Very impressive! I'm sure that 99% of the ppl who are going to buy this CR-V are never going to put it through half of what you did but it's sure cool to know that it could do that. I applaud you for testing off road limits of everyday cars, very interesting to watch. Keep up the good work!

Oh my goodness....new 2015 Honda CRV owner here and watched your videos. Hubs says 'I know where this ORV place is!' Wow, cool to find out you are local! Sadly, though, my new CRV is one with the idle vibration issue. Ah well, c'est la vie. CdA Honda is going to do a software upgrade and at least I'll have the issue registered. Thanks for all the amazing videos and info you provide!

Thank you for testing it like this! We are looking into getting a CR-V. We have to drive on a dirt road every day and parts of it is very steep..look up gore range/insperation point in CO and that is what we drive every day. Insperation point has about a 1,000 ft drop from the road and only a guard rail between you and said drop off. Definitely need God, good vehicle, and good tires.

Good vid. Looks like a good vehicle. I've had 2 CRVs in the past, great cars. Just as a suggestion, I know these vehicles do not have the off road capability of a Lamd Rover/ Ramge Rover/ Land Cruiser/ Jeep etc. but on the inclines, when you feel Ya gonna lose traction on the front wheels, vigorously move the steering wheel left and right and I am sure you would have climbed all the of these hills in the video.....just a thought!

So it just does not want to engage the rear wheels when the going gets tough? Not sure why they call it AWD then. I guess the fact that the car is very hard to be pushed to slide and constantly tries to pull outside is another confirmation that the AWD label is mostly for show.

It does, but the AWD system uses open differentials instead of limited slip or lockable diffs. This is why only the right or left rear wheel will spin, but both do not always engage. It is just how open differentials work.

It did very well for what it is. On demand AWD systems use open differentials instead of lockable or limited slip differentials -- this is why only one rear wheel may be spinning at times, while the other is not. Depending on the situation, you can see the right rear spin or the left rear spin, but it all depends. Trying with or without VSA would be interesting. Also, on demand systems work best when you are going straight and give it a lot of throttle (more balanced torque distribution).

Hi all from Spain! I have and 2003 HRV and I think it has the same AWD system de 2015 CRV has, I mean, a mecanichal -not electronic- dual pump system that engages rear traction when front wheels spin faster than rears. Am I right? Reading people's comments, I must say these cars are not for all-road driving, just for small track adventures or having some fun, but no more than this. I love mine's and waiting for the new HRV to be comercialized in Europe. Nice test and review and good driving also.

My wife has a 2014 Mazda CX-5 and IMO the all wheel drive system is far superior. Watch some off-road / snow videos of the CX-5 you'll see the back wheels spinning like crazy. The Honda's should be called 2 wheel drive plus. Now I've warned my wife that the tail can get happy under power in the snow on the CX-5 so don't get too throttle happy. I love it, but she is a bit more of a timid and more inexperienced driver so I can see how Honda wanted to eliminate this since the primary drivers of the CR-V are most likely female but it sort of defeats the purpose of the system to some extent. Plus the CX-5 has something like an 1.5" more of ground clearance. We have the Grand Touring, and about the only thing I would swap for snow / off road driving are the tires as they are more GT type tires and the Honda appears to have better mud / snow tires from the factory.
@28cjohns

CX - 5 looks great. We bought a the Touring CRV though and then blinged it up with literally every accessory we could get. The technology package is far superior, in the Honda. Space is far superior, size wise too. If the CX-5 could have had similar things though, we would have bought it. Both good vehicles and values, they are great 2nd cars for sure.

Sir I have a couple of questions regarding the CR-V because I also have one (2013 production which is autoamatic (with paddle shift) and AWD firmare upgrade installed). 1. Did you have Econ mode turned off when doing off road test?? With Econ mode off there is more torque. 2. Did you engage VSA off when driving uphill especially at 2:28? The rear wheels failed to spin. Maybe with VSA off, the CR-V would have better chances. VSA off gives more torque to the rear wheels though we are loosing the automatic limited slip differential individual wheel brake action.3. Is this vehicle automatic or manual transmission?? 4. If it is automatic did you try driving uphill with the sport mode turned on? I observed that there is more torque with sport mode too. I think that the CR-V rear differentials need a better AWD ECU firmware in order to take into account the hill climb snow terrain profile which Honda did not add to its simulation computer software as the worst case scenario. The Clutch type rear differentials are programmable and should be reprogrammed to take into account the steep hill climb snow profile where the front wheels loose grip and the rear differentials should be able to output to the rear wheels 100% of the torque. Failing to do so the CR-V AWD will never be accepted as an off road AWD system. Mitsubishi Oultander does this nicely. Sir do we have the privelage to see on the same hills the Toyora RAV4?? and or on the contrary I would like to see the CR-V on the same Mazda CX5 off road tests you have done. Would be nice to test the same hill climb where Mazda CX5 failed. Thanks

after all these years, I just don't understand why Honda would not add a AWD lock feature on the CR-V. In this video, I saw a number of times where the front wheels were spinning but the rear wheels still weren't engaged. Puzzling. I've driven an older model of the CR-V before and I've noticed that the rear wheels only kick in when the car is motion. So if you are accelerating from a full stop and the wheels are spinning, the AWD is useless.

yea I actually drove my friends CRV off road (got lost actually) and it seems when full stop and you try to gas it...the AWD indicates that it overheated.....we were like wtf? I think they should just put a 4WD systems on it instead of its weak AWD.

mana1111 I do see your point in mentioned that honda should put a lock on its awd system for the crv, but then i got to wondering.. whats the demographics for this Small suv in the first place? and what is most of them used for..?. then i wondered if honda added this lock feature.. how much if any would it affect the over all price of the vehicle? and if it did add a higher price point, would it then push people to honda's competition ? or if they made it a option would it only be a option on their highest tier then causing most people to not get it anyways...? just a thought..
@abaj006
@abaj006 9 жыл бұрын
I think the CRV already has a similar system. It applies the brake on the wheel which is spinning freely so that the power is transferred to the wheel with traction through the open diff. When you see wheel spin, it is the car's computer releasing the break and checking again if the wheel has regained traction. You can see this many times throughout the video where the wheel which is in the air spins, then locks, then spins again. This effectively transfers intermittent power to the wheel with traction. That is why the CRV does well in real world off road driving tests.
@b3fiend
@b3fiend 9 жыл бұрын
mana1111 Actually, you read that misinformation story off that video where those Swedish dorks put it on rollers to force that overheating safety shutdown - and that was a 2014. It is not a realistic test to have zero resistance when starting a car on a hill. it was thoroughly debunked. Now stop making up stories.
@mana1111
@mana1111 9 жыл бұрын
JJAM no, please read my comment. I drove my friend's CRV and it indicated that it overheated without even doing anything. Also the 2015 is exactly the same system only the body changed. Another thing, other cars can perfectly keep spinning without overheating shows the lack of a good system Honda has. The only one I like from Honda is the Pilot with its 4WD system and maybe the crosstour, but I never test drove that one.

Turn off traction control to get up the hills
@panayiotispalmiris1750
@panayiotispalmiris1750 9 жыл бұрын
dusty179 If VSA traction control is turned off then there is no automatic limited slip differential thus no brake force is applied to the wheel that is loosing grip in order to transfer the torque to the opposite axle wheel. This will give reverse results. The owners manual suggests turning VSA off only in stall situations. One of the problems is the ECONOMY mode which should be turned off when doing off road tests since the acceleration pedal is limiting engine revolution thus torque produced.

Why do a AWD car test in snow and ice with summer tires??? No way this car have proper winter tires. At most MAYBE some lousy "all season" tires. Summer tires on snow and ice looks totally idiotic every time. Just see all the "winter disaster" videos here on youtube (mostly from US), where its chaos just from some cm's of snow? Driving on winter roads is NO problem with real winter tires only with summer tires.

As shown in the AWD test videos, the AWD system in the CR-V is not made for AWD and it overheats easily after a minute or two therefore rendering it useless unless you use it for city driving.
