I would strongly advise leaving exterior teak unvarnished. It can look after itself without any special treatment. Untreated teak cockpit seats and soles are also far kinder to bare feet and are very slip resistant. Do remember when cleaning to use salt rather than fresh water as fresh water left lying will stain the teak. Whatever you do if sanding teak do so ACROSS the grain, sanding along the grain regularly will ruin the wood leaving it almost corrugated. If the teak becomes stained mix up a mild oxalic acid solution, apply with a cloth or paint brush (use rubber gloves !) allow it work for 15 minutes or so - this will take out the stain and also brighten up the teak without any harm. An oxalic acid solution will also lift rust stains out of fibreglass and remove yellowing around the waterline, just remember to rise off thoroughly after use.
@1425race3 жыл бұрын
Oxalic acid is amazing stuff. You can use it at various strengths to remove rust stains from almost anything including clothes. I use it mixed with glycerine to treat varroa mites in my beehives. I suspect if you will find it in the ingredients list on many brandname cleaners.
@stevejones97883 жыл бұрын
And don't waste money buying the marine teak cleaners. You can buy powder really cheaply by the pound . I use 2oz to the gallon to clean teak. It also removes rust stains off paintwork !

As a professional pilot, I admire your courage to walk away. I can’t imagine, with all it takes to become a pilot, quitting for another passion. I must admit, since COVID, flying, eating in restaurants and staying in hotels, is not as fun as it once was. The best parts of my day are when I’m strapped in that cockpit. The rest, just isn’t what it used to be. For that, I say congrats. I will continue to watch your channel, as I really enjoy the both of you. Good luck and God Bless. ~Lance~

My husband and I love watching you both. Your living my husbands dream. He came to Florida with the idea to live on a sailboat, until he met me. Met at age 40 still working ok now were 66 and 69 married 23 years to old to sail. So we do have a 5th wheel. But it's not like sailing. I get sea sick. He gave it up for me. My recipe for cleaning canvas: ¾ cup of bleach ¼ cup of a mild laundry soap (Deft works well) Mix into one gallon of water. Apply to canvas using a sponge with a nylon net on it (like bug sponge) or a medium bristle brush. Need to be gentle around the thread. Air Dry. The bleach is key here. It will kill the mildew.

Dont need to remove the old varnish, scuff sand it with 220 sandpaper it will look white, dont worry it will be clear when new varnish is applied, that way the next coat of varnish will adhere, knock off the loose stuff, apply more varnish, remember to scuff it between coats if it dries. Thats how we keep 12 coats of varnish on, minimum of 6,and it adds to its character. Darkened wood would need sanding or it will remain dark, if its been exposed a long time it may need a coat of oil, wipe excess, let dry for a week, then sand the wood a little and varnish, varnish doesnt last long down here, my methodology

Here is my take at the propane regulator. Close the tank first, second open all valves then close all valves. Finally open the tank valve a tiny bit and close it again. Repeat this process many times. The idea is to increase the pressure inside the regulator very slowly, I would say over a minute. The regulator has a membrane and the different pressure on each side is what makes it work opening the tank valve to fast messes things up. By the way make sure the jet on the burners are clean, use a needle to open it up if plugged. Hope this helps!

Love your videos and been watching for a while and first time writing For the mold on the canvas, try soft scrub soap with bleach, it is cheap and works great and easy to get. You can use it straight without a water mix and then use clean water to wash the soap off. This stuff helps protect the canvas too from future growth. For the BBQ, get a copper cooking matt. It will keep your grille clean and stops the oil and grease from dripping into the bottom pan and saves the grille and from clogging up the burner and control of the gas. I would also recommend connecting a hose from your main propane tank and not use the little cans. Looking forward to see your future adventures, keep then coming

Adjust the air on the burner and that white flame should go away. I had to add a separate valve to lower the heat because the factory valves are set to high. You can buy a inline valve that is very small at a good hardware store. I can now turn our bbq. Down where there's hardly a blue flame showing.

I've watched a number of cruisers who peel labels before getting back to their boat. And with a Sharpee write on any cans what it was. Paper labels often will house bugs of many varieties, so I have been lead to believe... Seems like an easy way to help reduce the 'little' critter population on your boat. Also noting that cans left in the bilge will rust if they get wet/damp and you could lose that identifier, so frequent rotation is suggested.

First a quick clean with muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) with appropriate precautions, then 1500 and 2000 grit sand paper, rubbing compound, and finally a good polishing wax. It will be interesting to see your hurricane experience. We are up the Hudson and needed to move out of the marina we had spent the last month in doing an electronics refit post lightning-strike. This marina is in Catskill Creek and 10 years ago every marina on the Creek got wiped out by Irene when floodwater rushed out of the Catskill Mountians. So we left last night and anchored out on the Hudson River. There are a handful of other boats weathering the rain and so-far light winds out here as Henri is headed right at us dumping inches and inches of rain. Hope you guys are safe too. Fair winds.

I'm with Valerie on this, been wood working for 40 odd years and I love using recycled Teak and it needs oil or varnish to protect it
@svbarryduckworth6283 жыл бұрын
What destroys teak is sanding and cleaning. Throw a little oil like real tung oil on it a few times a year and it will outlast the boat. Hopefully the teak on this boat was glued and not screwed and bunged. Sanding often makes the bungs so thin they pop right out. Then you have real trouble. Teak decks are killed by kindness -not by neglect. Never Sand them, never wash with a pressure washer. That takes years off of their life. The dark grey is just discoloration caused by oxidation of the oils on the surface. Washing it off is stripping a layer right off of it. It is kust as bad as sanding -worse because it pulls more of the softer material from in between the grains. Once the grains start to form ridges and valleys then more surface area is exposed and the wood ages faster.
