I work on these cars daily as well as own one and they aren’t as bad as what everyone thinks, just make sure timing belt is done every 80-90k look out for coolant flange failure, cam follower, and turbo failure.

I’ve done enough DIY + upgrades/mods & OE retrofits that it’s made it worth it. I got hit in an accident, and negotiated with insurance, they actually added about $2k to the value due to mods/upgrades and service history, and the fact that there were no comparable examples to base the value off of; so I was able to get it repaired. When the cam follower issue popped up, had it repaired, this was before the factory knew it was a problem. Got reimbursed for the full amount. I change it about every 20k now. Changed it at 15k last time, showed very minimal wear. Add a ZDDP (zinc) additive which deposits a protective layer between metal components. Take *almost* everything Kilmer says with a grain of salt. He obviously knows German cars like I know rocket surgery.

I bought an 08 for $700 that "needed an engine" last year. Put a new valve cover on it (fixed oil consumption issue), replaced the cam, HPFP, timing chain and cam follower and it ran fantastic. Only cost me about $500 to fix it buying some used parts from the junkyard and some new parts online. I just bought a fully built 07 on air suspension with a cam follower failure and fixed it with all new parts for $1k. I see a few more of these in my future. Good money makers and nice cars to drive.

I have a b7 manufactured from 2006 bought 2nd hand from a person who took care of it and is being taken good care of by me from 2014, now at 280k km milage and I love it!! no oil leak, no coolant leak, runs really nice, even my passengers would be surprised that its got no squeak whatsoever for an old car, it recently got a stage 1 tune and I'm looking to rebuild the engine in the future replacing the weak points. no matter the brand if you take good care of the car it will last.

I love my b7, I’ve yet to run into any big issues as the second owner. At around 130k miles right now and drives like it just rolled off the dealership lot brand new. I just did both the timing belt AND chain 3 months ago. I do my cam follower ever couple oil changes It is definitely a beautiful expensive car to own but 100% worth it in my opinion

I have had an Audi a4b7 from 2005 for 3 years and bought it with 68000 km on the clock from a man born in 1930 and always stored indoors and dealer maintained (very difficult to find a like new car where you pay for age). I was looking for a car who brings me from A to B that I was sure I would not encounter those dramas with those modern engines and preferably not a turbo and not a complex automatic gearbox. So still with the 90s technology and without turbo. That has become an A4 that feels a bit underpowered. (not as much fun yawning and hunting on the highway) With the 102pk 1.6L petrol engine. Here in the Netherlands you are not allowed to go faster than 100 km / h during the day Well, then don't cry. Long distance I get 1:16 to 1:17 Too bad the torque isn't a bit bigger but you can't have everything. The car is realy like new and never any problems. A simple reliable car that will not let you down And I have not regretted the purchase for a second. But a young man likes to look and impress .... so unsuitable for young drivers. I have always driven an Audi and the Audis with the techniques from the 90s are really indestructible (with proper maintenance) In particular the 1.9 TDIs. They go long distance and normally ridden (so not "sporty") just 1 million km or more. No problem. And in the 90s a4s, for example, there is a water pump that lasts as long as the car lives. With modern cars they are much smaller, run much faster and are sometimes BEHIND the belts..... fine hey (NOT) Tip: dont buy the waterpomp with the plastic impellor (modification Audi)

I have a b7 and it's really reliable. I was surprised, the previous owner did not take care of it at all and the car still ran like a champ. I re did the whole suspension and tune up myself, had my mechanic do the timing chain and water pump. Car runs like new one of the most solid cars I've owned

I love them. Always get complemented from mechanics how well it runs for the age.

in Europe we drive them and kinda like them, they are not bad cars and we mainly drive the TDI (diesel) engines, they are pretty reliable and great on fuel economy. i personally had 2 A3-s and now owning A4 B7 3.0tdi for now i have not done major repairs, just normal maintenance like oil changes on 10-12k kilometers.

My 2006 A4 B7 2.0T has just hit 230k (miles). 10k oil change intervals using Mobil1 0w-40 and 50k cam follower change intervals. No issues with this schedule and within those 10k oil change intervals, I never need to top up the oil.

Yep, it's usually the 2nd owner that screws up the car, then the 3rd or 4th owner comes along and is the car's last hope for being taken care of. My B7 2.0T manual Avant has over 200,000 miles. I change the oil every 5k miles, the cam follower every 20k miles, and the timing belt and related components on schedule. I've sealed up the oil cooler and vacuum pump so I no longer have leaks. I've also replaced the oil cooler and coolant flange. I have meth injection so carbon buildup isn't really an issue. Sure it requires more attention than my Toyota, but it's also a lot more fun to drive, especially with a tune. At 250k-300k miles, I might get a K04 turbo and have more fun. Maybe I'll replace the original clutch at that point too. Oh and scotty kilmer is a fucking moron.

As long as you change the camshaft follower at every or every other oil change depending on how hard you drive the car, you'll be good. That's the biggest issue with FSI engines

Hey, I’m about to buy an Audi b7 from my uncle that’s only been driven 5000 miles a year so it was barely driven, but he never changed the camshaft followers. I never worked on a car outside of an oil change, do you think I’ll get away with its first replacement being 10+ years down the line?

@@wowowness the first thing you should have your uncle do is to remove the high pressure fuel pump and see if the pump has made a hole through the camshaft follower and has been hitting directly on camshaft. If you see slight scratchings on the camshaft but no heavy worn signs then you can just have him replace the follower. If the pump tip is worn have him buy a new high pressure fuel pump and change it together with the follower and you'd be good to go.

B7 A4 owner here. @ 3:46 while you're right about the cam follower issues (it was a design oversight by VW/Audi which is why you don't see it in maintenance schedules), I just wanted to clarify that checking the cam follower "religiously" every oil change is a complete waste of time. If you pull the HPFP you gotta replace the o-rings that seal the pump to the cylinder head (they typically don't seal very well when re-used) which can be a hassle to find on their own without getting a cam follower replacement kit (from ECStuning, for example). At that point you're pretty much doubling the cost of a 5k service. My car is JHM Stage 1 and the last time I checked I put about 15-20k miles on the car. Cam follower was fine. Others with higher tunes have also said they change every 3 oil changes or so. (btw you missed the common cracked Valve Cover issue that floods your Turbo and intercooler pipes with oil. That one's always fun to deal with 🤣)

Mine gets oil in the turbo and intercoolers but I inspected the valve cover when I replaced the gasket and could not find any cracks or separation. Wondering if it happens regardless due to poor design of the valve cover baffling. I’ve seen the videos showing how the inside of the valve cover separates though so I know it happens.

@@arie1293 It's totally normal to see A LITTLE BIT of oil in the intercooler pipes (maybe like 1/4 of a quart or so) but any more than that and you might have a soon-to-be bad turbo on your hands. If you ever see a lot of white smoke coming out the exhaust, then it's your turbo (that's oil burning in the cylinders being sucked up from all the oil sitting in the intercooler pipes). When my turbo blew I got a ton of misfires since the spark plugs get soaked in oil, and a MASSIVE plume of white smoke. Not trying to freak you out or anything, but those were my symptoms. $2700 bill at the stealership 😢

I had a 2008 A4 s-line package. Stock aside from the Stasis ECU stage1 upgrade. Bought it with 40k had it until 94k. Great car as long as it's maintained. Now my 2000 Audi TT was another story haha replaced everything at least twice.

I absolutely love my B7 S-line, and yes you have to keep up with the maintenance as stated in the video, timing belt is critical as well as cam follower. I installed H&R springs and lowered with rear JHM rear sway bar and Bilstein shocks and it sticks to the road like glue. Give it an APR stage 1,GFB diverter, a good stainless cat back exhaust system and these cars are a BLAST to drive, just hit the afterburner and your gone!!!

I have an ‘07 2.0t with 100k miles and cost of ownership has been very reasonable with the caveat of doing most of the maintenance myself. The most expensive work I’ve had done was timing belt replacement service at around 70k miles. Everything else I’ve been able to do myself. Valve cover gasket, rear cam chain timing cover gasket, rear coolant flange replacement, turbo waste gate solenoid, exhaust flex section just below the cat, diverter valve, and periodic replacement of high pressure fuel pump cam follower. Having all of this work done at a shop would have made cost of ownership pretty high compared to a Toyota IMO so I would probably still steer people away if they aren’t up do doing these kind of things themselves. Just watched Scotty’s video about the 2011 A4 with the locked engine prior to this one and glad mine doesn’t have a 1st gen keyless ignition but I’m pretty sure he didn’t have to jump it to pop the trunk. He could have accessed the emergency trunk release cord from folding down the back seat but that would have been less dramatic for his video. As far putting the battery in the trunk, the pros are that it is easier to pull compared to lifting that heavy ass battery from near the firewall up front and also if you install an aftermarket subwoofer and amp you wont have to deal with running thick gauge wire through the cabin to the trunk. Dodge does this with their Charger too. The pro of having the battery up front is that I have a full size spare in my trunk, something that hardly any modern cars come with.

I love my b7! I have a 3.2 v6 and will be undertaking a full engine rebuild as well as doing a turbo kit. The car is easy to fix and work on by yourself. Though I would recommend that any buyer of the b7 invest in a good scanner tool as a lot of things need to be reprogrammed after replacing. And do regular checks and maintenance (like on any car)

I've owned my B7 A4 since 2013. It currently has 270k kms and it has hands down been the most reliable car I have ever owned. Full stop. There hasn't really been any problems with the car. The only repair I had to do that was beyond wear & tear is that I had to replace the Cyl 1 fuel injector at 230k kms. Oh I replaced the vacuum pump and the cam solenoid at around 160k kms, they worked but had a slight oil leak so I replaced them. I'm struggling to even remember what I've had to do to this car because it was only little things. I've replaced the diverter valve & PCV once, cam follower a few times (had hardly any wear). It is a great car for our Canadian winters. Is the last true quattro and still has hydraulic steering so you know what the front end is doing. That is the biggest thing about newer cars, they all have terrible steering feel compared to my old trusty A4. Also, it has absolutely never left me stranded anywhere.

I have a a4 2.7 tdi v6.....170k miles it cost me £470 for a parstearing belt and dpf filter.. Full service history from the day it was bought for £ 21789 I bought it last March when diesel was £1,90 per litre for £2600,.my last car was a 1.9 tdi 130bhp 2003 a4 and I keep it for 11 years,just the usual parts and a new clutch 210k was a good car,but the v6 2.7 is a lovely drive smooth,comfortable,I wanted the estate to use to carry my tools,carpenter. Working in the UK and driving a estate with 4k worth tools on show,gives you anxiety that you're coming out and noticing there's glass in the motor and ground and the tools have vanished,I can get everything apart from a set of steps and chop saw,I'm happy enough with the saloon.

Hello sir. Thank you for the information and the boost of confidence. I recently bought a 2005 B7 1.9 TDI Manual transmission with a 78.9k miles. I had already replaced the Tensioner bearing (top) and Poly Vbelt. Apparently, there has been a repair done with what they call a "neutral guide" as well. I had noticed a few issues as well which I intend to get fixed as soon as possible - High idle: around 950 RPM - Does not rough idle - Rattling noise when reversing - I think the engine support bushing needs replacing The biggest issue I encountered is after using it for a few weeks. Down shifting to 2nd had become impossible. All of a sudden, I cannot downshift to 2nd, as if theres a wall blocking it. From 1st to 2nd, it upshifts, but if I over rev (say I am on an uphill path) it wouldn't go in as well. I'm a little stumped since the local mechanic says I might have to replace the transmission. - I mentioned some grinding on 1st (not all the time), grinding on 2nd (not all the time), and grinding on 4th (very very seldom) - I feel that it could be just an issue with the clutch I am no mechanic, but I have tried my best to fix some bits and bobs because I really love the car. (it's my dream to own a car like this when I was a kid). I hope for some insight on what possibly caused this and find a way to have it fixed without spending a lot of money. I am in the Philippines by the way. Thanks!

Engine , transmission in great shape, just had brake and some suspension wear(normal) , i paid 3,000 for car +1,500 on repairs and maintenance (for peace of mind).I love the fact that it gives me a new car feel without having to take out a car loan.

I have a B7 A4 2.0T Quattro. I love it. 280k on it up to this point. Small issues here and there, but I love it Major issue: Oil pump balancer exploded itself - replaced the entire Oil pump with the S3 one Medium issue: Exhaust decided to hang out. On the ground. behind the car. While doing 100 :)). Planning on replacing some parts, and probably replace the middle muffler with 2 Milltek resonators. (I hope its not gonna be too loud, but I want a bit more rumble, just not a fart can) Medium issue: Fuel pump in reservoir decided to off itself. Replaced it Minor issue: Rattling when pressing down the clutch. I think its time for a clutch kit replacement(including the throw out bearing and bearing fork). The only thing I'm not sure about is if I should replace the flywheel too. Double mass flywheels are expensive..

Common leaks to watch for vw/audi plastic flanges on cooling system. The one by the firewall is a pain to reach but it's not impossible to do. I found it not super hard to do myself. Also be able to deal with pinch bolt on front suspension when going to do shocks and coils. It's a pain to deal with but again not impossible.

I have a 2008 S-Line now, and I love it. I'd only buy one from the first or second owner, and never from a single woman with no thorough maintenance records (women tend not to do preventative maintenance). People will usual sell these either to upgrade, or when they start having normal wear and tear/maintenance issues they kept putting off, that worsened, and they don't want the expense of doing it. That's when you get a lemon, and someone offloading their problems onto you. When you decide to get a German luxury car you are signing up to exist in a completely different world, and need to understand that. They are far more complicated, and finicky than a Toyota or Honda. The problem I have with them are too may plastic parts that really should be metal (coolant flange on back of block, etc), and also that ridiculous oil filter housing assembly setup on the B7 instead of the common sense, more efficient spin-off type the B6 has. That was a HUGE step backward (WTF did Audi do that for 🤔??). Honestly, If I didn't know how to work on my own cars I probably wouldn't own an Audi. The costs of parts and labor, added to the quirkiness of why the engine light comes on, and something as minor as a bad crank position sensor causing the whole car to shut down and need a tow, is enough of a deterrent. I always research a models common failure points, recalls, and weaknesses before buying so I know what I might have to deal with.

I have a b7 S4 in northern Ontario Canada with the 4.2 ltr with a stage 3 supercharger and can tell you I'll never sell it. It sits in my garage in the winter's. I can tell you with the Recaro seats etc it's comfortable and a beast to drive. Pure driving machine. Love Audi it's the only car is ever drive. We use the SUV in the winter season

Driving 4.2L in Europe is damn luxury.. With price of almost 2 dollars per litre, it's nonsense driving it.. Specially if you have salary of 600 bucks...

The 1.8t is the best. 3.2 is V6 is ass.

Stage 1 Revo 2.0TFSI 128000 miles and still going strong. Love my B7 A4 quattro special edition. Why would you replace the cam follower every oil change? I bought my car on 67k miles, had the cam follow changed at 93k. Still had a black colour round the edges and only slightly worn in the middle. Won't be changing it again until another 90k miles. Edit: 2024 and it now has 170,000 miles. Had the cam chain done, replaced the turbo and cat (sports cat now). Balance shaft delete, pick up pipe changed. Car getting stage 2 tuned on Monday!

I’m quiet enjoying my b7 2.0tfsi Quattro! Just fitted a hybrid turbo n done all the common faults n I’m liking it! It’s not particularly fast but it’s ok :) Never had an Audi befor n been a bmw guy pretty much all my life!

I bought an Audi A4 B7 with 60K miles on it. 6 years later I put more money into it than what the car is worth. Horrible car but the performance/comfort was so good. I kept proper maintenance but constant leaks like crazy.

My guys been stage 2 and owned the car since early 2018, only major issue ever was one of the pipes burst but I mean. 10+ year old car upping boost to 20 peak is pretty up there but beside that never a major issue. Drove the car from New York to Texas to still 0 issues. B7 a4 hands down one of the best cars you can buy under 10k buy from a good owner with history or get f’d

As a an Audi A4 B7 owner I could say that the petrol versions are rather unreliable in comparison to the diesel variants. I myself have a 2.0TDI which has done 400k km and is still going strong (at 270k I changed the timing belt, oil pump [cos the original one failed and left me stranded with no oil pressure, had to retrofit golf pump which works like a charm], coolant pump, coolant. Also did EGR delete and a light chip tune from 140HP to 175HP so no more check engine lights and feels better than it ever has before). That's my take on A4 B7's.

Hi - just restoring a north american (Canadian) 2008 B7 2.0 quattro Avant. Bought new headlamps, DRLs, peanut light, turn signals all work - HID xenons fail to light. We tried the original set - and the same results occur - could this be a fuse potentially? Any ideas?

Its a 6 Speed auto not a 5 speed. Thats for the Tiptronic version. I dont have any idea for CVT.

I have a 2005 with almost 200k miles the stock motors never been cracked open other than valve cover stock 6 speed has a larger turbo and starts every day. I haven’t had any major issues 🤞

Hell yea bro, same here got an 07 2.0t with 205000 miles it’s in the shop to get a new timing belt and water pump and valve cover gasket it’s a real solid car

@@travistripp331 only thing I’d keep in mind bro is carbon cleaning our intake valves get nasty nasty I haven’t done mine yet but definitely consider that if you are looking for more preventative maintenance

I feel like if you keep up with the maintenance of the car you good. People go miles without even touching their cars. I have a 98 Lexus LS going close to 600k miles and it dries perfect

I own a 2008 A4 Quattro Cabriolet 2.0 and I can say you are spot on with every point you made. I love Scotty and watch him daily but even with the fuel and turbo issues, overall it’s a pretty great car. Even greater when properly maintained and nurtured. Owning an Audi was a headache at first but I love it now learned way more and got my hands dirtier than when I had my 06 Altima lol.

Often times that cars you need to work on yourself you value much more. Altimas aren't bad cars, but just a bit basic and the CVTs typically go out with the v6 motors.

got a B7 audi a4 avant 2l tdi, still goin been an expensive year though with repairs. Clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, slave cylinder and soon to be injectors... Still love the car even though it can sense my pay check xD

One of the more expensive repair costs Ik of is the timing but 2g’s at 70-80k miles isint bad at all. It’s all bad owners who can’t maintain their car then sell a broken car that’s never been maintained 😊

You do not need to replace every oil change that’s just stupid. I’ve gone about 35k on the cam follower. And my car is stage 1 tune. I could’ve probably went another 5k miles on it. But was almost about time to change.

depending if you got the EA888 engine or the EA113 block will depend on some of the issues you mentioned like the chains that a newer gen EA888 issues and started off as bad tensioners that came from the factory.. The EA113 I think is the better motor because the timing belt to me is superior. you can change the belt yourself at home way easier than a chain.. chains are not failure proof.. they are more a pain in the #$% if people don't change the oil often and it becomes a big job to do.

I think a lot of German cars get a bad reputation because people neglect them. I daily drove a high mileage E55 AMG for 4 years and it was actually great. Yes maintenance cost a lot more than other cars, but I got to drive a car every day that would blow the doors off almost everything else on the road. These little A4s aren't awful. They are just needy.

Im on my second B7 first one was a 1.9tdi now i got a 1.8t Quattro, if you service them they are reliable as a brick. I personally experience i can say corrosion protection in the back of the car is kinda shit, ive had do change so many plugs in the rear area.

The people who have issues with and complain about German cars are the ones driving them like they're a Toyota or Honda, never doing any maintenance.. They're engineered TO BE MAINTAINED.. The engineer doesn't care if you think you should maintain it or not. They aren't thinking about how the customer will treat the car. They're building it to be maintained by the book and for rules to be followed.. If you do not follow the rules, it's not the cars fault, it's your fault for neglecting your car.

Cam follower, coolant flange, turbo are all regularly failing parts just get keep tabs on em and get your chain done before 100k and youll be all set

These make great project cars because the amount of other vw/Audi engines you can put in them and builds since they have a good amount of aftermarket support but as you said these cars should only be touched by someone that is willing to work on it or learn how to. The 2.0T in my opinion is not a good engine out of the factory but if you go through it and strengthen all the failure points it can be good and then the 3.2 just sucks to work on
