I love hearing your opinion on Antebellum and scrolling through the comments to hear what people in other places thought. I think where you ome from definitely makes a difference. I'm actually from the American south, where slavery happened, and for me I had an uncomfortable feeling watching it but it stemmed not from feeling like it was empowering but from feeling like I was watching what felt like borderline torture porn on black people.

No movie ever made me feel as horrible as Irreversible, it's also the only movie where I had to walk out for a few minutes because I couldn't handle sitting through THAT whole scene. I don't think I wanna subject myself to that experience again. Still gonna buy it on Blu-ray though, I actually really like Noe's other films and want to have his whole filmography. Still haven't seen I Stand Alone because I'm scared, but I need to do it for Gaspar someday

A Serbian Film, Salo, and Happiness. I've heard all 4 have scenes of explicit child s*xual abuse, which is not an entertaining type of horror for me. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to watch them! Do you have any others you haven't been able to watch? Irreversible was almost unwatchable for me too, I didn't walk out but I cried a bit. Have you seen Climax? Gaspar definitely has a head for making realistic horror
@nopizzawithoutpineapple
@nopizzawithoutpineapple 3 жыл бұрын
@@haleyarmstrong8595 yeah, I'll not be touching A Serbian Film and Salo. But Happiness is on my watchlist, I think I can handle it cause as far as I know the movie isn't full of that shit. The Invitation pushed me to my limits. It's not extreme violence, but it's basically a horror about social anxiety and it portraits it really well. Snowtown is also pretty tough, it's a true crime movie and aggressively bleak YES and I absolutely love Climax, it's one of my favorite movies :)

I liked Spiral, and I think the point of it was that because of the systematic bigotry in American society, the townsfolk (who are definitely vampires or something similarly inhuman) were able to get away with their sacrificing of minority individuals. The whole twist is that they themselves weren't bigots, but that they just took advantage of human prejudices in order to feed. It did get a bit confusing with the sudden introduction of the supernatural, but watching it a second time definitely helps to see all the hints at what's really going on. Love your reviews as always, keep it up! ^_^

Thanks for reviewing Antebellum! Like so much horror, not everyone's taste. There have been horror movies set in American slavery, but nothing with this premise that I know of. It evokes 10 Years Slave more than anything though it isn't genre horror. Check out shudders Horror Noire about the history of black horror cinema. You might get some ideas to review. Id love to see you review Ganja & Hess.

Emma, please keep up the rundown as it points me in the right direction. Irreversible is an amazing film, a DJ friend of mine once put it on in the nightclub he worked in, as a background movie not realising what he brought with him and nearly got fired from his job because of the complaints! Also, watch Truth Seekers on Amazon, Pegg and Frost - amazing series.

Thanks for the monthly recap, Emma. I remember "Orphan" and that amazing plot twist. I had the secret of Antebellum spoiled for me, but that's okay. I doubt I would have enjoyed the film because of it. Here is my September re-cap of horror/thrillers: NIGHT CREATURES (1962) - score 6/10 FANTASY ISLAND (2020) - score 6/10 SCHIZOID (1980) - score 5/10 BE MY CAT: A FILM FOR ANNE (2015) - score 3/10 (based on your recommendation, which the score is not reflected on you) NIGHT OF THE LEPUS (1972) - score 5/10 X-RAY (1981) - score 5/10 THE DARK (1979) - score 3/10 DON'T DELIVER US FROM EVIL (1971) - score 4/10 (another Emma recommendation) SANTO IN THE HOTEL OF DEATH (1963) - score 6/10 THE CASTLE OF MUMMIES OF GUANAJUATO (1973) - score 6/10 (Mexican wrestlers vs. mummy zombies, great fun) ANGUISH (1987) - score 5/10 GAMERA VS. VIRAS (1968) - score 6/10 THE GHOST BREAKERS (1940) - score 6/10 MURDER ON FLIGHT 502 (1975) - score 9/10 (murder mystery on an airplane, great cast) THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1927) - score 8/10 (silent classic) THE LAST WARNING (1928) - score 7/10 (silent classic) WEREWOLF IN A GIRL'S DORMITORY (1961) - score 4/10 (must see from the title alone)

All of the episodes of each season are/were on KZbin, and I rewatched all of them a few years ago. Absolutely a product of it’s time, but the stories still stood up with great characters that you love to love and love to hate, and, for the time it was produced, hardcore themes. That show will always hold a very special place in my memories....thank you Australia 🇦🇺💖🙏

I adore your content because you practically go out of your way to review or watch niche or foreign langauge films (being from Argentina , practically everything in horror is foreign language film for me) but I really enjoy watching movies from countries that move away from the mainstream. scope. I know that you are preparing yourself for those 13 days but I would like to aditionally recomend Hulu's Monsterland TV anthology : I loved it , its a very realistic and bleak compilation of stories beautifully shot and acted , I will make a disclaimer though and it'll be not to expect so much monsters (I know, paradoxical haha) because as it is well known the biggest monsters are really ourselves.

It was 10 in the morning😱 The lady in charge of the viewing told us we could walk out at any point.... which I did for 15 minutes after "that scene"... Me... at 10ish in the morning crying... in the cinema's bathroom... NEVER AGAIN!

"The Dark" is great I really liked "Spiral" and the unanswered questions don't bother me; to me the movie illustrates the encroaching paranoia of being an oppressed identity in a privileged neighbourhood; there's a weird amalgamation of literal real-life and how that feeds into a projected paranoid nightmare; personally the consistency of the details doesn't matter too much

Antebellum is worth watching for the style alone. The camera work, fashion, soundtrack, editing, etc, are all tops across the board. Monae is excellent, Malone seems to be the only one who realizes how absurd the story is and chews the scenery appropriately, Sidibe is actually kind of funny but she is totally let down by the dialogue she is forced to read. The opening may be filled with "slavery torture porn", but it's actually not as explicit as one would think (its mostly implied), and it takes on a deeper meaning in the context of the story while making the pay offs in the second half even more satisfying. There are a couple sequences here (one involving a fire, one involving Monae and Malone) that just left me feeling so giddy. Is it exploitation?? Yeah, maybe a little. Is it a total mess? For the most part. Is it wildly entertaining and unpredictable? For the most part, yes. It's like one of those odd ball films that have creativity about them that you don't normally see come out of the system very often. I would have never seen it in theaters (and honestly, it's better watched at home with friends), but the hate its getting is far too much.

I loved Spiral. Favorite horror movie of 2020 so far. I watched it twice and I never do that. I just thought Antebellum was just okay? I wish we hadnt paid 20 bucks for it though.

I 1st watched irreversible about 15 or so years ago. I was house sitting for a friend and i found it whilst raiding her dvd collection. It stayed with me long after i watched it. That same weekend I watched Salo and Switchblade romance. All very different movies but imo equally f**ked up.

I completely agree with you about Irreversible. I’ve seen pretty much every disturbing film and the cinematography and use of sound in that film managed to disturb me more than any other movie. Not Salo, not A Serbian Film...Irreversible.

I watched The Ordeal right after you recommended it because I never even heard of it before. It's not even really available in the US, I found it on some sketchy site haha. There was a lot in it that I appreciated but I have mixed feelings about it because it felt so similar to other films. I was constantly reminded of Misery, Deliverance, and especially Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The dinner scene didn't have an impact on me because I was just thinking about how Texas Chainsaw's version was better. It seemed far-fetched that the entire village was mentally ill. I give it credit for being so uncomfortable and gross but I don't really know what the point was. Edit: Also I lovee Pen-15! I'm 28 so it's perfect for me as well. I'm glad to see it's just as relatable to Australians haha.

I personally love these "everything I watched..." videos because you talk about movies you don't have a review of (since you're a human being and ain't nobody got time for that many reviews). I wanted to know your thoughts about Antebellum. I mean, it's an interesting movie but I think the message becomes a bit tainted by the third act, I don't know. And the characters for me are very one-dimensional as well.
