Before he was a god, Talos was the brainchild of 3 individuals: a young (breto-)Nord named Hjalti, an Ancient Nord Zombie Ghost King named Wulfharth, and later on an Imperial Battlemage named Zurin Arctus. Hjalti was Dragonborn, and after being proclaimed as such by the Greybeards, attracted the attention of Wulfharth. Wulfharth saw in him a vessel he could use to once again gain sway in the world of mortals and take revenge on his hated merethic enemies, most notably the Dunmer. So he lent Hjalti his power, essentially acting as a guardian aura that amplified Hjalti's skills and thu'um to incredible levels extremely quickly. Southwestern Skyrim was plagued by war with the Cyrods at this time. A Colovian warlord named Cuhlecain was in the middle of a campaign to gain. Hjalti was soon given command of Cuhlecain's forces, and the legend of General Talos began to spread. This is the beginning of the concept that would later become a god. A man who others think is a man but is actually more than one man. Now with the benefits of fame and notoriety, Hjalti began to attract the attention of other powerful figures of the time. One of them was Cuhlecain's. battlemage, Zurin Arctus. There isn't a whole lot formally written about the relationship between Hjalti, Arctus, and Wulfharth, but it's pretty safe to assume that before long Arctus was let in on the secret of the reality behind General Talos and how he could manage to be larger-than-life. Cuhlecain's forces won the war in Skyrim largely due to his invincible superhero general and eventually managed to take the Imperial City and consolidate all Cyrodiil under the banner of the man who would later come to be known as Emperor Zero. The campaign was over for now, but this was only the beginning of the legacy of Talos. Wulfharth had big plans for his protege, Hjalti was ready for anything the world could throw at him, and Arctus was eager to be in on the action, seeing a much more capable potential ruler than the current Emperor he served. Not long into his reign Cuhlecain was assassinated and General Talos was crowned Tiber Septim, Emperor of Cyrodiil. The official story after the fact is that Cuhlecain was assassinated by a Breton Nightblade as vengeance enacted by the High Rock aristocracy for their defeat in the battle for the Reach, and that General Talos' throat was cut while attempting to defend his emperor from the assassin. The apocryphical, and much cooler story, is that the assassination was an orchestrated power play by the three masterminds of the Talos legacy as a way to take control of the Ruby Throne. The part about the throat being cut serves a dual purpose. Not only does it serve to add credibility to the now-named Tiber Septim's innocence, butalso to allow the first real instance of Talos being more than one man. Busy with consolidating and stabilizing his rule over Cyrodiil, Tiber sends Wulfharth to take charge of the campaign to conquer the rest of Skyrim, High Rock, and Hammerfell. Wulfharth masquerades under the guise of the Emperor, but keeps a low profile and does not speak to reveal himself, explained away by the throat-slitting story. Regardless, this still leads to situations where the Emperor appears to be in more than one place at the same time, which further adds to the legendary mystique of Talos and his superhuman abilities. Anyway, once the lands of men are conquered and under the Imperial Banner, it's time for Wulfharth to go after what his eye has been set on since the First Era, and the whole reason he lent his power to Hjalti and Arctus in the first place: Morrowind. Both Tiber and Arctus are hesitant to indulge him however, unsure of whether they can truly stand against the power of ALMSIVI. Wulfharth is persistent however, tempting the Emperor with promises both of Vvardenfel's rich ebony reserves and that the power of the Tribunal once they're vanquished can be repurposed to aid in the taking of Alinor, a seemingly insurmountable target Tiber had never even had a plan to defeat. The original plan was for Arctus to act as a diplomatic emissary towards the High Elven Dominion and simply form a treaty of nonaggression. But Wulfharth wanted the blood of elves, and Septim wanted the blood of Lorkhan, and so the invasion of Morrowind began. But it didn't end as the Underking wanted it to. Afterfighting to a standstill with their armies, Tiber and Vivec decide to settle matters personally. It's anyone's guess as to what crazy shit actually went down in their encounter, but it ended with an Armistice. Morrowind kept its sovereignty as a client state of the Empire, payed tribute to Cyrodiil in the form of access to the ebony mines, and the Tribunal lived on as rulers of their domain. This made Wulfharth furious. The whole reason he involved himself in this affair to begin with was to obliterate the elves, and now his minions have subverted his wishes and gone behind his back to ally with his ancient enemies. He withdraws all the power he had previously been using to aid Tiber and Talos is now just one man with a wise and powerful advisor, the dynamic duo of Septim and Arctus. But here a temporary third player entersthe stage: Vivec, and he has a complete game-changer. See, Numidium's been sitting around in Morrowind this whole time and he hasn't had much use for it. So he offers it to his new ally as a show of good faith to use as he will. With the Brass God of the Dwemer on the table, suddenly Alinor doesn't seem so out of reach. Perhaps an Empire will finally rule all of Tamriel after all. The only thing left that they need is a way to power it, but the Heart of Lorkhan is off-limits. Arctus comes up with an alternative though. The soul of a Shezzarine should act as a viable substitute for the purpose they want to serve. And wouldn't you know it, he's got just the guy in mind. He designs a special soul gem dubbed the Mantella large enough to contain Wulfharth's soul. All that's left is to place the bait and set the trap. Tiber Septim calls Wulfharth to the Imperial City once again, claiming he's reconsidered and wishes to beg forgiveness and conquer the Dunmer in earnest. Wulfharth bites. When the trap is sprung and their intentions to soultrap him become clear, Wulfharth flies into a rage. Arctus succeeds in casting the spell, but Wulfharth blasts him into ash at the same time. They obliterate each other and their souls intermingle, Wulfharth going into the mantella and Arctus mixing with his ashen remains, what's left of him becoming the new Underking. The Emperor is the only one of the trio behind the Talos brainchild left standing, says "Well that worked out well for me," takes his prize and fits it into the Numidium. And this is where the power of the Divine first comes into play.When Tiber Septim powers up the Numidum with the Mantella, the souls inside it merge with the own part of himself he gives to it. The Numidium sees the history of Talos, this myth comprised of three individuals working together to create something greater than themselves, an illusion more powerful than any one man could ever hope to be. But the Numidium is not concerned with such trivial things as the limitations of reality. It takes all the things about Talos that had previously just been a story and realizes them, beaming them into the Emperor. Tiber Septim is no longer just himself. He sees the world in triple parallax, twice-dimensionalized upon his former point of view. Controlling his robot god, he conquers Alinor, the last obstacle, and gains absolute power. The Red King is now on the path to godhood. With nowar left to wage, he can now focus on improving the lives of his new subjects. He achieves CHIM. He reshapes Cyrodiil. He rules the Empire in an unprecedented age of prosperity for another 40 years, living to be over a century. The imprint the Three-Headed Emperor leaves on the Mundus is not one of a mortal man. Numidium saw to that. It took three and merged them into one. It took the illusion of Talos and made it a reality. Talos now presides over the world as a force of sheer power in emulation of the other Divine spirits of myth, not limited by death. There was, however, one loose end that remained. Zurin Arctus was not fully contained or destroyed in the Mantella. His mortal energy and life force was, but his consciousness remained separate and did not merge with Tiber like Ysmir did. Instead, he was bound to the now vacant ash of Wulfharth as an undead scourge, and swore vengeance on the Empire. But that's a story that can be read elsewhere.

I dunno I've always found this part of the lore kinda meh...I feel like it's been a greatly missed opportunity for atleast half of the races and cultures to have unique unequivocal gods that don't so jarringly fit in with the 9 divines of the late 3rd cyrodilic based empire as 1 to 1 counterparts. like take the Yukkodan pantheon and its many, MANY gods, literally there's a god for everything from the smallest of actions to the broadest of Yukkodan concepts and while you could arguably make comparisons with some of the deities in the pantheon attempting to match them to there supposed counterparts in the 9 the fact is the Yokkudan gods don't perfectly align with the 9 on purpose to break up the usual cookie cuttering of religions (looking at you Khajiit gods!) with slightly different spelled names of the same gods was one of the things that stood out for me. I just personally found this to be the weakest and more disappointing parts of the lore, not that I don't mind cultures sharing similar deities as like the OP said it's a neat concept to explore all the numerous ways different cultures interpret a contextualize the possible same gods in new lights or narratives but must EVERY religion on Tamriel have the same 9 or so gods just with slightly different names and roles, I don't think it has to be and it in my opinion ads much needed variety when you can't make easy comparisons of gods from different cultures and pantheons, sure they might have similar spheres or portfolios but the need not be the same characters or stories. *Oh! And for the love of Mara Bethesda, the next time you introduce a new religion can you NOT make them either equivalents to the 9 divines AND the Deadric Princes, Would really appreciate the breaking from tradition. Just try and come up with gods that do NOT perfectly align to these old established ones, make some unique but contextual (as in don't make weird gods just for the sake of weird gods without context ofcourse) for new (why not really?) and or underepresented cultures! (mentioned in lore) And please NO more gods from different pantheons with slightly different spelled names to their counterparts for Arkay's sake! (some can still have deities from respective cultures that share similar traits and roles but just have totally different names please!)*

Love this series. Out of curiosity, though, do you plan to do a video on the Tribunal? I know you touched upon it in both the Dwemer and Dunmer videos but in the latter, iirc, you chose to not refer to Nerevar's most trusted by name, but it's such a big part of the lore that I took it as a possible hint to a more comprehensive look on them later. Could also work by giving each of them a video, as Sotha Sil has his Clockwork City, Vivec has.... a lot, and Almalexia could also be covered, but I'm also not sure what material you consider canon and (forgive me, not much of a lore master) it seems like Kirkbride singlehandedly gave a lot to the lore in that aspect so it all depends...? Plus, it'd be more effort. I digress, though. Anyways, again, love the series. I love the lore of ES so much.

I may be a little late to the discussion, but in the video you mentioned Talos as "deific form of Tiber Septim". That is partially true, for Tiber Septim or Hjalti Early-Beard ("of High Rock", or "of Atmora", accounts vary) as he was originally named, was named "Talos Stormcrown" by his norse companions after the battle of Old Hrol'dan. Talos (the divine) however, is most probably comprised of three people: Ysmir Wulfharth, Zurin Arctus and Tiber Septim. While it's all guessing, since we have no actual sources besides "The Arcturian Heresy" and events of "TES II Daggerfall", this is only most probable theory. Anyway, exact history of those three and the founding of the Third Empire would also be a great material for another video. Not a lot of people actually include mentions of Ysmir and Cuhlecain while talking about Hjalti and the Tiberian wars.

Forgot to add Kirkbride's fanfiction as a source, but then again, he's not a very credible source.
@hannukah44106 жыл бұрын
Also, both Ysmir and Hjalti are believed to be Shezarrines, Arctus may have been one too, which makes Talos (the divine) technically Lorkhan, which is the reason why the Thalmor outlawed his worship after the Great War.

Actually they should be called "The eight and One" (lore friendly as it was the original name of imperial religion.) as Talos, the Ninth of the divines kinda joined in on the party... I was wondering, do you guys have your favourite skyrim deity? If yes which of the eight is it? (I excluded Talos, as he's ol' good Tiber himself and he is not one of the *original* deity. (he is still a god tho, and this comes from Imperial supporter. I hate Thalmor as much as Stormcloaks do, but they just help Thalmor unknowingly.) (Besides if I put him here those darn Stormcloacks would come and the thread would be covered with "Taloses". Or those high-elves would start bitching [goddamn Altmer players, bastards and whatsoever...]) My characters are always devoted either to the Arkay, or Julianos.

I have a question sorry if it sounds stupid i am not the biggest fan of thr elder scrolls but why dp the adra and deadra hate each other from the view of my eyed deadra just seem like the adra but have a little bit more darker history and darker doings vs the adra where they have good histories and there doings teach the races of nirn good but like i said daedra seem the same since they have some good gods also like the god of dawn and dark i believe that's what she is god of i forgot her name
@TheExploringSeries7 жыл бұрын
My Dawn Era video might give a bit more insight, but really they've been on opposite sides since the creation of Nirn, as the Aedra were the ones that gave up their essence to help create the planet, and the Daedra were the ones that didn't.

If the Empire really wanted to stick it to the Thalmor, they could have left it Nine Divines and just replace Talos with Shor. It would fulfill Alessia's own desires and be a spit in the face of the Aldmeri Dominion, but not at all in violation of the White Gold Concordat. It only singles out Talos. It would also have placated the Nords, I'm sure.
@HickoryDickory862 жыл бұрын
@@Super50ldier No, they don't. Not officially, and not even really unofficially. He is acknowledged on paper, in history, but you never see anything about Shezarr in official Imperial religion, and he has no place in the Divines. As it is, he is entirely forgotten and abandoned among the Imperials. But you can just copy and paste what I said, but replace Shor with Shezarr, and my point would still stand. It would be a good move for the Empire to remember an historical deity of Men, it would fulfill a desire of Alessia herself, it would infuriate the Thalmor while not violating the Concordat, and it would likely placate the Nords. And since Skyrim (strangely) has adopted the Empire's pantheon over their own, the Nords there could contextualize it to their own cultural context and worship him as Shor.
@HickoryDickory862 жыл бұрын
@@Super50ldier The Nords still worship Kyne, but do so via her Imperial aspect, Kynareth. But neither the Nords nor the Imperials worship Shor/Shezarr any longer. You may find a few scattered about here and there, but he's mostly forgotten by both groups on the whole, in the main, what have you. Shezarr may have been a major deity of the Nedes once upon a time, ling ago, but with the founding of Alessia's new Imperial pantheon (which is the Eight/Nine Divines), he was set aside and eventually neglected, forgotten. He is not worshioed or venerated in any official capacity and so is not a part of the Imperial pantheon, no matter their history. Because Shezarr/Shor was the God of Men, he was cast aside in favor of a new deity, Akatosh, whom Alessia created by synthesizing the Nordic Alduin with the Elven Auriel. This way, the constituent parts of her new empire, both Man and Mer, could equally be represented by their new chief deity and neither side could lay sole claim to him. She could not elevate Auriel, because he was an exclusively Mer deity. She could not elevate Shezarr, because he was an exclusively Man deity. So, she blended together two different deities from both cultures. After that, Shezarr's cultus among the Nedes and later Imperials continued to wane and dwindle until it died out completely. Either way you slice it, regardless of the Imerpials' history or origins, they have abandoned and forgotten Shezarr.
