Here's a tip to keep the dishes from piling up. Just have one or two dinner plates, forks, spoons, knives, etc. Put the rest away. Whenever you eat, wash your one dish and knife, fork and spoon as soon as you finish eating. Takes about 30 seconds, your dishes never pile up, and they are always clean.

Great advice. My wife passed almost 2 years ago. Being by myself is not something I enjoy. Some say they like the peace they have. I had an opposite situation several days ago. I got a call from my 11 years old granddaughter's school. They couldn't reach her Mom so they called me. I was having a bad day dealing with my loneliness and cancer situation. My granddaughter was screaming her teeth hurt and was at the nurses office. I rushed to the school and took her to the dentist for a loose tooth. Thus my day was turned upside down. Yet it was great to spend the afternoon with my granddaughter and have lunch with her. It made me feel I was useful and can help when needed.

Clearly you are not doing the right things for your health. Where do you think cancer comes from? It comes mainly from your diet (except certain types of cancer such as lung cancer). This means they are mostly due to people's own lifestyle choices. Loneliness is also a choice, an emotional addiction to people that you refuse to see for what it is and dump it. Try developing a life philosophy like stoicism. You can't control everything. The things you can't control you must discard because they waste your energy. Focus only on the things you can control, your diet, exercise, etc. This approach can only improve your experience to some degree.

I resolved this problem. I have no family, they’ve all passed away. I certainly don’t care to remarry. I moved to a poorer country so I could afford to live off my social security. After a few years of getting to know the locals I made a deal with a young man and his wife, that I get to live with them until I die. They take care of me and when I’m dead, they inherit what I have, which is considerable in their country. Any day now we will have a new baby in the house. Never had children, so I’m really looking forward to being “a grandmother” and teaching the baby English. I feel like I’ve got new purpose in life.

I turn 60 in December of this year. Was married for 22. Divorced 12 years ago. Initially was lonely. Dated for a couple of years just after the divorce. Most of the women I dated wanted a checkbook, a safety net, or were controlling or damaged. While I would still enjoy having someone to be with, it’s simply not worth going through the process. I work, go to the gym, and have family nearby. The only worry I have is being injured at my home. The upside is that I can do whatever I want and my whole house is my “man cave”. The downside is that I don’t have someone with which to share new experiences. We’ll see how I feel in another ten years.

The one simple thing as a whistle can be life saving in any situation at any age. I’ve been touting this for years. It’s louder and carries farther than your voice and doesn’t require a lot of effort to signal someone. I use one set of dishes and clean them after eating. When I’m lazy, I use paper plates and plastic utensils. Use once and done. My neighbor has a key to get into my house in an emergency. Great advice that a lot of seniors never think about until it’s too late.

Same. I'm in my mid 60s and all my friends retired. I am working part time for the social interaction because all my family are dead. William Holden was 63 when he died. He was at home having a drink alone, he fell or tripped, he hit his head on the coffee table, he managed to sit in a chair next to the phone and bled to death there. These things can happen to anyone at any time, is all about taking PRECAUTIONS. I am sixty now and I have a routine, one of the really BIG things I know was hurting me, was DRINKING. It messed with my cognitive health. Not to mention, damage to my liver, the danger of falling. It was KILLING me very slowly. I stopped drinking twelve years ago and I'm healthier now than I was in my forties. If I had to advise anyone anything is to STOP DRINKING. Believe me is not part of your personality is just a crutch we use to deal with other feelings and if you think about it we had to learn that as well.

I agree that it's good to have a friend or friends to check on you. You have to learn how to manage your life whether you're alone or not. Life wasn't meant to be perfect. I was in an unhappy marriage for over 25 years, and am totally happy now. I make sure that I have a certain amount of social contact with people. I make time for moderate exercise, reading, as well other activities to keep my mind sharp. Whatever your situation, you have to make a plan that fits you and establish a routine so you can have structure. And make a conscious decision to be happy no matter what your situation. One thing I have definitely decided not to do is move to a foreign country like the Philippines or any other country as at my senior age. I allowed myself to have that fantasy for awhile but after watching expat videos, I have decided it is just not a sound idea for me. Thanks for sharing this valuable advise Mark.

Myself, I never knew how much I craved time alone and how awful it was to never have silence when I was married to the extrovert covert narcissist who loved to provoke me. Now I spend my days in the company of 3 dogs, 9 cats, and have my garden. I never knew how good I sleep by not having anyone on my bed. Been celibate and hermit for 7 years. This lifestyle fits me. I do things at my own pace, and the quiet and peaceful days have restored my nervous system. If I die alone, no problem. No one dies alone. You will see how this is true. Don't worry, relax, enjoy life. Pursue hobbies. DO take care of yourself, cook at home, be clean. You deserve it.

Lotta truth here. Especially about emergencies and nobody else around. I “do” keep my phone with me at all times while in my home. Another thing is having to be in the hospital for something, and not having anyone around. I know for a fact I was treated differently, because no one was there to fight for me, or know how I’m being treated. My lesson there was to tell someone I’m in the hospital, and get them to visit. That last line… Amen! I am in the community care program through the VA “health care” system. I can’t seem to get referrals to specialists. It takes over a year to get approval - 14 months to see a podiatrist. I gave up on seeing a neurologist back in May after trying since January. Back in August I tried to get approval to see a cardiologist. I just received a denial letter at the end of September. At least the illegal aliens and non-veterans are cared for. A number of years ago, a spine doctor asked me how I was feeling at my follow-up appointment. I told him I hadn’t been approved for physical therapy (it had been 7 weeks since my first appointment). Good stuff. I am 50. I can't drive anymore because of my loss of field of vision resulting from the strokes. When she left, she took most of the stress in my life with her. I am enjoying my peace for the moment but I recognize that I will not be able to manage many of the things I am doing now as well in 5-10 years assuming I live that long. I am living with intent. I recently experienced an injury to my foot and had to stay off of it and that brought my daily walks to a halt almost two months ago now. It is feeling better but not quite ready to sustain those 90 minute walks. I have taken up the hobby of firearms and target shooting self defense and accessories etc. Lots to learn and the training helps my fitness and mental acuity. It affords some social interactions as well at the ranges meeting other gun folks.

I felt without purpose not having a work routine for about two weeks. Afte that, I began to organically develop new routines to make my days fulfilling. I have a ton of hobbies and interests that had fallen by the wayside and my interests in them returned. It was more of an adjustment going back to work and to a routine that I have to endure for the next year and a half. You have to take care of your physical well being as you get older. Continue to work out with weights and do stretches regularly for quality of life! And nutrition is key also!

At 54, I lifted weights for 36 years. Recently put them down. Now it’s resistance bands, body weight lunges and a morning meditation of lymphatic drainage, basic yoga poses & Tai Chi.

I am so glad KZbin recommended this video. There it was and your words rang so true. These are the issues I have been dealing with since retiring two years ago. Just turned 70. Hearing you put my thoughts into words.are a sign. I need to stay on track, be aware and be smart about decisions about aging. Thank you very much

Great points and well presented Mark. As you said when you live alone you’re your own emergency back up. The freedom of living alone can be a good feeling. However as we get older and that one time emergency and not having someone around can be the difference in life & death. Thanks for sharing a great conversation 👍🏾👏🏾!

If you lived with somebody, they could kill you in your sleep. And, not report your death to keep collecting your SS checks. Is that what you would rather have?

What is the difference between life and death ? Is one good and the other bad ? I don't understand why I should fear one and not the other. I've been resting in peace all my life and don't see any reason why that will change.

One way to stop time feeing like it moves too quickly is to do different things. Falling into a very strict routine for the sake of 'efficiency' really makes time feel like it speeds up. Do things out of the ordinary. Going somewhere you've never been to makes the journey feel long, whereas the way back seems shorter and if you start do it several times (like a commute) the route becomes over-familiar and so 'short'.

Excellent points With back pain I ended up on the floor unable to find a way to get up. Luckily family members were there but still had to call the emergency services for a paramedic. They gave me laughing gas and the pain went away and I was able to get myself onto the gurney, I had an x-ray and was cleared of any severe back problem. Lesson learned, if back pain returns, set up precautions, take strong pain killer if needed before bed. Keep pain killers, water, walking canes, phones near bed just in case. If I had been alone that morning, I would have laid on the floor for many hours unable to get up.

My biggest concern isn't about myself, it's about my wife should I pass away before she does. I've been showing her how to do things like pay the bills, maintenance of our appliances, and other things that I do. Some things she won't be able to do like clean the outside of our house and cut the grass.

Excellent info and ideas. Loneliness is huge. I accepted a part time job 2 days per week as a lifeguard. I get to meet people and talk to them. I get out of the house at least 5 days per week to be around others. I joined a church, but it's terribly impersonal. The YMCA has camaraderie. I wear an alert necklace when out on my 23 acres and I have an Internet check in service that allows 2 of my relatives to call if I don't check in.

@gybx4094 everything you mention is totally sensible. Why does my dad refuse all sensible measures and options offered to him ? (He was born in 1945. Different generation, maybe…) Yah, man. I’m an introvert and require more a little more alone time than the average bear, but humans are social creatures: I can’t imagine and wouldn’t want 100% alone time all the time. Hard for me to understand his position. Why can’t my Dad be more like @gybx4094 🙏

Very true what you say. I can highly reccomend getting rid of clutter! Know to many people who just stash whatever, because may they'll need it in the future. And it really pulls them down. So get rid of clutter, ALL of it. And you will never look back.
