Yes physical purchases are the same thing. But the difference is especially with older games and games that are actually on the disc is that the disc is your license and no one's coming in your house to take your disc as a way ro revoke your license. Just to clear that up.
@cheater003 ай бұрын
This kind of thing is why Stop Killing Games is important. They are fighting for game ownership. Go to their page and sign the government-approved initiative, this is more important than anything. Go convince other people. If SKG is dead in the water, we all lose. If they succeed, they will continue fixing game ownership to the benefit of the consumer. It's probably the most important thing happening in the world of video games for at least a decade.
@CFWhitman3 ай бұрын
Actually, physical purchases are not just licenses. With physical purchases, you own your copy of the game (or movie or book). If you didn't, game stores couldn't sell used games. There is no license necessary to use a piece of software (or watch a movie or read a book), though publishers would like you to believe otherwise. Of course, ownership of your copy doesn't give you the right to distribute other copies. The copyright is still owned by the publisher. You can, however, legally sell your copy. You can find more information about this by searching "first sale doctrine.' One thing about digital licenses for games that many object to is that publishers prohibit their transfer, and thus take away the right of first sale. There is no statutory law that really addresses how digital licenses should work and what rights consumers should have. There has been some pressure to amend copyright law to cover digital copies more clearly.
@devilstrider2893 ай бұрын
@@CFWhitman it's clear you don't read those prompts that come up when you play a game. Yes, even when you buy a physical copy of a game, you are essentially purchasing a license to play the game, not outright ownership of the game itself; meaning you have the right to use the game under the terms of the license agreement, which is often included in the packaging or accessed digitally when you first launch the game. Look on the back of your cases and read the fine print as well. I just read the back of my Space Marine 2 and it clearly says it.

Ownership of a copy and ownership of the copyright are not inseparable. You can own a copy of something without owning the copyright, thus without having the right to make more copies of it for distribution. As far as EULA enforceability goes, there is basically no statutory law on the subject other than general contract law, which usually requires a signature or an in person agreement. However, case law regarding EULAs has generally been settled in the direction of what the jury or judge thought of as reasonable, rather than what is directly laid out (or not laid out) in statutory law. Generally EULAs in the US were considered completely unenforceable until _ProCD, Inc. vs. Zeidenberg (1996)._ However, in that case it was found that Zeidenberg had used information that ProCD had compiled at great expense, but was not copyrightable (basically names, addresses, and telephone numbers), and was republishing it at very little expense to themselves while undercutting ProCD's prices. This feels obviously unfair to ProCD, so the EULA which prohibited doing this was found to be enforceable (even this decision required an appeal to a higher court by ProCD). You can easily see why the court found as they did. ProCD was the company that invested in the aggregation of the information, so they are the ones who should profit from its availability. Most case law in regards to this subject ends up being decided in a similar way. If a EULA asks for something reasonable, then it is found to be enforceable, but if not, then it won't be. There are obviously unenforceable terms to the point of being silly that you could slip into EULAs and which would be found not to be enforceable, such as giving up custody of your firstborn child to the company CEO, or some such thing. However, there are also things that companies can try to slip in which are just inappropriate, such as forbidding the publication of a negative review, or transferring the ownership of the copy to someone else. In any case, a EULA is not required to exist for a piece software in order to use it. Plenty of software has been sold with just the protection of copyright law. EULAs are just something that software companies add for their own purposes. Rarely do they accomplish anything that copyright law doesn't already enforce, other than granting extra rights, such as having several people be able to use a program on different computers at the same time, which is normally prohibited by copyright. Of course, digital distribution is treated differently, as I have said before.

Valve is just cutting out the middle man in those regions. They are not doing store fronts. And I feel certain that is always going to be the case.

yeaaaah, Junk Store was completely wiped from Steam Store, I guess it would be expected that Valve don't want other stores to be used instead of theirs 😥😥

I'm fully capable of pirating my content if necessary. I buy from Steam because I like the service and like the community. If Steam ever goes rogue, I have DRM-free backups of many of my favorite games which I can fall back on.

I want them to drop a standalone VR headset that was rumored for the longest time lol Also, a big win for GoG given how they been operating since day 1. I need to use their GoG Galaxy launcher more often tbh (and look into getting a high capacity hard drive to backlog my libraries).

We need steam box or steam console with steam os. 1080/60 or 1440p/60 capable hardware. Then devs/studios will hopefully then jump on board of supporting stems os/Linux more. There also Rumours they working on vr capable box.

Why not just use a regular gaming PC that launches steam in big picture mode automatically? You can even install Linux on it if you want. It's basically the same experience
@miuletzmitzu66413 ай бұрын
But why? You can get a PC, fairly cheap too (plenty of good gaming builds for 500$ new, with RX6600 and such) and install Bazzite on it. That's literally your Steam console.

@@miuletzmitzu6641 Yes I know could build one. I have my own built game pc. But Prices for cpu and GPU here are still kinda high. It’s just be nice of Valve released a official steam box/console with steam os. Then more devs would slowly jump on board and support more. Instead of windows only bs. I would love upgrade my old GTX 1080ti. But even 6900xt here is still $900+ Canadian or more. Prices are slowly coming down but still not enough imo. A 3090 is still $2100+ Canadian lol make no sense. More then new 4080 which $1800+ last I check my local computer store. And wouldn’t touch any RTX 4xxx as they all cut down version at primer price. And 4090 is only one not cut down but it’s bomb ready go off or cook it self lol. Not worth it.

@@miuletzmitzu6641 Gaming PC handhelds are also nothing new. Same for gaming HTPCs. The point is that it's as plug-n-play as it gets, plus a defined platform for devs to target (parts vendor, level of performance, etc) the way the Steam Deck has been. That's why Valve already tried years ago with the Steam Machines, after all.
@reisshep3 ай бұрын
The problem with Steam Machines was the fact that there was way too much hardware to optimize for so it would only make sense if they sold a single SKU, which in this day and age is nonsensical so the Steam Deck is a better option.

I posted a while back one time when you were sponsored by Baseus. Their battery bank was proven by a reviewer, with documentation, that they weren't worthwhile. I posted the findings and you replied that they were okay to proceed with. Later, I deleted that comment and bought a Baseus battery bank. The battery bank has failed and I am disappointed. Baseus sucks. Battery in question was Baseus Power Bank, 65W 20000mAh Obviously this is on me but damn

I love GOG and I have hundreds of games there but they will also have to add that clause Steam added already since you are still just buying licenses there. That's just how it is these days. You don't ever buy software directly even if it's DRM free.
