I tested all four minivans on the market. Each has its strengths. The Carnival had the best technology gizmos. The Sienna had the best fuel economy. The Pacifica and the Odyssey drove and handled the best. The Carnival and the Odyssey carry the most. It all depends on your priorities. Edit: These are big ungainly vehicles, so handling and maneuverability is an important safety feature. The Odyssey and Pacifica are very drivable. The Carnival is meh. And I actively disliked and didn’t exactly feel safe driving the Sienna. Which is a real shame because Siennas a couple of generations ago had excellent driving dynamics. I came within inches of getting a top-end 2010 Sienna because it was almost perfect. In fact, I’d say that 2010 Sienna was better than any minivan currently on the market (for me at least). Excellent combination of space, powerful engine, reliability, handling, ease of operation, had a backup camera, and even a tight turning radius. Only downside was meh fuel economy. I sometimes wish I had bought it. Edit 2: One thing to think about is the Odyssey’s ground clearance. It is very small. That’s one of the reasons it has good handling. But it means you’ll scrape the bottom a lot more than with other minivans. That’s one of the reasons I didn’t get it.
@take5DD2 жыл бұрын
That's right. You hit it on the head. Everything comes with a price. Sienna? 35mpg. Great. But it comes at a cost. Much lower cargo space and weak 4 cyl engine. If you don't care about styling and tech, go with the Honda. If you need to get the best mileage? Go with the Sienna. I have to bypass on the Chrysler because of the reliability issue. In the end, I chose the Carnival. Comfort, styling, tech, powerful, spacious...the most bang for the buck.

@masu_masu Жыл бұрын
@@rwood930 My last 2 cars were Odysseys, and I loved them! Just purchased a KIA Carnival, and I'm missing my Odyssey. The Carnival is a nice car, don't get me wrong, but the lack of storage in the front 2 seats is super annoying (nowhere for driver's bag or purse), the cupholders only fit narrow bottles (?!?! in a family car??), and the trim on the front dash in front of the 1st row passenger seat got scratched by a backpack within 48 hours of us bringing the KIA home... which NEVER happened in either of my Odysseys which I drove at minimum 8+ years each (transporting 3+ kids at a time). For KIA, you have to push a button for opening the car, but my Honda you just touched the door knob (1 less step, not a huge deal, but just smoother/more intuitive). Ditto for location of buttons to close 2nd row sliding doors -- on Honda, visibly from when you are outside of the car, but on Kia, on inside of door and can only really see it when inside the car, which is weird because as a parent, I'm using that button from the outside when I get my kids out of the middle and back rows. As far as entertainment (screens), the KIA screens are positioned in a horrendous way on the rear of the 1st row headrests, and we didn't get them because they looked like they could easily get ripped off by getting stuck in a kid's backpack or sports gear bag just getting in and out of the car. The KIA's double moon roof is odd, and I prefer the simplicity of the Honda moonroof and not having to worry if a kid randomly opens/forgets to close the 2nd moon roof. Re: driving, I feel like my Odyssey was more responsive (both in accelerating AND in breaking). I was seduced by the *seemingly* nicer tech options (adaptive cruise, auto-high beams) on the Carnival (like it was more up to date than the Odyssey), but if I could go back to August when we bought our KIA, knowing what I know now, I would go back to my Odyssey in a heartbeat! KIA may seem flashier trim and tech-wise and slightly cheaper than Odyssey (when looking at same features on both cars), but don't be fooled... 3 months in and 3 long road trips plus daily driving to/from school and after school activities, I long for my Odyssey because it was better thought out, more functional, more intuitive (driver controls/info screen/button placement), slightly better acceleration/braking, and MORE DURABLE interior which is really important when carting around kids and teens with lots of stuff. Again, the Carnival is a very nice car, and I know a lot of this seems like splitting hairs. Maybe I was just too used to Odyssey layout after having 2 in a row and I'm being unfair to the Carnival?

While the KIA is well done, as a former traffic collision investigator, I have to take issue with the location of the rear turn signals. With more and more drivers distracted by their phones and "infotainment" systems, brake lights need to be as obvious as possible, especially if there is snow.

Great review. Love the side by side, feature by feature approach. Others tend to sort of, compile it all then offer subjective comparisons and recommendations. We drove both today and liked the Kia’s drive, seemingly higher front seat position, infotainment, and overall look over the Odyssey. Only real knock on the Kia was the lack of front cubby space. My wife’s purse ends up sitting at the feet and takes up comfort space on trips so the cubby with the Odyssey would be nice. Also the lack of side by side movement with the 2nd row seats in the Kia were a bummer. With two kid seats, getting to the back row will be really tough in the Kia. We figure we may put them middle and side seats so one seat can easily be popped forward for 3rd row access. Anyway, really appreciate your studious and subjective approach.

I’m looking at both these vehicles. And the biggest thing other than price pushing me towards the Carnival is the placement of the rear vents. Hondas are awkwardly placed behind the seats in front of them. And I’ve heard the air flow is horrible and possibly just forced air not even conditioned. Carnivals are in the ceiling. Carnival also has a custom button on the steering wheel you can assign to the cabin camera. I’d be interested to know how their ground clearances compare because I go down a lot of unpaved/gravel/dirt roads This was a great video 👍🏼

@SuperP1232 жыл бұрын
As a 7 year (two different models) odyssey’s owner I can say the vent placement is awful! If your child is rear facing they will sweat unless you prestart your van. It is the absolute fail on this vehicle especially if you live in Texas! Also stay away from 2018. I had easily 5 recalls then had my fuel injectors fail . Also, had a battery issue following that which took 3 different visits to finally get replaced (under warranty as this all happened at 26k ). This did not steer me away though as I ended up purchasing a 2021 odyssey as their features were easily top of the line at the time. Now the carnival is new and I have not checked it out fully but they have my interest although the side to side seat feature is sooooo nice on the odyssey. Funny enough dome are features you said the Odyssey didn’t have. Vented seats, power folding mirrors and 11 speaker sound system were features on my 2019 Touring. Perhaps the difference is that in Canada we only have one Touring trim level that I believe is equal to a US Touring Elite. Before my 5 Odyssey’s I owned a Kia Sedona EX-L. It was a great van but it’s clear that the Carnival shows that Kia has come a long way.

We ended up going with KIA after and have owned it now happily for over a 1 year. We're not prolific drivers (it's become more of a weekend car) but we're very happy with the decision. We test drove ALL 4 major brands before buying and as other commenters have noted, each brand has its features that others lack. The right decision will be based on the tradeoffs of those features as per your family's needs (as opposed to being a loyal patron to one badge/brand over the other). As a driver, I wanted the driver centric safety features in the SX Prestige like blind-spot cluster cameras along with the huge amount of space, superior exterior styling, and quality of the interior we found in the Kia at comparable trim levels in the other cars. The car still feels great, is easy to clean and maintain, and gets compliments from my fellow luxury 3-row SUV-owning friends and family. that OR they're just being kind since i've "settled" on a minivan :)

I think they should embrace the minivan styling rather than try to hide it. kia interior has way too much piano black that likely won't age well. and that's ultimately what your daily interaction will be with. you'll be staring at dust, finger prints, and scratches. sure the Honda uses it as well, but looks to be much less. also, I know this is subjective and Kia likely puts out a decent product, I'll trust the Honda to be a better vehicle 10+ yrs and 150-250k miles into ownership. of you only own for 3-5 yrs, either one will probably be great. all that said I'd still cross shop against a Toyota. wish Lexus made a van. The weakness of the odyssey is the sliding doors. They use plastic wheels for the mid rollers. Odyssey drives like a car, easy to drive, with a smooth 3.5L engine that still is strong. Reg oil maintenance, and once a yr I change the tranny fluid. In a couple of yrs, I'll be looking for another vehicle - Kia may be in the list, but with Korean cars - not sure of the parts availability etc, though it has a 10 yr warranty which is very attractive.

The Kia has that Suv appearance certain people won’t drive a van because we’ll it looks like a van. This should do well.

I wish Honda would make the Odyssey look more like the Carnivals exterior. I hateee the look of a minivan.
@rower2169 Жыл бұрын
You can also spin the 2nd row Carnival's seats 180 degrees to face the rear. No other modern minivan can do that. This never seems to get mentioned.
@_WayfaringStranger Жыл бұрын
The minivan is crashed tested with rear seats facing forward. In the USA it is not recommended to rotate seats as it could be less safe in a crash.
@L.L Жыл бұрын
And I actually don’t think you can. The put little plastic blocker in America to prevent that
@rower2169 Жыл бұрын
@L.L there is a video on KZbin of how to do it. Takes ~10 minutes if you own a pliers.
@rower2169 Жыл бұрын
@_WayfaringStranger US regulations are largely based on seatbelts which don't concurrently adjust for rotating seats. The Carnival seat belts are integrated with each seat to avoid that issue. Reports and studies out of the EU show rear facing seats are actually safer.

Does the Carnival have a start up key with a computer chip in it? I understand California is suing an auto company because their keys have no computer chip which makes them super easy to steal. Just curious.

The KIA's turn signal location is a danger. If they moved it up; and added AWD; I'd buy one right now.. all mini vans are missing something that's a deal breaker and pissing me off. Honda and Kia need AWD; the Sienna has low power; no spare tire; and non-removable 2nd row.. Chrysler will break in about 2 months and depreciate in value i about 4 days..

I like the odessey it's the only van that has a place for a woman to put a purse I've in other vans and friends have to put there poured. In the back of the van the only van that thinks of a woman and has a place for that a man could use it to if they have a brief case
