100% in agreement on "Love is a Croc" being the worst. A failure as a sequel to one of the GOAT episodes, a Flanderization and character assassination of Baby Doll (and a creepy-in-a-bad-way character redesign, to boot). It's fuckin' lame, closest thing to a bad episode I could really point to across BTAS/TNBA. Also: "Perchance to Dream" and "The Laughing Fish" are my two favourite episodes as well. Damn, son. In particular, the premise of "The Laughing Fish" is so absurd and in-character for the Joker, I chuckle every time just thinking about it.

Too true. I grew up in the 2000s, so I only saw a couple of episodes on WB Kids when I was young. I didn't really get to experience the series in full until I was an adult, so I can honestly say (with no nostalgia bias talking) that I consider it to be the definitive version of Batman. I still enjoy other adaptations of the character, but I doubt anything will ever come along to top this series.

I don’t necessarily have a favorite episode of BTAS, but an episode that I think is underrated is a Bullet for Bullock. I like it because it explores Bullock, a character that’s more for comic relief in the show. Another aspect I like about the episode is its jazzy musical score.

Batman “condemning” Clayface isn’t out of some rigid moral structure, but because Matt Hagan is a dangerous criminal who cannot be permitted such power without limit. Even before he became Clayface, Hagan committed crimes on behalf of Roland Daggettto continue his addiction to the chemical that allowed his face to appear unblemished, and he was willing to go so far as to be an accessory to murder (if not straight up murder) an innocent man for him. While the tragedy of Hagan as an addict and a victim of Daggett is there, we cannot let that overshadow what a bad person he is. The isotope wouldn’t restore him to human form, but permit him unprecedented control over his powers, which would surely permit the morally corrupt Hagan to be unstoppable. Batman was willing to help him, but not on Hagan’s terms. And to further drive the point home on how much of a monster Hagan was, he attempted to murder Batman by suffocating him, going so far as to laugh maniacally at his horrific act.

For me " It's never too late" is a favorite episode. I just love that it's Arnold Stomwell's story and Batman is just a observer to it. It reminds me of the dynamics between Ebenezer Scrooge and Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, a guiding figure to troubled man. A Bullet for Bullock is my second favorite. I just love Bullock as a character, at least this version of him , rough around the edges but good hearted cop, so whole episode centered around him is a treat for me.

The thing I hated most about Love is a Croc is that Mary Dahl grew enamored with (the idea of) Killer Croc because he was purportedly someone like her: someone who had a lot more depth than people were willing to engage with due to their appearance. But then, when she hooks up with him, she starts acting like a child instead of the grown woman she wants to be seen as? In regards to the Bane episode, you're correct: the tie-in comics show that Thorne did in fact try to kill both Candice and Bane. I don't remember if Candice actually died, though. I think Second Chance is as good of a Robin episode as it is a Two-Face one.

I'm gonna defend "Old Wounds" a bit. I think what pushed Nightwing over the edge was that he felt that Bruce subtly manipulated Barbara into becoming a costumed vigilante and that Bruce may have done the same to him as a child. And yeah, this isn't really true, but it's understandable that he would believe it given his diminishing trust in Bruce. Stuff like the scene where Batman interrogates the henchman in front of his family could be why Nightwing would assume the worst. I do like how neither side is 100% wrong or right in this conflict and I thought it was compelling. Loved the video btw

I know I'm in the minority but I like the Bane episode quite a lot. Bane is basically an evil luchador, and many of the moves during the fight resemble pro wrestling. It is obvious that the writers were having fun at the expense of the character, so I think your enjoyment depends on how much you wanted to see comic book Bane vs this version. Still, while I''m not a big fan of the character, I get that if you are a fan you may feel frustrated by the episode.

I love that episode for all the reasons you mentioned, and Maxie Zeus is an underrated villain, both in the show and in the comics. He’s completely mad and delusional, theatrical, dangerous, entertaining, has a striking look, and a dash of pathos. That’s a recipe for Batman villains that works quite well. 1:52:29 It is a misconception that Spiderman couldn't throw a punch in his own show. He could, and he does occasionally. But the creators simply chose not to have him punch and do more grappling. Same thing with guns really, they weren't forbidden from showing guns. It's just that they chose to use laser guns. It's a creative choice, maybe one made with kids in mind but a creative choice nonetheless. They certainly were allowed to show things like guns or punches as much as Batman. I wouldn't usually harp on this, as I do consider it a mostly harmless misconception. Except I know some of the creators have voiced grievances at this misconception.

My favourite episode is the introduction of Clock King for the fact of my expectations being quite low for it and it then blowing my mind. 1:22:30 I do somewhat disagree with your reading of Mudslide's ending. While I agree that Batman's decision to turn the machine off was callous and the fact that he never even floats the idea of just giving Hagan the serum is very telling, but you also have to consider that, for the entire episode, Clayface hadn't given any indication that he would reform if he had the chance to become human again. His many angry outbursts at Stella and their generally dysfunctional relationship show that he was just as likely to have become a more dangerous, nigh unstoppable, villain if the serum had worked rather than just returning to normal life. I still think Batman's actions were questionable, but that aspect makes things more gray imo.
@EyebrowCinema
@EyebrowCinema 5 ай бұрын
@@ClassActJack that's a good point. In some ways it makes Batman's choice even more disturbing as it makes him a moral arbiter deciding of Hagen is worthy of being human again. You could also argue that it's a touch but necessary logical choice given the increased power the formula offers could make Clayface exponentially more dangerous. In some ways he is protecting the city by denying Clayface the formula even it's a disturbing use of power. As you point out, morally gray.

I was waiting for where Laughing Fish would rank. I'm actually surprised that my favorite episode made #1. Laughing Fish is THE definitive Joker episode and an awesome Joker and Harley Quinn episode. Batman perfectly defines/summarizes the Joker Francis: Uh, Batman, why is this happening to me? I've never done anything to this Joker. I'm just a paper-pusher. I can't change the laws. I'm harmless. Batman: And in his sick mind, that's the joke, Mr. Francis. I personally enjoyed the 4th season with its bright color palette and its redesigns. I think if they had given red lips to the Joker everyone would have been happy with it too. The only thing I really disliked about season 4 was they turned the Penguin into a middle of the road nightclub owner and he stopped being a top tier Villain with a retro design that isn't great. I did like that they made Catwoman a villain again in season 4. My Top 10 episodes are: 1. Laughing Fish 2. Holiday Knights 3. Christmas With the Joker 4. Harley and Ivy 5. Baby-Doll 6. Mean Seasons 7. Read My Lips 8. Pretty Poison 10. Legends of the Dark Knight And like 10 more others. I really love the episodes that lean into the dark whimsical Tim Burton movies Aesthetic like Baby Doll , Two-Face, Pretty Poison, Nothing to Fear, and Heart of Ice. While I Don't Disagree With The Complaints With The Artstyle Changes Of TNBA, I Understand Why They Happened, To Cut Down Production Costs, And To Be Fair, It Worked! TNBA Has Some Spectacular Consistent Animatoon. Plus I Actually Love A Few Of The Redesigns, Scarecrow And Mad Hatter Are Fantastic, And While Riddler And Joker Are ... Subpar At Best, They Did Lead To The Best Designs Of Each Character, So I Can't Be Too Mad.

One thing I have to credit this show is its portrayal of peril. Innocent people that are captured almost never die, but the darkness and gripping nature of the show constantly make you forget that, so you're worried for them every time. Definitely a hallmark of its excellent storytelling.

I know it's a movie and not a episode, and not even part of the original Batman the Animated series run. But Return of Joker is really my absolutely favorite Batman story of all times. Like sure it has the greatest joker death, but while I think it's great it is what comes after that I absolutely love. One thing I grow increasingly tired of is modern Joker fanboys who echo Jokers point of "everyones just one bad day away from being just as bad as Joker" from the Killing Joke story, and missing the whole point of the killing Joke that Joker is just a pathetic loser. Gordon didn't turn into the Joker after one bad day, and while Batman became Batman after one bad day he still turned his tragedy into motivation to actually better the world. And why does Joker even care about proving this point if he doesn't feel guilt for being the Joker? You get the point. I hate when the killing joke fanboys take Joker seriously, even if none of the story reinforces his point of view and clearly communicates that his own backstory might just a load of crap given that he remembers it one way sometimes and others at other times. Anyway back to Return of Joker. The thing I do adore about when Terry finally faces off against the Joker he does not take him seriously whatsoever! There is none of that "Oh you are Batmans greatest enemy, and by beating you I will finally prove myself a worthy successor to the cowl". The whole time Terry thinks Joker is a pathetic loser, and heckles him on what a joke he is during the whole fight. And while Joker is all "I knew all of Batman and Robins moves in their prime, and you're no Batman" Terry still wins because he is willing to kick Joker below the belt X'D And also think about this. The Joker is clown themed and often with a failed comedian backstory whenever he has a backstory. And what is a comedians arch nemesis? A heckler. Terry really is the ultimate foil to the Joker isn't he? TwT

The Laughing Fish is my favourite episode of the animated series as well for a lot of the same reasons as you said. I have a lot of nostalgic affection for it and to me it’s everything I want from an animated series episode. It has my favourite villain Joker, I love all the aquarium scenes. The plot is great and it’s a ton of fun. Also I love the fight at the end between Batman and Joker. It may not be the most emotional episode of the series but it doesn’t need to be.

I watched this video in its entirety a couple weeks ago, so I'm sure you won't see this comment. But in case you do: I genuinely found your critiques and comments so thoughtful, mature, and succinct that half the time I was just convinced you must have plagiarized from other sources (and I mean that as a compliment). You really have an intelligent and satisfying way of explaining your thoughts: You make a point of pointing out the highlights of each episode, even the bad ones; and, You point out key points in the history of the series, the history of the medium, and the history of these characters, providing key context for viewers - especially younger viewers - who may not know how this series fits into the larger picture of this now-overplayed universe. I don't know why this video was pushed out to me by the KZbin algorithm, but I'm glad it was. I'd love to see you do a similar project for Batman Beyond or the Justice League+Unlimited shows. Great work, truly.

fun facts about SEE NO EVIL. Elizabeth Moss went to on star in 2019 horror movie The Invisible Man by Lee Wanell. Wanell must have been a fan because many of of the visuals from that movie are lifted straight from this episode (paint on the invisible man, rain on the invisible man, etc).

I think the reason for doing 'HOLIDAY KNIGHTS' as the opening episode is because it was the first annual of the 'The Batman Adventures' a comic run written to be in cannon with the tv show, with most of the writers working on the comic stories. I think they did this as a wink to the people who read the book, considering it is one of the better issues. This would also explain the Sub Zero plot hole because it came out in 1994 or 1995, I believe before the Sub Zero movie came out. Fun fact Sub Zero was later adapted in the run, in the rebranded title 'The Batman and Robin Adventures", which changed over when the show changed it's name.

It's actually pretty iconic to put "The Laughing Fish" as a number 1. I don't know if I agree on personal level, but I completely understand. The score is crazy good, the plot is a pure grotesque, Mark Hamill performance brilliant (Joker has to be funny, not only psychopatic and there, he is!) and it actually hints the very disturbing and abusive nature of Joker and Harley's relationship. Anyway, enjoyed your ranking, a very interesting take! 🖤
