Underrated mention for redeemed villain is Accelerator who throughout the entire index series continues to make up for his morally unacceptable crimes. The vivid trauma he experiences for a majority of the series feels very real and his development is paced perfectly, I'd personally say he is right behind or tied with meruem in this aspect.

this make me remember of an antagonist from a novel my friend writes. The villain is busted, alien and pure evil. he labels himself as “God” and have full control of fate, space and time. he also have the power to manipulate words in the novel apparently. he want to delete the universe, he can do it whenever he want but the protagonist just says that he’s going to stop him. The protagonist gets killed by one of the antagonist’s “toy” before he even gets to the antagonist place but seeing the protagonist adventure make the antagonist feel interested in the world that’s he’s about to destroy. he apologizes to the citizen of the world then leave (the protagonist still dying, poor him).

For real, if I were to create a manga, I would definitely make the antagonist have a tragic backstory, who is later redeemed by the protagonist to the path of righteousness. Or, I would have an anti-hero protagonist clash with a tragic antagonist, with both of their ideals colliding so much that in the end, both have a deep down discussion on the fact that they both were wrong, marking the start of a new friendship. Also, I think Shigaraki is more of a destructive villain with a tragic backstory. His backstory is really tragic, and ngl, it made me cry a bit once I saw his backstory, kinda having me relate with his backstory, as I was also not allowed to become what I don't wanna be.
