Watching these videos just makes me want to get my Amiga going again! There is just something magical about that old computer... I have got an original Amiga 1200, but these days if I want to play Amiga I get roms for my A500 mini to save on disk swapping, crashes etc. 👍

@@FEEDMEKITTENS There is that sense of uncanny magic when these oldies are played on a real hardware, no doubt about that. Especially going through dozens of mis-labelled disks (and no, that's not sarcasm), discovering what's really on them and having (or not) fun playing these discoveries. This cannot be emulated sadly, and only way of re-experiencing it, is to get a real Amiga and a box of unlabelled or mislabelled disks from a random Ebay sale or something. On the other hand while emulating, you can play any game you want now, as fast as no Amiga could run them, and loading instantly. So, both ways of have their own different appeals.

Finally, an appreciation video about Shadow Fighter. I remember playing many beat'em up's on Amiga: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2, Body Blows (especially Galactix), Shadow Fighter and Super Taekwondo Master. MK was great, MK2 was a bit worse because of disk juggling, Street FIghter 2 was great also but the animation was a bit sluggish compared to arcade version. Body Blows, as you said, had nice graphics, some nice music and... that's it (fun fact: Allister Brimble did soundtrack to both MK1 and Body Blows and there are songs that use the same samples). Then there was Shadow Fighter: a fast paced beat'em up with big character roster (17 playable characters if I remember correctly) and cool music. My favourite character was Cody with his speed punch. Character roster is not only big but also diverse; we can fight with anyone from small Toshio - 12 years old martial arts adept to Kury - mysterious giant. I also played Super Taekwondo Master which was this even faster paced, goofy Polish beat'em up game. Authors of this game used the same trick that was used in Mortal Kombat: they used digitized sequences made by recording real people. The effect was... not as good as in MK but it's still quite fun. BTW OP, are you pl by any chance?

Shadow Fighter is a straight up very good fighter. If it released on any other system, it would've been as good. So, I'm not saying it's good cause it landed on the Amiga. It just was. Was it the best? It's difficult to say, but easily in the top 3-5. For me at least. And yeah, Body Blows just blows. xD Super Taekwondo Master is actually quite fun if you forgive it being very very generic. No explosive specials, not fireballs, just martial arts. That said, it doesn't compare to another awesome basic martial arts game - Panza Kick Boxing. Which I actually consider to be the best fighter on the Amiga. I know, not many share the sentiment. xD And yes, I'm Polish. :) Also, love your videos!
@melomonster007
@melomonster007 6 ай бұрын
@@OldAndNewVideoGames I liked Super Taekwondo Master BECAUSE it didn't had any fireballs and whatnot. It was a game where you fought people which you wouldn't like to have met in a dark alley. Plus it had some nice animated intro, nice punk rock music and VERY nice ending music. Panza Kick Boxing, now that's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time... It's another great fighter game, slower but requiring more precision. Kind of like International Karate + which is another great Amiga beat'em up. There are a lot of others fighters for Amiga like Elfmania (for me it kind of have same problem that Body Blows has, nice graphics, nice music but I just don't buy the concept of cute elves fighting), Brutal Paws of Fury was ok I guess, I didn't enjoy Full Contact because it required too much of both precision and reflex and I have yet to play Capital Punishment.
@OldAndNewVideoGames
@OldAndNewVideoGames 6 ай бұрын
@@melomonster007 I did some top10 when this channel started and Panza was my number 1 fighter on the Amiga. I bet many would disagree but for me, even if I haven't played it as much as the others, more flashy ones, was the best. I think it was because I could actually enjoy the single player in it more. It offered basic progression, you could exchange and learn new moves, it was fun. In 2-player, I'd go for anything else really. Well, other than the Dangerous Streets or Body Blows, or Elfmania for that matter too. Though I would use Elfmania as a show off piece. Brutal Paws of Fury I have mixed feelings about. Cause I remember sucking at it but enjoying it thoroughly, and then for years reading about it being $hit. So, I'm a bit disillusioned about it, and can't really tell how I should feel without replaying it. And it's not happening as I've too many videos to work on. ;) Capital Punishment tried too much in my opinion. It was not inherently bad, it's kinda good actually, but I always felt that it is because "it tried" and not because it just was. I don't know if it makes sense, but that's how I feel. Oh, and Shaq Fu, similar thing as with BPoF, I'd have to replay it to reform my opinion about it. xD

Again, some of these are nostalgic even though I've never seen them before. Especially Metal Kombat. There's something Commodore 64 about it. Not the graphics, but the "I bet can make a game!" clunkiness, freedom from genre conventions, and naive concepts of things like what a cool battle robot should look like from a time when Darleks and Short Circuit were more ubiquitous. Really takes me back.

Ha ha ha :) I bet I can make a game approach is actually what we did few years back, when I worked in a small company making games for Android and iOS. We've made maybe five, if I'm not wrong, and sixth was basically ready when the company shut down. And the first two were absolute garbage. They did prove that we could. And the next two were pretty decent. None are available anywhere and I'm not sure that the main programmer has any of the source code anymore. But yeah, we went for it same way some of the C64 garage coders did.

I always wonder why people consider Pole Walki as a strategy, while it really is a top down Scorch. If not for the missiles destroying any idea of balance, the game would be quite fun to play against people.
@OldAndNewVideoGames
@OldAndNewVideoGames 6 ай бұрын
Probably same reason why "Worms" is being called that. So, cause there's no real better fitting generic genre to assign it to. Sure, we could create one from few subgenres and it would more accurate, but I suppose it's just easier to say "strategy", and assume people will get that you don't mean moving armies but rather careful planning. That sort of thing. I think.

Concerning Polish Amiga games - there was a period of time in the 90's where while Amiga was losing it's popularity in the Western Europe, in Poland it was still owned by a lot people who didn't felt like parting with their 500s, 600s and 1200s, who considered pc their mortal enemy and switching to pc would have felt as an ultimate betrayal to them and who thought that Amiga is still a capable computer. The latter people were sometimes programmers who either tried their hand at making computer games or programmed demos with impressive audiovisual effects. All that caused a wave of Polish games (some well polished some not) on Amiga somewhere between 1994 and 1998. Most of them we're craps or poorly executed ripoffs but there were few games that gained some acclaim like Cytadela - one of many efforts to make FPP game for Amiga, Behind Iron Gate - same but without textured graphics, Teenagent - a first Polish point and click adventure game or Franko: The Crazy Revenge - beat'em up in Final Fight style.

Or at least at the very top. :)

If I'm seeing this right, Pole Walki seems to do something I haven't seen in other 2d turn based tactical games, in that firing is done via a Scorched Earth-like angle+power along a 2d side-view plane based on a read of the terrain in a line between the two units? That's kind of interesting, although probably one of those things that could make it hard to enjoy when playing against AI.
@OldAndNewVideoGames

Let's just say that there's a reason why Pole Walki was rather obscure. xD
@FromWitchSide
@FromWitchSide 6 ай бұрын
There was an issue with AI, but I do not remember the specifics. However you could just wipe it using manually (mouse) controlled missiles which broke the balance. Certainly this game was made for multiplayer, there isn't really any story or real campaign with missions. I never considered it to be a strategy, rather just top down Scorch with tactical elements. Unfortunately it was hard to find someone who knew the game and would like to play it, not something where friends can just come and play it right away.

I'm lucky enough to have A500, though I feel that the disk drive may be on its last legs. I'd love the A600 for the sexy looks of it and upgradeability. But it's not gonna happen. They're just too expensive. And while I am full time employed I get it, trust me, prices of the classic hardware are just ridiculous and I wouldn't recommend spending on them unless someone has a lot of disposable money. The best Amiga is a PC though, so any, even an older one, can easily emulate super fast Amigas with ease.
