Lost my mk4 R32 to a deer a little bit back, replaced it with a mk6 R. Nothing wrong with the R, it will just never be as fun, as aggressive, as in your face and dominant as the mk4 R32. The deep throaty sound of the 3.2 vr6 demands attention as it rolls down the road and the car stands out slightly more than other golfs because of the oem body kits. Truly my most favorite car I've own hands down.

As of yesterday I now own a '04 DBP R32. I drove 5.5 hours to test drive it then 5.5 hours back. Yesterday I went down and picked it up. I have been watching the videos in this list over and over trying to glean what knowledge I can. In addition, I plan on trying to sign up for your HM Crew Member to try and get even more information. VR6 is the best sounding engine VW has ever made, possibly one of thee best sounding engines ever made! Top 10 for sure. Put that in a package with, imo, the best looking golf VW has ever made and you truley got yourself a special car. I really want to own one of these someday and I'm not even a fan of European cars. It just looks and sounds so good with a platform built to be modded around the driver.

I've always wanted an R32, but I'm not a mechanic, so I'll probably never get one. Thankfully I was able to get two 2013 VW CCs with the 3.6 VR6, so I get the amazing sound (after dropping less than $1k on the exhaust) and modern comfort & convenience. No rust, no creaks, everything works, more loaded than an A6, looks beautiful, and has low mileage. I highly recommend it to anyone instead of an ancient R32, even though I love those rust buckets too.

Haha! I also flew to NC to pick up my '04 reflex silver R32 as well. Charles, just wanted to give you a great tip that recently helped me out on that interior trim with the rubberized coating (if you are going to repaint them). To help remove the paint, I used a 90% isopropyl alcohol and a stiff nylon brush to remove the residue. Clean and re-clean with same alcohol and terry cloths. I then applied a adhesion promoter and a flat black painters touch paint. My trim now looks good as new, minus the sticky coating.

Bought the equivalent bushing kit for my mk3 Jetta TDI. Had issues putting the gear shift into 1st gear. The new bushings as well as gear oil did wonders. Along with a lot of other things I did, my dad said it felt as smooth as when he drove it off the dealership lot brand new.
@mariospantouvanos46456 жыл бұрын
It's kinda weird that similarly aged cars can have very different conditions with different owners. It seems that the previous owner sipped almost every last drop of blood this poor R32 had. My dad's Ford Focus C-Max from 2005 with 115k kms drives, performs and it's interior feels like it's brand new. Quite mind boggling
@VndNvwYvvSvv6 жыл бұрын
It might feel like it drives fine, but you'd be surprised what you find when you go over a car with a fine toothed comb and the eye of a professional.
@mariospantouvanos46456 жыл бұрын
A daft punk The reality is that they found slightly worn out lower control arm bushings, but the service guys said that it is not something we should be concerned with. Now that we have new shock absorbers it handles quite precisely for a car of its category.

As an owner of a pristine 2000 Golf GTI GLX VR6, this R32 is sadly totally thrashed. Yes there are lots of age and wear related issues with these cars, but frankly this one has been abused by owners dicking about when they shouldn’t have. A lot of the broken trim items can be avoided by simply taking ones time and looking online for how to advice before opening the dashboard, door or console. Best of luck with this specimen, you are going to need it.

@HumbleMechanic6 жыл бұрын
Me too. I ordered a battery cover. And the guys at DieselGeek sent me a belly pan. Which is awesome.
@emotionz36 жыл бұрын
Everyone from Backyard mechanics to Body shops are notorious for leaving off belly pans, or at the very least not securing them properly where they make noise or flop around. You practically have to do everything on a car yourself if you want it done right. The only alternative is a dealer with a master mechanics and a fat wallet in your pocket. Personally I’d never trust anyone other than the dealer or myself to do a clutch or timing belt/chain on a VW. You are guaranteed bolts will be put back in the wrong place, or missing, and nothing will be torqued correctly.

I personally drive a 2001 vw golf GTI with the 2.8 vr6 and a 5 speed. The problems are identical, other than the wheels because I run 1994 Corvette rims, so it's kind of nice to see I'm not unique. Something that is driving me crazy is water jets from windshield not working at all (but xenon ones working great) I supose now that I have to change my timing belt shouldn´t be hard to pinpoint the issue! That sound is worth everything btw. Even better than my R33 I would say. Enjoy it!

I’ve owned my R32 since 2007 and it also needs some minor fixes. 131k and it still rips! Following along on this one 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Interested in finding out how many parts are NLA 😢

Exactly why i got rid of my last vw. Ive had 2 mk4 gli's. 24v six speed and a tiptronic 1.8t. The 1.8t looked cooler but the vr6 was much better. However maintaining them and poor fuel economy kept me poor. Now i have two japanese vehicles and rarely have more than oil changes. But I can also use the cheap gas too!

I'm really excited about this project. There are a few DIYs that will help with issues I have on my 20th.

Make videos of all repairs. Charles! Those suspensions repairs excites me the most :) Also not to mention the shifter mechanism!

Oh yeah! It's the only way I can justify the car I don't need HAHAH. Luckily my wife likes the color so she is happy too.

You counted the wheels twice, so you can immediately drop the number of problems by four :-D No words to describe the sound of that car, beyond fantastic...
@HumbleMechanic6 жыл бұрын
I counted them once for needing refinishing and once for being bent. 2 different repairs if the repairs get made. OR one solution if they get replaced. LOL

Will be checking the progress of your R32 sir, as a VR6 guy myself always happy to see another VR is in great hands.. You cant forget that sound comes mile away... Thats VR6 👊

Awesome; my 04 gti shares 80% of your car's issues 😄 and I've been the only owner 👽...I've removed the soft touch and plastic polished the stuff around the ash tray/cage; will do door handles next...go aftermarket wheels; I like the 18s but 15 spokes is too hard to clean plus you can change the color (go gun metal) of the wheel...will be looking out for future episodes 👍

@HumbleMechanic, I don't know OEM you want to keep the R32, but if you ever want to replace the headlights, VXTuning makes very nice sets. I picked up a set of 20th AE style projectors with a 6K HID kit pre-installed and it plugged right in. I believe they actually start off with OEM headlights and customize them. Also, great video!

Awesome!! I’m gonna pick up some glass lenses from a local dude next week. After that we will see how that looks. :)

Glad to see someone showing a Mk4 some love! They only ever seem to get hate most places I've been. :( I'm currently saving up to buy myself a 1998-2010 New Beetle. I've noticed on the Beetles that the 2.0 and the 1.8T are usually around the same price, and that the 5 speed manual is WAY more common on the 1.8T (Heck, I've even seen some Turbo S in my budget!) but I've heard that the 2.0 is WAY more reliable than the 1.8T so I'm kind of pitting the logical side of my brain against the passionate side of my brain... :P (Especially since I'm planning on starting college next year... Only 6 years late, but better late than never lol) I guess my questions to you would be... 1. Is the 1.8T REALLY that unreliable of an engine? I know about the water pump/timing belt interference engine shenanigans, but have no idea how commonly the repair has to be done or how much the repair usually costs. 2. Assuming in advance that the 1.8T is a heap and that the 2.0 is the only logical answer for a Bug on a budget, how much does it cost to have a manual transmission swapped in? (Would attempt to do it myself, but I live in an apartment complex and don't have anywhere I could attempt... Nor am I very mechanically skilled. :P) 3. I've heard you can add a 6th gear to the 5 speed manual without replacing the entire transmission? Is this true? Thanks in advance, and good luck with the R32! : D (PS, won't have the cash til around September but I might make a "here in my garage" parody when I pick up my Buggo... Well, "here in my apartment parking lot" anyways. XD)

Christopher Williams the odds of getting an honest deal on a Beetle of that age are slim. character or reliability... vote with your wallet.
@christopherwilliams94186 жыл бұрын
I mean, I'm willing to pay for a repair here and there, willing to deal with the AC going out or other little inconveniences, so long as I can keep the car road worthy and tackle issues as they appear I'm okay. What I'm not willing to do, however, is roll over and submit myself to the beige this early. I'll drive a 2.0 if that's more reliable, I'll even leave it mostly stock until I finish college, but if you see me in a Camry or Accord I'm probably taking Lyft to work. :P

That is a long list of repairs for that wookie! Excited to see how you get through everything. I've got a project R32 that I've been working on for around 8 months and it's finally in a good spot. Doesn't have a stock exhaust though - I need to find one so I can get my wookie sounds back!

Would love to see a soft touch repair diy, a steel belly pan install, strut mount install (and why the Meyle HD ones fail by the center busting out), and anything else you do to this since I have 3 MKIV's. I've got several extra rear headliner trim pieces, but shipping might cost more than getting one local. Please post where you find a rear cargo cover and what it runs you. A DIY on fixing the strings that hold the cargo cover up would be awesome!!!

I do love the MK3 better. But owning myself an Audi A3 8l, based on the MK4 golf I'm interesting in watching you fixing what's wrong with it. For the front top mount bushing I would use the powerflex pff85-431. The others id go OEM due to comfort.
