You can already do that decently with ChatGPT4 and to a much greater extent with ChatGPT-4o (for 4o only if you are one of the lucky few who have been given access to the new voice features). I think Apple is clearly differentiating their intelligence features to focus on interacting with your personal data vs using 3rd party to get help with general knowledge.

Probably not. I’m in a similar situation except it’s my phone, a relatively new 15 Plus, that won’t support AI. I’m not going to upgrade so it will be annoying when I leave the house with just my phone and watch. The only consolation is that Apple may not release the best features until the iPhone 18. The 13 Pro was a popular model. If you have one of those and it’s unlocked, it has decent trade-in value.

Well, seeing that, you just use the Gmail app. You don’t use the Apple Mail app, which is supposed to be doing compartments or folders for stuff just like Gmail does. So I just wanted to know if it was included in the 18.1 at all or whether that was further down the line. Along with the integration of calendar and reminders

I can see Apple Intelligence helping regular people in their daily lives, especially if they’re busy or just juggling multiple priorities. I live a simpler life. My goal is to make it simpler. I use AI to find errors in assignments and explain what I got wrong. It would be pointless to have AI do it the work for me because you learn by doing. I also use it for research, so the integration with MacOS is welcome. The improvements in iOS 18 that I’ve been most excited about are those to Calculator and Notes. I’m withholding judgment on the new Siri until I see how it well it works.

A weird thing is that Apple intelligence tools in the EU IS available in MacOS 15.1 beta but NOT in iOS or iPadOS 18.1 beta. What’s up with that? If I change language and region plus Siri language to US English writing tools works. But only on Mac.

iOS18 has been one of the buggiest releases Apple ever released. Moving apps anywhere doesn’t work well because it still tries to enforce the grid whenever it can. Editing the action center is super cracked like icons stretching off the screen, overlapping other buttons, buttons just disappear, if you add more than one shortcut to the action center sometimes when you press the button, it will randomly just change that shortcut to be one of the other shortcuts. I tried changing the flashlight and the camera buttons of the lock screen just to see what you can do and my screen kept freezing up while working on it ultimately, I ended up going back to the regular camera and flashlight shortcut just because I’m muscle memoried to those at this point. Well, now, sometimes when I unlock my screen, particularly after changing from one focus to another, the shortcuts keep changing between the different things I had tried out in those spots. Like today, I randomly went to unlock my phone and noticed the flashlight to change back to a shortcut. My camera button has changed back to the alternate camera app. I had switched it to Halide. I have never seen Apple released such an unstable version of iOS. It seems they have been so focused on Apple Intelligence that the quality assurance department isn’t paying attention to some of the other parts were changing.

Eu is openly integrated into the world wide web, creating separate rules for the EU versus elsewhere would likely cost as much money as would be gained. China is basically a LAN within China. Not sure it permeates elsewhere unfortunately.

I think that honestly the only things that seem useful are the notification and mail summaries. The writing tools and genmoji/image stuff looks like something I will rarely use. I have high hopes for the 'orchestration' stuff in Siri coming next year but they've promised a lot with Siri in the past and it's never lived up to those promises so I am not holding out too much hope.

Apple Intelligence should be the bigger software feature of this decade but Apple was too late to the game. Most of these features are in beta or not even in beta. The languages they support are a joke for a global software company. Also, why can Google and Samsung bring their AI software to Europe but not Apple? Everything seems half baked at this point. The iPhone 16 has no real selling point in the EU. They even hide features from the 15 Pro on the comparison page. 15 Pro suddenly can't take 4K Dolby Vision videos anymore...
