I live in the States, and my Grandma decided (For no reason we have no Irish in our background) That she loved the name, Rory. Then talked my mom into spelling it Ruaidhrie based on a book she read. That was a nightmare growing up. So I ended up using my middle name most of my childhood. Now I love it.

There's no mystery why most people don't know how to pronounce Gaelic Irish names. No one outside of Ireland (or Irish families) is ever taught Gaelic pronunciation. If you don't know what phonic sounds are represented by letters, you will of course substitute the sounds you have in your own language's usage, because that's how it looks to you. Most people can't pronounce Welsh, either, for the same reason: no one ever taught the sounds that correspond to the letters in THAT language.
@RaghnaidAnnaNicGaraidh
@RaghnaidAnnaNicGaraidh 8 жыл бұрын
+CriticalListener Gaelic-speakers? I grew up in Australia with Scottish (Gaelic-speaking) family, so I can pronounce Irish names no problem (although I'm constantly told I have such a Scottish accent when I do... particularly the a-fada, has a very different sound in my language). You could probably find certain parts of Canada (I mean Alba Nuaidh/ Nova Scotia) that could have a fair whack at it, too.
@CriticalListener
@CriticalListener 8 жыл бұрын
+Rachel Hay I have no doubt that's true. You're still making my point. Only those who have SOME kind of active Gaelic cultural background--whether Scottish or Irish--will have absorbed those sounds in their inner ear, and not have difficulty in reading and pronouncing those names. While I've heard the name Nova Scotia, know it's Latin for "New Scotland", I never saw 'Alba Nuaidh' before you wrote it there. I have no idea how the second word would sound, assuming "Alba" sounds like it would in Latin--though I realize there's no guarantee of that, if that spelling sounds like something else in Gaelic.
@RaghnaidAnnaNicGaraidh
@RaghnaidAnnaNicGaraidh 8 жыл бұрын
+CriticalListener "Alla-puh nwye" or "alla-puh noo-eye"... I wasn't entirely disagreeing with your point, just pointing out that I'm neither in Ireland nor from an Irish family... then again, we refer to the two languages as the same (I'd say "Gaidhlig na h-Eireann", literally "Gaelic of Ireland" and they'd call my language "Gaeilge na hAlba" or "Irish of Scotland"). Anyway, Gaelic likes to have epenthesis (intrusive vowel) after L or R - think of how Scottish people sometimes pronounce "girl" or "world" with two syllables. "Nuaidh" is some grammatical form of "nuadh" (pron. "noo-ug") meaning "new" - it's simply "nua" with a fada on the A in Irish. In Gaelic-speaking circles it's common to refer to Nova Scotia as "Alba Nuaidh", but I thought I'd better clarify although I never use the Latin for it!
@CriticalListener
@CriticalListener 8 жыл бұрын
+Rachel Hay So there's an extra syllable before the 'b' in 'Alba' is turned into a 'p' sound, while the 'd' in 'Nuaidh' appears to be silent. Between the epenthesis (thank you for the new word/concept--I'd never encountered it before) and substitution of sounds, my head is spinning! My ignorance of things Gaelic is directly proportional to my lack of exposure to it, both Irish and Scottish. Big cities like New York and Chicago have sizable Irish-descent populations, so our immediate response to the concept "Gaelic" is " = Irish". Since our Scottish descent populations are either minimal, &/or have assimilated into the melting pot so very long ago, they sadly don't even show up on the radar--unless you're of that descent. (That's also true of the non-Gaelic UK-descent population in general.) That's why a Scots' Gaelic didn't even occur to me. The main place I've seen the word "Erse" is in a crossword puzzle. I mean no offense at all--that's simply the literal truth.
@RaghnaidAnnaNicGaraidh
@RaghnaidAnnaNicGaraidh 8 жыл бұрын
+CriticalListener Close enough. B and D aren't as hard in Gaelic as in English, so a B is sort of halfway between B and P, and a D is halfway between D and T. But DH is a whole different kettle of fish - it's like a glottal G when it's broad (next to A, O, or U) and more like a Y when it's slender (next to I or E) - hence why nuadh="noo-ug" in the nominative but nuaidh="noo-eye" when it's slenderised. Yeah, I can see how this is complicated. I actually couldn't read/write Gaelic until quite recently, so it boggled my mind for a bit, but once you work out what combinations make what sounds, it's very consistent, unlike English. Only about 1.5% of Scotland actually speaks Gaelic, so I can see how it wouldn't register, given most expats seem to be from Glasgow, where they speak broad Scots (itself officially a different language, but a Germanic one, not a Celtic one). A majority of speakers were killed/deported during the Clearances, so aside from a few pockets of Canada and New Zealand, anyone of Scottish-Gael descent a few generations removed has lost the language and wouldn't know, basically.

I'm a Gráinne too! The new school year in my international school in the middle east was always fun. When doing the first roll call, there would normally be alot of awkward stutters and pauses by teachers for lots of my classmates' names, but at least they would bravely plough on, no matter the pronounciation. Then came my name. You could see teachers succumb by their stretching awkward silence and facial gymnastics. My class would throw knowing smiles and glances my way which the teach followed to find me. I do answer to all 7 tentative variations when I can't be arsed though!

Kristen T Depending on where you are in Ireland, "mh" is pronounced either as "v" or as "w." It's because the sound [m] can change into a [v]/[w] under certain circumstances, so they show you that that happened by putting "h" after the "m." Then, since they didn't need to spell the [v]/[w] sound any other way, they just went with the "mh" instead of adding a letter or two to the alphabet.

My name is Calina (pronounced Ka-lee-na) and it means sunshine in sanskrit. The way that it is spelled is different from how it is usually spelled Kaleena because my mom wanted me to have a name that started with a "C" just like her name, Carol. But ever since I've gone to school, from Kindergarten until now in my last year of college, I always heard "Celina", "Caroline", "Catalina", and everything you could possibly think of, except for how it is really pronounced. It used to bother me that my name was so unique compared to all of the other girls with "normal names" like Lauren, Ashley, and Rachel, but now I like it because it makes me stand out as a person.

You would think that I never had any problems with anybody mispronouncing my name, but I had a manager who printed up a name tag for me call me "Sar-aia". Apparently, he worked with an Indian girl previously who spelled her name "Sarah" but it was pronounced "Sar-aia". As much as I would prefer something cool and interesting like that, I'm just plain old "Sar-rah". I often regretted that there's no way to shorten or pep up my name. Though, some Latin guys at one restaurant called me Sarita for a while. Until another girl, who's name was actually Sarita, joined the crew.

Cliodhna IsNotOnFire Because the D used to be pronounced in Old Irish. Then they came up with ways to talk faster and some dialects did so differently, which is why the d is sometimes pronounced when discussing mythology and sometimes not, and is additionally why the language is so fucked.

@aerithcolfer3623 8 жыл бұрын
My name's Maura - the Irish form of it. It's pronounced EXACTLY the same as 'Laura' but with an 'M' instead of an 'L'. And I've had so many different pronunciations and spelling. I've had Maureen, Moira, and Mara which are ones I can understand but I've had Mow-Rah (like the first part is pronounced like 'now' with an 'M'), and most shockingly, Manray. The others I have a vague idea but I'll never now how i got Manray. I was given a certificate in primary school for poetry, and even though my name was listed as 'Maura' on the register, some genius decided that 'Maura' is not a name, but 'Manray' is. What makes this worse is my sister is Roisín (Ro-Sheen) and most people know how to spell and pronounce her name (some people struggle with it but for the most part they know right away or know after being told once) but for me, it takes months of telling some people, even going with the easy 'It's the same as Laura but with an M' way to remember it and it just doesn't sink in with some people, to the point I just have to sit down and accept people are always going to call me 'Moira'

I can somewhat relate to this. My surname is fairly easy to pronounce, Fowler. However, the vast majority easily overlook where the L (and sometimes add an S on the end when it's non-existent) is and say "Flower(s) is a beautiful last name." and I have to correct them each time (not rudely, of course). Or they misspell my first name (Danielle, shortened to Dani), they either add two N's with an I, or add the Y on the end. then some people that see how it's spelled, either say "Dana" or "Dawni/Dahni". It's amusing to see how people can overlook or mispronounce things when it's very clear how it's spelled lol.

My name is Banissa (Ba ni ssa...You pronounce the i like the i in Melissa). I've had it pronounced so many different ways. In school I knew substitute teachers were at my name to call roll because they would always stop, looked puzzled, and try and pronounce my name. Over the years I loved to see what they would come up with. Most people, when I tell them my name over the phone or even in person will say "Vanessa" and I'm like "No, it's Banissa with a B like boy". I've also had it pronounced Banesha, Banessa, Bakneesa...so many ways. I'm that kid that couldn't find their name on mugs or key chains. Now that I'm older, I take pride in my name because it's so unique. I can say that I know I will always have someone who hasn't heard my name try and pronounce it, but when I'm a senior I'll have more fun with it.

At least, that's my favourite way that people pronounce it, but I don't mind if they can't. 🙂 Although, I will say that every time I introduce myself people say "what???", so then I just repeat myself but pronounce it "katreena", because it's not worth the hassle. 😪😅

I'm lucky in that nobody really struggles to pronounce my first name. Spelling it, on the other hand, results in a fantastic array of names. Sebastien is the most common, followed by Sebastion and Sabastian. I tend to run with Seb as it's hard to mess up three letters (that said, I've been called Sab before). My surname is Bengali but a fantastically simple name that confuses people. Hague, Hack, Hock, Hack-wei, Hack-you are all pronounciations I've heard before. It's pronounced "Hack". Do any of my fellow nice-name friends just resort to answering to any manner of butchery of your name in the hope that it's actually you? When I was in school, one of my teachers called me Sab. My sister is called Sam. We used to get mixed up all the time with him.

I never understood it - everyone can pronounce Megan and Meagan and Meghan and Megen and Meggin, but you can't manage Meaghan? And then there was middle school, where I tried to go by my middle name thinking it'd be easier and everyone spelled it with only one 'e' and called me Collin.

Siobhan ..... Your name is one of my favorites.. If I'd had a third daughter she would have been Siobhean.. The first two are Carrie and Katie,after their grandmas.. Don't be offended but I did give the name to a cat.. I always try to give my cats Gaelic names..

Any time my foreign relatives ( I seem to have new ones all the time) see my name... To them it's pronounced 'Nay-oys'... It's "Nee-sha" Jesus. I don't blame them though, I mean it has four of the five vowels in it.

My name's Sinéad, and oh boy is it fun when I go to coffee shops or to doctor's appointments. It isn't the most amusing mix up to have when you need to go to the E.R., but on a lighter note I almost always get the copyright symbol somewhere in my name whenever I get printed mail-

My given name is Stephen. People either spell it with a 'V' when they ask it and have to write it down, or call me Steffan if they read it off of something without knowing it. It's such a common name I have no idea how people twice my age still get it wrong. Stephen Colbert helped a bit, but then Steph Curry came along and ruined it again.

My name is Isabella. When my old gym/health teacher first met me, he pronounced my name Is-Ella. Yep. I’ve gotten Isabeela, EE-sa-bella, Is-Abb-Ella, and my most hated, Isabelle. This substitute was doing attendance and when got to my name she said “Ice cream? Wait sorry, Ursula? Sorry I’m an elderly, and I can barely read. Let me try again. Istanbul?” I was so embarrassed. Really, where did you get any of those. I said back, “It’s Isabella.” Her: “Isn’t tell?” I couldn’t with this lady. My crush was next to me, and he had wide eyes. Me: “No, it’s Isabella.” Her: “Ok, Isabelle.” I accepted it. Where the heck did that go wrong? It’s embarrassing that my name is so easy to pronounce, yet people still pronounce it wrong.

You'd think "Lucy" would be easy enough, but not so when you grow up in Germany. Got a lot of French [Lucie] and German [Luzy/ie] variation there. When I was over there was even an Irish colleague who for whatever reason pronounced it kinda Italian [Lucia]. Guess folks can get every name wrong if they want to

spasticpeach My older sister is Caoimhe too, we pronounce it "Kwee-va" though. I'm not sure if that's a dialectal thing or what. My parents gave all three of us super Irish names, but Caoimhe is probably the most difficulty one. She once got called "Kai-o-mi" at a wedding.
