These petty little people in planning departments should be taken to task by some authority. These people are saving a part of the local history and should be helped. You see this time and time again and it's insane. If people are willing to take on these projects and save these old buildings then they should be supported every step of the way.

George Clarke is the best host for this kind of show ever..He really gets what it is all about. But why any one would tolerate the jobsworths and grief of officialdom in the UK is the biggest wonder ever. It is not that in the end of thing they help save buildings and there has to thousands of them that have been lost to the stupidity and ignorance of so called 'planners'

The red tape here is wild when it comes to planning but it also helps to save the character of places as well. I think it is sad that planning takes so long and is difficult. But it prevents cases like one local to me where a very wealthy family bought a high victorian home and tore out all the crown moulding, floors and original parts to the house. But because they were "only" fines 200,000 they were fine with it.

@@Timeisirrelevant Architectural Historians like myself care very much. They are disappearing extremely quickly, I didn't say your basic run of the mill Victorian did I? I said a High Vicotrian, a home of very specific Architectural design. The red tape is to prevent listed houses from becoming run of the mill new builds

Thanks for a great show George. Love the brickwork on this conversion, when I saw the computer model I thought "what?? how ugly" but Jan has done an amazing job project managing, Mothering, her own business, and who knows what else.."wouldnt do project managing in a million years??" You've already done it Jan. And done it well!! But seriously if your hubby doesnt get out and walk and lose that gut he wont be around to enjoy it...he's a heart attack waiting to happen!! I hope you both have life insurance and the house is well insured..not meaning to be nasty but just stating a fact...I hope you all get to enjoy your dream home together....

You Tube comments aren't usually so negative. (I've been guilty of same, at times) The thing is: We're all just doing the very best we can with what we've got, every day. Life can be glorious, but also a very hard slog. No one outside, of that person, can judiciously estimate what another person, or family, is actually dealing with.

I absolutely love this farm house, they did an amazing job. Love it. I've watched a fair amount of episodes thus far, and it sure does sound as though the planning commission needs to be investigated. They are borderline negligent in their efforts to work with their community. It appears as though ever episode all they seem to do is impose an incredible amount of grief and heart ache upon anyone who presents plans to the planning commission. Its like everyone walks away completely overwhelmed from their experience with the commission. let alone the money and time that they lose dealing with these dipsticks. Its like they purposely impose road blocks that make is extremely difficult for anyone. Folks must want to just pack it in and refuse and not want to proceed with their dreams for real. What stubborn incompetence and unprofessional these standards present to people. I do understand things should be built to safety standards and not to look like eyes sores but they go too bloody far with their stupid rules that have the time make no bloody sense. I've never seen anything like it before, in my entire life, Its borderlines insanity. There's got to be a simpler way, the system beyond broken. They need to find a way to work with folks in a more smoother more efficient manner that works for everyone ..The commission should have their own draftsmen work with the people to makes things work smoother because what their doing isn't working! holy shit...

Its intentionally designed that way. The longer the planning commission takes the more hoops and legal fees get added to the homeowners who are just trying to do the right thing. You are right it is negligent albeit intentional and it should be investigated and done away with. However, they don't make as much money for doing their jobs so they wont -_-

I could not imagine myself dealing with English Heritage or the Conservation Trust on listed buildings. I, personally, think that such bodies are too intrusive as to what people are allowed to do with their home interiors thereby increasing stress and cost for the homeowners. These officials should show more consideration and gratitude to those who are willing and committed to saving listed buildings.

Hats off to the husband who works from 4:30am till 9pm to make his wife’s dream come true. Borrowing another 250,000 is scary considering his age and the fact she doesn’t contribute financially to the family’s financials. They focus so much on Jan and her stresses… they forget to mention her husband, it really made me sad for him. It was rude she made a point about throwing away his ex wife’s curtains on television, painted a very selfish person in my opinion.
