Another reason for Mike Myers re-recording his lines with a scottish accent is because his mother used to read fairy tales for him when he was a kid, in a scottish accent, thinking the accent fits a fairy tale.

This ogre is an absolute icon who set the precedent for animated movies to this day. These movies know how to make pop songs and references really work while still keeping a strong emotional core (except in The Third). His impact on animation and my childhood is immeasurable.

It’s really interesting how Shrek and Toy Story’s development stories are very much alike. They both were very different early on, the main characters were unrecognizable from how we know them, and they both could have ended up being disasters. But luckily with some reworking of their stories and their protagonists and perseverance, they ended up being huge sensations, and two of the most influential animated films of all time. They are both in my eyes very inspirational stories, and show how if you’re working on something and it doesn’t work, don’t ever give up and have a great team alongside you to make something great.

This is definitely unintentional but while Shrek parodied Disney's fairytales more than anything, I think the character himself (in the movies) works as an anti-Mickey Mouse of sorts. They're both the most iconic animated characters of their companies and have iconic ear designs and serve as underdogs, yet while Mickey is short, cute, cheerful and optimistic, Shrek is big, less conventionally appealing and a little more of a pessimist (but still a good guy). This even works outside their characters:Mickey was a star of many short films and has been an ongoing franchise for nearly a century (though Disney have actually been a bit conservative with him), while Shrek has mostly just been used in his movie quadrilogy. What Mickey advanced in 2D animation, Shrek did (or could be debated to have done) for 3D. Since audience demand toned him down, to this day Disney fears for Mickey's brand image to the point it's arguably done more harm to it and simultaneously keeps him an icon while somewhat alienating him as a character from pop culture, while Shrek thrives on his flaws being celebrated and memes rekindled a genuine love of the ogre by audiences.

I think that the Broadway show is such an underated musical... I think that Shrek's character and personality are so much more explained here than the movie. The musical number "Who'I Be" in my opinion, is the representation of Shrek's true personality and it explains why he can't do any of the stuff he wants to, and he explain everything in this line "An ogre always hide, an ogre's fate is know". Translating, it means that Shrek wants to be a knight, a viking or even a poet. But because of the world jugding him just for his appearance, he is forced to be alone and hide from both society and his own feelings (and thats why Shrek needs Donkey on his side, to free him from his own shell).

What’s my favorite Shrek line? I got to say, in the scene from the first film where they save Fiona and she and Shrek have just met, the line “Well I got to save my ass.” really gets me. The way how Shrek is of course referring to Donkey, but Fiona takes often as she thinks he means saving himself, to me, it’s adult humor done right.

With Shrek being such a universally beloved, landmark film, I really wonder why no bit of footage of either Chris Farley’s version or Mike Myers old voice recordings before he came up with the Scottish accent have been released publicly. I can’t tell if it’s because of legal issues with the families of both actors or if it has to do with them not being proud of the preliminary version of the movie, similar to how Pixar is not proud of the early iteration of Toy Story before Woody was reworked to be more appealing. Just like how with that movie, even a single seen of the early animatics managed to make it to home video, for historical sakes I think it’s important to see some of it officially someday.

I don't know how I'd feel about the next Shrek movie, but I would love to see an expanded universe of Spinoffs with other characters. I've loved what they've done with Puss in Boots so far, didn't see the Saturday Preview of the new movie, but something like that leading up to a new Shrek. Maybe give Donkey a solo adventure or something. As for the original films, I find the fourth one a nice send off to the early era of DWA. The one where they were trying to make more Shrek inspired "edgy" movies, but failed to get the same kind of quality and spirit. It seems to have a tone more like KFP and HTTYD, and there's a distinct lack of fart jokes. While not as grand as the first two, it certainly was a major improvement over the third one. That one felt rushed. It had good concepts, but the execution was sloppy.

I just hope that in the Shrek 5 movie, once Disney buys DreamWorks, all the Official Disney Princes and Princesses from their respective movies appear, especially all the characters from Rise of the Guardians movie, from Frozen movies, from How to Train Your Dragon movies, from Brave movie, from Tangled movie, from Moana movie, from Raya and the Last Dragon movie, from Encanto movie and the most important character in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Melody, the daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, and thus, they will be the new main characters of the Shrek 5 movie so that they help Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, the children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, the children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and the others to defeat Rumpelstiltskin, Death and all the Official Villains of Disney and DreamWorks, as the Evil Queen, Lady Tremaine, Maleficent, Marina del Rey, Ursula, Gaston, Forte, Jafar, Sa'luk, Governor Ratcliffe, Shan Yu, Doctor Facilier, Mother Gothel, Zhan Tiri, Te Kā, Tamatoa, the Red Death, Drago Bludvist, Grimmel the Grimmel, Mor'du, Prince Hans, Pitch Black, the Druun, the Soldiers and Morgana, and to prevent Rumpelstiltskin, Death and the other Official Villains of Disney and DreamWorks from ruling and destroying the kingdom of Princess Fiona and King Artie called Far Far Away, Shrek along with his wife named Princess Fiona will need help from their new friends which are the Official Disney Princes and Princesses, as Prince Florian, Princess Snow White, Prince Charming, Princess Cinderella, Prince Philip, Princess Aurora, Prince Eric, Princess Ariel, Prince Adam, Princess Belle, Prince Aladdín, Princess Jasmine, Prince John Smith, Princess Pocahontas, Prince Li Shang, Princess Fa Mulan, Prince Naveen, Princess Tiana, Prince Flynn Rider, Princess Rapunzel, Maui, Queen Moana Waialiki, Hiccup Haddock, Princess Mérida, Kristoff Bjorgman, Queen Anna, Jack Frost, Princess Elsa, Princess Raya, Princess Mirabel Madrigal and Melody, although in reality, Melody is the first and only that she is not a true Official Disney Princess, because she made her debut in the movie of The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea and it is also because she is the first and only daughter of an Official Disney Princess, but Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany, King Artie, Princess Guinevere, the children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle, and Felicia, the children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and the others also need Melody's help to protect and save their kingdom called Far Far Away away from Rumpelstiltskin, Death and the other Official Villains of Disney and DreamWorks, because she is the daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, but in the Shrek 5 movie, I also want to see the death of Queen Lillian, because since her husband named King Harold passed away in the Shrek 3 movie, she has felt heartbroken and that caused his own death in his kingdom called Far Far Away, and all the inhabitants of Princess Fiona and King Artie's kingdom called Far Far Away are saddened by the death of Queen Lillian, because now she is with her husband named King Harold in heaven, and now they have lost their queen, that means now the kingdom of Far Far Away needs a new queen and King Artie said that his love interest, girlfriend, fiancée and former classmate from Worcestershire school called Princess Guinevere would be the one to be the new Queen of Far Far Away, so King Artie decided to return to his old school called Worcestershire along with Shrek, with his older cousin Princess Fiona, with Donkey, with Dragon, with Puss in Boots, with Kitty Softpaws, with Perrito, with the children of Shrek and Princess Fiona: Fergus, Farkle and Felicia, with the children of Donkey and Dragon: Bananas, Parfait, Peanut, Eclair, Coco and Debbie and with the others to meet again with their friends from their school who are actually Prince Lancelot, Princess Tiffany and their love interest, girlfriend and fiancée Princess Guinevere to take them back to their kingdom called Far Far Away, and in the Shrek 5 movie, I also want to see the romance of all the Official Disney Princes and Princesses from their respective movies, especially the romance of Maui and Queen Moana Waialiki, the romance of Hiccup Haddock and Princess Mérida, the romance of Jack Frost and Princess Elsa, the romance of Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany and the romance of King Artie and Princess Guinevere, because I think in the Shrek 5 movie, Maui will be Queen Moana Waialiki's love interest, boyfriend and fiancé, while Hiccup Haddock will be Princess Mérida's love interest and boyfriend, Princess Tiffany will be Prince Lancelot's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée and Princess Guinevere will be King Artie's love interest, girlfriend and fiancée, because Queen Moana Waialiki is going to fall in love with Maui, Princess Mérida is going to fall in love Hiccup Haddock, Princess Tiffany is going to fall in love with Prince Lancelot and Princess Guinevere is going to fall in love with King Artie, but they don't know how to tell them their feelings towards them and neither how to win their hearts, because every time Queen Moana Waialiki gets too close to Maui when it comes to true love, she gets very nervous with him, while which in the case of Princess Mérida is also the same, because whenever Princess Mérida gets too close to Hiccup Haddock when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous with him, in the case of Princess Tiffany it is also the same, because whenever Princess Tiffany gets too close to Prince Lancelot when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, and in the case of Princess Guinevere too, because every time Princess Guinevere gets too close to King Artie when it comes to true love, she also gets very nervous around him, but luckily for them, Princess Fiona will help Queen Moana Waialiki to win the heart of Maui, also Princess Mérida to win the heart of Hiccup Haddock, also Princess Tiffany to win the heart of Prince Lancelot and also Princess Guinevere to win the heart of King Artie, and I also want that in the Shrek movie 5, Jack Frost will be Princess Elsa's love interest and boyfriend, because Jack Frost leaves fall in love with Princess Elsa, but he doesn't know how to tell her his feelings and how to win her heart, because every time Jack Frost gets too close to Princess Elsa when it comes to true love, he gets very nervous with her, but fortunately for him, Shrek will help Jack Frost to win the heart of Princess Elsa, except Princess Raya and Princess Mirabel Madrigal, because now they will be the only Official Disney Princesses who do not need to have love interests and who can remain single forever, and I also say the same for Melody, the daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, because like Princess Raya and Princess Mirabel Madrigal, she doesn't need a love interest either, but in the Shrek 5 movie, I also want to see the rivalry between King Artie and Queen Anna because they both want to compete in a challenge to see who is the best monarch a of a kingdom, that is, the best ruler of a kingdom, because both want to do what is best for their own kingdom, because King Artie wants to do what is best for his kingdom called Far Far Away because now he is the new King of Far Far and Queen Anna wants to do the best for their kingdom called Arendelle because now she is the new Queen of Arendelle, but at the end of the Shrek 5 movie, King Artie and Queen Anna become best friends in the world, because at the end of the Shrek 5 movie, they both learned from their mistakes that they have made since their challenge to compete to see who is the best monarch of a kingdom, that is, the best ruler of a kingdom, and that at the end of the Shrek 5 movie, King Artie and Princess Guinevere see their first true love kiss and that they become a romantic couple, just like Prince Lancelot and Princess Tiffany, and also that at the end of the Shrek 5 movie, Maui, Hiccup Haddock, Kristoff Bjorgman, Jack Frost, Prince Lancelot and King Artie become the new official members of the Official Disney Princes, while Queen Anna, Princess Elsa, Princess Mirabel Madrigal, Princess Tiffany and Princess Guinevere become the new official members of the Official Disney Princesses and that one day, Princess Tiffany will be the wife of Prince Lancelot and that they have a son and a daughter, that is, a family in the future, and that also Princess Guinevere is the wife of King Artie, that they also have a son and a daughter, that is, a family and that she becomes the new Queen of Far Far Away in the future.

My favorite will be Shrek 2 just cause of the scene where Shrek and others are chained up and Gingy comes to save them. The whole part with Pinocchio talking about wearing woman's underwear. That had me cracking up the whole time and I still enjoy it when it airs on TV. The first one will always be a neat and endearing movie but the 2nd one is my all time favorite. I do have the first 3 soundtracks but I didn't really care for the 4th one. I couldn't get into the whole Shrek not being born like the "It's A Wonderful Life" movie. I still went and saw it in theaters but it just didn't get the first time. It's grown on me a little. I wouldn't mind seeing a whole new installment of movies of Shrek and friends. I'd call it more of a continuation of the franchise then a reboot. If they like Dave has said they want to keep the original voice actors then it's more of just newer stories of the characters then a reboot with a whole new cast. Oh Dave not sure if you knew about it and if you did and just thought it wasn't good enough material for this video I do understand. There was a Christmas album with songs of Shrek and Donkey first Chrsitmas together. It's pretty funny and I love the songs too

Regarding the book, I remember seeing a copy of it when my 6th grade English class was prepping for a poem/short stories assignment. My classmates and I were surprised to learn about said book since it was about a year or two after the first film debuted. Though speaking of its author, I remember reading "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" as a kid, which was an interesting 'be careful what you wish for' type of story that also featured donkeys. As for the movies, the first two were amazing, the third installment was okay, the fourth one was decent, and "Puss in Boots" was a solid spinoff. Heck, I liked some of the products that came with the first movie, especially the 'Ogre-sized' M&Ms. I also really can't wait for "The Last Wish."

Funnily enough, Nicholas Cage did eventually star in another dreamworks franchise. That being the croods. Which worked out so much better in the long run. Still hoping for a 3rd movie someday.

Personally I hope the eventual shrek 5 does bring back the idea of his parents or his side of the family as that’s what the original story would’ve been for the movie if it had released back in 2013. Now that puss in boots the last wish is almost out, anything is possible. I really want to see more of kitty softpaws and the new dog character piretro too. He really is a scene stealer I think!

Great video, just wished you'd mentioned about Donkey's cameo in the NBC series Father of the Pride.

To think of all the things that needed to happen for Mike Meyers to win the role of shrek is to ponder the reality of fate, even as a non-fatalist

The first Shrek film is my favorite. I find myself relating quite a bit to the ogre.

If only a certain youtube critic from the animation community understood Shrek's cultural impact on animated films moving forward.

Rosio's name is pronounced Row-see-oh as it is of italian origins. Also I wonder if Steig isn't prounounced like "steeg" (as in the swedish name Stig).

I did extensive research into how to pronounce Stieg, and took the pronunciation directly from an official documentary produced on him.
