This is a good and helpful video. Two points I would add: 1. You can easily bend an aluminum drip edge but not a steel drip edge. 2. When you are sloping over a 50' length of eavestrough, It is not possible to get it all under the drip edge. In closing, I will also add it is amazing how many roofers do not install drip edge or install it super tight against the fascia board.

I just replace my roof $17k I had the roofer come back and replace 10ft of drip edge because it was a little bent. GUTTER guy came to do a brand new install bent all the drip edge around the house luckily for this video you saved his life lol, good idea after post this video.

this is correct and point missed by most. however, you have your gutter butted up to your drip edge. in the event of a overflow, this would result in wicking up the drip edge or even back splashing. i was always under the advisement that gutters should be mounted a minimum of 1-2" below drip edge

Our roof has drip edge flashing under the shingles, and current gutters are behind it. We have to have a run replaced, and the gutter profile has a one inch lip that is a 90 degree angle pointing backward toward the roof -- I guess that is like it's own drip edge. NOt sure if the gutter guy will be able to get that under the drip edge.

I install drip strip if my gutter is not under the drip edge. It looks alot better, and I believe it's more effective.

I had a new roof installed and feel like the roofing company should have done this or made the drip edge bigger so that overlaps the gutter. Either way I think it’s their responsibility to have done that correctly. I am now having to go off and bend it like you show in this video which works but really be something they should’ve done when they installed the roof

Quick question for you buddy I install gutters here in Mobile & we do alot of installs on houses that have a new roof /drip edge! They are so tight we have to use these tools to do what you are doing in the video to open that drip edge up and get the gutter behind it but roofers dont like us doing it ..any suggestions ? TIA

My gutter has a drip edge installed. The gutter is behind the the drip edge. I still get water dripping behind the gutter. I'm wondering if water is getting through the holes of the gutter hangers (spike and ferrules). Usually occurs in the winter when there is ice. What would be a good quick fix, and best solution?

Over a 24 ft. run on a porch, the gutter won't be covered by the drip edge at the low end. Tin roof with about 1.5" overhang. The drip edge hangs down about 3" and because of the gutter hangers, I can only shove it behind the drip edge a small amount. How do you rectify this. The gutter looks too low but it may work anyways... I guess I'll see when it rains.

I have a question, I bent out some drip edge for a customer and kinda mangled it up doing it because it was so tight up against the building I couldnt get the gutter in behind it but in the end I got it up behind the drip edge, now I got a call back from him saying his drip edge was destroyed, and all this other stuff about how it was gonna rot out his fascia board, but the drip edge was bent out almost to the middle of the gutter, now if I’m correct? The drip edge is only to divert the water from going behind the gutter, so being that the drip edge was over top of the back of the gutter, how would it rot out his fascia board?? and he’s asking a certain amount back to replace his drip edge....? Is it supposed to be tight like that? Does it matter if there’s space between the gutter and drip edge ? Sorry for so many questions, I’m just stunned that he thinks he needs to replace all that, when it looked fine more less.... thanks

If the over hang on the shingles is good, ya really don't need to worry about putting the gutter under drip edge. Now if the over hang is super short which I've ran into a lot then yes it needs to go under it.

This drip edge/gutter issue has been my problem since the day I installed the gutters. My question is, "shouldn't the gutters be hung closer to the roof edge. Just seems like, if I go behind and under the drip edge, now I am 2" under the roofing overhang. I havent bent out my drip edge yet, but was gonna try to rehang my gutters up closer to the roofing. Also, if I bend out the drip edge, the hanger clips that are on the back of the vinyl gutters are in the way. So why not remove the hangers and screw thru the back of gutter, straight into the facia. Then I could hang the gutters up closer to the roofing overhang and bend the metal drip edge out and over the gutter. Wouldn't that be ok?

Drip edge is always recommended! Keeping in mind the purpose of the drip edge is to eliminate water from going behind the gutter to prevent the fascia/soffit from rotting out. Now if NO water is going behind the gutter you can technically get away without having a drip edge for now. When the roof is replaced in the future just note then to have the drip edge added!

I pull all the drip edge up as I measure. W/e installed that were in a hurry n just didn't care. Sometimes there is steel drip edge and ya have to use a flat bar to pry it up. I been doing gutters professionally for 25 years. I can cut my own slanted endcaps too. Ya know if there is an angle on the wall and a reg end cap wont work. Gotta cut that angle and make it work. Easy as hell tbh. I also get paid by the foot. If your doing this job and getting salary or hour pay , you're getting fked by your boss. Gutter is all I know pretty much.

Dude i asked the guy that did my roof and he said no the drip edge doesn't come out ... i literally asked him hey i have water going behind my brand new gutters... im like is the drip edge supposed to come out a little and he said no ... i smh and said okie dokie ill have to figure something else out so i started looking on here and your 1st video i watched said exactly what I thought... thanks man i really hope your right because im going to do what you said

In looking at our roof, it appears that the roof singles extend 2" out beyond the fascia board. Don't see a drip edge unless it's under the singles? What to do?

I think you are ok..the 2 inch shingle hang should guide the water directly into the gutter..i have about a inch and a half of shingle over hang...jus got new gutters and affordable gutters here in Port Angeles WA said i wont get any water behind gutter!

Your good. Thats how roof shingles should be installed. The ones on video are flush with the drip edge and fascia.

Install drip edge and cut back shingles no more than 3/4 in over hang of shingles

Ladder tip # 1... one foot away from building for every four foot of ladder height. That ladder is on a 45 degree angle lol.

Wally Berg I think that with the way the roofing standoff attachment (the yellow bracket with foam rollers) is made, the pitch of the roof doesn't give much in the way of a choice. It was the first thing I noticed, but the shingle and gutter protector sticks off the ladder at about a 90° angle.

Ok..love your vids man..wish my gutter installer was as pro as you..first of all..when he installed..they where pitch waay lower then my old one ..so more of my fescia was exposed..he didnt recomend and drip edge..he jus installed and left quick.. payed him the next day.. So there was no drip edge to begin with..first time it rained..it was a hard rain..and i had water behind the gutter onto fescia lots..err! He said he pitched low due to the angle of a 1974 built house for good water flow..ok..well my old gutters flowed good not as good as new gutters..but maybe quarter inch of standing water in some spots..so i buy drip edge..seems to help a little..but only in light to moderate rain..not heavy..nope..drips behind..iam thinking water big water drops when it rains hard is hitting bottom of gutter and splashing up under drip edge and rolling down fescia..my drip edge is not official drip edge its flashing shaped like drip edge..idk..iam guessing the gap between the drip flashing and back of gutter is about a inch..enough for water to splash through? Wish i could post pics..ur thoughts? Oh and he said he can re hang the gutter up high flush with roof line..for a fee!! But iam thinken u should of given me options on how high or low to pitch and if a bit of standing water bothers me...see my point? Thank you! He jus seems like one of these dudes with a gutter machine..i feel like i could of done the same. Idk

Slide a piece of sheet metal up behind the drip edge and over the front of the top of the gutter make screws long enough to rest on gutter hangers that way you don't have to use screws

Um..try using gutter hangers without the screws already attached. This way u can hang the gutter up and bend the eave metal. Also, this way you dont hav to deform the eave metal.

My opinion - either use gutter or drip edge, no need for both! If you want a good pitch on your gutter for drainage, it's a bitch to find the gutter hanger (to screw it in) when pulling the gutter up behind drip edge. Also the drip edge will not allow the gutter to be pulled up since it will hit the hanger first. The closer the gutter to the shingle the more likely water will enter the gutter. I have a metal roof with steel drip edge. Steel drip edge does not bend. Alternatively you can mark and snip where the hangers are if you have that much time. Had I known I couldn't pull the gutter up bc of the drip edge, I would've never installed the drip edge. Now I see the facia above and below the gutter and it looks like crap. Looks like the water could even overshoot the gutter its so low on the downspout end. I would only install gutter OR drip edge, not both.

I know this is really late, but here's my 2¢. If possible, install the gutters first, being mindful of where the drip-edge will go. Then, drip-edge, then shingles. From that point forward, installing new gutters will never be a problem, as the room for your gutter already exists behind the drip-edge.

Yes and makes shit a lot easier. Usually the roofers install the drip edge. But ya really don't need it. Only time u need drip edge is when the over hang on your roof is short. If its an inch or more rock n roll that shit. A lot of these new homes the builder uses Ice And Water Shield as well as drip edge.

Vincent Nutt generally no, the drip edge is nailed under the starter shingle and installed by the roofer. An attempt to place it after the installation of the gutter will almost certainly result in a broken starter set (shingle) or the inability to physically attach the drip edge to the roof
