Who doesn’t know that it’s not racist to dislike something? The problem is most of the people that dislike it use that disdain to make racist comments which is why people think that in some cases.

W take. I’m a guy who mostly listens to hip hop, and I’m fine with people mildly disliking it as long as they have a good reason to back it up. But it’s not cool at all when people trash on hip hop cuz it’s mostly dominated by Black artists.

It also doesn’t help that a lot of people will say they don’t like hip hop and then follow it by a couple of white rappers as exceptions (Eminem, NF, etc.) I don’t think that’s particularly racist, but I think it does come from a lack of understanding or appreciation for black culture.

I remember when I, a sheltered white kid from rural America, first heard Eminem's "The Way I Am." I knew he was a rapper and that was it. I'd never heard rap before. Somehow my brain turned his vocals low pitched, ominous and scary. It felt like a huge guy looming over me while the song was playing. Obviously that's ridiculous given the man's vocal style but the moment I found out he was white, somehow all of that went away. The reality distortion field of racism is very real. A lot of people hear rap beats or black voices and have a very loaded reaction based on race that they have to retrofit as a legitimate one based on the music. The song may be clever, lyrically intricate and sensitive, but they just hear thug shit. And when they hear a MAGA rapper who's coming from the same place as them politically, they're not defensive so they suddenly listen semi-objectively and realize they like some rap. Which ultimately isn't much different from middle school me who had to put in work and thought to truly hear music coming from outside my culture for what it was. If they're adults and still thinking this way it may be too late. They're always going to see the scrawny teenage kid as a linebacker or a rhinoceros about to charge.

It’s more of a cultural difference than racial. These people love Tom Macdonald because he regurgitates right wing talking points. People love Eminem because he is one of, if not the best white rapper, which to a lot of white people, makes it easier to connect to someone. Like a suburban white kid isn’t going to resonant with TPAB. Now it may evolve into race at some point, but it’s almost always a cultural difference, especially at first.
@eliesutter4156
@eliesutter4156 11 ай бұрын
@@id1550 I'm going to answer both comments qt once. I'm from europe, France specifically, so I'm certain growing up in a non-english speaking country plays a part in how I experience this, in that most people couldn't care less about english lyrics. But still, being a white suburban boy didn't prevent me from becoming a metal AND rap fan. I absollutely, along most of my friends, adore Mac Miller, whose music and lyrics (i learned english at a young age) really resonated with me. But I also love guys like DMX, Wu-Tang and Tyler, because 1. Bangers 2. They convey a humanity and life experience that I'm not acustomed to and make me see things from another point of view. And it really feels different when someone praises the white rapper but shits on the rest. Also, more often than not, if you dig deep enough you'll hear them discard prominent rappers as thug music, agressive, dumb and so on with all the racist undertones that go with it. Thinking about it having written all this, I believe the language barrier doesn't even play a part in the end . I have a french specific example of the same thing at hand. Our rap scene is huge here and the same thing that happens for american rappers happens for our own too. I often hear Booba (the most prominent figure of french "Gangsta rap") being called "musique de racaille" (music for thugs), while Orelsan (white rapper from Normandy) gets praised by absolutely everyone and their moms for being a musical and lyrical genius (which he is) So yeah I feel like there's a connection with racism. On the other hand, race issues don't look quite the same in the US as they do here. So we might both be right.
@id1550
@id1550 11 ай бұрын
@@eliesutter4156 It’s close to racism but I don’t truly believe most are being racist. Most people are ignorant and do not care about/want to hear other people’s life experiences; me included before listening to rap. I don’t think it is racist to empathize with people who are similar to you, and race is a big part of that. Just because Eminem is white, already provides a head start for white people that black people don’t grant, and even more so vice versa. I kind of was the same, but it was because I didn’t believe I could ever resonate with that type of music. Even now, it’s hard to empathize with artists talking about issues I have never experienced before, and I feel like this is something that is very important to people, which is why they don’t listen. Also I think listening to something of a different language is very different when talking about meanings and messages behind the lyrics. A song recorded in English, Japanese, Spanish, etc etc. Are all different languages, but all those songs could have the exact same meanings and messages. And even then, if you don’t even understand what you’re listening to, it is a very different feeling than understanding something, but not being able to empathize with the artist. The latter is a worse feeling imo. I’m not going to discredit your experiences, but I promise you it is mostly *not* racism.

On the topic of "Hip-hop represents the worst of black culture" that I hear a lot. From ATCQ, to early Kanye, to Cole and Kendrick, every period of Hip-hop has had artists reach worldwide acclaim without pushing negative aspects of "Black culture" and have actually used a black art form to spread positivity If you aren't a fan of the sound of the genre, that's fine. @Obi-WanKannabis the funny thing is you are committing logical fallacies in your reply. You literally responded that hip hop glamorizes all these things on a comment where someone literally shows that not all hip hop artist do those things. But you are treating a portion of the whole as if it is the whole. This is a fallacy of composition. To your point about "pointing that out," the people who make that claim tend to ignore their own logic when their logic doesn't fit the narrative they are trying to push. For instances, a lot of people that try to make that point ignore the same topics used in the music they like. There are musicians in the rock, metal, country, and just about every other music genre that glamorize violence, casual sex, and drug usage. These are not topics exclusive to only hip hop.

12:00 I hate to be “that guy” but the stories about the Rite of Spring premiere sparking a riot are considered to be urban legends. In actuality, the “riot” was just heckling and laughter and those jeers weren’t directed at the music but rather the ballet-choreography, which the audience considered to be inelegant and goofy (likely because Nijinsky was heavily influenced by folk dance). Aside from some snooty reviews, Stravinsky’s music was applauded from the get-go.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The two most disparaged music genres are Rap and Country. One is "black" and one is "white" (even though both are enjoyed by all races and have artists of many races). Both seem to be the subject of more scrutiny than other genres and much of the criticism seems aimed more at the cultures and listeners than it does the music itself. I've heard lots of people say they dislike rap and they definitely were making insinuations and that is rightfully called out. Sadly, the same is not done for country. When people attack country, plenty of them (not all) are basically saying they think southerners are stupid, ignorant, fat, uneducated, obsessed with trucks & beer, etc. Yet these people seem to have never heard of Johnny Cash, for example. It is just a strange irony to me, that two of the genres of music that are PERCIEVED to be the most racialized are also the ones that get the most flak.
@malcolme9780
@malcolme9780 11 ай бұрын
Also both hip hop and country was from the start pretty eclectic genres. Country was basically started from combining American folk music ("white music") and blues music ("black music") while hip hop been pretty open with its electronic influences through the year. The pioneers of the genres were obviously very open to experimenting with different sounds and genres from different cultures yet both genres been described as "racist music" by those who oppose them
@yurifairy2969

The problem with this comparison is that much of today's pop country music explicitly endorses ignorant, even racist messages. There's no rap songs about lynching white people at the top of the charts, and there never will be, but country music goes nearly that far regularly and the country audience eats it up.

These two genres are also so polarizing because they are so very similar yet appeal to a very different demographic. Country music was for the poor rural folk (the vast majority of which are white) and rap music was for the poor urban folk (the vast majority of which are black). Country music (originally) served to tell the stories of the working class folks out in the middle of nowhere struggling to get by. It started with folks who really lived the lifestyle but was taken over by rich assholes who threw some cowboy boots on and grabbed a microphone. Rap/Hip-Hop (originally) served to tell the stories of the working class (and even less fortunate) inner city folks struggling to get by. It started with folks who really lived the lifestyle but has been taken over by rich assholes who threw some Jordans on and grabbed a microphone. The cultures these genres appeal to also causes a lot of polarization as they are very similar yet very different. First off - gun culture. Both genres promote the use, sale, distribution, and possession of firearms - and often both genres also support the idea of not registering said firearms with the government. However, country music tends to support the use of these weapons for legitimate purposes (hunting, self protection) first and blatant murder second. Rap music tends to do the opposite - blatant murder first (yes, drug related gun violence counts as murder) and legitimate purposes second. Secondly - drug culture. Both genres promote substance abuse like hell. Every. Damn. Song. Country music tends to promote alcoholism, although modern country music and Willie Nelson supports marijuana usage. Cocaine has been mentioned from time to time in country music but not very often. Rap music tends to promote the use of cocaine and marijuana alongside alcohol (although alcohol in rap music is almost always centered around social settings) and modern rap music refers to the use of drugs like heroin sometimes. Next up - sex culture. This is probably the biggest difference in the genres as country music tends to promote the ideas of long term relationships over temporary hook-ups. Country music also tends to promote traditional family values and by and large treats cheating as a bad thing even when the artist is the one doing the cheating. That said, the “bro-country” era helped push country more toward hook-up culture - but in a less vulgar manner. Rap music has pretty much objectified women, promoted sexual deviance, and supported the ideas of fatherless homes and hook-up culture throughout its existence. Like I said though, country is getting that way (the history as to why rap music likely supports such vile ideology so consistently is far more interesting than this comment section will ever be, and should be something all of us are aware of - because this phenomenon among black Americans started sometime in the 1970s shortly before rap music came to be). Finally - both genres are quite conservative, really. How? Don’t black folks all vote Democrat? Well, that’s racist to assume all black folks vote the same way, but yes, a lot of black folks do vote Democrat and seeing how conservative most really are, it doesn’t make a lot of sense, but here goes… like I said above, both genres are full of gun nuts who would rather gun laws be more lax than they are. Both genres are very very homophobic (although rap music tends to be more friendly toward lesbians -see “objectification of women”). Despite the debauchery of either genre, both genres and their respective cultures tend to be Christian - or at least Christian identifying. Both genres express a disdain for child support enforcement (more so in rap music) not only because deadbeat dads but also child support’s role in enabling the destruction of the family. Both genres, despite being full of support for substance abuse, have plenty of artists expressing disdain for the different drug epidemics affecting our youth. Both genres express a hatred - or at the very least an unwelcoming attitude - toward people from outside their respective ways of life. Neither genre quite understands the other, and the cultures depicted in either genre dont necessarily care to understand the other. The country folk are convinced the inner city folk are a bunch of gang bangin’ pieces of shit and the inner city folk are all convinced the country folk will hang them on the first tree they see. Maybe it’s because country music is associated with the south? I don’t know. But yeah, two very similar yet very different demographics represent by two very similar yet very different genres of music - no wonder they’re so polarizing.

personally I'm pretty picky about hip hop just because of what I tend to prioritize with music. I'm not a huge lyrics guy, I also tend to really like melody and harmony and I'm a sucker for a catchy hook, so a song that is predominantly a beat and a lot of rapping where like the main appeal is the lyrics I tend not to like as much, same goes for a lot of really minimal singer-songwriter stuff, it just tends not to do it for me. Of course there are still plenty of catchy melodic hip hop songs, Run, Run, Run by McKinley Dixon was one of my favorite songs last year and was constantly in my head.

I mostly dislike rap music because they tend to be pretty long winded. Plus the beat usually stays the same with some pretty repetitive vocal patterns interlaced. Im a metalhead, and obviously there are long winded songs, but they tend to have some ebbs and flows throughout. Whether that be a riff, a chug, a cool vocal line, or an ambient section, I just find theres more interesting variation with how its presented. There are some hip hop artists I do enjoy. Such as: Nas, Deltron 3030, Busdriver, Aesop rock, Immortal technique, Wu tang, dead prez. Im also a fan of Clipping, which is a relatively new artist. Again though, I dont like much beyond that. The thing is that drugs and violence in rap music have been consistently criticized within the black community since the gangster rap genre was established so by itself this still isn't racist. But not all hip hop or rap music touches on those subjects, and lots of it is critical of those elements of culture. It IS racist to imply that hip hop, by Virtue of being black music, only has that to offer, when anyone who isn't racist knows that isn't the case.

There are thousands of very famous household names who represent the variety within hip hop so you'd have to characterise them based on something other than their image or their content in order to come to the conclusion their music is just about drugs, sex, and guns. The "mainstream" representation you're talking about only exists within right wing discourses like fox news bulletins or whatever. Even rappers who ARE gangsters don't present themselves like that to the actual mainstream media most of the time. I’m curious about which circles of metalheads are hating on the blues. This news disappoints me, as I’d say my greatest musical obsessions are in metal in most of its forms and folk music, primarily as a result of loving blues early in my musical journey. If you ask me, some blues songs go toe-to-toe with metal in their depictions of a bleak reality and the heavy attitude because it’s based in a tangible reality and experiences (this can also be applied to some styles of rap and punk as well).
@theyabib3323
@theyabib3323 11 ай бұрын
@@thirtyyearoldmulberryfield I agree. It's just a different angle of expressing this bleak reality is all. In blues, I find, it's more personal and everything. And portrayed through an angle of personal experience, and it's coping with it by letting it all out in the form of, not quite sadness but... Blues. Instead in metal I often find the lyrics themselves to express those topics more generally about the world. And the music as a way of coping with rage. But that's just my interpretation. What I'm saying is, the reason some people hate on certain styles of music is that we all have these locked-in ideas about *how* music should be, when in reality, the beauty of the whole thing is that there is soooo much music for sooo many different purposes. Even then, as you explained metalheads who don't really appreciate the rich culture of it, don't understand it's contexts or even the simple fact it's a cornerstone to all forms of rock music, without it, no metal.

I wonder if the album being approachable would even be a factor if you had never heard music before. I would genuinely love to see someone who had never heard music before react to Sing To God. Without expectations about what music is supposed to sound like, maybe they'd never have to get over the hurdle of it sounding "weird" or noisy

I can tell "i dont like rap" is coded when someone says She Loves You has more lyrical depth than "any of the shit these days" or that "they push a button that plays for them" or "the vocals dont have a melody so its not even music" Like the second they to claim theres an objective and all-encompassing standard that all of it falls short on and that its for talentless nobodies, i get little blips on my radar

Fun fact. That single dropped the day after I’d lost my first match in a martial arts tournament that I’d been training my ass off for. Didn’t cry because of the lyrical content (at first haha), but cried from laughing so hard at the irony. LOVED their album as well, “Stride Rite”was my song of the year.

11:02 i think someone entirely new to music could handle "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" off of Abbey Road. here's why: the first LP i remembering hearing was Pat Metheny Group's Letter from Home. i was 3. everything before that was nursery rhymes, sung or recorded. PMG's balearic jazz fusion was really exciting and pleasant, and was the first time i internalized that hey, music does actually exist. Side A closer "5-5-7" gets a bit moody, but has a midsection that matches the brightness of the rest of that side. but Side B gives us "Are We There Yet", an epic with foreboding ass chord changes, ominous tribal percussion, and a synth guitar solo that nearly resembles an elephant's cry. After an absolutely furious climax, the song drifts in ambience for 4 straight minutes, mutating slowly from uncertainty and creepiness, to probably the warmest blanket of synth chords possible as follower "Vidala" opens. "Vidala" is a slice of Argentinian folk with the same kind of drumming and ominous synth pads, but i guess having a vocal and a pan flute solo helped soothe things over. And then the album continues afterward as if those moments didn't happen. It was so eye-opening to have a taste of something that at the time felt truly terrifying. that music could be designed to stimulate as well as placate. that it could tell its own stories with twists, developments, rather than blankly convey a happy mood. my dad dubbed a copy of the CD on cassette for me, and i've kept it ever since. Even got Metheny's signature on the J-card dad wrote the tracklist onto.

Big hip hop fan here. Let's be clear though, someone not liking hip hop because of the violence and street life it often portrays isn't racist, it's perfectly legitimate. I don't know if any other genre has contributed to as many violent deaths as hip hop. A large section of hip hop really is about drugs, violence and fucking, disproportionately so in the mainstream.

I tried to get into hip-hop. But like outside of a fun party song (in da club, ruff ryders anthem, etc..) I just don't enjoy it. I put on Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, I try to listen to their albums. But I just can't relate, the music doesn't speak to me. End up switching to Hard Rock or Metal, and rocking out instead. 🤷🏻

Hating hip hop isn't racist but people who are quick to inform you with very little prompting of how much they hate hip hop specifically while having no other strong opinions on music generally are, to say the least, extremely suspect.

I think it's weird to think of the evolution of music as something linear and in order to "get" later developments you have to listen to their origin points first. The things that sound weird or forward thinking to us in many cases only do so because it's outside of what we consider normal and that in turn is formed by the things we are most regularly exposed to. Even something like Pulse Demon makes perfect sense if you have the right expectation for what music is. It's not weird to me at all that there are people that create abstract and abrasive soundscapes because it mirrors what's happening in other forms of art as well so I know to expect it.

I think the problem with bagpipes is they're not meant to be played indoors or blared into a microphone. They're meant to be played outdoors. You're meant to pass them on the street while you're window shopping in the city, and you're meant to hear them droning from some distant hill on a misty morning. It's a scientific fact that allies love bagpipes and actually feel less pain when listening to bagpipes, and enemies hate bagpipes and feel annoyed or demoralised by it, so... to those who hate bagpipes, it is actually a you problem.

I struggle to get into rap, it just doesn't usually work for me. As far as hip-hop and rap I've enjoyed once in awhile it's Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Beastie Boys, Childish Gambino, clipping, and Tech N9ne. What else should I try to get further into the genre? For reference point, I'm super into rock. Pink Floyd, King Gizzard, Geese, Zeppelin, Funkadelic, etc.

Look into ‘the wake up show freestyle’ albums (8 volumes), Soundbombing (3 albums) and Lyricists Lounge (2 albums). Find some artists between those that you find appealing and look into artists similar to them. I don’t know what you are looking for exactly but with the names you listed I could suggest Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Wordsworth, Chino XL, Copywrite, Planet Asia, Gangstarr just as a handful of examples. You’ll see some of these guys on the albums I mentioned above.

On the subject of bagpipes not fitting in modern music, I have to call bullcookies on that one. It can and does work, there's just not many bands doing it. There's a greek band called Thrax Punks or ΘΡΑΞ ΠΑΝΚC who do a modern rock ish take on greek folk music, which extensively features a greek bagpipe called a gaida and I love it.

I don’t really like rap music. The general tonality and melodies don’t really hit me in the right way. It’s also mostly a static genre with little to no shifts, and I love my dynamics. That being said there are some songs and some artists that have really impressed me, just more often than not it’s all very one dimensional to me.
