Here's a tip to keep the dishes from piling up. Just have one or two dinner plates, forks, spoons, knives, etc. Put the rest away. Whenever you eat, wash your one dish and knife, fork and spoon as soon as you finish eating. Takes about 30 seconds, your dishes never pile up, and they are always clean.

Great advice. My wife passed almost 2 years ago. Being by myself is not something I enjoy. Some say they like the peace they have. I had an opposite situation several days ago. I got a call from my 11 years old granddaughter's school. They couldn't reach her Mom so they called me. I was having a bad day dealing with my loneliness and cancer situation. My granddaughter was screaming her teeth hurt and was at the nurses office. I rushed to the school and took her to the dentist for a loose tooth. Thus my day was turned upside down. Yet it was great to spend the afternoon with my granddaughter and have lunch with her. It made me feel I was useful and can help when needed.

Clearly you are not doing the right things for your health. Where do you think cancer comes from? It comes mainly from your diet (except certain types of cancer such as lung cancer). This means they are mostly due to people's own lifestyle choices. Loneliness is also a choice, an emotional addiction to people that you refuse to see for what it is and dump it. Try developing a life philosophy like stoicism. You can't control everything. The things you can't control you must discard because they waste your energy. Focus only on the things you can control, your diet, exercise, etc. This approach can only improve your experience to some degree.

I turn 60 in December of this year. Was married for 22. Divorced 12 years ago. Initially was lonely. Dated for a couple of years just after the divorce. Most of the women I dated wanted a checkbook, a safety net, or were controlling or damaged. While I would still enjoy having someone to be with, it’s simply not worth going through the process. I work, go to the gym, and have family nearby. The only worry I have is being injured at my home. The upside is that I can do whatever I want and my whole house is my “man cave”. The downside is that I don’t have someone with which to share new experiences. We’ll see how I feel in another ten years.

I agree that it's good to have a friend or friends to check on you. You have to learn how to manage your life whether you're alone or not. Life wasn't meant to be perfect. I was in an unhappy marriage for over 25 years, and am totally happy now. I make sure that I have a certain amount of social contact with people. I make time for moderate exercise, reading, as well other activities to keep my mind sharp. Whatever your situation, you have to make a plan that fits you and establish a routine so you can have structure. And make a conscious decision to be happy no matter what your situation. One thing I have definitely decided not to do is move to a foreign country like the Philippines or any other country as at my senior age. I allowed myself to have that fantasy for awhile but after watching expat videos, I have decided it is just not a sound idea for me. Thanks for sharing this valuable advise Mark.

I do things at my own pace, and the quiet and peaceful days have restored my nervous system. If I die alone, no problem. No one dies alone. You will see how this is true. Another thing is having to be in the hospital for something, and not having anyone around. Back in August I tried to get approval to see a cardiologist. I just received a denial letter at the end of September. At least the illegal aliens and non-veterans are cared for. A number of years ago, a spine doctor asked me how I was feeling at my follow-up appointment. I told him I hadn’t been approved for physical therapy (it had been 7 weeks since my first appointment). I can't drive anymore because of my loss of field of vision resulting from the strokes. When she left, she took most of the stress in my life with her. I am enjoying my peace for the moment but I recognize that I will not be able to manage many of the things I am doing now as well in 5-10 years assuming I live that long. I am living with intent. I recently experienced an injury to my foot and had to stay off of it and that brought my daily walks to a halt almost two months ago now. It is feeling better but not quite ready to sustain those 90 minute walks. I have taken up the hobby of firearms and target shooting self defense and accessories etc. Lots to learn and the training helps my fitness and mental acuity. It affords some social interactions as well at the ranges meeting other gun folks.

I have a ton of hobbies and interests that had fallen by the wayside and my interests in them returned. It was more of an adjustment going back to work and to a routine that I have to endure for the next year and a half. One way to stop time feeing like it moves too quickly is to do different things. Falling into a very strict routine for the sake of 'efficiency' really makes time feel like it speeds up. Do things out of the ordinary. Going somewhere you've never been to makes the journey feel long, whereas the way back seems shorter and if you start do it several times (like a commute) the route becomes over-familiar and so 'short'.

They gave me laughing gas and the pain went away and I was able to get myself onto the gurney, I had an x-ray and was cleared of any severe back problem. Lesson learned, if back pain returns, set up precautions, take strong pain killer if needed before bed. Keep pain killers, water, walking canes, phones near bed just in case. If I had been alone that morning, I would have laid on the floor for many hours unable to get up.
