Sir Salmon I think palu is top 3 because she is easy to learn and get good numbers (much like wolf before people dropped him) and her mastery cap is extremely high. Also, due to the recent nerfs she had, she won’t be gutted anytime soon, and the nerfs were really not to effective. This is just my opinion though. In my opinion Pikachu is the best, Peach is second and Palutena is third. Not to mention the frostbite tier list showing Palutena and the best character.

She feels less like a very strong character with the occasional unfair option like Bayo or Diddy and more like a giant collection of unfair options attached to a mid-tier character

I'm a person who sits on the edge of being too good for casual play while not good enough to survive competitive. In Brawl I mained Lucas, 99.9% of the time in casual matches. In Smash 4, there were a ton of characters I could play well, but not a single one that outshined the rest. That being said, I'm going to do my best to make Piranha Plant my main. (Also keeping my fingers crossed that Shulk will be good because I love Xenoblade Chronicles 1 so much).

Watching this in late 2019 in anticipation of the 5th DLC fighter, I gotta say that this really did bring back memories. Smash 4 was the first game for which I ever started watching competitive matches, and BOY was that fun. I distinctly remember Zero's Diddy Kong, Abadango's Pac-man, Tsu's Lucario, and, as a Greninja main from day 1 of Smash 4, of course I was watching iStudying's Greninja. Now that we're deep into Ultimate's reign, it's good to look back on this. The new game's balance so far is very healthy, I'd say, and I really, REALLY hope that future DLC characters aren't released as broken as Smash 4's Bayonetta. Sure, Joker may be top tier right now, but he's not an "undisputed" top tier like Bayo was. It's also fun to see how Sakurai's design philosophy has changed, So many 3rd party characters, and they really do show his creativity. Just look at everything about Terry and that becomes obvious. Here's hoping Smash Ultimate stays at a healthy balance and as a fun game to watch for years to come!

@@ivrydice0954 Yeah I'd agree. The very idea of Byleth getting into Smash Ultimate via the final slot of a fighter pass was disappointing already. But then...she just doesn't feel like Sakurai put his all into her. I think a lot more could've been done with the mechanics of Three Houses and how they'd be translated into Smash, but the most that was done was change what weapon Byleth is holding in specific attacks. At least Up Special is pretty unique and wacky, and Neutral Special is satisfying to midair 360 no scope with.

This video was a bloody experience! Entertaining and insightful from start to end. Smash 4 is really an algamation of everything we love and hate in fighting games. Varied and interesting charachters with so much charm and personality in them (mostly) but also balance issues and fair share of problems within the community. However, it inspired so many good content creators who have become main staples in the smash community or just big content creator that in the end, we still owe the game alot for inspiring so many people, depsite its rough edges. Ultimate will be fantastic, but it's a bit sad to say goodbye to smash 4

Link was my main in 64 and 4, secondary in Melee (when my main was Ganondorf), and not even on my radar in Brawl (where I focused on Dedede and Meta Knight). So far it's looking like my main in Ultimate will be Incineroar because he looks so interesting, but I will give every character a chance, except Falcondorf. Despite being my main in Melee I never liked him having Captain Falcon's move set. At least in Melee where he was a last minute addition to the roster it was somewhat justified. By Brawl they should have come up with a proper unique move set. Instead we got a massively depowered version of Melee Ganondorf that apparently spent the time between games skipping every single leg day. Okay, enough ranting let's end this thing on a positive note. OMG Simon and Richter Belmont look like tons of fun to play, Ken looks like a faster Ryu, and K. Rool's FS referencing DK64 is amazing! Also LOL Piranha Plant looks like it'll be a fun character to troll locals with.

This video is absolutely excellent. In the end, I really think Sm4sh was never as bad as people now say it was (Ultimate seems to have "freed" a lot of opinions that sum up to "I've actually never like Sm4sh and it's a horrible game"). Even with 58 characters it is in my opinion by far the most balanced Smash game, and is a lot of fun.

Matanumi, that's moronic. Not only is Project M a fan project that was made for balance unlike any of the 4 actual games, and was developed for way longer WHILE using an already made framework, but it's ALSO for hardcore fans, it doesn't have other options.

Calling it "horrible" is a massive exaggeration. I get that it's not Melee, so those who want Melee will take issues with it that go beyond what makes an enjoyable game (I appreciate the skill required to play Melee at high levels, but for those not willing to learn the muscle memory the game is clunky as hell by comparison). I think it's yet another example of people on the internet (and people in general) not having the capacity to form an opinion beyond hyperbolic black and white salt fuel. It could also be a case trying to move on from it. Ultimate is probably going to be the go to game, and for many that means given up Smash 4 even if they still love it and have thousands of hours in it. Pretending you hate it now might be how people are coping. And it's definitely the most balanced Smash game, especially given the roster as you mentioned. Bayo may have caused a lot of grief, but given how many different characters still regularly make top 8 and grand finals shows that while not perfectly balanced it was going in a better direction of those that came before it. Which makes sense; Smash 4 is the first Smash game to have patches after all (PAL aside).

This video is something I’d expect out of Alax or another big name smash KZbin personality, but this was REALLY well made and a small trip down memory lane. As for character stories? Well I was a Falco main until Bayo came out and abusing divekick 0-deaths was really really fun and balanced, so I switched. Then she got nerfed and everyone said she probably wasn’t even top 10, but I didn’t want to abandon ship like people said I would. So I stuck with her, was a part of all her optimization, and eventually we turned our character into this hated abomination again. But with our hard work that kinda made the Bayos feel like a family.

@@himi6536 What? Not even close to true. Even at the height of Bayo she wasn't nearly as overplayed as Meta Knight, and Bayonetta never had to have any techniques banned. Look at even the last several majors of Smash 4, and you'll see a ridiculous amount of diversity even in top 8. Then look at Brawl, and it's just swarming with Meta Knight at all levels. Meta Knight had at least two techniques that LITERALLY made him invincible the whole game.

Great work on this video! Loved hearing your thoughts on everyone. I played DK a lot in Smash 4 once Ding-Dong became a thing. I was a primarily-Melee player, so Smash 4 tournaments were more of a casual thing for me. DK was just stupid and fun, and I love playing grapplers so he kinda just clicked for me. I pick up Charizard as he was the first character I beat Classic mode on 9.0 with. Then I picked up Bowser and Ike when I realised A. I couldn’t combo to save my life, and B. I did better with characters who could hit harder, rather than hit more often. Bowser is my true main until proven otherwise (*cough* _Ridley_ *cough*).

Saw this video/channel in my recommended list and I'm so happy I clicked! I main Lucina in Smash 4. Since Melee my brothers and I have picked either Roy, Ike, or Marth. Two of us always had to pick the same character though. Therefore, when Lucina came into the picture, I was so excited and immediately attached. I play Dark Pit, Roy, and Luigi. Dark Pit, because I feel like I relate more to the darker, anti-hero vibe of the Kid Icarus franchise. Electroshock is by far my favorite Smash 4 move, because though it is unsafe, it's strong and so satisfying to land to me. Roy, because it hurt seeing how bad he was in Melee, and when he still turned out bad in Smash 4, my "show em up with the underdog" instinct came into play. I turned out to love playing Roy, I enjoy the challenge of the trouble with approaching, and when do happen to land those tricky F-Smashes and D-airs, it feels GOOD. Luigi, simply because I love how relatable Luigi is. He has so much personality, and as you said, playing a Gimmicky Bag-of-Tricks character is fun, and rather hilarious... Though, Luigi's Cyclone frustrates people, and the opportunist I am, I definitely piss people off. LOL

​@Horrible-Artist699 It depends who you ask, but most TO's seemed to lump them in with regular Custom Moves, so they were limited when Custom Moves failed to catch on. There was a lot of talk of Mii's being busted too, specifically tiny thin Brawler with Helicopter Kick or Piston Punch. Mii's get better when they're able to be smaller and faster for sure, and Wii U systems only had middle-size defaults, so I can understand why their size-adjusting mechanic was seen as not worth being legal. Exiting the game just to create Mii's would have been another huge hassle for tournament setups, like with regular Custom Moves. But I still believe that the ban on Mii's special moves was totally uncalled for in that context, since unlike regular Customs, they were all available from a fresh save file, so they already avoided that gigantic hassle. These days, even though most events may have them technically playable with a 1111 moveset, hardly anyone bothers to play them because of how mediocre they are with those moves. In a way, the only competitively relevant Mii's are banned, so Mii's may as well not exist. TL;DR: They were banned by association with anything Custom Moves related and people were sick of Custom Moves.

I'm disappointed that Wii Fit TRAINER's meta started building at pretty much the end of Sm4sh, she was definitely a bit of a better character than everyone made her out to be but nobody brought out the fullest potential she could have had, sure she doesn't have many rewards and doesn't get good results, but she was viable. I'm not saying she could've been some hidden high-tier, I'd say she'd be mid-low tier at best if everyone figured out everything about WFT, and I'm a hardcore Wii Fit MAINER so saying that really does hurt me but I just hope things will be better for her future in Smash Ultimate.

Okay, so... Hear me out. I'm a gamer, always have been, always will be, won't ever stop. There was a point in my life that I gave up on gaming as a whole. All toxicity had taken any multiplayer game's fun away. Overwatch? How dare I main anyone that isn't meta. TF2? If I'm a pyro I'm cancer for using Reserve Degreaser. Every game I had to use a mask, but not here. Not in Smash. As someone who has a birthday late November, I got my hands on the latest Smash edition and was nearly forced to give it a go. Surprisingly, even after a few begrudging days of trying it for the sake of a hopeless wish, Smash Bros 4 reignited my passion for gaming where it'd started to dwindle, and gave me honest hope. This is where I also felt my passion roar again for Street Fighter, and for Ryu. As an Evil Ryu main in SF4 and a Guile main in SF5 (later on when I had my faith restored in gaming), I had fun with all the fun gameplay, but bashed for being a 'tier whore'. Characters that spoke to me weren't just good or easy to play. They had a presence that I lacked in the real world, the only reason I kept to gaming. Ryu rolled along, and he instantly became my main. 28 input combos and a hype that permeates multiple games, I always got a bit of a dopamine high when I could land a true shoryuken. As someone who suffered a lot from various mental afflictions such as crippling anxiety and depression, having that bit of fun, even for a second, could move me to tears. In short - Smash 4's Shiek and Ryu got me out of my social shell and gave me the chance to be myself.

Man, I played lots of smash 4 on launch and a for quite awhile after as well. I mailed just about every character at some point, though I could never grasp Pac Man, ddd, Wario, g&w and a couple other wacky ones. I quit a couple years back once bayonetta really broke through the meta. I just eventually moved on, and now I’m getting into melee again which is cool. Unfortunately, I don’t see myself getting a switch in the near future (WHICH SUCKS BECAUSE ODYSSEY, BofW AND ULTIMATE LOOK AWESOME) but alas that’s the life of a 19 yr old trying to pay for bills lol.

Never saw your videos before, but this was so much fun! Very nostalgic, very well-informed, you covered things exceptionally well. Great job. That said, you asked for stories, so here's mine! The moment I saw the Smash 4 reveal trailer for Charizard, I was hyped that they'd bring back my Brawl Main, Pokemon Trainer (yes, I suffered in Brawl), but was disappointed that my real main of the bunch, Squirtle, had been cut. Then I saw it - GRENINJA. I knew immediately who I'd be playing, no matter what. I labbed with him, struggled to learn him, suffered even more, patch after patch, but I never stopped maining Greninja, and I'm glad I didn't. Playing Greninja is such a mixed bag, because he doesn't have all the tools he wants, but there's so little experience playing against good Greninja players that you absolutely have an edge in many matches just because the opponent has no idea how to play against you or avoid your tricks. I can't wait to see what Ultimate has in store for him, and everyone else!

I have never played Smash Brothers (since I have never owned a Nintendo System) but have played other Platform-Fighters on other consoles/pc. Playstation All-Stars, Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion and Rivals of Aether. I'm eagerly awaiting for Ultimate and have been waiting to get my hands on this series since the Megaman Trailer.

You have such a treat ahead of you. In the meantime, if you're interested in a free fan-made Smash Bros for PC I'd recommend checking out Super Smash Flash 2. While it's not a real Smash and has several guest appearances that'll never make it into a real Smash like Naruto and Ichigo, it'll help you learn a bit of how the mechanics work since the gameplay is more or less the same. Alternatively you could emulate one of the older titles but if you're waiting on Ultimate I assume you'd prefer to just wait on that.

I remember being quite young and playing the first Super Smash Flash, remembering it was the best thing ever, however I was young and playing that and then its sequel is a strange yet gratifying transition. Thank you for the recommendation. Additionally, while I never got my hands on the previous games that's technically a lie, as I emulated the first Super Smash Brothers, but looking at just the characters from Nintendo 64 to Switch is a clear indication of the evolution. Also I played on Keyboard, which felt strange among a slew of other problem.

MockRock Ridley is a constantly resurrecting as well. Every time he dies he come back stronger and he doesn’t need dark power to do that. Lore wise I think Gannon relies to heavily on his dark powers which is almost always countered by a special kind of weapon like the master sword or light arrows, with Ridley there is no special item to take him down, he brute forces through everything and relies on close combat mainly which is a bit more respectable imo. Plus I mean, giant space laser shooting cyborg murder dragon sounds a bit cooler than dark lord of evil

I could feel tears forming in my eyes at the end of this. After being told constantly that my character absolutely ruined the game and that I'm not fun to play with and I'm not a good person or a good friend for playing her etc. etc. hearing someone especially in a retrospective video like this defend her (and Cloud too!) felt really nice. What especially resonated with me was the whole "if you actively bullied a teenager over a character in a video game, leave and don't come back." I actually burnt out on Smash 4 because I was so dragged down by the community at large that I felt as if my accomplishments weren't my own, and that my practice meant nothing because my wins were from maining the most broken character in the game, and it hurt me. It really made me question my confidence and my pride. I'm one of my scene's top players but I don't feel like I even DESERVE it because so many people have told me, and players like me, that we don't. Hopefully Ultimate comes around and people complain less because I want to stick with her so bad (I love her moveset and I love her games!) but if all this drama continues to get thrown around IDK if I can handle it. I might just burn out again.

Just found this vid and your channel out of nowhere. But you did an amazing job and earned my sub for sure. I've played smash 4 since early brawl as a young kid. It's always been the favorite game of my friend group and we made a club in highschool to play it for hours on end after school on fridays. My love for the game and competition in general led me to rise to the top among my friends quickly. But as I'm sure many of you all know, winning easily is boring. So as soon as i had mastered a character well enough to beat my friends, my interest would die, and I'd move on to the next one. As we near ultimate, I'm scraping thr bottom of the bucket, having to use characters like duck hunt and pit to keep games interesting. Needless to say I'm so happy that the playing field will be leveled and I'm optimistic that some of them will play as much as me and make it harder on me to win. And if not then I'll have plenty of characters to go through and learn 1 by 1 before I get too bored of the game

Lucas isn't a crazy good character because 1. His footstool combos only work on a few stages and are very hard to pull off consistently 2. His neutral is extremely linear, completely relying on jumping back & either zairing or pk firing. His arials are all crap in neutral except maybe fair which is passable at best 3. Outside of his grab, his kill game is quite poor as he has no neutral tool that kills incredibly early, nor a setup for his kill move aside from grab 4. You can SDI nair fairly easily which heavily nerfs his combo game, from being absolutely ridiculous to just fairly good He has no fatal flaw like Ness might have in his range and recovery, but he has many smaller flaws within his moveset as well as overrated strengths that end up him being mid tier and worse than Ness in my opinion. Ness might not have a worse recovery, but Ness has more options and room for mixups in neutral, has an arguably stronger, more consistent punish game, among the best kill power in the game, and superior ledge trapping because of downsmash.
