Wow! That sure looked like a Civil War uniform? Why would a Frenchman travel to the US to enlist in the war or vise versa , Why would a famous American leave his country and move to some remote area of France? I don’t understand. If he was an American Brigadier General for the Union Army maybe his ancestors were all Polish or French, hence possibly after Lincoln’s assassination he just returned to Europe.

Usually the rich or noble families planned their houses like that : kitchen, breakfast room , big dining room , salong for dessert and coffee for ladies , smoking-cognac/other drinks after dinner room for men, in big castles also neccessary - ballroom , and library-office they were all placed on the ground floor. Second floor used to be for family members and babysitters . There also could be study and playroom for kids . The third floor was usually for people that worked for them : butler, roommaid , cleaning and laundry women, cook and service att meals. Just helping you to understand. Fascinating visit. You know, governments seem to love making laws and more laws! Why not make a law that if the heirs can’t agree or there isn’t enough money to keep these large historical homes in good repair ,or there are no heirs that they get turned over to an historical society. We’ve been to the Charles A. Lindbergh home here in Minnesota, a Southern plantation, the James Hill mansion ( he was a railroad tycoon), the Glensheen Mansion in Duluth,Mn. You take a tour and that helps raise money for the upkeep along with wherever else the money comes from. I know at Lindbergh’s home and Glensheen they sell books .ect. Many books at Glensheen about Elizabeth Congdon , aged mining heiress, and her nurse murdered there in June 1977. It is speculated her adopted daughter was the one who planned the murder. Goggle Glensheen murder and/or mansion and you can read about it. The mansion is set facing Lake Superior and the grounds are lovely! Stay safe and looking forward to your next adventure!👍🏻👍🏻

Did you ever notice that celebrities can buy anything their heart desires, travel anywhere and yet, many are plagued with drug/alcohol addiction, depression and failed relationships? Could it be that they can't deal with the incongruity of having the world at their fingertips, but they still feel an empty feeling inside? Your videos are amazing and I love watching them!..but one thing your videos highlight, is that we spend our whole lives gathering beautiful items in our wonderful homes, but at the end of our lives, all of it will most likely be left behind to decay. The joy from earthly treasures is only temporary for the only treasure that will last is the word of God (bible) and a relationship with the eternal God. When we realize we need Jesus and we need the forgiveness that He died to offer to us, that is when we will have true peace. When we follow Jesus, that emptiness inside all of us, will be filled by the Holy Spirit..then we will have treasures that will last beyond the grave. Thank you for your wonderful videos!

@@sarahbartlett1196 I grew up in a broken home, my dad was an alcoholic who eventually left us, and he took the only family car with him. I know what it is to be poor, for after my dad left, I watched my mom sink into depression and go down to 98lbs while struggling to work at a very strenuous factory job to keep us from going homeless. My mom went on to have another failed marriage and my dad married 3 times. What I meant to highlight in my post when bringing up the affluence of celebrities isn't that they don't work hard or they don't have deal with stress. It's just that most people like to believe that having almost unlimited money would help relieve most of the stress that would normally tempt people to abuse alcohol/drugs. It really must be maddening for people who get that kind of money, to find out they still don't have peace. What really is missing in all our lives, is God. The bible says, "For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son(Jesus), so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16. If we confess our sins and we believe Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins in our place, then we will know peace...even if our home is a cardboard box on the street. It won't make our problems go away, but what we will have is God to help us. God brings a peace beyond all understanding and that is worth more than all the riches in the world.

An exceptional video, Leslie! There are so many intriguing things in this property - excellent comments below about the connection with the Pleyel piano, and Fréderic Chopin. Can I add something about L'Illustration, the magazine that you found copies of all over the house? It was a subscription publication; first printed in 1843; and it had illustrations, not just words - following the liberation of the press in France in 1830, the concept was to rival the British 'Illustrated London News'. It was a magazine format, financially supported by advertisements (at the front & back, never interfering with the articles). In 1859, you may like to know, it was sold to a businessman in Amsterdam! But he sold it the next year back to a French family, name of Marc - and in 1904 they sold it to another family, named Baschet. They developed it as a more 'art' related publication. I don't think there is any reason to think that the house in the video was anything to do with them. You subscribe to a magazine, and you keep the back copies! But - they are traded now on E-Bay . Shame that the ones you found are just rotting away . . . The 'Japanese dragon' cabinet you showed us was, I think, actually Chinese - the carving of the wood (not just the dragon in the brass-work) looks like zitan carving from the Qing Dynasty, 18th century. "Worth a bob or two", as we Brits say. Just for the record, not a criticism, 'Vif-Lent' on the stove is not a brand name - it is just a setting for the air control lever 'Lively - Slow'. Love the piano music background . . . .

this is not a castle at all. it is a mansion, in English. Maybe a chateau in french but maybe not.

I began watching you and your brother record all this beautiful architectural history two weeks ago. After binge watching, I have worked my way back to three years ago! My sister, who recently asked if you and your brother Jordy ( sorry if the spelling is wrong) were twins, is who told me about Brothers of Decay. When I told her I need my "fix" of a new episode of Brothers of Decay, because I love architecture and how it is filmed by you and Jordy, she texted me that this episode was just loaded. Yay!😎💕😍

Just for info, the long 'psychiatrist couches' are called 'chaise longues' - they showed off ladies' dresses beautifully, whether they fainted or not! The garish paint downstairs looks 70's to me, perhaps when some kind of commune lived there? Perhaps they were the last inhabitants. Creepy but brilliant!

the victoirans also used garish paint, and some is poisonous!

The servants bedrooms were often right above the kitchen & so they would have warmth coming up from the kitchen. Also in winter they would warm a brick in the range & wrap it in a bit of old blanket & take it to bed to keep them warm.

Good point but these weren't 😮

@@BrosOfDecay Guess they would have used bricks then. Which work very well. I have used one.
