Regarding Phasma, I wish they had kept in the deleted scene of how she loses that fight rather than what they went with. In a deleted scene, Finn makes a speech about how she encourages the storm troopers to be ready to sacrifice themselves, but when he held a gun to her head she shut down Starkiller Base's shields for him. Upon hearing this, the storm troopers turn on her. I think that would have been more powerful.

Instead, you kept going and you explained your feelings on the film in extraordinary detail and nuance. You made a genuine critique on the subject instead of just cherry picking good details, and you do that for all the movies you cover. It's that far more honest and stimulating dive into these movies that marks you as being head and shoulders above the channel that inspired your own, and makes me wish that I'd given you a shot back when I first heard about you all those years ago. 18:50 actually, the film develops Finn as only aligning himself with the Resistance to stick it to the First Order, not because he believed in their cause. We can see this difference between Rose and Finn on the final bits of Canto Bight, where Finn says “it was worth it though. To make them hurt.” But Rose corrects him freeing the Fathier and saying “now it’s worth it”. It’s extremely subtle and probably should have been developed more, but Finn wasn’t in fact trying to save something he loved, he was trying to destroy something he hated

You have a point, but I still think he should've died there. Like Shaffrilas says, he doesn't do a whole lot in RoS. Maybe would've been cool to see him and Rose have some conflict over that throughout the movie, only for Finn to save what he loves by fighting what he hates. Plus, the little speeder that's melting and falling apart taking down the huge cannon by messing up one little component would've been cool. The whole movie has a bit of a side theme of little things having a huge impact. One Jedi facing down the whole First Order, the one bomber taking down the dreadnaught, "They're not scanning for smaller ships", a small team infiltrating the massive ship that I forgot the name of so they could sabotage it, and of course the small spark that lights the fire to burn the First Order.

Another reason why I personally like this movie more then TROS. Whether he knew it or not, Rian chose the better, and most logical option here. Think about it for a sec: If she's actually Luke's child or Leia's, that would mean one of them abandoned their daughter, with no trustworthy eyes(at least in ROTS, they gave Luke to his aunt and uncle,w/ Obi-Wan as a guardian,and Leia w/ Bail Organa). Even if you say that they(Luke & Leia) did it to protect Rey, she could've just stayed on Luke's island in this movie. At least here she has someone watching over her who WON'T sell her out in a heartbeat. Her being a Palpatine sounds cool in theory, but it requires an ungodly amount of coincidences and leaps in logic in order to make sense. And seriously, when would he have done this? Why? And who's the grand-mom? Is there a grand-mom? I'm sure there's some book or several in old canon that might house answers(if there isn't, someone will write a book on it), but maybe that's not always a good idea. Her being a Kenobi is actually a good option, but it requires more unnecessary hula-hooping, and doesn't change a thing about Rey or Obi-Wan. It doesn't add any new dimensions to either of them. Rian's answer requires the least amount of leaps in logic and it closes the loop completely. Maybe not the most satisfying answer, but at least I buy it. I don't buy JJ's answer. Maybe I will as time goes by, but I'm willing to bet that won't be the case.

Like when cinema win said fin didn't know he couldn't destroy that battle ram with his pod(I did not see or hear that in the movie). The resurrection of Palpatine. They wasted this movie on a boring chase and a B plot that added nothing to the trilogy. Its lack of info makes the third movie feel like watching a different trilogy just dumping all the problems out of smilingly thin air. How did Palpatine get all those ships and people to the Sith planet. Where did Palpatine escape from the Death Star he literally explodes in the Death Star then the Death Star explodes. Or that the Jedi can heal why didn't that exist when Anakin needed to save Padme.

Yes! Also it needs to be repeated, somebody doing something you wouldn't do isn't a writing flaw, it's characterization! Well, usually. Sometimes characters do in fact do things that are inexplicibly foolish and out of character but most of the time a character makes a bad choice it's an extension of their characterization rather than an oversight of the writer. For example, Palpatine's trap for the rebellion in RTJ is just plain awful. It's terrible. It's supposed to be, though. Palpatine is a sadist and revels in inflicting misery. While the Empire's awful plan at the Battle of Endor doesn't meet it's goals within the view of a military strategist it does meet it's goals within the view of inflicting misery upon the rebels. If you wipe them out too quickly and efficienctly there's no long struggle filled with dread and that's what Palpatine wanted. Character's make inefficient decisions because *they aren't robots, they're characters.*

In the words of Poe before he went full on commando in The Last Jedi: "At least tell us you have some kind of plan, give us something to give us hope." There's no need for us to use an omniscient perspective to ridicule this movie, because it's laid out in front of the characters. CinemaWins tells us that Poe could be untrustworthy to Holdo, but why would he? He helped destroy StarKiller Base, he's done countless missions, and (according to the first of the trilogy) is at least on familiar terms with Leia. There are many good things about this movie, and some good subversions that I like. I love the cinematography and the CGI. This movie is a marvel and I'm probably going to watch it a third time right before the last movie. But frankly, I just don't like the plot of this movie by itself. I'm going to need the last of the trilogy to complete this thing, because right now it seems... incomprehensible with the rest of the series that's behind it.

I'm similar to you in a few respects, I definitely don't like these movies but these takes have helped me to at least understand other viewpoints on these films and for that I'm grateful. I just can't get past the disrespect Disney had for the fan-base by throwing three movies at us with no story planned out and hammered down (and at least 2 instances of bad storytelling in the process). I no longer trust anything that they put out unless someone like Favreau or Filoni is associated with it and that's just because they actually respect the fan-base and the underlying material. With that said, I'm happy for you that you can enjoy these movies- I'll never reach that point outside of a few scenes, but if these can make someone happy and draw new fans in to the better films then at least they are doing some good.

"Don't limit the Force!" Well, as Vader himself pointed out: "The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force." Also, in the old Expanded Universe, Obi-Wan Kenobi was very weak in the Force. Many on the Jedi Council believed he'd never make it as a Jedi. So Kenobi kept trying, training and practicing, becoming one of the greatest Jedi of all time and THE greatest defensive lightsaber duelist ever. Kenobi started as a nobody.
@boggless2771
@boggless2771 4 жыл бұрын
Thats whats wrong with this trilogy IMO. Nobody has ever been seen being a tenth as powerful as Rey before being trained, or at least practicing using the force. Luke, before training, could only let the force control his actions, ex. blocking the lasers on the falcon, and shooting the proton torpedoes. Then after a while of him being in the rebellion, where it is believable that he trained, he was barely able to pull his lightsaber from the ice in Empire Strikes Back. After training with yoda for what people can only guess how long, he was able to lift a few boulders with no pressure, and force choke people. All feats that vader does with no effort, so its believable he can too. Rey was able to tie with Kylo in pulling Anakin's lightsaber in the throne room, she cracked the ground where she was standing without trying to, and in TFA, right after finding out about the force, she was able to read Kylo's mind. Kenobi, Anakin, Luke, and Ezra / Kanan (if you watch Rebels), had to train to become stronger.
@HunhowsShadowStalker
@HunhowsShadowStalker 4 жыл бұрын
@@boggless2771 However, remember that one scene in Force Awakens where Kylo and Rey were both pulling on Anakin's lightsaber to get it out of the snow? They were both struggling like hell, yet were also pulling from an angle where neither of them would actually hinder the other (the lightsaber flies past Kylo towards Rey), implying Rey and Kylo TOGETHER struggled with pulling a lightsaber out of the snow, whereas a semi-trained, barely-conscious Luke had less trouble on his own. Also, for an example of a character being as powerful as Rey, I suggest you look up the character known as Vaylin. Without actual training, she was able to effortlessly crush the armor of her father's guards and shatter a wooden training dummy. Vaylin, before her training, was more powerul than most fully-trained Jedi at the time. The Eternal Empire Valkorion (actually the Sith Emperor Vitiate) had to perform rituals to lock away a large amount of Vaylin's power because he feared it. So, Rey isn't all that unbelievable if you keep Vaylin in mind.

@@HunhowsShadowStalker i think Ive seen a clip of her crushing everything, but that stuff isnt canon anymore right? It looks awesome, but I dont like it as a character. @HunhowsShadowStalker
@HunhowsShadowStalker 4 жыл бұрын
@@boggless2771 It's debatable, as the Old Republic hasn't done anything that contradicts the movies, and it has been confirmed that Revan is canon. Regardless, it's still an example of a character being born with incredible power. Compared to Vaylin, Rey is nothing. Rey struggled with a simple mind trick and pulling a Lightsaber out of the snow (very simply Force skills from what we've seen), and that was when she first discovered she even had Force powers. Sure, Rey seemed extremely powerful out of the blue, but it might just be a case of Kylo not being nearly as strong as we were led to believe. In the case of Anakin's lightsaber breaking, remember that each lightsaber is powered by a Kyber Crystal, which are naturally attuned to the Light Side. For all we know, Kylo's pull was stronger, but the lightsaber "wanted" to go to Rey due to her use of the Light Side. Even Rey's fighting skills aren't that questionable, as she has a lot of skill when it comes to fighting with a staff from her history on Jakku (come on, a fairly attractive human female on a desert planet with mostly ugly alien guys? It's either become everyone's bitch or fight to protect yourself). And in her only "real" fight against Kylo, Kylo himself was injured from a Bowcaster shot, which sent regular people flying from the sheer power behind the shot. She hasn't really done anything that can't be explained with a little knowledge of stories beyond the movies.
@boggless2771

@@HunhowsShadowStalker Kylo is absolutely supposed to be strong. He freezes a blaster bolt midair. Vader could neutralize with his hand (ESB), but I've never seen anyone freeze a blaster bolt. Thats meant to show his strength. Ive seen all the (edit: still canon) shows, but havent read any material, nor have I seen the old republic stuff, outside of some clips (the eternal twins and the male dathomirian (maul's race) jedi and his padawan). Nothing I have seen in it breaks the lore, but it takes the power up to 11. Yoda struggled to lift the x-wing in ESM and lifted that tower thing in AotC. That girl completely blows that out of the water. And knowing that there's no training makes me dislike it even more. I'm fine with rey being able to use a lightsaber, but she still shouldn't hold a candle to a trained sith lord, though TLJ kinda poops on his lightsaber skills.

My theater went wild with pretty much every scene that was meant to be taken that way, people roar'd with the Holdo Maneuver and went absolutely nuts when Luke turned out to be a projection. What I believe Rian made right was to give us a incredible experience watching it (specially on theaters), regardless of plot holes/inconsistencies with the lore. It was a great movie and I will never not praise Rian guts to pull it off.

It also makes "loss" MEANINGLESS ... so there is no more reason to cry ... and no more reason to rejoice ... because everything turns into "whatever" or "stuff happens". You NEED some stakes and bad things happening to have any drama ... but if "you arent really gone" it doesnt matter if people die. This is why such a way of arguing is stupid. The universe is unfair and tough shit happens ... and the big question is how we deal with it. THAT is the challenge of life and having a "pony farm life" where nothing truly bad happens is going to be a boring and meaningless life.

@@Muck006 it's an interesting point that you make, and I actually agree with you, you need heavy stuff to happen in order to have meaning, but in this particular scene i do not think it was meant to undone all of the pain and grieve that Leia was feeling, but to lighten it. Because loosing someone will always be painful, no matter what,(ofc if they literally come back that's a whole other story, but that's not the case here). However we do leave things behind, maybe it's a small object, a phrase, a one of a kind smile etc. These things can remind us of the person we've lost and they ways they had an impact on our lives and how they'd changed it. And in that sense they will be with us "forever" and this is how "No one’s ever really gone.” But that doesn't mean we don't have to deal with the loss of that person. At least that's my take of the matter. I also think this sentence could be interpreted in two more ways: 1, This is how Luke thanks Leia for looking for him all that time and believing that he will return. 2, Encouraging her to keep believing Kylo is not gone forever (just like Vader)

I actually really loved the little comedy sketch in the start for a number of meta reasons -- 1, it's some MUCH needed levity for a VERY heavy movie, without which, we wouldn't really feel the seriousness of everyone's lowest point (esp Poe's descent into despair and mutiny) 2, excellent establishing character moments for BOTH Poe and Hux -- Poe has this very 'Aladdin' type cunning, where he talks and tricks his way into advantages, BUT, it's also not without it's flaws and weaknesses, while Hux is extremely focused on things basically going his way, according to his PLANS, and anything that challenges his sense of order and hierarchy doesn't just throw him, it makes him personally angry. 3, contrasting the exact type of worldview of the Resistance and the First Order -- one being a loose chain of command, but still with individual autonomy of the people, and the other being so strict and harsh that even when the lower officer points out the obvious, it's almost like he's tiptoeing around a fear that he might get in trouble for speaking out of turn. It's all great!

36:05 I'm not sure if I'm interpreting the comment about floating correctly, but the auxiliary ship seeming to slow down in this shot makes sense. The ship isn't braking or anything: it's just not accelerating anymore because it ran out of fuel. The camera is in reference to the Supremacy and the Raddus, which are still accelerating forward, so although the auxiliary ship is still moving forward (at a presumably constant velocity), with reference to the accelerating camera it looks like it's falling behind.

@King Wobbegong, Sea Urchin Farmer Did you... even read what I said? The auxiliary ship is moving at constant speed with reference to a fixed reference frame. The camera, however, is situated in an accelerating reference frame along with the accelerating Raddus and the Supremacy, whose engines are still active. So the auxiliary ship is decelerating _with respect to this non-inertial reference frame._ ... and you know, what's worse is that you're not even technically correct in this scenario. Yes, objects on which the net force is zero do not change velocity. However, since they're in a star system, there is non-negligible gravitational force acting on even a dead ship. Gravity exists in space. That's why planets stay in orbit.

Yet here comes Rey beating a dark side user trained both by Luke and snoke, the first time she even held a lightsaber. Did you even watch the movie? and he did more than that, Yoda taught him skills and the way with the force, he failed time and time again, eventually gave up, but after much training he finally became great. Rey used the force, and did a bunch of crap from self teaching. She's just a terrible Mary Sue - objectively - she is the definition of a Mary Sue through and through and using "the force" or other things to explain it away just doesn't cut it. If it did the movie wouldn't need multiple books to back it up. Not even to mention how they utterly destroyed Luke's character and how not telling your best leader your plan doesn't make a lick of sense. The movie has so many holes, oversights, and just all around crap directing by a guy who's just trying to impress the CEO of Disney with "wamen power". Sure it looked good, but the story and universe is utter crap. and Anikin's skill set was not hand-to-hand combat? Well firstly he was a protege pilot, but he trained in combat from such an early age it shouldn't really matter, you can be good at something naturally and train to do something else just as good. Also, if he didn't need to train he'd have beaten him with force alone being one of the most powerful in it. If good Jedi didn't need training then Luke, Anakin, Yoda, Obi Wan, and even the freaking Emperor wouldn't have needed masters - but they did... every single one of the required a master to be able to, at the very least, learn to use the force. Don't get me wrong, if you like it, great. But too many people are not accepting of any criticism and a lot are also pushing out the old fans who dislike the new movies because they messed with the universe completely - even Ryan and that CEO lady said that people who don't like the movie are sexist and can't handle a female lead - which isn't true at all, if it were we'd also hate Alien & Terminator 2 among many, many other classics with strong female leads - the new fan base has just caused so much toxicity because old fans dislike the movies and they don't respect each other's opinions, and that is what is really killing this franchise - never mind it going into the paws of *The Mouse* and pushing political crap left and right as they do.

Also, consider the casualties. Everyone on the starship you turn into a hyperspace bullet is essentially dead. Cruisers have hundreds if not thousand of crew members. That's as much as tens of thousands of collective years of training and experience of operating a starship lost on a maneuver that might not work if your opponent sees it coming. The Hyperspace Ram worked in this case at reasonable cost because it was a big ship which the crew had already abandoned and which the antagonists did not shoot down when the hyperactive was being activated because they were focused exclusively on other vulnerable targets that they knew had Resistance members on board.

@@josephperez2004 Ok, but why didn't they destroy the original death star ths way? This one scene is what made me drop the last trilogy. Everyone in the Rebellion, par Han, was willing to sacrifice their lives to destroy the Death star, why not just have 3-4 x-wings quick hyperspace through the death star and be done with it? Or if "No dude death star had protective shields" and whatnot, hmmmm maybe hyperrspace into the exhaust that they were trying to fire missiles into anyway?? It just makes Ep IV and VI seem kinda meaningless for me.
@josephperez2004
@josephperez2004 2 жыл бұрын
@@svammarcool I believe it's a matter of scale, i.e. mass. The reason it worked in The Last Jedi was that the cruiser is in the same magnitude of mass as most of the ships it destroyed, or only one or two magnitudes lower. So while the Hyperspace Blitz tears it apart, it's mass and speed combined create enough of an impact to do serious damage. The Death Star however is the size of a small moon and well over a half dozen magnitudes larger than a starfighter or freighter. You could have a fleet of X-Wings and YT freighter blast themselves against it at hyperspeed and it would likely still be operational because their mass is so infinitesimal in comparison to a space station the size of a moon (which is probably why the Empire built a space station that could fire a beam to blow up planets rather than fully automate a Star Destroyer and hyperspace blitz it at a planet. The planet might get a crater, but it would still be there). One could make the comparison of firing a bullet, but here's the thing. A bullet is effective against people because we're made of materials (meat and bone) much less solid than metal. Starships of almost all description are made of roughly the same density of materials. As for the idea of hyperspace blitzing into the exhaust port, keep in mind the angle, trajectory and various other factors need to be just right to hit a target that small and the further away you are the harder it can be. We're talking fractions of a fraction of a degree. And if the pilots get closer, they now need to worry about staying alive in a dogfight long enough to input the commands for the jump and get the angle right. I need to reread my comment on this thread, because I may need just be reiterating my stance again. The only reason the Hyperspace Blitz worked was because the situation was perfect for it. There was a flight of ships in close formation roughly the same magnitude or only one or two higher than the sacrificed ship, the sacrificed ship was being completely ignored while it charged its hyperdrive in favor of attacking more vulnerable targets because the hyperdrive activation was being viewed as a decoy to save those targets, and the precision of the course set did not need to be especially specific to hit a weak point or risk missing the targets entirely.

Everyone has their opinions but no. The new trilogy has a few good vfx scenes and thats it. The comedy is horrible they ruined luke. The ruined the EU. The main character literally has zero flaws. Finn is still a soulless character. I genuinely dont see how people enjoy these new movies. This is not a case like the original prequels. Those movies stayed true to a T with star wars lore. Only bad part was the script sometimes. Other than that every lightsaber battle, the politics. An actual character ark between not only Anakin but Obi Wan, Yoda etc. were handled wayyy better. Also the emotion actually meant stuck especially the last dialogue with Anakin and Obi wan. Seriously fuck these new movies

@@adaml1463 glad you liked that part! I really liked the visual design of Crait from the moment they landed to the Resistance's escape. I hope that when Ep. IX comes out, this will feel like more of a single chapter in the saga. I liked it but I feel like the script could have used another draft. It feels like they kind of wrote themselves into a corner with this one. As of now, the only thing that the movie set up for IX was the possibility of Rey having to become a teacher of future Jedi on her own. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they go for a time gap, just to give Leia some time to pass on in between movies. Going back to the whole Rey thing, I like how the movie questions the efficacy of the light vs. dark element of the Force, and how Rey and Kylo had a link that allowed for them to communicate and empathize with each other, bringing both of them closer to the middle. But at the end of the movie, everything goes back to the status quo. But hey, Ep IX is the finale anyway, so let's see what they do, as long as there isn't another space cannon...

Yes this exactly. I think Luke's arc was FANTASTIC for all the reason this video describes and really draws the Star Wars series in a new light, even contextualizing some of the worst aspects of the prequels. I also think the casino subplot was 90% boring filler garbage that is absolutely worth complaining about (unless ofc you're personally attacking the poor actress hired to play Rose, she doesn't deserve to be treated that way for playing a part the way it was written, no one does). Opinions on TLJ are pretty nuanced because the movie itself has more nuance than I think a lot of the Star Wars films do. It's not just black-and-white, that's the whole message of the movie, and ironically the message that members of the fanbase jumping in one direction or the other have completely missed.

But staying a critic and curious is excellent, because this movie has a lot of strong points, some very objective (quality of acting, decor, special effects, music, etc.). The rest, especially the story, has some weak points. But to consider it with distance or curiosity is something great.
