I have the Exedy Twin in my EVO and the first 3 months I was surprised by the clutch chatter when I was at a stop light with cars on each side. The clutch is much quieter now and I have gotten used to it. The only thing I need to get better at is making sure I don’t change gears until the clutch is fully engaged. The Exedy Twin is a great clutch.

I had an Exedy twin in my EVO for about 8 years before I sold the car. The car only made probably 330 wheel. The chatter is very minimal and eventually went away but it did take a long time to smooth out. Thousands and thousands of miles.A friend helped me move and had to move the car. He didn't have a ton of manual experience but he remarked that it was much easier to drive than he expected. I can't say enough good stuff about the Exedy. I also "Trained" myself in the same way you talked about. I do the same thing in my FRS and my new EVO with a single but as soon as it's time to replace the "New" VIII clutch I'm going back with the Exedy just because it's a known solution and it's an expensive experiment. Also pulling an EVO transmission is such a PITA.

Good to hear from someone who has had the exedy clutch for that long. Will you run the act monoloc collar when you switch back the exedy twin in your current VIII?
@WTFNoNamesLeft2
@WTFNoNamesLeft2 2 жыл бұрын
@@BoostedFilms I ran it for a couple years without the monoloc without issue BUT when I broke the t-case I went ahead with the monoloc when I put it back together. I have to say the monoloc was pretty hard to install actually. The part it makes more difficult is when you go to pop the fork and TOB into the monoloc. The diameter on the little fingers on the monoloc must be a TINY bit bigger than the stock ring clip. I never did take it apart again after installing that but I was always worried I would have trouble getting the fork back and TOB off the clutch disk (the part where you put a screwdriver up into the inspection hole). I bought another EVO a couple years back and it's currently up with SpeedAcademy but once I get it back, if I have clutch issues I'll probably try a stock retainer clip and hope for the best. IF it pops even once I'm going to order another monoloc.

Thanks for the insights Paul; I'm currently on the ACT HDSS single/street/sprung - JW if you have had any experience with that one and how it compares - noted your comment on even @ stock power you would take a twin vs single and was hoping you might be able to expand on that a bit. I haven't had great success with launches on the HDSS and may be looking for an upgrade/replacement in the future on a DD pump gas/stock turbo evo 9 for context. Thanks bro - appreciate the vids either way, you are the man!

Hello. I do have experience with the ACT HDSS single disc. That is the clutch I had in my black evo before i swapped it for the exedy twin. To the best of my recollection, the single disc ACT HDSS was one the heaviest pedals feel clutches. But it worked well for me with no real issues. I launched it at the drag strip just fine. What issues are you having with launching it? If you switch to a twin, you should have a little longer window to slip the clutch.

@@BoostedFilms Thanks for the insights and comments Paul! Based on your experience I will need to chalk this one up as user error on my part. The prior HDSS on an 04 STI had a lower engagement point with a more precise feel where it would grab (albeit with a heavier pedal) compared to the HDSS on an 06 MR. I've already bled and removed the clutch restrictor so it's probably just a difference between platforms. Thanks again for the response and appreciate all your tutorials and walk throughs!

I've had both exedy twin and triple disc, the triple felt more like stock it's really light but had lots of chatter when you press the clutch in also have a dog box too lol exedy twin is hard to press in and also the travel is long , also yes the act is like stock too I would buy the twin but I'd get triple exedy myself for more power hope this helps anyone!

I read all the forums for twin disc reviews, I found issues with older exedy twin discs, so I looked elsewhere, the ACT isn't really available over here in Au so I found a place that sold ORC 659s which I installed myself and never looked back, no chatter, stock feel, rattles a bit but built evo therefore don't care, gives it character

I had the EXACT same experience. ACT 6 to Exedy twin. Exedy was a revelation compared to the single disk ACT. I think the ACT model I have was an HDS6 but that's from memory. It was the HD PP with the sprung 6 puck disk. It was awful. The Twins are really the way to go on an EVO. (No experience with a triple, could be better or worse I don't know)

Nice review, very helpful. What's the power output for both these cars. Was a Exedy OEM stock clutch no good?

They Black evo dynoed at about 430hp and the silver was at like 390hp. A stock single disc clutch would not last too long at higher power/torque levels after too many launches.

I just recently got another evo and I need a clutch and I want to go twin disc and I just recently saw that ACT had released a twin disc and I’m always will to be a test dummy for car stuff. I know the track record of exedy and how well they work for launching the car and that was the main reason I was leaning towards exedy but if you end up launching the silver evo. Please make a video about it I would like to know your opinion on it

Have you had any issue with your ACT Mod Twin clutch? I only had put 3k miles on mine and it shit the bed on me and started locking me out every gear while stationary. Took it apart the anti-rattle clips broke off and have bad heat spots. Also looked on the forums it was a known common issue.

Yeah I was making the comments as i was watching. But yes I contacted ACT and had the techs overlook it. “The flywheel was resurfaced. The discs were relined with new friction material. The floater and face were replaced under warranty.” They just shipped it out back to me I have not received it yet. I’ve heard ppl would drill out the anti rattle clips. I would like to ask ACT personally what would be the best option so this does not occur again. Evo was only driven 3 k or less with fresh rebuilt tcase /trans by RRT . I have a Evo 9 it has a chatter when I have the clutch engaged not as loud when not engaged I don't know what clutch is in it however I was told it has a twin clutch I've also been told the chatting could be the throw out bearing I have learned similar driving habits to drive my Evo like you so it doesn't shutter how could I find out what I have in my car without taking the trans off or is that the only way
@BoostedFilms

You should be able look under the car and remove the rubber grommet on the trans. Shine a light into the hole and you should be able to get an idea of what clutch it has. (use jack stands if you need to lift with a floor jack!)
