)

To add on to this, there actually is a period where even if the car has OBDII, it still has to have the exhaust measured and get put on the dyno. Only cars that are model year 2000 and up skip that.

The car photos, crouch down. Take the photo from the level of the door handles, a mildly cloudy day is best, never use a flash, and if you're selling a car and want to showcase the dash, drop the front seats and climb in the back seats with a 16:9 ratio. But the best photos are taken when your at headlight level. Depends on the car obviously, but pick the right background, or in a dealership, have a photo booth that was done when I worked in car sales. Also make sure the front wheels are straight if it's a stagnant environment. But the worst thing about being a car salesperson is the 90% of the customers...also don't take photos where you have your shadow and again...never use a flash. But I went from photo lab tech to car sales...so that's just my idea.

Smog isn't about the miles exactly. It's a series of different checks and it "takes about x miles" It needs to see things like "5 minutes at high rpm, check O2 circuit" "how fast did the system come to temp" "are the emissions valves working properly" Getting on the highway and setting cruise control for 50 miles each way is absolutely not going to work lmao. I usually told people "it's about 30-90 minutes of driving under different circumstances to reset it" ie, highway for 15-20 minutes, driving in traffic, driving at surface road speeds, etc. Every driving configuration you can hit. You're running self diagnostic programs, you need to use all the systems as intended 😂 Honesty you're wasting a ton of time driving that much... It's 90 minutes tops if you had a completely dead battery
