They recorded a lot of the lines while having the voice actor in VR in the RIO seat actually doing the functions he needs to. That's why you sometimes hear him go "uhhhh" before he calls that he did what you asked him to or you hear him straining when he calls out target locations. It's a real guy moving around back there when he speaks.

Be warned, once you go human RIO, you’ll never go back xD it’s honestly one of the coolest game experiences. Also when you shoot a Phoenix is PD-STT (like when you just tell Jester to STT target ahead) it acts like a Fox-1, so it never goes pitbull which is why those were missing. There should be an option for jester to set “PH ACT” which tells the missile to go pitbull right off the rail in any mode (which means you want to be relatively close since it no longer gets mid course guidance)

I can attest to that, I mainly Rio myself mainly cos I get to push the big red button for the pheonixes also cos laser bombing just just fun even if a t-72 is 2 pixels. But jester pisses me off sometimes only way to force the phoenix to go active off the rail is the acm cover. The jester menu is missing things it should have. Also PAL mode is fucking life cos can't trust jester to STT. Also love your vids and men cry over spilt vodka.

When I saw your first DCS video a year ago I was thinking “Yeah there’s no way in hell I’m touching that complicated sim.” I had the system and a very cheap hotas but I could barely understand Microsoft Flight Sim let alone this study level combat flight simulator. Then around may this year I said “Screw it.” Did some research, got the F/A-18 Hornet as my first module and started learning. Met a bunch of people, flew with them, learned some more and then got the Tomcat as my second module, I heard it was hard to fly but I didn’t really have much trouble flying it. Learned the tomcat, flew with my buddies as my human rio along with the jester ai and then got the F-16 Viper as my third and final module. And then around today I realized that around this time last year I was scared to commit to this game and learn it and now I have bo trouble flying not one but three full fidelity modules. I’d like to thank you for introducing me to DCS because I wouldn’t have found this great community without you drewski.

If I remember right the reason Jester is telling you to slow down is that you're going beyond the optimal turning speed of the tomcat, not because you shouldn't try and close with a bandit. Cheers dude! Banger as always

The reason that you keep losing lock isn't because of Jester (well, at least not all the time). On more than one occasion the enemy turned and notched your radar, causing you to drop the lock. One of the unfortunate downsides of the AWG-9 radar

It added radar ground mapping and better ground clutter resistance, but there isn't a ton of other information on it's improvements. When you launch a FOX 1, get below the target after launch. Jester won't lose lock as often. Also, Jester calls out speeds in dogfights now, so that way you can keep to the best speed for optimal turn rate.

Drew, one small thing is that you can press the CAGE/SEAM button once the AIM-9's seeker starts screaming (when the pipper on the HUD covers the bandit aircraft), activating SEAM, Sidewinder Expanded Acquisition Mode, could expend the field of view of the seekerhead, allows the missile to remain lock at a higher off-boresight angle. This is extremely useful when shooting at high aspect, high speed target

There is an option in special settings to prevent Jester from switching modes. What he does without that option turned on is switch pulse modes during an STT track, which briefly drops lock. If there's a fox 1 in the air it trashes the shot.

Jester calling out the speed is for dogfights. It's in since the 2.7. When in dogfight, you can't always read your speed if you are focused on your target, getting jester to call it help managing it.

Drew also the reason he called out your speed is part of the 2.7 update which added 1000+ voice lines for BFM call outs, he's "helping" by calling out your speed for effective turn rate. Is say "helping" cos its jester and jester never helps.

Anither tip for the F14 setting the target size changes the distance at which the pheonix goes active so making the pheonix go active later makes the missile bleed less energy by it doing less drastic maneuvers as its closer to the target. Small is the closest, and large is the furthest. Small is the best for BVR I have found especially with the earlier pheonixes as a player can easily just turn cold and the missile is a dud.

In slow airspeed with high AoA use the rudder to roll instead of the stick, you'll be way quicker and snappier. With Fox-1 and STT you have to crank very gently for Jester to keep the lock. Don't even try to go gimball, it never works. I found useful to actually go lower than the target to avoid any ground clutter.

You'll get the high pitch scream If you lose lock sub 20 miles, do the horizontal scan as quick as you can. might recover the missile (aim-7 for sure if you do it quick) The Camera cross is usually locked on

21:20, you had only one Sparrow, because the initial load-out was technically impossible. The Phoenix missiles need cooling, the wing pylons have their own system, but the coolant for the tunnel mounted missiles is in the first two pylons. If you want to mount Phoenix in the tunnel, it has to be the forward pylons first, which blocks three Sparrow slots.

Hey man, new to your channel here. Great videos and as a fan of DCS, no need to tell that these are my favorites. If you allow me to point a few tips on the F-14 and Fox-1 employment: 1. The radar in F-14 isn't that good when looing down over land, so when STT-ing a target, try to stay bellow them as much as possible; 2. Even more importantly, go to DCS special options, under F-14 DISABLE Jester switching to P-STT when close. This was an eye-opener for me. Before that, i lost like 3/4 of my STT locks because of a bug that occurs when Jester switches from PD-STT to P-STT. 3. When STT-ing from within 15NM, go for a P-STT lock right away and not a PD-STT! 4. Any lock made with PAL mode, or VS-L and VS-H dogfight modes are P-STT by default; 5. A Phoenix fired in P-STT is active off the rails! No lock maintaining is required. It's tracking capability is severely diminished though, to something like 10-12NM; 6. When radar locking a target with a Sidewinder selected, once locked on target, press the uncage button. This will let the infrared seeker point to the target and radar lock is no longer needed I hope this helps and good hunting!

Great video! When using the AIM-7 in the Tomcat and you know the bandit has not shot a missile at you make sure you flip the ACM cover up and keep the bandit centre HUD. The ACM cover up will use the FLOOD mode of the radar if the 7 loses track. The Sparrow will then track the spotlighted target. FLOOD will work out to 30nm and any aircraft within the FLOOD cone will recieve an engagement warning even though the missile is not tracking them. At least this is how it should work. There is a bug in the Cat right now where if you pull near the gimbal you will lose lock, this is a known bug and will hopefuly be fixed soon. Once it is you will be able to be more aggressive when using the Sparrow or an STT Phoenix. However just remember that FLOOD mode when using Fox-1's. Thanks for another great vid! PS. Jest like to change over to P-STT from PD-STT at around 15nm from a bandit. If he does this when you are not nose pure on the bandit then he will lose lock.

Hey Draski, F14 gamer here! I saw you were using a lot of aim 9s. 4 in fact. From experience flying the f14 (although I don’t play on that server so I don’t know what the weapon restrictions are) but if you can, take 2 aim 9s the very outer pylons then the inner wing pylons are aim 7s (sometimes me and my human rio take all aim 54-A phoenixes so we can cross map from 60 miles or even 70 sometimes), and then we take all phoenixes on the 4 belly pylons. For us, aim 9s are useless because we lock guys from 80 miles, fire at 60, and drop them at 40. Also heads up, your human rio is going to have to learn how to use DDI because Erase and Gain on it is super useful. Use rws to find someone’s angels and azimuth then switch to tws to fire. Jester is op so he just finds everyone in tws and usually he will lock someone. To know if he did just see if a target is blinking or if he is a light green instead of the dark green. Sometimes you need to use stt to tell him to fire but I never hold the lock, I break it so he doesn’t realize I’m firing on him. Like so draski can receive some epic gamer tips!

Really like to know how you learned so much about flying the tomcat. BTW fox numbers are only used to refer to the launching of missiles. They don't refer to what they are when being stored on the rack. (It's not "I have 3 fox-2s" instead it's "I have 3 aim-9s")

Yeah since 2.7 update, jester is calling speed during the dogfight to help you maintain your best turn speed, and I don't think you can disable it, however that's pretty useful if you wanna outturn the ennemi.
