@@okreylosThat’s like 60 miles outside of Los Angeles, half way to Ventura. The series is creative with its geography. But not that creative. Unless there’s a famous landfill or junkyard out there that I don’t know about, your hypothesis is doubtful. The landfill theory is the most plausible. I also would not be surprised if it was named after Philadelphia. I don’t imagine that the majority of surface dwellers are literate, or care overly much about spelling if they do know how to read and write. So it’s also likely that it’s a simple misspelling that stuck. Besides, our contemporary surface dwellers, aka da youts, don’t seem to give a damn about spelling when they send messages to each other on their Pip boys. Just remember that without a government monopoly on violence, there is nothing and no one to enforce the rules of spelling. Let’s be thankful each day that we still have laws and spelling.

Watching this, you have to keep in mind that a lot of the scenes are paying tribute to the video game. So, while they seem absurd sometimes, they are actually intended to be a nod to things in the game. Someone watching this who is completely unfamiliar with the game would absolutely be thinking wtf from time to time.

The giant bag that the squires carry is a joke on the fact that in the game you can carry huge amounts of inventory on yourself, but also if you have a companion, you’ll make them carry huge amounts of additional junk as a convenience. 👍 as others have noted, there are a lot of jokes tied to how the games work, though no worries if you miss them, there’s no big deal. The show has really nailed the game’s tone though, with its odd mixture of dark (post-apocalyptic) and innocently or naively hopeful (1950s feeling, though probably only from shows of the time and such). And then just a bit of the absurd thrown in to be really funny on top. A strange mix for the satirical feeling with naïveté and twisted horrors. 😜

The Ghoul's age...that's funny since it seems L&M don't realize who he is yet. So, when you first see him it appears he's in his 40's. Add 219 years and he's now a bit over 260 years old. Also, the Brotherhood of Steel in game lore was a unit of the Army that survived the war and set out to secure dangerous technology so it couldn't be used to finish off the human race. However, over the years they've suffered doctrine drift and several schisms in their group until the semi-religious cult like group they are today.

The Brotherhood seems like a military religious order, like the Christian knights that went to the Holy Lands to fight the Crusades, led by ascetic monks, like Franciscans or whatever. Even the aspirant training was run like a Catholic school, with physical punishment for wrong answers. (Plus I don’t think Maximus is a very good student.)

He’s seen brutal tragedy as a child, but other than that, he’s been indoctrinated in the customs and rules of a religious organization. (I don’t call them a cult. I’ve seen nothing that makes the rituals of the brotherhood seem more cult like than the rites of any mainline religion.) Think of kids that have been raised in strict religious households where they’re taught that sex is shameful. Such kids are pillars of ignorance when they confront human sexuality outside of their group norms.

Closest thing to Ghouls in Serbian would be your Vrykolakas, however Ghoul within the fallout context is slightly different from the wider concept of Ghouls generally. In Fallout lore Ghouls are those survivors mutated by radiation instead of killed by it. There are different end results dependent on the species and to some extent even the individual in question as different humans won't necessarily get the same result. In humans becoming a Ghoul typically would mean extended lifespans, potentially functional immortality, sped up wound healing to the point they can reattach limbs and the ability to direct radiation damage. It does have side effects however and most commonly that is with appearance where a Ghoul starts to resemble a walking corpse or a burn victim as their flesh heals so quickly they become covered in scar tissue. Mentally they vary from intelligent productive members of society in more progressive areas to outsiders struggling to survive in those less forgiving areas. In extreme cases they turn feral at which point they are basically just zombies, albeit the quick and intelligent guide that sprints at you rather than the slow rambling ones.

24:25: "What the F are his guns?" The Ghoul is using a weapon from Fallout 1 & Fallout: New Vegas called the "Hand Cannon"; and it NORMALLY fires 5.56mm rounds. In this episode, the Ghoul is definitely firing explosive rounds instead of the normal 5.56; hence the exploding bodies. It's also why he isn't able to even dent Maximus; explosive rounds don't do anything to power armor. If he had thought to load up some armor-piercing rounds though...

The vaults were not actually full of rich people. Most vaults had middle and upper middle class. Rich people could afford their own private fallout shelters. And while the vaults in general were not nice places to be. Vaults like the one Lucy was in were a minority. Most vaults ended up horror stories.

I won't dive into a psychological analysis, but many humans have a biological drive to protect those they perceive as vulnerable. This applies to small children, the mentally handicapped, and also many animals, especially furry ones. It's linked to the protective instinct or the mothering/caring instinct. In your example, the dogs are not vulnerable, they are a serious threat, so different criteria apply mentally.

Lucy comes from a civilized environment. So too does the person playing the game, so she is the obvious proxy for the game player who is also innocent and naive about the post nuclear surface world and its inhabitants. (though she was very quick to catch on to the threatening presence of irradiated "Raiders" in episode 1). And like the player, Lucy will lose her innocence in order to adapt to this new harsh environment (which like in the game will sometimes involve violence towards dogs. The dog companion in Fallout 4 is immortal, but not invincible).

I found it interesting that Dr Wilzig carried a "Ripper" with him (the mini chainsaw tool). Its a popular close quarter melee weapon which is rather inconsistent with the temperament of Wilzig who doesn't strike me as close quarter combat guy. But it could be a handy survival tool for cutting up wood to make a fire. I guess it beats carrying an Axe around.

Not as hot as the south, but as it is far away from the sea to act as a heat sink, the temperatures can get very high. The Ghoul's rounds might be hollow points. Hollow points are easy to make and basically blow out as they impact flesh make a very large exit wound because of the air pressure released on impact. They don't often have the ability to go through multiple targets unless the muzzle velocity is very very high, but it's based on a video game so some leeway is given.

In the first two Fallout games you could load your guns with special ammo types, including AP (armor piercing), FMJ (Full Metal Jacket), and JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) for various different special damage types and effects. Later games even had HE (High Explosive) rounds, so I imagine they just giving The Ghoul whatever ammo makes sense for the "best" scene(s). And clearly the producers have the Bloody Mess perk activated.

So the reason some things like the bullets and the healing stimpacks don’t quite seem realistic is because they simply aren’t. Fallout is a video game and instead of trying to make everything make sense in the real world they just opted to keep it like the game. A stimpack will return your health just as simply as it does in the game.

Here is the description from the actual game: "“ With the Bloody Mess perk, characters and creatures you kill will often explode into a red, gut-ridden, eyeball-strewn paste. Fun! Oh, and you'll do 5% more damage with all weapons."

And Fallout games have a perk system. Fallout 4's is different because it is fully merged with the skill system, but Fallout 3, 4 and New Vegas all had perk systems. If you are old enough to have played Fallout 1 & 2, they also had perk systems, where a perk was gained every 3 levels.

I know several of the locations. Filly is a bit south of me in NJ. It has lots of old cars and planes you see. I understand they set up an area for Filly just for the series, but I haven’t been there since the series was filmed. Many of the other locations are north of me in NY state.

Maximus let Titus die for three reasons. 1. The most important is that Titus was a coward and asshole that didn't live up to how a knight of the brotherhood of steel is supposed to live his life. Maximus viewed him as a fraud and not worthy of the armor/position. 2. Titus living would have resulted in his very painful death. 3. Maximus wants to help the world. He wants to be the knight that lives to better the fallen world.

The ability to avoid the turrets is based on the stats of the player. Fallout being an RPG, it's half based on skill, and half on the die roll. It's therefore possible to have good luck and avoid them. It's a nice "nod" to the game.
