I met him this week standing in line to board a plane. Nice person. We talked about guitars and about the concept behind the song Watch the World Burn. I did not recognize him… he just looked like a musician and so I asked him if he was. He was very indulgent, and took the time to talk to a much older man about his music.

The most amazing haunting part of the layered voice is the line "I'm an addict" left hanging. The effect makes it into an open confession through all his layers without cover. Where as ten years ago he said it as a "joke exaggeration".' Like the hardest step for most people who struggle with levels of addiction.

First of all, as a pro wrestling fan, I knew Paige was dating a rock singer, but have never listened to his band. So for that introduction, I want to thank Elizabeth and every person, who recommended this. That song was a journey. It was dark, haunting, beautiful and impactful all at the same time. Not to mention that his vocal performance literally gave me chills at times. On a related noted about the song and the video, Paige was also battling addiction, following an abusive relationship in the past, as well as having to retire from professional wrestling at the age of 25, because of a severe neck injury, which may add to the story. Also, during the beginning of her career, she used to dress in goth clothes and had the nickname " The Glampire", which is also interesting.

When he said "Daddy should've never raised me on Black Sabbath!" I think that's not just a reference on the vocals inspiration, before the Dio days, the members had some issues with drug addiction that ultimately led Ozzy to be fired by the band in 1979. Also Ozzy's vocals also are not the best, but he has the hell of a charisma and his voice is indeed iconic.

The timeline of the story is an intermingled flashback from the perspective of Page's character but narrated by Ronnie. She walks in as a human on her lover feeding and finds out he's a vampire. She kills herself out of that fear and grief that he never loved her? He brings her back to life as a vampire but the townsfolk come to kill him and he gives himself up so they don't know about her. Then back to early scenes of the music video on the ongoing timeline she arises and spends some unknown amount of time visualizing and remembering him and their true love. Then she allows herself to be destroyed at dawn on a next or future sunrise, remembering him.

I thought it was less a 'discovery' and more 'having denial stripped away', which would be closer to the 'vampire as addict' metaphor. Often, the partner of an addict is in deep denial about the addiction they're living in the shadow of, until something confronts them with the truth "God bless all of you know, cos I'm going straight to hell. And I'm taking you down with me, because you know damn well...'

Shakespeare vibes are strong with this one. Sadly, life conspired to ensure that I missed these tracks when they were first released. For those who are long time fans of the band, I can only imagine how amazing it must be to hear these remastered versions with the gap of a decade between releases to reflect on the meaning or intentions of it all. These guys have perfected the art of building towards a dramatic cliff and taking a captive audience for the ride over the edge. I get the impression that Ronnie has matured to harness the ability to keep the drama in his artistic presentation while simultaneously erasing it from consuming his everyday life. An admirable quality indeed. Good for them. Sincerely. Informative and very well presented review (as always!). Enjoyed every bit of the critique.

Thank you for this wonderfull reaction. I was really waiting for this. I think the ending of the video makes more sense, when seeing it in the context of the final dedication to Derek. He did die only some months after the death of his fiancee. The circumstances of his death were not made public. Staying in the framework of this incredible production, one could just not exist without the other, resulting in both of them vanishing from the scene. Another thing that I personally like to believe is, that the original was more focussed on the impact, that drug abuse has on yourself and your own life. The remake has a bit more of an emphasis on the drama, that it brings to the people you love. On the concept of co-dependence. It tries to make more clear that, in the bitter end, a drug addiction does not only waste your personal life. 'And I'm taking you down with me, because...', 'So I sharpen my teeth...', 'You better drive this stake...'

The first half of the video was like watching a giddy schoolgirl (and I mean that as a compliment); transitioning to the genuine sadness & empathy in your eyes during the scene with the woman in the tub... it says an awful lot about your quality & general character. Instant fan of your work. Subscribed.

Yes Ronnie has amazing endurance and I think it has to do that he also WANTS it and BELIEVES it and truly FEELS the emotions and importance to what he is trying to get across. It gives a drive to his voice.

Hello, I learned to make those screams through the ventricular bands, they are the ones that generate the necessary tension to generate that scraped sound and the diaphragm serves to give it power, however, you can also do guttural with a more whispered sound where it depends completely on the ventricular bands and the diaphragm helps maintain a constant flow of air

I think the line "whiskey seems to be my holy water" is so genius, as it can be interpreted as good for him (assuming you think holy water is good), but also bad because of his drug abuse (like holy water for a vampire).

Very nice reaction! I think the woman in white is roaming the house remembering the past with him. As you can tell when she looks at the piano thats covered then remembers him playing it with herself behind him. In the end I believe she stepping into the light cause she couldn't go on without him. Not only is Ronnie's vocals on point but both his and Saraya's acting is too. Ronnie's been dropping some hints on his channel of something else might be dropping soon. Subbed!

This is just a question since it has happened a couple of times now, when 3 of the 6 reactors I follow at the same day react to the same song I get suspicious.... do you get contacted by other than followers to react to certain songs from time to time? i.e. artists or what would be worse greedy record companies/promotors? I get extra suspicious since the three reactors (you being one) normally have totally different tastes and categories when it comes to music.

I noticed (I don’t know if anyone else did it’s mostly related to the story of the video) but that throughout the song he’s saying he’s not a vampire and adamantly denying being one (with the choir) but the moment he realises that he’s hurt the person he loves(when she kills herself) he admits to the monster he’s become as he changed her and at that point he’s screaming this out because he’s in pain. The choir also seems to be repeating his inner thoughts.

Please review something from Chiodos! Anything from their first two albums, songs like "The Words "Best Friend" Become Redefined" "Baby, You Wouldn't Last A Minute On The Creek" "Lexington. (Joey Pea-Pot with a Monkey Face)" "The Undertaker's Thirst For Revenge Is Unquenchable...", and if you want just singing choose "intensity in ten cities"; They love using synth, piano, and violin in their music. Craig Owens is the lead singer and imho is the best at being able to sing melody and scream.

It takes a truly mad man to be able to sing like this. And that's why we love it. And, Liz, don't pretend that you're rewinding just for the little bits of vocal play - that screaming is closer to an artwork, than a vocal expression. Don't worry, just keep rewinding right there. Over and over and over again, nobody will complain :D Also: Evergrey. Just pick one ;)
