The origin of the Android Human Torch is pretty interesting when you take into account that Namor is a mutant. Most modern mutant bigotry comes from Namor attacking New York while regular superheroes are respected because of the Android Human Torch.

Wanna hear something funny? In the MC2 universe (the one where Spider-girl appeared), T'Challa's son became a hero called Coal Tiger. He had the ability to transform into a were-panther and was a member of the world's Avengers.

Simple: He's in a strange new type of flying craft that moves in ways he's unfamiliar with. The book mentions how incredibly fast the vehicle moves and we see Reed doing some maneuvers that could be unusually smooth or effortless for a flying machine.

I am personally more fond of the way BP was introduced in the FF 90s show: instead of luring them with a gift, he attacks them in their home and makes them chase him back to Wakanda. he acts completely by himself in the steel jungle: the first hit splits the team, and then he goes after each of them, one by one. He takes the individual members out in the exact same way and order as in the comic, the difference being Reed frees Johnny, who then thaws Ben, and then the 4 of them together capture him. the second half of the episode deals with Klaw and adapts the next issue. we get a preview spoiling the twist of a technology-driven society in the deep jungle, but it also sets up BPs motivation better, and the episode, I think, does a better job at showing BPs cunning and the FFs resourcefulness. no Wyatt Wingfoot, though, if anyone was curious

Aside from having very small eagle motif and living on a reservation at the beginning of the game, Delsin from Infamous Second Son is about the closest hero I can think of to what you want. No spirit animals, monologueing about nature or any of that stuff. He's just a delinquent who cares about his family and has fire, electricity, and concrete powers.

@@Schwartzbruder1 Forge had shaman training in addition to metahuman intelligence. Him summoning the spirits of the fallen (his own platoon I think) while fighting as an American soldier in Vietnam. Said magic backfiring is what cost him his arm and leg. To my knowledge his shaman training hasn't played into things... really at all since then. Mind you I'm not a regular follower of the X-Men, but none of the tv shows that had a version of Forge brought that aspect of his character along for the ride. He was just the resident hero tech expert.

So my local library has this Black Panther book from like 2005 that has four stories in it: One where T'Challa has to defuse Erik Killmonger raising an army in neighboring Niganda, one where Wakanda has to fend off a full-on Skrull invasion (which in my opinion was easily the most badass of the four), one where he almost dies and has to fight his way back from Limbo, and one where T'Challa's grandfather teams up with Captain America to fight Nazis in WW2 and gave Cap the idea for his iconic round shield. So yeah, Black Panther's awesome. Also T'Challa x Ororo is my OTP.

@@demi-fiendoftime3825 See, the library has another Black Panther book that I haven't checked out but I did skim through it and in doing so saw Ororo being judged by Bast as a bride for T'Challa, their wedding, and the after-party and it was really sweet (even Doctor Doom congratulated them!). In the story where T'Challa is trapped in Limbo it's Ororo who goes to take his place there, sacrificing her own life for him without hesitation. That's why the most upsetting thing I saw in Civil War 2 was the line "I can't believe you used to be married to that man, Ororo." Darth Vader: "NNOOOOOO!!"

@@JaelinBezel to be fair when they were first made a couple a lot of fans hated it for multiple reasons such as slight retcons to both Ororo and T'Challa's back story's, possibly because they were the two most well known black superhero's and hadn't really interacted enough with each other to warrant a romance, and other minor things that fans will pick out when they don't like something.

If Stan Lee's reason was just to make a black superhero, he did it right. He made a new character with his own set of villains and his own place in the world who is on equal footing with the other heroes. If you want more representation, make new characters with their own identities, don't supplant existing ones. Something current Marvel could really stand to learn.

5:15 - Eh... I'm gonna blame that one on Reed's use of the word "chieftain". Isn't T'Challa the KING of Wakanda? Both titles are descriptors of executive authority (and fine, apparently the Wakandans THEMSELVES use the term), but nobody thinks of a chieftain as being the head of a major technological superpower any more than a "dictator-for-life" as the ruler of a small village. One word just has more weight than the other. ...The Native Americans and their innate tracking skills... Okay, you got me there... lol "Over 10 years, T'Challa sold small amounts of vibranium to scientific institutions so he could get the incredible funding he needed to modernize Wakanda's technology." Thanks for that explanation. I'm not too familiar with this corner of the Marvel universe, and I don't remember the movie covering how Wakanda became the superpower that it is when it apparently engages in NO international trade whatsoever.

1:50 Real world politics doesn't have mutants with superpowers. Who precisely they represent (whether a particular sexuality, race, religion, or even a political class) is generally vague, and can move between them depending on the interpretation a particular author goes with. The X-Men movies kept them a metaphor for homosexuals (although given the triangle between Jean, Cyclops and Wolvie, that seems kinda weird) but other sources have them as metaphors for race (see Xavier and Magnetos' dynamic as it compares to MLK and Malcolm X) or religious groups (Magneto was literally a holocaust victim). I'm not as familiar with the comics, but I was under the impression they did a similar thing there despite the whole 'world outside your window' thing.

To be honest, I'm not all that impressed with The Black Panther almost taking out the FF in this issue. They were in his territory and he had all the time to prepare for them. They thought they were going on vacation as honored guests. It's like people talking about Batman's vaunted "prep time". It's great when you know exactly when and where the attack is going to be.

Disappointed that the Human Torch nobody cares about is apparently the other Marvel origin for this month. Presumably the other 2 episodes this month will be DC. Had a perfect opportunity to cover Giant-Size X-Men 1, as a followup to the X-Men 1 episode, with the first appearances of Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Thunderbird 1, and Magik (technically). It's basically a whole second origin for the X-Men, given how it made them what they are today. Or he could have covered Wolverine's first appearance as a follow-up to Hulk. I know Linkara is not an X-fan, but I hope he'll cover these next year or soon instead of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I don’t think equating Black Panther’s name to the “allegory” of the X-Men is quite the same. The parallels to the Civil Rights movement in X-Men are more thematic and subtle. Black Panther’s name is harder to hide. The trouble is the character has no connections to the political party, but it’d be easy for readers to make connections that aren’t there. I’m glad it was changed back so the character could stand on his own merits, though. Also, the themes of X-Men are intentional and good. Connecting this superhero to an extremist political party is neither.

Nothing against Black Panther, but I always felt that Luke Cage/Power Man was more of a noteworthy point in the history of black superheroes in that he was the first (that I can recall at least) major black superhero where his gimmick didn't involve being black. You can't pull off T'Chala's story with a white guy, but "former gang member gets framed for a crime and volunteers for mad science project that ends up giving him superpowers" could happen to a person of any ethnicity. Sure, him being black helped sell it, but it wasn't necessary like it is for T'calla.
