Can't we petition brands to stop making such strong cloying fragrances in products? I mean a mild fragrance is fine but so strong that it triggers allergies is wrong! I'd like to see you do a one brand wash day with the NEW Innersense Clarity line which is fragrance free and their new I create definition foam (it's a strong hold foam! Very promising...)

I find that my hair hates Innersense. There is not a lot of slip and I end up with a matted mess after shampoo and conditioner. And their stylers (including the new foam) just don’t have enough hold to prevent frizz in my hair. I’m trying to use up my last Innersense product now because they are too expensive to throw away and I can’t wait to be done.

Yes, agreed. Too many companies really overdo it with the heavy fragrance. I don't mind that products smell of something but it shouldn't be so strong that you can smell it all day long.

Rhyme and Reason is at Target and they have a specific line for wavy hair (I believe it’s the pink one), which always intrigues me when brands have a wavy line and a curly line. They also have a “Gel Serum” as a styler, whatever that means.

So funny because I just left a review for Courtney on the Quench & Curl, LOL. The fragrance is very, very light so hopefully she won't have a bad reaction to it if she tries it!. I got the "leave-in but it's way too heavy for my low porosity, fine hair. Didn't see the gel serum because it's a different line. Maybe she'll give it a go and I can find out if I should try it. I'm 2c/more 3a...someone had it as a "spiral", so not sure if wavy would work as well for me.

Hask is a brand I like using. I use the thickening shampoo and conditioner and it works well on my fine, wavy hair.

I found the Hask line at CVS when they were discontinued ( from CVS) and 75% off. So I got the shampoo and conditioner and you’re right it’s highly scented. I was able to get the cream and jelly and mousse. I wasn’t crazy about the mousse but the jelly and styling cream. The jelly is my favorite and is a great product. I’m beginning to like custards and jellies to mix with my protein gels. My hair needs protein.

Also, if you haven't tried the Hairitage brand from Walmart, i founf that its quite good. But it does have a strong fragrance as well. I would use that brand all the time if it had a lighter scent.

I like hh cosmetics which isnt formulated with artifical fragrance or perfume, safe for babies (besides the shampoo since its clarifying), and they say it's good for those with eczema. Another brand you could try is ecoslay i remember you talking about the gel a few years ago! Plus they have the sample sizes now!

If you want to try a mild and subtle fragrance product, Rhyme & Reason has a shampoo/conditioner/leave-in conditioner called "Quench & Curl". There's no gel or curl enhancer but as someone who is still looking for a great moisturizing S&C (absolutely no aloe and prefer no coconut), it's not a bad choice at all. (I used Uncle Funky for the curl.) I also just tried the SheaMoisture Leave-In Detangler for Low-Porosity hair and it worked really well, which I've not been able to do with - really - any other, and I've tried many!

The brand vanicream Is fragrance free. My daughter, who has severe eczema uses it to avoid inflaming her face. I know they have a shampoo conditioner and gel. I think they also have a dandruff shampoo. I don't know if they have any curl specific products but it would be very interesting to see what would happen with your hair if you just used a regular old gel that wasn't designed for curl. I think people who have skin sensitivities would like to know if this could work for them.

I just use Scissors to open those packets and I put them in a plastic bag to save them they lost about three washes with that conditioner and I use a pretty good amount of conditioner

Vanicream, which used to be called Free & Clear, is one I've been using. I can't seem to get the hair gel to work right, though. FragFre's styling gel works better, but I'm not good at this method. Most fragrance-free products are out of my price range.

Thanks for the video. It he deep conditioner looks good. I found the line by Curlmix at Ulta and it looks really good. I tried the stronger hold gel and fell in love, so would love to see that line.

How about Seen? Have you tried Virtue? Virtue does have a scent, but it dissipates fairly quickly and you don't smell it after 30 minutes or so.

To neutralize the fragrance, would misting your hair with apple cider vinegar be effective? I use it to get rid of residual scents of home hair coloring. My curls are 3c/4a and soak up moisture/ humidity like a sponge 😮. Suggestion: Cantu line. It's available at Walmart, very price friendly (surprised me). I've quite taken to their leave-in cream and voluming styling foam . Great video: I often fail to use products in the proper order. After washing/ deep condish/ styling yesterday, today I've got see-through curls. I used leave-in, gel and a bit of VERB mouse. I apply using finger-combing and praying hands methods. I use the diffuser on my dryer (and a heat-shield lotion). What am I doing wrong? Please? Any suggestions may try (or un-try😂). I think b it's me, not the products. I've used Cantu's curl cream with some success but it's pretty thick and I have fine, low porosity hair. BTW, products that work well for some people, may not work well on your hair. I'm in tears half the time because I apparently have really weird hair and have a hard time finding stuff that works. Like my hair hates aloe. I know this because as I'm apply an aloe product, I can feel my hair change texture into straw. So now I avoid it. I also can't do much protein. If you mean stringy curls, maybe you need a more moisturizing routine. I honestly rarely use gel because it doesn't work that well for me. If I use mousse, I usually apply it to my roots before the curl cream. Maybe try rewatching one of Courtney's videos on styling with a brush because finger combing may well be breaking up your clumps too much, especially if you have drier hair or problems with aloe, etc. :)

Is there a way to make a regular conditioner into a deep conditioner? I cant afford both at this time but still want to take care of my hair. I appreciate all the affordable options you test!

I'm so glad that you appreciate all the affordable options that I test out! If you can get 3 uses out of the Hask deep conditioner for $1.99, that makes each use $0.66. I know it's really frustrating to have to purchase a separate product, but deep conditioners and regular conditioners are formulated differently enough that I really think there is a benefit to having both in your curly hair care cabinet. That being said you could apply your regular conditioner to your hair, put on a plastic shower cap, throw your Terry cloth towel in the dryer and heat it up for a while, put on your terry cloth towel on top of the plastic shower cap that's covering the regular conditioner in your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Basically you're doing a deep conditioning session with your regular conditioner which will help it penetrate deeper into your hair. I hope this makes sense!

Just buy a deep conditioner instead of the regular, I think using a deep conditioner benefits the hair better, and on days you just want a quick conditioning just use less of the deep conditioner on wet hair and leave it in for a shorter amount of time.

Do you shampoo your lengths during every wash day? I only discovered mid last year that my hair is super wavy. I went years avoiding shampooing the lengths of my hair despite using oils in them an other leave-ins and it always looked beautiful despite sometimes being a bit fluffy (didn't flat iron it either). I washed my ends today and it seemed my hair tolerated it. I have to wash my hair every other day due to a sport I train for. Not a fan of dry shampoo.

Let me add - until I started using this line, I struggled with oily scalp at the end of the day. I’ve been able to have day two no wash days occasionally, which is new for me. Most days I wash not because of the oil, but because I’m so sweaty and stinky after my workout.

Oh the next brand: Garnier has a new line I purchased in Germany, called "curly method" and the results are great. The packaging is a light pastel green, the line contains 4 products: pre-wash, shampoo, mask, leave in-spray.

I used Hask for a while, I like the gel but I needed additional mousse which gives me the best result. Courtney, do you never put leave in before you put gel in? Just shampoo, conditioner, gel?

I can totally see that! I would say that this gel is a solid medium hold which I was quite impressed by! I would personally like slightly more hold out of it but it was good enough. Lately I've been skipping leaving conditioner as my hair doesn't seem to need it anymore. But for five years previously I used leaving conditioner very consistently every single wash day.

Courtney! I am in desperate need of help! I am basically restarting the transition phase again with my hair. I am 4 months postpartum from having my first baby. I have never had an oily scalp and I’m loosing my curl definition. I can have ok curls for maybe a day? Then things are starting to stretch out. I have thick, coarse strands but now it’s like my hair can’t handle any product on them. I am constantly washing my hair and I am so insecure about my hair. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
