I went with engine back exhaust (headers, front pipe, cbe, and tune) and found that that + performance tires was really all the car needed. The gains didn't change the character of the vehicle power deliver at all but made it feel much more alive. I was very happy I stayed NA.
@bustermcthundernut2 жыл бұрын
What was the cost for all of that when it’s all said and done? I’m thinking about doing that too because I don’t want to mess with forced induction.
@SirBrass2 жыл бұрын
@@bustermcthundernut headers was about $700 (I bought second hand, as the original owner barely used them before going to ELHs), the front pipe was around $600, and I think the Q300 cbe was around $700. I got the ecutek software at cost and essentially got free tuning from the tuner to be his guinea pig in his effort to improve the tune on a completely stock BRZ. So, tune came first, then exhaust, and my tuner updated the tune to adapt. We had a Dropbox set up where my logs would get dropped and he'd in turn drop updated tunes to me the same way. I'd expect for you to just pay for a road tuned pro tune from a reputable tuner. And exhaust in total without tune was around $2k. Really improved the pep and torque response. Torque dip definitely was mitigated, and I think we got a very respectable WHp power boost.

Depends on where the power band is, if the supercharger gives more power in the upper rev range and is peaky then you can't make full use of that 300 horses (adjust for air density in the mountains) That Header and tune has shown to make more gains in the lower rev range. In the mountains and on the twisties, you aren't always up in the upper rev ranges but you are enjoying life in the mid rev range as you have to brake and then rev it out again. The feel can be similar if this is the application.

maybe he didn't wanted to overboost the car because he was on stock internals. that supercharger might be able to make +100, he's just not letting it for the fear of breaking the engine. also a centrifugal supercharger gives you more boost at higher rpm, it barely does anything down low. mighty car mods shown the difference between turbo and a centrifugal supercharger. i think id rather go tune and header too for money and fuel consumption reasons.
@SteelyEyedMissileDan7 жыл бұрын
cerberus65 The "peak numbers" game is a rough one. I'd take a broad +40hp over a peaky +100hp. It's one of my biggest pet peeves when guys on KZbin throw nineteen 100mm turbos on an RX8 and get wild about making 1200hp at 10,000rpm. Behind the scenes they should include that the compressors didn't actually spool up until 9,999rpm and that poor rotary engine melted onto the dyno platform two seconds later.

I don't agree with Todd's assessment. I was previously tracking an 86 (moved on to another car since). I was bitten by the mod bug. Of all the mods I did (AP Racing brakes, coilovers, exhaust, tune, supercharger, cooling, etc.), the exhaust/tune was the most disappointing. For the cost, it just wasn't enough hp. Once I moved to a supercharger, it was noticeably quicker. To me, the cost was worth it because I could actually feel a huge gain. Exhaust only...no way. Todd is too enamored by his 86, and is trying to justify his decision...which I understand. Paul is dead on right in this video. Paul, in my opinion, is the unbiased one here (since he doesn't own one of the cars) and it's obvious he could tell a huge difference. Either way, great videos guys. Really enjoy them.
@shadow1057207 жыл бұрын
ZE the high end is not where an exhaust comes in. Look at the low end stock VS exhaust. The huge drop you have stock is gone, surely that makes a huge difference in driving but just the chart doesn't show it. Yes you'll feel a supercharger way more but an exhaust is way different.

He was saying what he was saying about the SC car because that car was tuned by, apparently, a 5 year old. (Or the owner wanted a $5000+ investment into his FR-S for 35 or so HP.) Who does that? If any FI kit was boasting 35-40hp for $5000 they would never sell them. I understand not wanting to pop your engine, but Jesus H Christ 'Igor' live a little! I would happily have Todd's car and $3,500 over Igor's, as it sits.

I have a 2013 fr-s open flash unequal length headers all exhaust changed over no cats. So basically straight piped with magnaflow muffler. Also added injen intake , pulley kit to lighten up initial mass and Open flash tablet tuned. These made a huge difference to the car. My sister has a stock brz with just a cat back exhaust and no where near the power. I have never wanted or thought it needed a super charger. I have changed tires (as big as will fit with stock wheels) and this set up pushes those to the edge. I love the set up and wouldn't change it. The tune completely gets rid of torque dip and raises redline 500rpm. The car builds power from 3,000 rpm and doesn't drop till redline. When toyota was asked about why they never forced inducted this car their response was the platform was not built for that much power. They claim they would have to start over from scratch. They did and its called a supra. This car is about light, decent power, close gearing and extreme handling at an amazing price. If you have never driven one up a canyon to enjoyed the cornering and ease of drifting you wont understand this car. If you want to race stop lights go ahead get a hell cat and have fun but don't confuse the two cars.

So, the 86's 2.0L makes 200hp stock. That's a hundred horses per liter meaning it's already highly strung and works very hard for those 200 ponies.. It doesn't have a lot left to offer in terms of making more horses without forced induction. People compare the car to higher end sport cars with much more power but for a 2.0L 4 cylinder car, the engine is strong and deemed powerful. And that is the reason the tune, headers and exhaust seems like a waste of money to a lot of you viewers. It's because after spending 2.5k u only get 7hp increase which seems like a puny amount and it is for the money. But what most of you guys don't think about is the changed driving dynamics of the car. The throstle response, the power build up and the torque curve. Unless you drive a stock 86 and then drive the tuned one to feel the difference your self, you'd never understand spending 2.5k for 7hp. There's a lot more to it then just 7hp. I have a 2012 Mazda 3 with a N/A 2.0l and I've taken similar steps with the tuned 86 featured here. I've put performance headers, a cold air intake, and a tune. Had the loudest exhaust 2 inch exhaust but got in troubles with the law so I took it off. The difference I feel is other worldly. And because my engine makes 150 horses only stock, it had considerable amount more to offer. Now, I haven't dynoed my car but I'm asuming it is pushing 20-30 horses more. People with just a short ram intake and a tune (without the header) have dynoed the same tune on the same car and are getting from 167~173hp. That's like 2.5L power from a 2.0L.
@fatboy198317 жыл бұрын
Not true. The Stock header hold back around 8 to 10 hp. The cars are still tuned for economy. None of these tuns add to ton of peak hp. Not even the SC kits. With the right tune and header you can get a 30% increase in power and torque at 4000 rpm. The week point of the stock car. Running E85 and the Open flash makes the FRS run like an S2k.
@Van_frederick7 жыл бұрын
so what youre saying is after you do all that, it reaches to a stock s2000
@OfficialMINIm7 жыл бұрын
fatboy19831 I used to sell new toyotas for a living. The fa20 engine doesn't have a whole lot more to offer when it comes down to outright power without going forced induction OR forged internals with bigger pistols and cams and all of that. I don't know if you're speaking from experience, but for an engine that doesn't rev upto like 9000rpm, 200 ponies from a 2.0L is pretty strung up already. The engine in the stock form doesn't have a tone of power to give left. Like I mentioned, throttle response and torque curve can be tweaked thus improving driving dynamics but you can't just magically make it pump another 50 horse powers. Let's get real here. These guys are dyno'ing the cars for results and comparisons. And have used exhaust, tune and headers from well known and trusted companies. So if you're right, I guess you must be doing something magically better. Also, cars like these are ideal fun to drive but daily/city/livable. Most people won't do an e85 conversion so let's not even go there. Yes they're good track toys and have loads of potential, but we are not on that page with this video so it's irrelevant

Jaheel, The S2k competes with the Boxster, 300ZX, and Supra. It is a wash to those cars. The RSX or the Prelude are more in line with the BRZ/86. A BRZ running these mods and E85 is FASTER than a stock s2k in anything other than a balls out screaming drag race. The s2k is a dedicated 2 seat sports car that FAILED in the market place. Guys, i'm watching this again for fun, and I agree with everything you said (shocker). BUT what i'm most shocked about is that the Jackson Racing supercharger setup only pulled +/-200hp. Most of those are supposed to be closer to 250-65 or so... I"m curious to the tune he had on that thing. Wondering if it was installed and not actually retuned - so the MAF is tossing fuel at it, but it really isn't optimized. The OFT bump is a bit low- but the elevation plays a part, I get it - but that shouldn't matter quite as much for the other car, and even if it did that still wouldn't lop off 50-60hp. Something seems fishy. I bet that white car has a lot of power hiding somewhere.

OK, I'm the guy who asked about fuel mileage when you installed the catted UEL header. I also asked if the catback, overpipe, etc. were needed to produce power or just for the "extra noise". I haven't done the UEL yet, but when I saw this I had to purchase an OFT and try the stage one tune. I just installed it today. The OBDII connector can fool you into believing that it is connected when it really isn't but once fully inserted the install went exactly as in the instruction videos. After letting it idle a minute I took my BRZ on a lap of my "local nordschleife" just to put a few miles on the ECU. I was planning a leisurely drive but almost as soon as I got on an open road a Civic appeared behind me, chomping on my rear. Why is it that EVERY Civic driver has to try to race FT-86's? Is it because they've been told that even a Chrysler minivan can beat the woefully under powered FT-86? I had to floor it. As I've read in numerous reports, the stage one tune causes nothing spectacular to happen at low rpm. Acceleration under 3000 rpm is still underwhelming, the torque dip still is there, but, oh, it's shallower and ends sooner and the torque stays instead of trailing off. The FA-20 was noticeably louder, raspier, and it had more Oomph from 3600 rpm up to redline. The Civic couldn't keep up. When I got home I pulled the 12v plug from the glove box and plugged the sound port in the foot well to keep the dB's in check. Yes, it's still a BRZ and even when the UEL arrives it will still just be a BRZ, but it will be closer to its potential.

For us, in Utah, there's 1 station that offers E85, and it's more than 50 miles away. In cases like that E85 just isn't a viable option. We aren't going to be stockpiling or driving that far out of the way. If it was more common, we'd do that next.

I currently have a stock frs and am very pleased with it. I have considered putting a new exhaust on it but can't make up my mind. I like that the car is not loud and obnoxious. Whatever exhaust I choose I want it to stay remotely close to that. Meaning, when I pull into work, I don't want to seem like an ass hole with a loud car, but I do want some performance increase. That being said, I direct these questions to Todd. Was it worth the money for the exhaust, header and tune? Are you satisfied with the results? Should I look for less expensive alternative exhaust parts or would you recommend your setup for me based on my feelings above? Also keep in mind that I came from a 2000 Toyota echo to this about a year ago and don't plan on doing much to this car. If you decide to respond one way or another, thank you very much.

For 5k-6k you can get a turbo kit that wil give you 270-300hp on the wheels. Go check the options on the cars. There is a lot of good aftermarket kits for the cars.

Your car feels "flatter" than a lowered car? I suppose his spring/shock or coilover setup is pretty poor! A supercharger has doubled they gains you've made with bolt-ons but still your're not impressed. I suppose its hp per $$, that you mean. Ya, you said as much. If it were mine, I put a turbo kit on that car. It would cost less and make much more power. The sacrifice would be linearity. All that said, I'm glad you acknowledge modding is something useful and a way of making your car "yours". This as opposed to what @everyday driver usually says, buy a better car instead of modding.

+EverydayDriver Was the dyno performed at altitude? What type of fuel was used? I'm no tuner, but I'm pretty sure a car needs higher octane at higher altitude, especially with forced induction applications. And I am curious if the car was avoiding knock by retarding the timing resulting in less power. The base kit makes like 260+ whp and around 200 tq, not 200 whp and 175 tq. Something isn't right with your comparison. Also, that might be the stock pulley on a relatively basic tune like the CARB tune. I'm sure if it was on Delicious Tuning's tune there would be more power, and add E85 and most have around 300-320whp.
@Broadpaw_Fox7 жыл бұрын
Actually, at higher altitudes cars need less octane. That said, if you want to go through getting it properly tuned, you can make good use of the octane anywhere, high altitude or low. But the basic physics of it is still that octane requirements go down with altitude.

@drakezv7 жыл бұрын
From what I've seen there are OTS tunes from the companies that sell the SC for the car, so it is tuned but not a custom tune for max benefit.
@bubbie19837 жыл бұрын
Kobi Jenkins I realize cars should be tuned but it doesn't mean they always are. People have been turbocharging/supercharging cars without real dyno tuning for years...doesn't mean it's optimal but they do it.
@bubbie19837 жыл бұрын
Drake zv Yeah I figured it might have an OTS tune, but probably not a custom dyno tune. Probably why it's performing so poorly at that altitude. Most OTS tunes are optimized for sea level, not 8k feet in altitude.
@drakezv7 жыл бұрын
Yeah i looked at the JRSC official numbers on their website for their frs/brz kit and it says 282whp and 216wtq with their 91 octane CA CARB legal tune with stock header and exhaust. that's almost 100 HP over stock and 66wtq over stock. I'm sure with full exhaust and a custom tune you could 300+whp and around 250wtq which is VERY significant over stock, nearly double the power on CA's shitty 91. With E85 350whp and 300wtq are probable and pretty solid numbers for a SC car. It's just once you get to those levels you would need to replace a lot of other things such as axles and clutch.

I'm too lazy to look at all the comments, but what about adding an E85 tune? If you can get E85, that seems like a super easy way to get a 30+HP bump on this car.
