Hey guest, a philosopher of science is a philosopher, not a scientist. I did find an essay that explained some of Aristotle's actual experiments though. Well, he did one experiment, at least. Obviously, he's known for philosophy, not for science. I just found this story informative. He argued against the contemporaneous idea that saltwater is the natural state of water. Instead arguing that saltwater is made up of more fundamental substances, one of them being fresh water. So, apparently he did some filtration and distillation experiments. That said, he didn't invent distillation or filtration, so I assume people had already been experimenting with those things for a long time.
@SalivatingSteve
@SalivatingSteve Ай бұрын
Who we’d call scientists today were historically referred to as “natural philosophers” (physics) mathematicians, naturalists (geology ie Lewis & Clark), doctors/physicians (biology), astrologers (astronomy), alchemists (chemistry), etc. Each branch of science has its own old school names throughout history. Also a caveman could easily observe the dry salt crystals leftover after a pool of salt water evaporates. Our ancient ancestors were pretty smart and don’t get enough credit from people today.

When talking about being repeatable, it doesn't mean that you have to repeat the observed action. It means that you repeat the analysis of the data.
@SalivatingSteve
@SalivatingSteve Ай бұрын
Exactly and you can refine your theory with further observations and more datapoints. For instance the modern theory of plate tectonics, which builds upon the earlier theory of continental drift. Just like how general relativity improves upon newtons gravity.
@dansmith7009
@dansmith7009 Ай бұрын
Yep, repeating the observation is not the same thing as repeating the action. For example, I’m certain that none of these clowns would argue that observatories doing spectrographic analysis of stars to calculate red shift isn’t science. But we aren’t making any new stars lol. Same thing, finding a fossil is an observation. Predicting what kinds of terrain and features of fossils will be found in that terrain and at what depth and predicting a ratio of parent to daughter elements of radioactive material will be found nearby, and then finding those things, is repeating the observation.

If you go to a school of higher learning like Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Princeton, or Stanford to study molecular biology, do you think it will be based on Evolution or intelligent design/creationism? People who reject the science of evolution…and yes they reject it on religious grounds…should not be allowed medical care beyond the anointing of oil, prayer, and the laying on of hands.

The ignorance is strong with this one. "Francis Bacon outlined the scientific method in his 1620 treatise, Novum Organum. In doing so, Bacon introduced the scientific method to European thinkers at the height of the Scientific Revolution, influencing the likes of Galileo and Isaac Newton, who put the method into practice in their works". Aristotle is said to be the first to combine empirical studies with logic. I think there was a way to go after Aristotle, before the scientific method was actually defined.
