Very cool damn ! Amazing I’ve been doing this for a long time but last year I sold and got into sports cards and Pokémon and magic and yugioh . But I swear I had so much knowledge of numismatics! And one day I’d live to get back into it . I’d probably only purchase pieces though now realizing how horrible roll searches were and checking for wams cams and vams upon many other errors ! Was super time consuming. Love ya for this though your one of the few coin bad a$$ I still watch !

Coin ping test is still free, but that's for a limited amount of items you can choose from to test. If you really want to test a wide variety, they now require you pay for the premium version

Or just go with a online dealer like apmex or others that are well known and have a reputation they want to keep that’s fare in price because I agree everywhere you look is fakes and even online there is fakes that look real being sold for a doller forty nine which at that price we know but it’s when it’s bought by crooks it’s sold as real if you don’t check them and to look you would think there real and my opinion should be illegal because they say .999 fine silver atleast the fakes are cut out through places like apmex just a little more of a premium but not much if you buy right

I've had a similar situation. My ASE didn't quite "sound" like the others, however it passed the sigma test. I also used the ping coin app on my phone to see if my ears hadn't detected something. It passed the app test! What I discovered is that although Sunshine Mint mostly supplies the blanks for the US Mint to strike the ASE, that's not always the case. I have two 1997 ASE and they both sound the same (not as pleasant to the ears as the others) and they both passed the sigma and the coin ping app. Although I believe the sigma is accurate, I still verify using other inexpensive methods.

Mark, I’m not sure why you think this sigma can’t test like other sigmas.. it’s the same exact technology. If you think the “pro” is somehow testing deeper then that’s an error in thinking. Simply turning the coin over allows you to test just like the sigma pro.

A note of clarification. Counterfeiters are not faking "ten cent" coins, but rather (by F'eral Reserve reckoning), they are faking two buck coins, and in bulk it may well pay off.

I’m guessing the eagle that passed the sigma had a heavy silver plating. I just bought the more expensive mini pro for the through thickness testing. Should be here tomorrow 🎉

With all the dirty games that’s played in this hobby is why I just order from a well known and established silver dealer on line saves from bothering the lcs that hates to be bothered usually and way more selections and probably easier to sell when it comes time if left in its original baggy and have receipts for all of it. I let my online dealer deal with all that and the buying of equipment as well so they can check

What's nice about the redbook is the pages have pictures of the coins on them that are supposed to be the exact diameter so you can simply place your coin over top of the picture and make sure the diameter is correct

I only personally purchased one piece of fake silver in my whole collection you see of fakes. It was $5 at a garage sale and I thought the value of a fake in helping others learn would be more valuable than $5… I was right. Learn from them, teach others, and if that seems like something you don’t have time for then you can send them to me so I can show others and help educate.

@SpegTacular the weight is off, it looks like it's been filed down, and I had a shop throw it on a signa machine and it was outside the brackets but she kept saying that their machine did that from time to time (it was just to the right of the right bracket) I suspect it's fake and I didn't look at the coin very well as I bought it with 10 other 1/2 ounce coins thinking they were all the same

Have 2 counterfeit Roosevelt dimes that I received when purchasing $40 face. The dimes circulated through the counting machine and went on my way. There were a few really dirty coins that I dipped (EZest) and two of them didn't look right or feel right. After weighing them and using the sigma (wand attachment) they were undoubtedly fake.

Interesting However, my LCS makes all of his determinations from sight/feel, and if he is in question, he breaks out one of his Sigma machines. I have the exact same Sigma machine he uses, so if it passes on that, it is good enough for me to buy it, and it is good enough for him to buy it....(I guess ultimately, we could both be passing counterfeit items unintentionally.) Personally, I have yet to find a counterfeit silver coin/round that tricked the Sigma, though I have heard of it. My guess is, it would have to have a thick enough coating of actual silver to trick the flat tester. Try a suspect coin with the small wand and backer disc....That has also been fool-proof in my experience.
