People dont even realize how sucked in to the “norm” they are and soul crushing and planet wrecking this “norm” is.. I know I didnt realize this until we pulled out and finally felt freedom. RVing and living minimally saved my life and gave my family unity. The “American Dream” is being sold as the right and best way to live but really, its just a way to control the masses, to keep them working like little worker bees keeping the queen (whoever that might be) nice and fat.

My mother is a hoarder. I am a minimalist. I am 72 and she is 93. So for 72 years, I have dealt with her mess. She has been in a care home for the last three years. I hoped the care home would mean the end of the hoarding. But, she has managed to fill her room to the brim with anything that she can get her hands on. I can't deal with the mess anymore! I understand that hoarding is a mental illness. So sad that she never got the help she needed to deal with letting go of stuff. I am so thankful everyday that somehow my mind works differently.

I feel you! It seems like in my place (northern Italy) and in the social class I come from (medium-low working class), hoarding to a level someone could describe as pathological was totally the cultural norm until a few decades ago. I'm literally talking keeping 15 outworn jackets in a dedicated extra wardrobe, stacking 20-years-old magazines in the attic, owning 3 sets of coffee cups that have never been used, having closets full of plastic bags from stores and so on. I don't dare to describe myself as minimalist yet, but being where I am now means having already gone a huge path.

@@deonaboyle7651 i'm glad it helped. After all, we cannot blame our elders either. I used to be mad at my grandma for literally valuing and loving things much more than people, as in, I was not allowed to play in the garden to prevent me from ruining it, the only time I walked into her living room she warned me not to thread on the carpet (as if it was not what carpets are for), she herself used to cook on a small stove in the basement in order to keep her actual kitchen new and clean. As children they have known hunger, living without a toilet and going barefoot for not being able to afford shoes: no surprise they now bulk-buy and hoard more canned food than the entire family will ever eat, own golden-lined dishes they have never eaten on, buy tons "fancy" stuff they are going to "keep for special occasions" which means they are never going to actually use and so on. I do have two sets of dishes btw, an everyday one and one "for special occasions", but I chose the latter to be dishwasher safe and not frail or too fancy, so that I actually use it anytime I have guests.

Not to the level that you did, but we sold our high end suv, sports car, motorcycles, house, rental house, ALL of the excess (as you mentioned). We paid off all of our debt, then bought a simple house, quit our careers, started a small business, and 8 years later we have maintained this simpler life. We work 3-4 days per week, and spend time together doing things that bring our family closer. That is living life. This video made me break down in tears, when you said "it's not the amount of shoes in your closet," something really hit home. I am reminded of all the pressures around me as a new mother to a 3 month old gorgeous baby girl, from society, even from my own sweet, sweet parents who I adore - all of whom preach "the norm." I have never wanted the norm. I dream about home schooling my baby girl as if it's some far away fantasy because I'm too scared of the conversation that will be had behind my back. I even gave up breastfeeding her at 2 weeks because the people around me were preaching to me that bottle feeding was the way forward - and I'm still not over that. My heart craved a homebirth but the doctors told me it was too risky for a first time mother - yet my baby was delivered so peacefully and I had to share it with a hospital room that I will never return to and can hardly even remember, instead of those of my own home. I've watched hundreds of minimalism videos but hearing you speak here was like the lightbulb moment for me. Doing something different to my parents doesn't mean I don't love them or am intentionally trying to hurt them, and I have gone on too long with a growing resentment that could've been avoided if I just did what was true in my heart. Change is about to happen for me, and it feels so good.

Hi there. I just discovered your channel and I can’t tell you how what you’ve said in this and other videos speaks to me. My husband and I are finishing up our 8 month bus conversion and I’m expecting our second child (also delivering at home) next month. I’m in the process of getting rid of everything that doesn’t fit on our bus and your videos resonate with me. You’re so right it isn’t the stuff but how society tells us to live and how busy we need to be, that makes us have stress and anxiety. I did all that, school, marriage, bought a house in the suburbs, packed it full, and felt overwhelmed and unhappy with my environment. Anyway, thanks for your videos. Living in California many people don’t understand the lifestyle I’m striving for but I’m looking forward to traveling the states meeting like minded people who truly get it. Best to you.

It feels good to let these things go as I’m in the midst of a major life change, and don’t want to start the next chapter of my life burdened with so many “things”. At first I was struggling with what to let go of, until I reversed the process. I was asking what should I get rid of, and I would get overwhelmed and want to hide under the covers. And then I had an aha moment. Now I’m only looking at what I want to keep, and stuff is now flying out the door to give to Habitat for Humanity, or Goodwill. Plus I now look forward to doing this work of lightening up. I’m finding that there’s actually very little that I want to keep, and will most likely go way beyond my goal of 2022 things to give away this year. 💚🌈🌟

I've been living with less for the past two years, I found in 2019 that I wasn't happy with myself or my life, nothing specific, just a general unhappiness with how society wants us to consume more and more and it's just not who I am or who I wanted to be. So I began a slow process of the clearing out things I simply do no need or use. I've changed my entire life, swapped my clothing for a more minimal capsule wardrobe of recycled and sustainable items, changed the way my family eats and shops, even my children got on board and started to clear out their unwanted items. We spent more time outdoors and I decided to change the way I work to a more simplified level of self employment which allows me more freedom and I choose when and how I work, so no 9-5 and no being told when I can or can't take time off. I cannot express the absolute freedom and feeling of happiness it's given to our lives. I no longer buy anything I don't need (freeing up more finances for more fun times) and my home is easier to manage and clean, we are all as a family so much happier. For me life is about quality time, because time is something none of us can ever get back! I don't want more money (as long as the bills are paid and we have food I'm happy) but what did need was more quality time, with family, with friends and with life. We've even made a mini allotment in our garden where our children grow veggies and salads, fruits and flowers, which is so wonderful, specially when I watch my kids go up to the fruit plants and just pick strawberries straight off and eat them with a smile. Life really can be so simple and fulfilling and you don't need all the crap we are brainwashed into believing we need. We just need each other, quality time and simplicity. ❤️

We also sold/donated everything (literally everything minus 4 suitcases) and made a huge move to Central America. It has been a huge lifestyle change and I’ve felt so many of the same things you’ve expressed in this video. We are 14 days out from another big move in which we’ve sold everything once again (this time we have 12 suitcases lol). Im amazed at how much stuff we’ve accumulated in 3 years when I thought we were pretty minimal. We are moving to a piece of land in Ecuador that I hope to nurture more slow simple living on ❤️

I can’t express how helpful you’ve been to me or how much I appreciate your messages. I’m doing a complete overhaul of every inch of our house. Eventually I’ll start working on our many sheds and outbuildings! We have 8 homeschooled children and a very busy farm. I just want to say thank you! ❤️

My depression (and bitterness towards past mistakes and decisions) lead me to get rid of EVERYTHING I didn't need... or absolutely LOVE. (Like... I don't "need" pictures hung on the wall, but there were a handful of framed paintings that have always been all-time favorites.. the kind of pictures you want to "fall into.") I basically purged my living space of unnecessary material things. I got rid of all my Holiday decor crap - about 4 large totes, because I only decorated some times and usually never used all of it anyway. If it's only seasonal aesthetic material, I don't need it. I have the outdoors for that! I got rid of all the kitchen clutter, made up of dishes/appliances that "I might use if I ever start cooking," or "if I ever host a gathering..." Reality: I hate cooking, baking, and hosting anything. I kept only the things I use everyday (or every week) or have used multiple times in the past. Everything else - gone. I had a collection of cute "stuffies" that I always kept in a tote. I never wanted to display them because I don't like the idea of having them collect dust... Well, if they're always hidden in a tote and I haven't missed them -- I don't need them! And so on and so forth. I've kept things for reasons like, "if I ever have children.. if I ever begin to have friends over on a regular basis" ... I don't socialize. I'm single. If I ever have kids, I'll buy what I need when that bridge is crossed. Less stuff feels like less stress. Less clutter and bulk, easier to clean, easier to find what you're looking for, etc. The things never made my life happier. Interestingly it's better off with less.

The American dream has never been about stuff. We all just listened to advertising that said we need this stuff. We can only blame ourselves. We were not forced to buy anything. Taking responsibility for our lives is a good first.

Thanks for this upload! Your video popped up on my KZbin Feed this morning as I have been following various Minimalist Channels for some years now. I am not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination, but as you so aptly stated, my journey towards cultivating a more "freeing" lifestyle started by looking at where I was spending the bulk of my time. I was and still am a career oriented professional who worked tirelessly to chase the American Dream. Once my husband and I secured the bespoke house filled with our favourite things, the clothing, the vehicles, and that fast paced lifestyle, we then burned extra fuel to manage it all. I'm an East Coaster born in Pennsylvania and worked many years in New York and Connecticut, so life in these States is fast paced. Then my husband's company moved us to Northern California where the lifestyle became even more fast paced since the cost of living there is off the charts. One can make good money there and can most definitely acquire all the trappings of the Dream, but the "true cost" of achieving these things sadly took a toll on our health, our relationships, and our sanity because all we had time for was working hard to maintain all that we thought was going to make us happy 😕. Fast forward to today where I currently live and work in the Middle East. There's truly a culture here that embraces a work/life balance and it has forced us to slow down and re-evaluate our lives. It's been the most rewarding opportunity that allowed us to live more mindfully.

Beautiful perspective! I find as a home owner that learning to love old things has been immensely soul nourishing. I buy second hand and I cherish the things others would throw away. In this way I can release the anxiety of attachment to things- the never ending cycle of wanting new and “fancy” things. Thank you for reminding me of why this is important 🌸

I enjoyed your video, I did this years ago about 30 moved to the big island of Hawaii with nothing, $800 and the clothes on my back, life snuck in on me, helping people made me need tools, beds, cabins and now I’m buried again! Back to eliminating my junk… this time it’s the life of a nomad bought my tickets to Thailand, then who know here’s next, funny how minimalism needs money, for me being in one place brings baggage ,people, responsibility, junk like life it’s an endless cycle
