I don't know, dude. When you're using the Switch Axe, and you're smashing a downed monster with sword mode, you latch onto its head and ride it while unloading all of your element into it until a final explosion, it's incredibly satisfying and I turn into a prehistoric ape every time it happens.

Personally I just smack in sword mode on the monster until like 1-2 seconds before it gets up, then I Zero Sum Discharge onto it for max amount of damage on a downed monster, because the end of the Discharge will knock you back quite a bit, even if you let go early. Always go for sword mode for damage pretty much, especially on downed monsters.

Glaive player checking in here, and this has always bothered me. Don’t get me wrong-I was drawn towards the weapon by the appeal of the flying dance, just like everyone else. But there’s so much more to the weapon. People want to complain about its aerial attacks not doing enough damage, but it literally had 2 aerial moves in the base game. Glaive has such a complex and interesting grounded combo tree that can actually deal massive amounts of sustained damage, especially given that the weapon’s range and speed allows it to keep up a near endless onslaught, almost always able to reach the target weak point. The vault is useful for so much more than mashing b (or square, or right click). Vault + aerial evade gives a huge amount of mobility and access to a dodging style unlike any other weapon, since you’re able to go over many otherwise deadly and difficult to avoid attacks. The falling spin was buffed in Iceborne-while it used to cap out at 3 hits on most normal-sized monsters in the base game, the added hitboxes in Iceborne allow it to easily go up to 6. That’s 6 hits of mounting damage, any time, anywhere. It’s not the hardest hitter in terms of mount, but just like its grounded dps, it’s all about keeping up a sustained onslaught. People seem to have this black-and-white mindset when looking at glaive, where you have to either play grounded glaive, which is inferior to longsword, or aerial glaive, which is inferior to, uh... skill. It’s so limiting. The weapon’s potential truly unlocks when you’re able to find a balance between utilizing its different styles together. This is further cemented by the new glaive bomb in Iceborne, which I’m personally super happy about. It gives the option for a damaging aerial finisher in an instance where you don’t need to build mount, and goes straight into your heavy damage grounded finishers (triple slash -> tornado slash). It even goes so far as to set up a mark so you can start scattering kinsect dust for free blast, para, poison, etc. It’s not the highest dps weapon. I’m never going to argue that. But the insect glaive has so much damage, mobility, and utility all at once, all wrapped into a unique technical playstyle not quite like any other weapon. TL;DR: Glaive has good damage and reach on the ground, good mobility and utility in the air. You don’t need to choose one or the other. Use them both.

Thank you I use the aerial combat for big monsters that cause ground blights (Val, Teostra) and try to seamlessly go from doing ground attacks to jumping and tying to mount to trying to break a part to applying my Kinect so I can get a blast prock the only thing that ever makes me stop is stamina or my sharpness

Also, this isn't even mentioning the new Kinsect boost mechanic that buffs your exract duration (if your glaive's boost is Spirit & Strength, I think), blunt Kinsects can be used with Slugger or even w/out skills to ko monsters, sever Kinsects can cut tails in a single combo with partbreaker, AND running Flinch Free 3 with triple extract grants earplugs 3, wind res 3, AND tremor res 3! The utility of the Glaive is rivaled only by Sword and Shield

Lance main here: I too was once ignorant of this weapon, very much so, until I saw a stream of a 15 year lance main...that changed everything for me and I've been playing it ever since. Just like HH mains will also tell you, all weapons are meant to be played aggressively, but this is why Lance is godlike...because you're always going to have the best of both worlds. The key to the weapon IMO are the hop attacks, because you can attack then move WHILE GUARDING and reposition in this beautiful dance of both attack and defense. I'm no speedrunner or anything like that, but back when I mastered the weapon I did get a DPS mod to see if the weapon was really that bad at dmg. Not only was I almost always on top of dmg, but I also did a friendly competition with a buddy who was using a bow, against Nergi, and even if he used the bow wall attack spam a lot in the nergi spawn area, at the end I was still ahead in dmg, because while he had to stop attacking to either regain stamina or just...not die...I never stopped the offence. I know that doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things and dmg lists etc, but for me it was more then enough. I agree that they should have given the weapon more love...more flashy moves...but it's still IMO an amazing weapon. P.s. I highly disagree about the GS being good for beginners and the SnS being bad for them. I think Capcom did it right, ranking the GS as a hard to use weapon, but I've rambled enough.

Derrick Hayden I had to learn the lance when I couldn’t get enough MHW and bough Generations for my 3ds, the one without a 2nd joystick... I tried using my main hammer but couldnt turn to hit the monsters lol so I jumped around all the weapons till I reached the Lance and Gunlance and the hopping mechanic was perfect! I wish I could hop like with my hammer, you can really sneak into the best spots, and as you say, it becomes a dance of death!

I've only used the lance since starting mhw and even now in iceborne. I've played several other mh games and the lance has always been my favorite. Always tanking always in the middle of the action and always dealing damage. If you want more damage bring the right Lance and make sure you're taking advantage of every opportunity to poke. The lance might not have the best dps but it can be very damaging because of its ability to keep you on top (or underneath I guess) of the monster, safe and dealing pretty much constant damage. I don't even use guard or guard up and so far the only thing I haven't been able to solo is behemoth. I haven't gotten all the way through iceborn yet but let's face it. Soloing behemoth without having maxed out overkill equipment is pretty rough and it just feels like it's meant to be a full on multi-player battle. I might have to throw together a guard/guard up build to see I'd it even helps me much but seeing as I've never used it and the lances guard has never been an issue for me I think I'll keep my current builds.

@Derrick Hayden I remember when hearing Gaijin Hunter explain about the evade with the Lance and I was like "WHAT? Shouldn't you block?" lol, then showed me how to play aggressively with the Lance like dancing and stabbing around the monster and only blocking if needed, that moment I understood I had no real clue about the game and started to watch streamers like Canta to learn to play

I mean, it even says on the weapon description: It's a weapon that lets you keep on assaulting. Even in MHW Lances were great and kept up with other weapons just because good lancer could just stay in a fight, and poke away relentlessy. Now, with the guard hop having sideways versions and the clutch counter, lance is in such great place. You get to be more flashier while softening up some spots, move in and reposition with ease. Not to mention the defense boost skill rework means if you end up surviving ALL attacks incase you mistime counter or run out of guard. Now, add in super recovery or "life steal" and you might end up using no pots at all and the only pause in poking is when you need to sharpen

I currently main Insect Glaive and I feel there is alot of utility that people over look. A lot of people don't know the kinsect follows you when you do the aerial dive attack and will pierce through the monster doing multiple hits along the way. Also you can clutch claw while mid air onto the monster which is useful. I'm running a poison build right now with a blunt damage kinsect so its kind of a hybrid build. Damage is a lot less bursty than other weapons but it can keep the pressure on the monster due to its mobility. On the slower monsters I will spam my kinsect at their legs and sometimes I will get them to trip when they are trying to run away.

Same with the hammer. With the ham you have to know both the terrain and monsters attack patterns. With ham there's 4 way of using it. The ground level (you perform your basic moves on level ground), cliff/edge tactic where you basically can do the infinite jump attack combo, the off the wall spinning move (some walls and pillars allow for this move) and finally the sliding spinning move when there's slopes. So an effective ham user has to use the terrain accordingly. That's a lot to learn. Plus you can't block moves like the GS can. I'm going to say HH is the hardest from my experience lol.

@@nikolasbartell2194 that is because most of the youtubers guide out there make its looks like this, also, they need a different mind set to play, since most weapon, the mobility comes with you walking normally, and lance, if you want to be mobile, you basically hop and/or run, and don't walk lances are actually one of the most aggressive, mobile, and quick weapons out there, if you know how to use it. (didn't play ice born yet) and you don't really need any guard skill like people like to say, I attack so much, and so quick with it, that sharpness is annoying for me, I normally sharp my weapon 2 times more than I see other players that plays with me (remember that you don't need to sheath your weapon to sharp in world, so I never see why people see sheath speed of lance a problem, only if you do a lot of mistakes with it and need to heal than it start to be a problem) also, block is reactive, you shouldn't be with your shield up all the time, you block, do a counter if possible, and keep poking, different of other weapons, you NEVER get out of the monster hide, you will be always there, poking like a mad man, they try to run? you will be there to poke it to its death

Well, one thing I partially figured out is to the whole "why" CapCom advertises them as a beginner weapon You can get by with just hacking away at the enemy when you don't really know what you are doing. You may not be doing great, but you'll at least get the monster downed sooner or later. You have both blunt and cut damage - sometimes within the same combo even - which gives you a nice middle ground in terms of damage, while getting some utility blocking and quick use of items. Important here - Items: Not just food and potions: Traps, Slinger Ammo (Flash/Screamer/Dung), Bombs and atk/def buffing items, which are commonly used across the board. Some weapons sheath quickly, correct, but in the midst of battle, even quickly sheathing items might not be fast enough, SnS can more or less guarantee your item goes off. For many people, MHW was the first real Monster Hunter game they ever played and I'm fairly certain they are more used to fast paced hack and slasher games and the likes. Remember that the earlier MH games used to be a crawl in both progression and game pacing, when hunts regularly took a while, if only for all the loading screens in between areas :p

Ok, I had to react after watching the IG part...A weapon doing less damage doesn't mean it's stricly inferior. It just means it deals less damage, and damage is not the only way to play MHW. There are so many things IG can do that DB and LS cannot do, like mounts (both DB and LS are on the low end regarding mounts), and it deals good elemental damage/ailments like DB but with higher reach like LS. Now, I'll say that I do understand that damage is important, for part breaks, flinches, and yes, killing. But imho, and that is where I strongly disagree with what seems to be TheGameconomist stance, what I've noticed is that you only need to reach certain damage tresholds to be effective, and it also depends on your individual skill level. This is especially true in multiplayer where the number one cause of failure in a quest is reaching the max number of carts, NOT the time limit. I never, ever had any problems with monsters with the standard Wex+Crit Boost+Master's touch+high affinity, and the rest into defensive skills. And yes, I said high affinity, not 100%. 80+% affinity is comfortable enough for most hunts, and finishing the minute of a hunt on blue sharpness has never gotten me killed (if that ever happens). You can argue that higher damage is also CC, and while it is true, in my experience, you still get more CC with a para weapon than a meta weapon, provided you build enough offense. To sum it up, yes, you CC less through sheer damage, but not that much, and you gain more opportunity window through hard CC. And I'm not even touching the psychological aspect of things, where when I land a para, I enabled a "feel good" moment for all my teamates, moreso than if I were doing 20% more damage. Is it more effective, damage-wise? Dunno, it's really too variable, but I've never heard anyone complaining about a mount or a sleep. On the contrary, people tend to be upset when said windows are wasted, like waiking up a sleeping monster or flashing a mount, even if pausing to set up bombs, or for the mount to succeed is a loss of time. Overall, what I find highly questionable is the push towards more balance in TheGameconomist videos. "But more balance is good!" Not always, if all weapons had the same move speed, the same sheathing speed, the same damage, even, then why have 14 of them? "But some weapons are used only by 1% of the players!" Doesn't necessarily mean they suck or need buffs. As long as you have a portion of the playerbase that enjoys the weapon for what it is, then it doesn't need to drastically change. I never encountered a Lance main that said "ho, if only we had innate Guard or Guard Up". No, they're most likely to tell you "ho, I use Guard up for this fight, but not for this fight, because you can Power Guard that move...I also have that awesome evade build, or this counter build for this monster". On the other hand, what I do hear is people like TheGameconomist that are saying "man, I tried Lance, and it really needs Guard Up, if it had it, I'd maybe (but probably not) use it more". Yes, I"m talking about Perfect Imbalance here, and it's all the more relevant to MHW because : 1/ It's a PVE game. It's not about being the best, it's about reaching a certain goal. You can strive to do it in the most efficient way, and I am in awe when watching speedruns, or even a pure dps run, but you can also enjoy some creative freedom and still reach the goal. 2/ Performance floor for ALL the weapons is satisfying. You could argue that some weapons are stricly superior in specific fields, and that all fields are not equally important and you'd be right. Damage IS king in MHW, that's for sure. But CC is queen, and is not that lower behind, and I could also talk about support and resilience, how they have a place in the game, maybe not prevalent, maybe with a lower ceiling than damage, but a place nonetheless. There are successful speedruns with every single weapon, they are ALL loved, they all have depth thanks to years of developpment, and there is no weapon that is considered "the worse" by the community, despite some vocal opinions. Shield weapons are not designed to block everything. IG is not designed to be Airborne all the time. This is just not what they're meant to be, and implementing these changes would make them more effective, but less complex, and imho interesting to play. Ask for more damage, for numerical adjustment if you want. Core changes should be weighted with a little more caution.

Good points. I would like to add that, for me, the value of insect glaive is being able to freely deal damage to monster while perhaps no one else is able. The aerial attacks can sometimes feel like very cheesy damage to certain monster while they are on an enrage in a group hunt. Being able to get a mount while doing that is icing on the cake. Being able to proc a status effect while doing that is great, too. You're not meant to deal the most damage in air, but sometimes being in air on certain monsters if you know them is actually a safe way to deal damage and then also get the mount. Typically if a monster is enranged I will unleash a series of aerial attacks and land the mount. That's to me what it's for, and the art is picking which enrage it's time for a mount because you only get two. Mixing ground with air attacks can also inflict constant damage where most melee weapons may not be able to. To me, it's a DPS support weapon, not a pure DPS weapon.

As an Insect Glaive main I agree, I'd also like to add, with the addition of clutch claw my options opened up SO MUCH. Even disregarding elemental damage, my DPS has skyrocketed as now when I finish with some sort of combo and I know the monster is going to attack, I can roll out and then clutch claw, do damage, fall, then continue doing damage, I feel like new I'm just constantly doing damage which is great for Para but lds because I'm ALWAYS building up that element. Also I feel the dive bomb attack is underappriciated by a LOT. The landing attack does a pretty decent amount of damage, not to mention a really safe way to land the marker for the insect, not to mention it ALSO combos into the last hits of light attack and heavy, or backspin. Overall I feel like the insect glaive is better than base world.... But still not as glorious as my GU IG.... My sweet sweet Gen ultimate IG... Oh the sweet sweet damage you do...

This comment sums up why I don't really watch Gameeconomist's videos. His push for "perfect balance" makes no sense in a game as complex as MH. Especially when considering it's a co-op game. It's not like Destiny or some other fps crap where the Hunting Horn has to be balanced to fight a Great Sword directly. They both fill different roles, and things like HH and Insect Glaive can (as you put perfectly) do so much more than damage, thus making their lower damage output a mute point to anyone who actually knows the weapon. GameEconomist strikes me as the kinda guy who tries a weapon, doesn't like it's playstyle, and then decides that b/c he didn't like playing with it, it needs changes. Instead of just using other weapons like an intelligent player would. I fucking hate HBG. I tried to learn it, but I couldn't manage all the ammo types and didn't like the way reloads work, or how element ammo works... so I decided not to use it. If I was this guy, I would've used it and decided that they need to let me have a permanent element on the gun, and that the gun should let me reload while moving or something. I just don't like how this guy thinks, it promotes a "meta game" mentality where different playstyles and roles matter less than just having every weapon be able to keep up with the DPS of a great sword.
@cale0176

This is all super accurate. I feel like the AT fights pushed out a kind of toxic-lite DPS focused meta. I've never felt pressured to keep up my personal DPS or switch weapons due to feeling like I'm not contributing in another MH game before. It wasn't until a hunting buddy commented on how well I stick to a monster with an IG that it clicked again that it's a weapon that doesn't care about doing big damage as much as it cares about doing damage as constantly as possible, and heavily rewards stylized/varied play with insane mobility while retaining more or less full damage potential. I'd consider it to be the most flowing of the weapons, and lets me stick to a monster no matter where the fight moves across an arena.

As a Lance main, I kinda took offence to his belittling of the movement of the weapon. It's true we're slow to an extent and our sheathing time is one of the longest, but that's the point - we don't need to sheath ever! Stick long enough with the lance and instead of hops, you'll be guard advancing towards/away from monsters. Throw on a challenger mantle and counter all the attacks a monster throws at you while maintaining dps on the monster, you'll rack up just the same amount of dps as the "mid-tier" weapons. Precision pokes make for more criticals and breaks part easier. Lance is always the first pick I use when going against a new monster just because of it's adaptability.

As a SnS main, I feel as though he didn't give SnS enough 'justice'. For the other weapons, especially bowguns. He gave them far more 'hype' and love. As a SnS main, I can tell you it's all to satisfying to get the perfect rush down on a monster that's either down or stunned. Seeing those HUGE numbers pop up so damn quickly is beautiful and i've able to beat alot of other users in terms of damage when the safi event was up. Such as when he was talking about how using items as SnS isn't as 'good' as it seems since it already has a fast sheathe time. But that's not only the point. You can literally get RIGHT back into the fight with SnS seeing as you don't need to unsheathe. As well as popping seeds or might pills for that extra bit of damage since I know the pills only last a few seconds on a PR (Perfect rush). And honestly, the 'shield bash' method was getting a bit stale. So with the perfect rush added ANOTHER option to the SnS gameplay that I love. Now I either shield slam, Shield bash, or perfect rush for crazy damage depending on the situation. Even the cl And dodge clutch claw grab is beautiful simply because other weapons CAN be too slow in the middle of a fight to weaken a part. Or you may get hit off right before you see the effect actually come through. With the SnS, there's been alot of times where it happened almost INSTANTLY when I even began the animation after the dodge, which is beautiful on it's own since you can get knocked almost right after, and still have that softened weak point. Although he couldn't have said 'all' of this in his short summary. He could've given SnS, as well as other weapons more love. Though, he did say he didn't spend as much time with him as possible, hence why he gave bowgun more love. But, i feel as though people watching this won't really get to truly appreciate the power and flow of the SnS. While they'll be more tailored to lean towards..well..bowguns. So over all, i'd give his review a 8/10~ Still a good review, if not a bit..bias.

All of this. I only started getting *really* into SnS in Generations (only played until I beat low rank cuz I was bumbed about the lack of g rank) but I mained it for the main portion of World and Iceborne. I switched to Bow for world's endgame and I've switched back to an IG main (4U boi) for Iceborne's endgame. But even so I absolutely adore SnS and it's unmatched utility, ESPECIALLY running support. I and many MH veterans will tell you SnS is the best weapon to start because you can use items easily, sheathe and unsheathe are super quick, and it attacks quick and has a block for emergencies. I couldn't tell you how many times that dinky little shield actually saved me from Nerg's divebomb or Namielle's totally awesome lightning steam nova. The more you play SnS the more you realise how many tools you have at your disposal. I currently run with brute tigrex head. tigrex arms and legs, and blackveil chest and waist to get me free meal 3 and speed eating 3 plus wide range 5 charm. *Nobody on my team has a chance to cart* outside of one shots and item usage is so quick it hardly hurts my damage output. I recommend this set to any SnS main and wide range can easily be swapped for anything you might prefer.

Falling Bash combo + Perfect Rush on a downed monster's weak spot could reach over 3k (i have seen it reached 3600). You can build for max DPS while healing the team with lifepowders. One thing about the Lance Counter Claw attack: when you mount a monster using it, you have a small invulnerability window that you don't get with any other weapon, which means that you can ALWAYS get your soften hits and flinch shots off, as opposed to how it's possible to get knocked off with other weapons. Something to consider when calling the lance changes weak.

Great video! Just wanted to mention that, although this is not a moveset change, the greatsword actually has gotten a surprisingly substantial change that you did not mention. The greatsword's true charged slash received a buff/rework which changes the True Charged Slash to True Charged Slash (Power) if you land the first smaller hit on anything before landing the massive final hit. The regular TCS has a motion value of 233 and the TCS(P) has a motion value of 286. This is actually a massive difference in overall damage and landing the first hit of TCS is now extremely important and should be done everytime (except when doing a wake up attack). Anyways, again, great video. Just wanted to clarify.

Here’s a tip I found out myself in case other gunlancers haven’t figured out yet, the left trigger triangle + circle (idk what it would be for other consoles but it loads the slinger amp into the wyrmstake) spam the traingle+circle again and it will shove the wyrmstake blast forward, if it connects with a monster it will plant the blast on them. I feel it’s much better than doing the full combo for the sake of landing the wyrmstake blast on a monster that moves around way too much

@Barry indeed it is more of a high commitment move and I can understand the inconvenience lol, but it really feels way better to hang onto the slinger ammo and time it right instead of loading it and hoping you connect a full combo on the more mobile monsters like velkhana nargacuga etc. Otherwise failing a full combo results into having to pick up the slinger ammo dropped from the miss and re loading to try and time it again lol. By no means am I saying do it this way, we all learn our own little play style as we play and I just wanted to throw this out there for those that didnt know in case they too found themselves in a similar boat as I do trying to connect a full wyrmstake combo for the purpose of planting the wyrmstake blast

SnS main here, the biggest thing I can recommend it for is if you’re having trouble deciding between weapons, since it does a bit of everything. It can do good raw damage, but it attacks fast so elemental and ailments are also options. It deals both slash damage to sever tails and the like and blunt damage to KO. You can block with your shield if you aren’t confident you can dodge (granted, not quite as well as the Lance and the like). It has some charge attacks. It can mount well. Does it do any of those things as well as more specialized weapons? Not really, but it can do them all, as is the price of versatility. Mounting specifically I think is something a lot of players don’t value enough. Getting a mount should essentially be a guaranteed knockdown in most situations, which your team can translate into loads of damage and is one of those often forgotten utility benefits some weapons bring. Also, while I agree SnS isn’t the easiest thing to use perfectly, I’d say it’s by far the most forgiving weapon for beginners, and especially early on it’s easy to do “good enough” with the weapon. Its fast attacks make its commitment super low, blocking weapons are great if you aren’t confident in your dodging skills, the fast sheath and fast movement while unsheathed means poor positioning is less punished, using items while unsheathed is a nice bonus. Lastly, and I think this is the most important bit about being a good beginner weapon, you can change your attack direction mid-combo. This is huge. Most weapons need to stop attacking entirely to reposition if the monster moves or they overshoot the monster in the middle of a combo, but the SnS lets you adjust on the fly while staying on the offence.

(PC Lance Main): I really like the new additions to the lance, and here's why... 1) The guard shot stance is actually really strong tactically (but probably not in terms of speedrunning). The guard shot has a much higher knockback resistance, so with guard 5 you are practically immovable. It is one of the few slinger burst shots that you can aim and fire at will. 2) The counter claw is really neat and has some extra properties over the standard clutch claw. The regular counter-thrust can be canceled into the claw counter, so it's available very quickly or can simply extend your counter window. The counter claw latches you onto the *specific part* of the monster that attacked you, has possibly unlimited reach (i.e. fly across the arena to follow a charging monster), and you actually gain resistance to being knocked off the monster, so you can all but guarantee the weapon attack happens to create that weakpoint. 3) The power guard change is just kind of... fluff. If the guard up activated immediately upon dropping into power guard, I would feel better about it. Having said that, most "unblockable" moves in the game have a pretty long windup so... if you react well, you could probably make solid use of it. 43:50 To hear you say they might as well remove the clutch claw counter made me smh a bit lol

Hey TGC: The dive attack for the insect glaive, is the strongest attack you can make with it and it's a very complex upgrade for IG mains. It does very high damage when it lands, your Kinsect pierces through the monster and continues to attack = more damage. And it's not only a good way to reposition while dealing damage as you mentioned. I love your content and watch everything you upload, so please don't hate me, but your IG skills are pretty beta and not good enough to just underestimate that weapon based on it's speed run potential. Maybe they can buff the damage, maybe have the kinsect be more involved with certain combos (maybe an upgrade that lets you use a kinsect like a wedge beetle) I often joke that the #1 thing I want to see in worlds is the ability to fire my kinsect out of my slinger. Also, I just can't agree with the statement that the lance has limited mobility, nor that it is a defensive weapon. Between all the hops, Guard Dashes and Charge, it has some of the best repositioning in the game. You can KO a monster, you can mount the monster without a ledge, you can cut tails, you soften monster parts and drop slinger ammo, and have the option of flinch shot. No other weapon has this amount of versatility. It's currently the best mounting weapon in the game as well. Throw on the Riders charm, and either use the sliding attacks are find a wall run up for the most satisfying and effective wall run attack. I still think the IG is very different from other ground weapons because when you get flying monsters that troll you in the air you may as well arial attack them then until they either get knocked down, get mounted or naturally come down. You don’t need to stop doing damage is the point. Also arial is just as good for dodging many attacks as it is for attacking itself. When Velkhana’s ice beam is moving slowly across the screen I can just hover over it and towards him into either a mount or ground combos. The vaulting and arial aspect is good for quickly getting to monsters so that you can ground combo them. You’re never going to be able to do very high damage with arial attacks because not every hit is going to hit the monster. It’s just additional DPS and the option to never have to stop dishing DPS. Also I feel the attack high on an IG. You may not be dishing the biggest numbers, but you’re hotting very fast and average numbers dished out quickly can be better than big numbers dished out slower.
@Tengila

That's how I feel too. Sure, IG may not have the biggest numbers, but it can keep the pressure up more than any other melee weapon. If you know hat you're doing with the IG, the only times you stop attacking is when you renew your Kinsect and sharpen your weapon. The rest is all attack uptime. It has utility and unparalleled mobility. It has _flow._ I think a lot of MH youtubers just don't _get_ the IG. They try it, see the low damage numbers and leave, not staying long enough to realise that the numbers _don't stop coming_ if you do it right.

My easy explanation of CB i wrote in a Reddit post Think of the charge blade as a rule of three. You can charge the phials. Then shield, then blade. It takes three inputs of triangle + circle to use the ultimate move and other combos are done in threes for the most part. You gain three skills from charging the sword(minds eye) charging the shield and hitting a guard point (guard 1) anddd your shield thrust(triangle+circle two times) use impact damage (slugger). In conclusion watch a video but this is how i broke it down to my friend when he switched from bow.

The S&S perfect rush doesn't favour raw builds, it's the opposite. Raw builds work great with the falling shield bash since the shield doesn't do elemental damage, with the perfect rush you mostly do sword strikes. It does nearly the same damage if you don't use an element, but out damages the falling shield bash if you use an element the monster is weak to as long as you got the timing right. Small thing on the Iai spirit smash, it does I-frame the enemy move if you time it right, but it doesn't prevent the damage that move does like foresight slash does. You just don't get knocked over. I think it's an important detail to mention as it might cause a lot of frustration when people cart trough it.

Wow the insect glaive section is just- No you don’t know what you’re talking about man. The amount of utility and mechanics it forces you to master outscales the low damage it deals. The descending thrust is a blunt damage with a Kinsect pierce follow up, so yeah, it actually deals more damage than you would know. The Kinsect is also a great way to deal more damage, don’t underestimate Weakness Exploit on Kinsect, you clearly don’t know how easy it is to break parts with it. The reason it has such low damage is the same as Dual Blades, both have more strikes to deal than other weapons. Timing, moveset reading and stamina play are the core of insect glaive, which are also the core of the game. If you can learn these skills, you can be untouchable simply of how well you know how to move and manipulate your hitbox. So disappointing.

Asking to remove Lance counter attack because it can't react to non-physical attacks is a bit ridiculous, there is nothing wrong with it being tailored to counter physical attacks specifically, and as a matter of fact the counter-clutch claw of the Lance is the most powerful clutching attack in the entire game since the monster can't shake you off, this makes it quite balanced, it literally has Rocksteady mantle effect built into it. You do in fact (as expected from anything resembling Rocksteady) take a bit of damage in the process but that's almost always negligible in return for getting a guaranteed tenderizing attack, or even guaranteed flinch attack if the monster isn't enraged and you quickly move to the monster's head immediately after the clutch counter. Also aerial Insect Glaive is almost always more effective overall versus large slow monsters, Deviljho, Kulve Taroth, Xeno'jiiva, Safi'jiiva and almost all Elder Dragons (many of which have very large wings with weak points in them like Lunastra), for example you can literally avoid 90% of Velkhana's attacks and keep her wings tendered for the whole fight if you use arieal IG + aerial clutch claw consistently. Meanwhile areial IG is far less effective aganist small or fast monsters like Odogaron, Kirin and Rajang.

@@craigfunk3453 But even then how would that work!?, most counters in the game maybe with the exception of Guard Points SAED counter can only counter close range attack effectively, if a monster shoots a fireball at you from 20 meters away how is the Lance counter supposed to work then!? I think it makes sense for it to only counter melee attacks because that guarantees the monster is close enough for the clutch to latch on to it, and it all balances out with the fact that the counter lance clutch claw has Rocksteady built-in.

@craigfunk3453 4 жыл бұрын
@@AscendantStoic I'm not saying go insane and allow the counter to work at long range. But if something like Teostra does his blast powder explosion right next to his body you could counter that as it's right next to the target you want to counter. Sure. Most non physical attacks from monster are ranged (and usually outside the clutch claw's reach) but I'm just saying those that are kept close to the monster and thus inside the claw's reach of a monster could be countered
@AscendantStoic
@AscendantStoic 4 жыл бұрын
@@craigfunk3453 Fair enough, but that would make it a bit OP since it already has a couple of advantages compared to other counters:- 1-If the counter doesn't trigger it's still a block. 2-It has built-in Rocksteady. 3-Its timing window is very forgiving compared to other counters. 4-When triggered guarantees a tenderizing or a flinch attack if monster isn't enraged.

You did not mention the fact that SA got buffed A TON. Now it gets a Fade Slash in Axe mode that does quite a lot of damage and it's good por repositioning. Also, when the Axe is powered up, it's easier to break parts, flinch and trip the monsters. One more thing, if you manage to charge the Sword just before the power up, you can do an Elemental Discharge into a Latch with the Clutch Claw and follow up with a Zero Sum Discharge WITHOUT losing sharpness and Sword charge. I would recommend watching Jinx Jinx and Tuna's video on it.

The new aerial thrust does a good amount of damage, and there's many opportunity you can use it and dodge through the air and thrust down the from above monster. Mostly the monster would be flinched or knocked down because the high damage.... and that felt so good hahaha. especially if you dodge in the air using the 'airboost or something[press X or dodge in the air]' and manage to land the aerial thrust. satisfying xD

Fade slash on switch axe is not limited to just transforming the switch axe. Fade slash can be used after almost any non-heavy axe attack. You can also fade slash during the wild axe swing combo if you have slinger ammo. Switch axe is now incredibly mobile if you learn to use fade slash often to reposition and avoid monster attacks. Remember to also use your flinch shots to keep the monster from moving too much.

The Lance’s counterclaw move can only counter physical moves because how it works it you basically parry the monster’s blow, hooking the monster with the claw as it passes, it’s a melee claw. You can’t hook on a passing monster if said monster is on the other side of the area blasting fire at you. It would be weird if a counterclaw a Kirin’s lighting bolt and just teleport onto it 20 meters away.

the lance counter claw makes sense. when the counter activates you are not shooting out the claw, you are latching the claw onto the part as the attack knocks you away so you reel yourself back in. the slinger burst from behind the shield is useful dependent on the ammo type(i.e. using a thorn pod burst on the monsters head and then continuing to poke it will k.o. the monster)

Talking about skills needed for weapons while the title suggests it focuses literally on only each of the weapons' new moves, but it doesn't, which is why it's like twice longer than it needed to be.

With the buffs to SnS it's quite powerful now, maybe the melee weapon with most DPS in the game.

Achyut Dwivedi top tier and high sustain but dbs and sa win over sns for sustained dps. Burst is cb and gs.

@@Azsnas DBs are debatable but how is SA even close?

Achyut Dwivedi Jinx had gone over this. SA with axe mode has the highest potential dps. Even more so in multi with the “swing through ally explosion dmg buff”. DBs win if using true crit and weakness to monster. This all also depends on monster match up and familirity with movesets. SNS is probably one of the easiest to use hard to master weapons with pretty easy to get to high dps but I would rank it 2nd behind dbs and 3rd if SA user is good. Just my opinion though.

@@Azsnas Jinx did that analysis before the SnS buff though. Again, even if SA has high sustainable damage potential, it's not realistic at all. Realistically SnS and DBs are far above SA in speedrun times, with SnS catching up to DBs times even when there aren't many SnS speedrunners. I still believe SnS is the best melee weapon right now without going through the complexity of weapons like CB, GS or LS.

Everyone says Charge Blade is the most complicated weapon, but I disagree. It sounds complicated on paper, but it's fairly simple when in use. Just keep up the charge, store phials and use them. The main "complex" aspect of it is the build, as it requires a bit more than others, but once you have a good enough build it becomes a breeze. Decent defense and insane damage coupled with good mobility and range, it's very versatile. Its biggest drawback is its slow sheath speed, making it less compatible with a Wide Range build.

Just a tip for using Hunting Horn, play it aggressively.

Completely agree, a good hunting horn player is doing damage while buffing players with the songs he used to damage the monster with in the first place.
